"Hey, Mom." Carly walks up to the nurses station, where Bobbie is currently working, with a smile on her face. She has come early to her appointment just to see her mother. Their relationship has strengthened in the past couple weeks, with almost daily visits and hours spent talking about everything. The celebration with all the Spencers, including an unnaturally cheerful Luke, had been more than she could hope for. She suddenly went from feeling like she was lucky to have her two people, Jason and Brenda, to being surrounded by a family, by her family. And she had more than a mother, she had aunts, and cousins. Hell, it even came with her very own annoying uncle. The entire time, she vacillated between feeling like she belongs and being overwhelmed. Every time it felt overwhelming, Jason had suddenly appeared in front of her, settling her down with a touch or a hug. The attention he gives her, the way he is constantly checking that she is okay, settles in her heart like a warm blanket, and makes her feel cherished.
"Hello, my beautiful daughter. How are you and my grandbaby feeling today?" Bobbie asks with an answering smile.
"We are good. I'm excited that I get to find out the sex today. Hopefully, the little guy won't be shy." Carly enthuses, rubbing her hands over her belly. There was definitely no denying her pregnancy at this point. Her bump has rounded out, as well as the extra padding everywhere else.
Her mother gives her a sly look, "Like you don't already know. I hear all those he's and Mr. Man's. Never doubt a mother's instinct, especially when it's that strong."
Carly laughs, "Fair enough. Hopefully, he proves me right. I can't even explain it, it's just that I can picture our baby so clearly, a little boy who looks like his father. But, to be fair, as you know, I'm wrong a lot."
Bobbie reaches over and grabs her hand giving it a squeeze, "I knew with you. I knew that you were a little girl; didn't even have a doubt. And remember, you have been right more than you've been wrong lately, so I'm not betting against you."
"Thank you, Mom." Carly says bashfully.
"Where is my son in law?" She asks, looking around. Then, with a big grin, she tells her daughter, "I'm surprised he's not here with you already. That man sure is protective of you, and I'm not complaining about it at all."
"He got held up at work. He said he'll be here in time for the appointment. And besides, I have Francis with me. I'm more than guarded enough." Then, shifting Bobbie's attention, she asks, "How is Mama doing at the brownstone? She's not driving you crazy is she?"
Patting her hand, she reassures Carly, "Not at all. I'm enjoying it, honestly. We are bonding over being your mother and that little boy's grandmother. And it's nice having the company." When Virginia had decided that she wanted to stay up in New York for a long visit, Carly and Jason had offered to let her stay with them, but she had flatly refused and no amount of arguing changed her mind. She had informed them that a newly married couple, especially one with a child on the way, needed their privacy. Bobbie had immediately offered her one of the available rooms at her brownstone, and two women have formed a fast friendship.
"Okay. Good. Thank you for letting her stay. She was so insistent that she wouldn't live with us, and don't tell her, but I'm honestly a little grateful. Not that I wouldn't be happy to have her, but it's nice just having me and Jason." With a sly grin, she amends, "Well, and Brenda. I think Jason and Brenda are actually growing on each other, though they'll never admit it."
"I don't think there's much that man won't do for you, and Brenda as well. I'm glad you have such loyal people in your life. It makes this Mama's heart happy that they have your back." She reaches out, softly brushing her hands through her daughter's hair and stroking her cheek, "And, you've always got me and the Spencers. You have got a whole legion in this town who love you. My brother says Lucky and Emily are at your place more than they are at home these days."
"Thank you, Mom. That means more than you'll ever know. As for my cousin and sister-in-law, they're good kids. Emily has had such a tough time, and Lucky has a knack for making her smile and laugh." Carly says with a soft smile. She redirects her mother's praise, since she hasn't really done anything but give them a place to hang out. Emily has been helping her get the nursery ready, even painting the room with her. Though, Lucky and Jason's little sister had gotten into a paint fight, smearing paint all over each other's hair, clothes, and skin, making them less than helpful. But, they were always entertaining. Leaning in conspiratorially, she confides, "I thought Jason was going to go psycho big brother on Lucky the other day. My cousin and Emily were fighting over… I don't even know, maybe popsicles, and they were kinda wrestling with each other, and suddenly Lucky was on top of her, and they just froze. It looked like Lucky was thinking really hard about kissing her. And my husband lets out this booming command for Lucky to get off his sister. I don't know who was more shocked and upset." Carly laughs so hard at the memory that there are tears in her eyes.
"What are you doing here, you boyfriend-stealing tramp?" comes a shrill voice behind them. Robin's voice echoes around the room, seemingly attacking Carly from every direction.
Bobbie watches the color drain from her daughter's face and jumps into action. She steps from behind the desk, getting between the two women, barking orders to Francis, "Get Carly into exam room three, now." When he jumps into action, she turns around with fire in her eyes, a mama bear ready to destroy the threat to her cub, "Young lady, I have never in my life come across such a delusional little piece of nothing in my life. You think I don't hear the filth you are spreading about her? How dare you talk to my daughter like that?! That boyfriend you are talking about is her husband. From what I hear, he dumped you like yesterday's trash for Carly, so I can understand why you're acting like a petty, childish little bitch." Her voice is hard and very deadly, "But let me be clear, you had better back the fuck up, or if Jason doesn't destroy you, I will."
"Your daughter? You realize that's probably a lie too. She is conning you all. I don't know why I'm the only one who sees her clearly, but I know what a lying, manipulative slut she is." Robin screeches.
Bobbie steps into the smaller girl's face, trying to intimidate her, "The next time you say that filth about my daughter, I will make you regret it."
Instead of backing down, Robin jumps forward, grabbing Bobbie's hair with one hand, and slapping her face with the other. When Bobbie pushes the tiny brunette away from her, Robin grabs her, pulling her down with her. And, suddenly it's become a fight, one that Bobbie clearly has an advantage in as she slaps and beats down the younger woman, though Robin has crazy on her side which counts for something. Francis runs forward, as do some doctors and orderlies, with someone calling for security. Francis pulls Bobbie off the younger woman as gently as possible, not wanting Carly to get upset at him hurting her mother, which would get him an ass-kicking from Jason. And no one wants Luke's crazy directed towards them.
She's screaming at Robin as several orderlies hold the tiny brunette back, "You stay away from my daughter, and keep your lying mouth shut."
"Your daughter is the liar, a lying whore!" The girl who is usually the picture of innocence, suddenly looks ugly in her hate. Her face is twisted in a vicious scowl, "That slut is going to get hers, and I will get Jason back!"
Francis almost loses Bobbie when she jumps towards Robin, "I will end you, you little bitch."
Thankfully, security shows up offering some help, moving to grab the tiny brunette and hold her back. Audrey Hardy steps forward, directing the security, "Remove Miss Scorpio from the building." Then, turning towards Francis, ordering him, "Young man, please take Nurse Spencer into the staff room to cool off." When her instructions are followed, she turns to the rest of the staff. "Let's get back to work, please."
Unseen, Tony sneaks into the room Carly is in. She is sitting on the chair crying, her hands twisted in anxiety. She stands up at the sight of her ex, putting as much room between them as possible in the small exam room. He looks furious, his brows pulled in, and his mouth is in a hard line. It makes her anxiety notch up another level. Putting her hands protectively over her bump, she asks, "What are you doing, Tony? Why are you here?"
"I want the truth. Is that baby mine?" Tony demands, moving to get in her space. When she tries to edge away from him, he corners her.
"I already told you. The baby is Jason's. It's not your kid!" Her voice trembles as she argues, equal parts furious and scared.
He grabs her arms, squeezing hard enough to cause her to flinch, and gives her a jarring shake, "That's not what Robin said. She said you are lying to keep the kid away from me. She said Jason told her the truth about the baby, that it's not his. Maybe it would be too awkward now that my ex is your mother, so you decided to make my baby someone else's. I looked at your medical records, we had sex during that time period. And we both know you're nothing but a lying whore, willing to spread your legs for the richest mark."
She goes to slap him, but he catches her wrist, putting enough pressure on it to bring tears to her eyes. "You had no right to look at my medical files! And Robin is a delusional liar. This baby is my husband's. Do you know how I know? Because maybe we had sex in the week up to that night, and maybe your old man swimmers could have stuck around, but my husband did it right and multiple times. See I read this interesting study that the more a woman orgasms the more likely she is to get pregnant." She leans in, her words hard, "You didn't make me orgasm for months, Tony. A real man knocked me up, a man who knows how to please a woman, not a pathetic, limp-dicked loser like you."
He raises his hand, backhanding her viciously across the face. The door bursts open as Carly falls back against the wall, so stunned she begins to sink to the floor before Tony yanks her back up with a vicious hold on her arms. Alan's voice shouts behind them, "Dr. Jones, get your hands off my daughter-in-law. I cannot believe you would do something this awful to a pregnant woman! Do you have no shame?!" He stomps forward, tearing Tony off Carly, "I am calling the police for…"
Alan pulls the young woman behind him, using his body to shield her from the deranged man in front of them, as Tony presses forward shouting, "She's lying about the baby. It's my child, not Jason's!"
"Like hell it is." Jason booms from the doorway, taking in the way his father is protecting his wife. Then, his gaze shifts to Carly, and he sees a red cheek with blood on the corner of her lip. Her face is pale, and her eyes are wide and filled with fear, though there's a hint of relief at the sight of him and a bunch of anger directed towards her ex. His fists white knuckle clench as he sees the tears flowing down her cheeks. His vision dims as a rage so intense fills him that it takes all his willpower not to tear the hospital apart with his bare hands. Turning to her ex, Jason's eyes are full of violence, but his voice is cold and calm, creating a chilling effect in the room, "I have already warned you, Dr. Jones. You are not to be anywhere near my wife. The fact that you put your hands on her is inexcusable. There are no more warnings."
"Son…" Alan says cautiously.
Without looking at him, he tells his father, "Take Carly out of here, and get her to Francis." The command in his voice has Alan moving almost instinctively.
As he passes with a hand pressed to his daughter-in-law's back, he says so quietly that it only reaches Carly and Jason's ears, "Not here. Too many witnesses."
Carly looks back at him in surprise, before her eyes shoot to Jason's face. If he's heard, he doesn't show it. His face is a stone mask, and even Carly has trouble reading him right now, but she's so attuned to him that she can feel the rage and fear for her pouring off him. She brushes her fingers across the back of his hand as she passes him. The only sign from him is the twitch of his hands as though he's fighting the urge to reach for her.
Once the door closes behind them, Jason's voice is as sharp and cold as ice, not a hint of emotion leaking through, "You made a mistake. My wife has a level of protection that will not allow you to live now that you've put your hands on her. You think you're going to hurt my wife and live to tell about it? The only questions now are when, how, and how long I'll have you tortured before you die. There will be no mercy."
"You can't just…" Tony blubbers, his face going white.
"Your best bet is finding a hole deep and dark enough that it'll take longer for us to find you. But we will find you, and you will die." The calmness with which Jason talks about killing him chills Tony to the bone. He believes every word coming from the younger man's lips.
The door creeps open behind them. Jason turns around to see Luke walking in with a grin on his face, before he turns back around to keep the threat in his sights. With a brief glance to know Jason has everything in hand, Luke turns to look at the miserable excuse of a man in front of him whose knees are literally knocking, "Did I miss all the fun? I hear you've been putting angry hands on my pregnant niece." He looks back at his niece's husband, his face suddenly serious, "Whatever you're doing, I want in."
"Done." Jason says without looking away from the man who is crying so hard at this point, it's embarrassing.
The instinct to run finally kicks in, and Tony stumbles to the door, almost falling over his own feet a couple times. As he's opening the door, Jason warns him, "We'll be coming for you."
There's a sob, and then he's gone, the door slamming after him. As Jason turns to leave the room to find his wife, Luke grabs his arm asking, "What the hell happened?"
Shaking his head, he admits, "I don't know. He shouldn't have been able to get to her."
Then, he is rushing from the room looking for Carly. While he was as expressionless as a rock in front of Tony, now his fear and concern are clearly written on his face. Francis yells for him from outside another exam room, "She's being examined in here."
Changing directions, he demands from the guard, "Where the hell were you? How did Tony get to her?"
"I had to carry Miss Spencer away from Robin. Carly's mother gave her a beat down." He answers, "He must have snuck in while I was keeping those two apart."
Jason narrows his eyes and curses, "Robin's involved? Son of a bitch! Did she get near Carly?"
Francis shakes his head, "She screamed some unrepeatable trash at Mrs. Morgan, but Bobbie jumped in and got her away from your wife."
He gives an annoyed nod, then curses again, "Dammit, Robin. I swear I'm going to end up killing her before it's all over. Do you think she helped Tony get to Carly?"
Shrugging, he tells his boss, "No idea. But she put on a hell of a show."
Suddenly desperate to see his wife, he pats the guard on his shoulder and then bursts into the room to find Dr. Winters prodding some bruises on Carly's arms. She is propped up on the hospital bed, with her mother to her left, and the doctor standing in front of her. When she flinches, he rushes to the side not occupied by Bobbie. As he scans her over, he sees matching bruises up and down her arm and on her wrist with clear finger marks, and her face and lip are swollen and beginning to bruise. Brushing his fingers through her hair, he asks her, "I'm sorry I was late. How are you doing?"
Taking her hand away from the doctor, she puts it on his cheek, reassuring him, "I'm okay. We're okay, I promise. Just a few bruises that will heal, right Doc?"
With a reassuring tone, the doctor answers, "Your wife and the baby are fine. There is no sign of any fetal distress, and other than having some bruising and swelling from the assault, she is perfectly healthy. Though she will have to put up with the bruising and swelling, those will pass in a few days. You can take two Tylenol if it gets too painful, but I don't think you'll have any lasting effects." She shakes her head in bewilderment, "I can't believe Dr. Jones did this."
"Don't get me started," Bobbie growls out.
Jason gives his mother-in-law a good look, and sees the same rage burning in him mirrored in her eyes. He also notices that she has a few scratches and bruises of her own. Giving her a quizzical look, she responds with a brief shake of her head. What the hell happened here today?! As Dr. Winters begins setting up the ultrasound machine, he pulls his wife into a hug, cradling her against his chest. She leans her face up, demanding a kiss. When he obliges, he kisses her extra gently, so he doesn't further hurt her. Pulling back, he promises, "I will take care of this, I swear."
"Love, this isn't your fault. There was no way anyone could know what he was planning to do today, and Alan saved me before it got too bad. I swear, Jase, we are fine. Both of us are as healthy as a horse." When he is less than persuaded, she gets a pleading look on her face, "Please don't beat yourself up. God, if it's anybody's fault, it's mine. I'm the one who…"
Bobbie breaks in with a growl, "How about we blame the jackass who hurt my baby? There's only one person to blame and that's Tony. Carly's right, Jason, you couldn't have known. And daughter of mine, there's never a reason it's okay to lay a hand on a woman, much less a woman who's five months pregnant. This is all Tony, do you understand me?" She's not entirely sure she's convinced them, but they both nod.
Wheeling the ultrasound machine closer, Dr. Winters breaks in, diverting everyone's attention by asking in a chipper voice, "Okay, now that that's settled, who's ready to find out if you're having a boy or a girl?"
