A/N: Happy Friday my wonderful readers. How is everyone doing self-isolating? Personally I'm dying of boredom, I need to move around more and I'm starting to miss work. Which is big cause I work in customer service. Are you ready for some more of Rowan's hijinks cause this chapter is full of them. It's meant to be funny so hopefully everyone gets a chuckle in somewhere. Don't forget that next week we're going back to double updates. I've almost finished writing chapter 275 but once I get to 285 I'll start posting 3 at a time again. I'll let you know when I get there. Don't forget to leave a review and I'll see you guys on Monday!
Chapter 266
Okay this is a trial run. A trial run okay. If this goes well, we'll think about taking you on another. But you have to listen to everything I say.
They walked out of the portal and into the darkness of the Louvre at night. The two boys behind her were silently waiting for the next part, something she had been practicing in the safety of her new home but hadn't ever tried out on her own.
Rowan closed her eyes and imagined that she was surrounded by this shield, she pulsed energy into it and then threw it at all corners of the room. And all around her she heard the static hiss of electronics dying. So at least she knew that had worked.
Wo Fat was already moving. "Conejo has a map of all the places we have to hit, and all the cameras and security measures you'll have to dismantle, go with him, take everything down, and I'll follow," he ordered. "And for the love of god do as he says."
Rowan nodded and then followed Con to the next doorway where she then sent out another pulse taking down the pressure plates, any random invisible lasers and the cameras. They continued this, room to room, until Rowan stopped and veered off course.
"Hey, hey!" she heard Conejo hiss behind her. "Where the hell are you going?"
Rowan didn't answer him but instead showed him where she was going. She stopped in front of the Mona Lisa, sent a pulse through the room to take down anything that was electronic. She was part way through taking a selfie when Conejo darkened the doorway.
"What the hell, Ro?"
"I just wanted a picture," she whispered. "Can we hit the gift shop before we go?"
Conejo glanced down to the watch he had on his wrist, the watch that Wo Fat had made him synchronize. "Yeah we got time. But only like five minutes of it."
Conejo, with his little map, lead them down the stairs and to the gift shop close to the exit, on the way Rowan took down the rest of the cameras and security measures as she went. They almost ran into a security guard but Rowan literally popped the two of them into a washroom until he went away. When they got out of the washroom, she decided to pop them closer to the giftshop. Then once she was there she went wild.
She took all the postcards she wanted, found all the things she wanted to give her friends. Paper weights, journals, fancy pens, mugs, reams of stationary. Conejo went and grabbed all the expensive jewellery to put into her backpack, while she got specially polka dotted teacups with a matching tea pot.
And it was while they were pilfering the gift shop that Wo Fat finally found them.
"What the hell?!" he thundered a little too loudly. "We are here to steal artwork, NOT go shopping!"
Rowan went up to him with an arm of fancy silk ties all woven in the shape of famous paintings. "What do you think of these? A little color with your black suits."
"Where are your gloves?"
Rowan looked down to her gloveless hands and winced. "I didn't wear any."
"It's fine, I clocked that when we got in here, I've been wiping down everything she touches that doesn't go in the bag."
"I also want to steal a few of the larger things, if I open a portal will you guys take them through?" she asked. "I think it might be nice stuff for the house."
"Why steal reproductions when you can have the real thing?"
"Because her favourite piece of art in here is Eros and Psyche, and I unno about you, but I don't think I can move a statue that big into the house, what about you?"
Wo Fat sighed. Knowing full well that he and Conejo alone couldn't move that thing. "Fine, but I'm picking my own things."
Together Rowan and her brothers raided the gift shop and when they were done, they stepped through a portal back to their Andalusian house with their spoils of Rowan's first successful heist.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
In the morning, Wo Fat had Rowan open a portal for him to Berlin where he offloaded the actual paintings he had stolen the previous night. A couple of minutes later she opened another portal and he came back with money. A lot of money. Like. Wow, a lot of cash.
While Wo Fat went to the Vault to deposit their ill-gotten gains, Rowan spent first half of the day playing Lava with Conejo. This was a fun game where they would take turns shouting the floor is lava and then climbing onto something that wasn't the floor. A game that Conejo unfairly had an advantage in because he was the parkour king. Rowan thought she had Conejo in the kitchen, but the assassin had scaled their fridge like a freaking monkey.
By lunch, Wo Fat was back where the then announced that there was another heist that he was willing to take Rowan on, on one condition. She was to follow orders directly, no more wandering off. The gift shop would be at the very end of the heist if they had time, and she was not allowed to make time.
This time, once Rowan had jumped them to London, specifically in a supply closet in the British Museum, Wo Fat had decided that she would stay with him. She would do all her pulses to wipe out the electronics and cameras in the room with him, no longer would she be going ahead of him.
She would stay while he removed the object in question and then they would move onto the next room together.
They were only there for two items, one in the Egyptian section, and one in the ancient Jewel section. They got the giant ruby broach first and then it was up to Rowan to clear a path to the Egyptian section. Rowan didn't like walking in silence, but Wo Fat didn't want them making any noise to attract guards, especially since he had planned this to the minute so they be on the opposite time of the guard's rounds.
By the time they got to right room Rowan was practically bursting. She sent out the pulse to take down everything and Wo Fat went for some mummy's crest.
"Hey uh… Wo, I was thinking, we were playing a game today… would you like to play it with us?"
Wo Fat didn't even pause, he was already cutting his way through the display case. "And what game is that?"
"You didn't hear us shouting its name?"
"What? The Floor is Lava?"
The second he said, both Rowan and Conejo jumped. Conejo jumped up onto a display case, but Rowan, Rowan was not that close to one of those. Instead she just clamoured onto one of the stone slabs they had taken from a tomb covered in hieroglyphics.
Wo Fat paused in what he was doing and then turned back to them. He took in Conejo and then took in her clearly very unimpressed with the both of them.
"What the hell are you doing?" he asked her, his hands on her hips.
"Well the point of the game is someone says the floor is lava and you have to get off the floor as quickly as possible. You know… it's like the trust fall game I used to play with you… except I don't have to fall."
"I hated the trust fall game," he reminded her but Rowan continued to smile at him. He sighed deeply at her. "Get down."
Rowan obliged him immediately, sensing that the game was over. But she was on the ground for three seconds before Conejo quietly crowed: "The floor is lava."
Rowan practically used Wo Fat to climb a display case for a sarcophagus. Wo Fat had kind of yelped and then growled out her name, but Rowan didn't climb down.
"Hurry up, you're still in the lava!"
Wo Fat just continued to glare up at her. "Okay, firstly, I'm not playing this stupid game. Secondly, I thought we agreed on working on our professionalism!"
"Those are some mighty brave words for someone who's still standing in lava."
Beside her Conejo snorted but Wo Fat's face went this red color she had never seen before. "Rowan Hazel Pierce get off that Egyptian Mummy installation… right this instant!"
"Ohhh… he hit you with your full name."
"And you're lucky I don't know yours Con, cause you're in just as much trouble!" he snapped and only then did the two of them come off their respective high grounds. "You are not supposed to be encouraging her."
"Well… she's gotta have fun, you know. You know what she's like."
Wo Fat sighed, palming his face at the two of them. In the hallway a flashlight flashed and Rowan immediately popped a portal open and shoved her two boys through it before she went through herself. When she got through and the portal was closed behind her she found her eldest brother glaring down at her.
Conejo stepped half in the way. "Okay, so I know you missed the last piece you wanted to pick up but we uh… we can go back tomorrow…"
"They're going to be on high alert and you know it. I also cut into the case which means they're going to move it…"
Rowan held out her hand, opened a portal just above her palm and the amulet dropped into her palm. For a second both Conejo and Wo Fat stared at her and then she offered it up to him. Wo Fat snatched it out of her hand.
"This makes up for nothing. You are grounded!"
He stormed off into the house and Rowan winced. Conejo clapped a hand to her shoulder. "Don't worry, it'll be alright," he whispered. "I'll talk to him."
She was doing a really bad job at being like her brothers. She was starting to wonder if she had it in herself at all.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Rowan locked herself in her room and found herself crying again. She wasn't good at anything. She wasn't good at being good and now she wasn't even good at being bad.
Wo Fat was mad at her, she was grounded again, it was just... everything was just sucky.
By morning not only was she all cried out, but she had cried herself a headache, and had gone into the washroom in an attempt to make herself feel better. She had fallen asleep there. She was not surprised when, sometime in the afternoon, she had Wo Fat standing above her.
"What are you doing?"
"I'm not feeling well," she snapped back at him.
"Alright, well… pick yourself up off the bathroom floor, please, we have another heist. I'm still debating whether or not I'm taking you, but at the very least I'll need you to open a portal for me."
Rowan had never gotten ready faster. She remembered her gloves, got herself into the all black spy suit that Wo Fat had given her for her very first heist and met her boys in the kitchen. Wo Fat looked her up and down, he did not seem impressed with her, which meant he was probably going to keep her grounded but she smiled up to him and showed him her gloved hands.
"Look, I remembered my gloves."
Wo Fat cocked an eyebrow at her but beside him Conejo grinned and half chuckled. "Look Wo, she remembered her gloves, you can't say no to her now."
"Yes, I most certainly can," he growled and Rowan's smile faded.
"Aw please, I'll be good, I promise!"
"See," Conejo said pointing to her. "She promises. Besides, on this one… can she really get away from either of us?"
Wo Fat turned a glare to him but Rowan nodded. "I promise no wandering off. Please, let me try, just one more time."
"Fine!" he cried, and then pointed a finger into her face. "But this is your last chance, do you understand me?" Rowan nodded eagerly and he turned the laptop to her. "I need to go here."
The picture was of a closed off safe. There were walls of metal boxes and rows of display cases. But she didn't know where that was.
"Uh… and where is that?"
"New York," he said and Rowan turned up to him. "Address is attached to the picture, tell me if you need more."
Rowan looked at it, figured that she shouldn't. But this wasn't going to be like the other heists. This wasn't a place that Rowan knew off by heart. She left her brothers to put on her safety vest and give them there's. Once they had their vests on Rowan attached the cord first to Wo Fat and then to Conejo. Once they were connected, she opened the void and pulled them in it. She put out the address into the strings around her and then waited for the strings to respond.
It took a little bit but Rowan didn't have to worry about her or her boys suffocating. She had practiced this, had learned to envision a little bubble around them to keep the affects of the void from hitting them.
When the void finally answered her, with a simple white string, she let it coil around her wrist and then pull her to the safe Wo Fat wanted to be in. They landed in the quiet room and for a second, they all just got their bearing, except for Rowan who needed to catch her breath instead.
When she was ready she turned around to find that Wo Fat and Conejo had unconnected their metal braided cords from her and were already going around raiding the drawers and metal boxes. Rowan still wasn't sure where she was.
"Where are we?"
"Harry Winston's vault," Wo answered. "And we will have to be quiet, just because they're at an event right now, doesn't mean someone won't hear us in here."
"It's a sound proof vault," Conejo argued, but Rowan zipped her lip shut and decided then and there she wasn't going to talk for the rest of the trip.
With her boys busy and Rowan not having anything to do, she began to explore. Of course, the place was covered in precious stones and gems, twinkling diamonds being the majority of the stones in the room. She went to each display case to look at the necklaces hanging there. The obvious prototypes, most likely for a new line. And that was how she found the necklace.
It was essentially a collar, a collar of hanging diamonds in strands of triples, starting off small and getting larger as it got closer to the column of her neck. The largest diamond was a light blue color and roughly the size of a quarter in a teardrop shape and it hung right in the middle. Rowan was mesmerized by it.
"Rowan, don't wander."
"It's a safe, Wo, it's not like you can loose me in it," he reminded him. "And besides I'm wearing my gloves."
He grumbled something at her but she wasn't listening. She was lost to the sparkling of all the little gems. It was the most expensive thing she had ever coveted. Her fingers itched to take it. And really what was stopping her? With Wo Fat and Conejo behind her, emptying drawer after drawer of diamonds, what was wrong with her taking one piece?
She took it out of the case and put it on, just to try it on, she said to herself, but even she knew that that wasn't true.
"Come on, time to go."
Rowan put her hand out and let Wo Fat take it. Once she was certain both of them were holding on, she opened the portal, this one was just a quick hop back to their kitchen. She was hungry after all.
Rowan waited until both the boys were through the portal before closing it and when she turned to her brothers, she found both of them staring at her a look of concern on both of their faces. Rowan just stared back at them, not sure why they were looking at her like that.
"Rowan what is that?" Wo asked
"What is what?'
"The bling around your neck, what it is?"
"It's their title piece," she found herself saying even though she wasn't certain if that were true. "I wanted it, so I took it."
"Nice!" Conejo crowed offering her a high-five. Wo Fat almost smiled proudly but he hid it not so well from her.
"You can't wear that in public," he warned her. "But good job."
Rowan beamed at him. "Did I do a good job? Am I ungrounded?"
"At the current moment, yes," Wo Fat admitted. "But you're still on thin ice."
Well she could deal with that. Happily humming she skipped off the fridge. This deserved celebration ice cream.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
The portal hissed open and the trio quickly got out. Another day another heist.
Earlier that day, Wo Fat had gone back to Victoria to close up his accounts there, and to drop off the diamonds they had pinched the afternoon before to the jeweler who had requested them. This would be the last heist for a few days. Granted everything had Wo's signature, but there was no way to prove that it was him, for how could he be travelling from Paris, to London, to New York all in one day, when people were seeing him in Victoria. It was the best alibi ever.
This was another vault that Wo Fat wanted into. This time they were in the Cape Town Diamond Museum. That's right, more diamonds to steal, except a difference fence wanted them this time. Rowan left their side to explore once more. She was looking for a few nice pieces to make a set to match the necklace she had stolen from Harry Winston.
But she didn't see anything she thought would match. Well sort of, she found a ring, but Rowan didn't want a diamond ring. All the diamond rings reminded her of was that Steve had married someone else, Steve had given a diamond ring to Catherine instead of her. The thought still turned her stomach inside out.
"What are you looking for?" Conejo threw over his shoulder.
"I unno, I'll know it when I see it."
"If you're looking for something to match your new necklace, I would recommend looking at the uncut stones. They might have a matching teardrop for you."
That was actually a wonderful idea. "Did you see something for me?" she asked Wo. Immediately he held up a gem. Same color, just a little smaller than her necklace but it was the same cut. Rowan oohhed at it and snatched it up out of his hands.
"Where did you get this one?" she asked and he pointed to a drawer, she snatched it open and looked at the diamond in it before she decided to just take the whole drawer.
She turned to see both her brothers staring at her, a proud smile on both of their faces. A larger one on Conejo's face.
"What?" she asked them. "I figure I have enough to make my matching bracelet, and I'll sell whatever's left."
"A good thought, I'll be sure to ask my fence if there is anyone who can replicate a bracelet like that," Wo Fat offered and then looked around. "Looks like we're good to go, you ready or do you want to look around. We are in a museum after all."
Rowan shook her head and popped open a portal. She was getting better at this whole criminal thing, and she was already starting to feel a little bit better. Diamonds had that affect on her, as did red-bottom heels. She wondered if there was anything else she could buy, or possibly steal, that would make her feel a little bit happier? Even if it was just for a little bit.
