Lana's interview: I think Shep might be going home. It seems like the farthest-out Districts are getting picked on. I don't know why.
Lana's edited interview: We want the farthest-out Districts to go home, so we're picking Shep.
Octavia's interview, unedited: It was so nice of the Gamemakers to fly our family out here. This is one of the best Games ever.
Dorian's interview: Oh, that? Yeah, it cleared right up. See? It was just a little cut. Just a pain in the butt when I was washing my hands.
Dorian's edited interview: My hand cleared right up. It was just a little cut.
Cactus Cleo- District Seven male (18)
Rain thumped on the canopy above us. It was disconcerting to watch it drop off the sides of the dome the Gamemakers had activated. They had no problem letting us marinate when it rained a few days in a row, but heavens forbid they get wet, so the tribal council area was exempt. It was going to be very hard to concentrate on the votes, since water had seeped into my shoes and my socks were squelchy. I didn't hear Isabella's opening screed over my fidgeting feet and the fabric gathering and clumping between my toes.
"It was worth everyone going to tribal council. That was super fun," Kallik was saying, presumably to a question about the auction throwing off individual immunity.
"I thought there would be some nasty prizes," Yarrow said.
Isabella looked at the cameraperson next to her. "Off the record… yeah they wanted some nasty ones. I managed to talk them out of it."
"Thanks, you're a bro," Val said. Isabella gave him finger guns.
"But that does open the question," Isabella continued like we'd left off at Kallik's statement. "How to decide who to vote for?"
"Every week I'm sure we picked whoever has an idol," Alara said. "Unless whoever it was went home."
"That has happened," Isabella said.
"That guy probably never heard the end of it," Val smirked.
"Speaking of…" We all went a little tense at the end of our reprieve. "Let's see if we get one this week."
My damp hair stuck to my neck as I squelched to the voting hut. I wondered if anyone at home noticed that the tribal council area was dry but all the contestants had wet clothes and soggy hair. I knew who I was voting for. Everyone else… the alliances had changed so much I wasn't sure at all.
Isabella stood ominously behind the urn of votes. "If anyone has an immunity idol they would like to play, now would be the time to do so."
Another week went by with its idols still hidden.
The first paper crinkled as it unfolded. "Cactus."
This is it. This is the week I go home. Which was what I'd thought every week since I got here.
"Cactus."
"Cactus."
This time it actually is. It was like being on a roller coaster you told everyone you didn't want to go on. Each time I heard my name I felt sicker. If she said it just a few more times it would be too late. I wondered if this was how the others had felt on their weeks- like they were watching the ship they were on sink and knowing there was nothing they could do.
"Cactus."
The others said Leo was joking when he said he'd disown me if I lost. He did joke sometimes. Usually he told me afterwards. It wasn't that I was gullible, but I tended to think everything people said was true. It would be kind of dumb to disown me. Most kids would be mad at the stuff we did.
"Cactus. That's five votes Cactus. One more is enough."
Why does she even say it? What, the other five votes are all for one person? They're probably all me, too.
"Val."
"What?!" Val said as though someone had insulted him.
"That's five votes Cactus, one vote Val, four votes left." Isabella ignored Val's interruption and opened the next paper. I could not believe how loudly Alara was breathing next to me. I wanted to yell at her but everyone would just get mad at me. I was surprised by how very much I didn't want this to be it. I'd complained so much about the island but it was unbearable to think these might be my last few minutes. I wanted to keep going. I wanted to keep playing.
"Fifteenth eliminated and third member of the jury: Cactus."
Like usually happened in emotional moments, I felt numb. The wooden bench pressed into my legs as I stood. I plucked a torch from the fire and stared at its bright orange flame. I had a sudden urge to run away with it and not let them snuff it out. But breaking rules was even more unthinkable than going home. I stood stone-faced as the snuffer came down at my flame.
As the smoke curled, I turned to face everyone on the benches. I expected to see them smiling. Surely they voted for me since they didn't like me. But they had the same expressions they did every other week: mostly relief it wasn't them, but also sadness for whoever was walking away. In its own contrary way, I was glad to see it. I was glad enough I even decided to tell them.
"I'm going to miss you."
Cactus' final interview: I don't know what to say. I'm not good at interviews. I guess I got voted out because I was a threat. I was doing really well. Now we're going to find out if I'm about to get disowned.
Fifteenth eliminated: Cactus Cleo
I was surprised by this one. Not that it was a bad decision or anything, but just because Cactus wasn't in a big alliance and I would have thought the alliances would keep sniping at each other. Despite his sometimes difficult attitude, Cactus hung in there until the latter part of the game, so hopefully Leo bears that in mind. Cactus is definitely the most well-liked serial killer Tribute I've gotten so far. Perhaps this experience will change his perspective on that as well…
Immunity idol update: it has been found! Two idols are now floating around… and since you're all probably curious, here's the solution:
It was on Mars. In hindsight it probably made it harder that I didn't specify it could be in a silly location like that. It can also be in a fictional location.
Clue one: as pretty much everyone guessed eventually, it was John Carter.
Clue two: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and Doom were set on Mars and star Santa Claus and The Rock
Clue three: both sets of movies are "dueling movies", where the inbreeding and espionage in Hollywood results in two weirdly similar movies coming out and one usually ruining the other's box office. In 2000 there was a noteworthy case of dueling films in Mission to Mars and Red Planet
Clue four: there are a lot of stories in that issue, but the most noteworthy story in the 1934 issue of Wonder Stories is a hugely respected icon and considered the first science fiction story to include a non-humanoid alien: Stanley Weinbaum's A Martian Odyssey
Clue five: in 2012 Disney infamously released the John Carter film adaptation, which of course is set on Mars.
