Chapter 261
They had been packing everything, the boys finished before Rowan did so they all had come in to help her, when Wo Fat left to make a call. He was gone for only a few moments before he came back.
"I gotta a favour to ask you."
Rowan turned to him surprised. When he had her attention, he continued. "I had your father make us specific phone cases so they can go through the void, can you open up the portal so he can toss them through?"
"Can I say hi?"
"Yes."
"Okay!"
Immediately she was perked up. She was less panicked about what she had done that afternoon. She knew that the boys had checked the news, she knew they knew whether or not Roman had survived and they hadn't told her. Though, in Rowan's heart she knew exactly what had happened to Roman.
She went with Wo Fat into the living room and opened up a portal to her father's lab, to make Wo Fat feel better it was just a small portal, not large enough for anyone to walk through. In a second her father's face was staring back at her.
"I'm sorry Con hit you," she told him before Wo Fat could stop her.
"I threw you both off, it was my own fault. Let's move on. Have you been using the energizing ray?"
"Yes."
"Any more problems with the void?"
"No."
She said it so confidently like she hadn't just jumped from a moving vehicle and her whole void trip hadn't been some topsy-turvy mess that had her popping out at the wrong angle and taking out her brother.
"Alright, well I put together a sort of emergency pack for you," he said disappearing from view, only to pop back up. "First we have the de-energizing gun, just in case you lose control again. Then we have the plasma sword, this should cut through the strings, I haven't been able to test it, so do a test on it if you can and if you can tell me how it goes. Oh, and I refitted the vests, they've got the metal cords, now retractable, and they link to one another so you guys don't get lost."
"I only asked for phones," Wo Fat growled as more and more items were passed through the opening to her, which she then passed off to him.
"I'm trying to fit you guys for success. I don't want anything to happen to her while on your travels, especially since I'll be too far away to actually help you."
"Yeah, besides, it's free stuff!" Rowan complained she then turned a cheery smile to him. "Thanks Dad!"
"And I customized the cases, hopefully you like them."
Rowan took the cases and handed them off to Wo Fat who looked them over. Rowan's was a white and grey marbled with veins of metallic purple, so exactly her aesthetic, while Wo Fat's was a grey herringbone pattern and Conejo's looked like a Jack Daniel's biker's patch.
Okay, that was pretty cool, actually.
"Okay well I'll keep you posted on any cool void stuff I do," she told him. "And thank you for all the stuff!"
Yeah all this stuff he was going to have to help carry. Damn they may need to get a third piece of luggage, simply to cart around the void stuff. She closed the portal and then Rowan looked around at all the stuff around her having come to the same conclusion apparently.
"Wow, we're gonna need another bag… or somewhere else to leave things," she said, she opened another portal to retrieve their originals phones, she fit them all with their new cases and then brought them back for them.
They did need their own home base, the problem was, where would that be?
"Okay we'll we're just hopping over to Armando's for the time being so we can deal with the whole luggage thing later," he said. "Let's just try to get you all packed up huh?"
Rowan nodded but she got two steps back into her room before she cried out. Conejo jumped. "What?"
"Is that Mr. Buns?!"
Rowan dashed forward snatching up the little white Rabbit that was clearly her Mr. Buns. Conejo must have stolen him.
"You liked him, so I took him…"
"Con! This is my mother's!"
"Your mother calls you a monster!" he cried.
"Not this mother that's my other mother, in a different reality! This mother thinks I'm dead, and this is all she had left of me and you STOLE it! How would you feel if someone stole Emil's giraffe from you?!"
Conejo hung his head and Wo Fat blinked. "Seriously, who the hell is Emil? That's the second time I've heard that name."
"His son," Rowan answered just as Conejo said: "None of your damn business!"
"He has a kid?" Wo Fat cred but Conejo just groaned.
"Not now," Rowan said to him, turning away while Wo Fat stood there adjusting to that bombshell she had just dropped on him. "You shouldn't have stolen this."
"Okay, you know what? Why are we mad at me? I'm not the only one who stole things… Wo Fat stole the song book!"
"Song book?" she echoed while Wo Fat scowled at him it was a warning glare meant to ward him off but Conejo could not be deterred.
"That's right, Trevor's song book!"
Rowan turned back to Wo Fat and he had no choice but to fish the book out of his own suitcase, he meant to give it to her in Colombia but that the surprise was blown he was going to give it to her now. He handed her the leather-bound journal and she took it from and him looked it over.
"It's the musical… he's still writing the musical?" she asked him and Wo Fat just shrugged.
"God, what is the matter with you two? Why would you steal these things?"
"Okay you know what, you don't want them, then you go a head and give them back Miss. Teleportation-powers."
"No, Colombia first, then we can do other drops-ins, okay?" Wo Fat ordered and both of them rolled their eyes but nodded. "And someone tell me about the kid."
"No," came out of Conejo so fast and so quickly that Wo Fat almost jumped. Yeah, he wasn't going to press that issue either. God whatever got them out of that city with the money and their gear before the cops came knocking on their door.

Armando had given them the safe house in Cartagena, the same safe house where Rowan had her first void incident with them. This worked out to their advantage because Rowan knew her room, and had opened a door into it with ease. She also had no trouble holding it open as Wo Fat and Conejo went back and forth getting all the stuff to Colombia.
Rowan really had amassed a lot of stuff to carry around with them.
The first couple of days in Colombia were throw aways. Wo Fat had kept the reservation in Victoria to throw off the cops. She threw Wo Fat and Conejo to different locations on the island, they'd be seen and then Rowan would pull them back. Make it look like they were still in the country when they weren't. The cops were staking out the suite and every now and then would raid the place. They were all genuinely flummoxed that they could never find them in the room despite Conejo putting room service orders in.
Rowan went and visited her pick pockets who were all very successful finders now and were very happy to see her. Kids were travelling from the other towns to work for them, so Raul was looking in to setting up other towns with a stall like theirs, like a franchise of sorts.
Wo Fat began looking into ways to pick up petty cash, not wanting to borrow money from Rowan anymore, his trade routes in Europe were picking up but he needed more. The problem was the jobs were all over and he didn't want to use Rowan's powers to get there, though he was going to have to if he wanted to take any of them.
Conejo did… well.. whatever it was he usually did. There was one day he and Rowan went out with bouquets of flowers and when they came back Rowan was a little weepy, Conejo was very sombre and their flowers were gone. Wo Fat tried to ask but Rowan went to bed and Conejo started eating and drinking and Wo Fat had been too tired to deal with them so he too went to bed.
But after five days of sitting around doing basically nothing, Wo Fat needed to stretch his legs. So he went to his sister to ask a favour.
"I've picked up a contract…"
It was a rough place to start. For starters I made Rowan's eyes light up with concern. Secondly it got Conejo up and agitated.
"Wait a second, we can take on contracts? I didn't know that!"
"Like a kill people kind of contract?"
"No, like a regular job," Wo Fat chided and a little bit of that worry left Rowan's face. "Problem is, it's in Vegas."
"Oh, so you want me to throw you there or…"
"No, you two can come with me, I'm sure the two of you can find something to do in Vegas."
"Wait… wait… so you want me to go to Vegas, but you don't want me to help you. I have to babysit!" Conejo cried.
"You took the job, Con. You wanted to be her bodyguard." The man groaned again but Rowan was already skipping up to him.
"Do you know where you want to go?" she asked.
"Uh… I guess get us anywhere on the strip and I can deal with it from there."
Rowan hmmed at him a bit before moving over to her computer to pull up google earth stills. As she did Conejo got himself ready, putting on the leather jacket he didn't need, over top of the holsters where he was going to stash his pistols. Wo Fat already had his own piece tucked into his back waistband, and another on the calf holster, just in case.
When she was done she came back to them and they both grabbed onto the back of her. Wo Fat ignored the jolt of electricity that climbed up his arm when she opened the portal, and instead focused on walking into the void. She had gotten better at the whole control thing, because walking into the void no longer felt heavy. He could breathe, he could move and Rowan could keep those stupid red strings away, though it helped that pink strings curled around her from both him and Conejo whenever they were in the void.
When they were out, he found that Rowan had taken them into a darkened alleyway, just across from the Luxor.
"Why here?" Conejo asked.
"It's my favourite one, look, it's Egyptian themed!" she cried pointing at one of the massive sphynxes that stood guard outside. Neither boy was impressed.
Conejo turned a glare back onto Wo Fat. "Can't I go with you, please?"
"Come on, it won't be that bad, you've got all these casinos to go in…"
"Nope, no," Rowan said interrupting their argument. "I can't go in there. I'm banned from all the casinos on the strip! I'm not even allowed in as a tourist. The Pit bosses were very clear."
Oh, for the love of god. Rowan and her bombshells just when he thought she was done she'd drop another one on them.
"Why?!" Wo Fat groaned just as Conejo huffed and asked: "You are?"
Rowan wrung her hands, something she did when she was nervous as both him and Conejo put their hands on their hips and glared down at her.
"Well… I can count cards, right?"
Wo Fat held up a hand to silence her. "Are you telling me you got yourself banned in of every gambling establishment on the strip?"
"And some off," she said.
"Jesus, when did you even find the time?" Conejo cried. "Seriously, when were you even here last? Didn't you just stay in Hawaii?"
"The last time I was here was before I went solo… Trevor and I were…" Rowan paused an understanding drew over her. "I've never been banned here… they don't know me… OH MY GOD WE'RE GONNA BE RICH!"
Rowan was already looking at the Luxor with new eyes and Wo Fat immediately rolled his. Great so she was going to get kicked out of this casino. He turned to Conejo almost pleading with his eyes.
"For the love of god keep your eyes on her."
Conejo shook his head. "Maybe I should just take her shopping. Siegfried and Roy still have a zoo here, right?"
They did but they were no where near it. A good thirty minute walk. Actually maybe a walk would be good for her, would get some of the energy out of her.
"Nope, nope we can do that after. First let's win me some cash!" she cried grabbing a hold of Conejo's arm and pulling him forward.
Wo Fat couldn't help but smile as he watched Rowan as she dragged Conejo away. It was nice to see her so animated in the face of what had just happened with the Stepanovs. So long as she didn't get herself picked up by the Pit boss, she'd be fine.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Rowan was on fire. She was always on fire on a casino floor especially at a Black Jack table. She never remembered to play it cool either. Granted her and Con had a good plan, he kept taking her chips in to cash, which should have kept them off of her back.
The problem was she raked in almost a million at this point, and even she knew that was suspicious. It was supposed to be her last hand, she was supposed to hand off the rest of her chips to Con, she was just waiting for him to come back. She figured while she was waiting she'd play one more, just while she was waiting, a throw away hand at best. But one hand had turned into a few more. She couldn't help it, it wasn't that she was addicted, that was always her brother's thing. No, Rowan was saving for a very large purchase. One that she had started researching the night before. She was actually on her phone trying to continue on her research when she felt someone at her side.
She naturally assumed that was Conejo beside her but that was not who had showed up at her side. It was a man she didn't recognize but instinctively knew was the Pit Boss. The man standing in front of her was a good head taller than her and completely bald. He was in a nice black suit that looked a bit too big on him, but seemed to suit him. His narrowed brown eyes are honed in on her and the chips on the table in front of her. Despite moving tables they've obviously caught on to just how good she was at cards.
"You've uh… you've won a lot," he told her.
"I mean… just a couple hundred thou," she said with a shrug. "That's just… a lucky streak?"
"Hell of a lucky streak considering your boyfriend's cashed in over a mil in your chips." At that Rowan glanced around, she didn't know where Conejo was, but she was certain they probably hadn't tried grabbing him. "You're going to have to come with me."
Great, just great. Sighing Rowan swept her chips into her bucket. "Fine, just don't lose my chips," she ordered. "And be careful grabbing the boyfriend, he's uh… he's a bit of a live wire."
But that didn't stop the man from grabbing her upper arm and pushing her towards the security guards that had joined him while they were talking. Great she was going to have to go up against a Pit Boss again, that was something she didn't really want to have to repeat in this reality but it looked like she was going to after all.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Conejo had all sorts of thoughts running through his head. Starting with, of course, breaking down the door to the Pit Boss's office and shooting everyone inside. The problem was that he didn't know where in that room Rowan was and he could easily hit her by accident. If by some magic or miracle he hadn't hit her, they could easily hold her as hostage to get him to stop and that wouldn't help anyone. He didn't have enough time to get the lay of the land either, so he was really out of options here.
When the security came for him, it took four hits to knock the team of men over but in the process of knocking five men out and down he lost sight of Rowan. Which meant that they got her locked down before he could get to her. After that he decided to pace outside the casino waiting for Wo Fat to either come back or answer one of his phone calls.
Wo Fat arrived first and Conejo practically pounced on him. "I called you a million times, what were you doing?"
"Geezus," Wo Fat snapped trying to back away from him. "I had a job, I was helping a friend move a few things under the radar. Didn't want Rowan around it cause they're you know… explosives. Where is she? She on a hot streak?"
"That's why I was calling!" Con tried to tell him but Wo Fat was already fishing for his phone.
"I turned the ringer off so I could work without interruption…"
"They took her Wo. They took her!"
Wo Fat stopped looking at his phone and then turned his eyes back up to him. "Excuse me?"
"The Pit Boss has her. I could have gone in guns blazing…"
"My god, I left you guys a lone for like four hours…I… you know what, fuck it, do you know where they've got her?"
"Of course I do! But uh… I went a little Rambo on them… took out a few guards, and I'm pretty sure they called the cops so…"
"For fucksake. I swear the two of you are giving me grey hair," he growled. "Come on."
It must have been the determined look on his face as they stormed through that Casino that kept anyone from moving towards them. Not a single person stopped them, or said anything to them, they just let them walk through the rows of slot machines to the back door and down the stairs to the back office.
He got down to that door, rapped on that door three times and then just let himself in. Conejo wasn't used to that. He was used to sneaking in, or running into a hailstorm of bullets, this was a completely unusual for him. But it was nice to just walk in somewhere without a single worry, knowing that this man was going to make sure that they got their girl back and if he was lucky there wouldn't be a single mark on her.
The Pit Boss turned, as if surprised to see two men standing there. Even more surprised to see Con. But Wo Fat did not seem surprised, he seemed… happy?
"Alberto!" Wo said warmly going to hug the man who happily said Wo Fat's name as he hugged him back.
"My man, what are you doing here? And with the man who took down half my team?"
Wo Fat almost winced. "Well, you have something that belongs to me. Someone that belongs to me."
Alberto glanced back to a secondary door, one right behind his desk. "The card counter is yours?" he asked and Wo Fat nodded. "Damn, no wonder she was so calm."
"I would like to do this without shedding any blood. My man has been so kind as to not leave any causalities, and I would like that favour repaid. So, if you could hand her back, with all her chips so we can cash out, I will get out of your hair."
"You can have her back… but you can't have the chips." Wo Fat just glared at him. "Okay half the chips…" The glare turned into a cocked eyebrow and just like that Alberto cracked. "Fine. Fine. But, and take this with the least amount of offense, old friend, don't ever bring that girl back into one of my establishments again."
"Perfectly aggregable. Just be warned, how she looks when you open that door is going to dictate how this rest of this interaction goes."
But the door opened before he even put a hand on the doorknob. Rowan launched herself out of that room and into Wo Fat's arms. Beside him Alberto the Pit Boss groaned.
"Your girl's a regular Houdini."
Wo Fat smiled patronizingly at Alberto while he kept his arms carefully wrapped around Rowan. Rowan pulled away to smile at him, crowing a very happy: "You came," only for her face to fall into a scowl. "What took you so long!" and then her eyes found Conejo. "And you! You let them take me! What kind of bodyguard are you!"
"I got jumped by five guys, Rowan. I was distracted. Did you have to go for another round."
Wo Fat carefully put Rowan's feet back on the ground and then pried her off of him so he could look her over. "Alright well you don't look any worse for wear."
"Nope, other then all the tying up and the duct tape it wasn't all that bad," she said with a shrug. Wo Fat's eyes left her face, staring right over her head and boring into Alberto who was suddenly fidgeting. "To be fair, I slipped handcuffs, ropes and zip ties before they settled with duct tape, and as you can see, I got out of it… though I'm a bit sticky now."
Conejo stormed over to the desk, grabbed the bag of chips that caused this whole mess and slammed it into Rowan's arms.
"We're going to cash out, go home, and you are grounded until further notice. You got me? Grounded!" he shouted causing Rowan to gasp.
"Grounded… ground… you can't ground me!"
"You wanna call it a lockdown? You wanna call it banishment, I don't care what you want to call it, fucking Rapunzel time! You are not leaving that safe house until you can prove it to both me and your brother that you can be trusted to be alone without getting into some sort of shit!"
Wo Fat sighed and shook his head, watching as the two of them argued their way out of the door. He turned back to Alberto with a happy smile. "Thank you for your time, once we're cashed out, I'll be sure to get her right out of the building."
He entered the hallway where Rowan and Conejo were heading for the stairs, still arguing like a bunch of squabbling children. He was starting to think that their little makeshift family had just added a new member to it.
