Chapter 279

Rory moving to California, only three blocks away from him, had been the best thing to happen to him since… well ever really. It definitely helped that her open concept, loft apartment was nicer than any of the places he had ever lived. Not that he didn't love his grandfather's place in Mission city but her apartment was just… well amazing.

And he loved waking up in that alcove of a bedroom with her beside him. He loved coming back from a mission and having her there to hug him tightly and offer him a beer. It had only been a few weeks but he'd have to say that this was… this was essentially perfect.

Which was why he went out of his way to makes sure she knew how much he liked her. He never came to her apartment empty handed. He knew when to buy her a new book, when to bring over a new carton of ice cream, he sent her flowers weekly. He called her with every change to his itinerary and was constantly telling her how much he missed her.

She met his friends, which would have gone better if Nikki, the analyst for the team, hadn't asked her a million strange questions about Rory's background before shouting: "But she's a freaking Criminal!"

Rory had been calm and collected throughout the entirety of the conversation. In fact, after the outburst she calmly narrowed her eyes and said: "You know… I'm starting to think Nikki doesn't like me."

It had the whole table in stiches but it made Angus both mad and upset that Nikki had done that to her. So, they stopped inviting Nikki out if Rory was there and he was always maximizing his time with Rory so she was always there.

She didn't even mind much that he had to go over seas for his job and he was sometimes gone days a time. Okay she minded a little, she got disappointed but it hadn't started a full out fight yet. IT was coming, and he knew that, hence why he always surprised her with little gifts.

Tonight's gift was new guitar strings. She had mentioned one of hers had snapped, he didn't know if she had already gotten a replacement but he wanted to show her that not only did he think about her, but that he listened to her too. He especially loved listening to her sing because his new girlfriend was a song writer. Which was also what Rowan Pierce was. I mean… could she just admit that she was Rowan already?

As per usual Rowan met him at the door with a beer in one hand and kiss just for him. Their kisses at the door were getting longer. Screw the beer he just wanted her in his arms. They kissed and they kissed and for a minute he forgot that they were supposed to be having dinner and a movie inside, he forgot that he had guitar strings to surprise her with, he completely forgot she had a beer in her hands.

The kiss at the door became something more heated. He pulled her up so her feet were off the ground, and immediately they were wrapped around his waist. Yes. Sex. Sex with Rory was always phenomenal and not just because she was an older woman with tricks, he had moves too. Moves that Rory loved.

The only bad part about the alcove bed was that you had to climb a ladder to get up to it, normally he didn't care but when they were all entangled passionately it was a buzz kill to climb up.

They had a lot of couch sex, which was where he was taking her when he suddenly got, what had to be, an electric shock. Maybe it was the fact that he had kicked his shoes off and he had been dragging his socked feet on his rug, but that was one hell of a static shock.

So strong it actually stopped them.

"Oh, ow, shit…" Came out of Rory and then she was frantically pushing him away. She got her feet back on the ground a hand to her lips, a haunted look in her eyes and strange look on her face.

"Damn I'm sorry, never had a static shock that… strong before," he said, his hands never once leaving her, he wanted her back in his arms, he wanted to be making out and about to fuck this girl, how the hell did he get back to that?

"I'm so sorry," she whispered to him. "I… oh my god…" Angus found himself looking around, her eyes seemed unable to focus on anything and were darting around him and it was starting to freak him out.

"Are you okay?" he asked grabbing her shoulders and making her look at him. Her eyes were this bright blue he swore he had never seen before.

She finally looked at him, like good and truly looked at him and that bright blue faded and a shaky smile donned her face. "Oh, yeah, yeah, no I'm good. Hey, Mac… Mackie, I just need to make a phone call. Spaghetti's on the stove help yourself."

She was gone before he could stop her, so he simply wandered over to the stove to get that spaghetti she mentioned. It was the one thing she could make really, really well. He tried not to watch her to give her the space she needed but his investigative senses were tingling. He always knew when she called her brother because she'd go out onto the balcony to do it. The only place where he couldn't hear her. He just didn't know what had happened that meant she needed to call her brother.

When she came back inside, she was her regular self. She wasn't distant nor did she offer an explanation for what happened. They had their spaghetti dinner, watched a movie that she let him choose, and then they retired to bed where he got to dazzle her with his moves.

He most definitely wasn't happy to wake up the following morning to an empty bed and a note saying she had a family emergency and would be incommunicado until she got it settled, but he could crash at her place for as long as necessary she left him a spare key. It was a nice gesture, it was sweet and yeah, sure he would have liked her to tell him that in person. But what really had him was that this just sounded like her and criminal family were up to something.

Chin was an uncle.

Gabriel had a kid, a sweet little girl, nothing like her father. This made him her uncle by marriage. But her uncle nonetheless.

The only reason Chin learned this, however, was because Sara's mother, Vanessa, had just been murdered and Sara had told him that she had an uncle on the force. It came out pretty quickly that her father was Gabriel. Chin couldn't help but wonder if Malia knew about Sara since she had kept contact with Gabriel over the years and just hadn't told him.

Gabriel must have met Vanessa in Mexico, and had been keeping Sara and Vanessa a secret. Just not well because Kono had mentioned that when Gabriel was tormenting her Rowan and Adam, Rowan had asked how Sara was doing and had threatened to send NA after her. Good thing NA didn't do kids.

Now the problem was that Michelle Shimoa was out for Gabriel's blood, for shooting her father and leading to his death. She had sent a guy to rough her up and get her to talk but he shot her instead. Now Sara was with Chin and they were moving her to a safe location until they could find Brigante, the guy Shimoa sent after Gabriel, and nullify him as a threat and in turn had killed Vanessa to get to him, and would use Sara as leverage to get Gabriel to surrender.

Chin had decided to go with Sara to the safe house. Just to help her adjust to things, to be a familiar face. He was having a hard time wrapping his head around the fact that this sweet little girl was Gabriel's blood, but he also remembered that she was Malia's blood too.

He was following the cop car that had Sara in the back when suddenly an SUV peeled out from a side street and blocked the cop car. Chin had to swerve to avoid rear-ending the car. Someone got out of the SUV and opened fire killing the two cops instantly. Chin got out of his own car to open fire, but he was outnumbered and out gunned.

Chin got clipped in the shoulder and he dove behind his car door. It wasn't until Sara started screaming that he jumped out from behind again. That was how he got clipped in the abdomen. Chin hit the ground hard. Yes, he had managed to take one of the guys down, but they others were still escaping with Sara. No, she was just a little girl, she shouldn't be punished for the crimes of her father.

There was a sudden rat-a-tat-tat of a bigger gun and suddenly the men in front of him went down and someone came to hover over him.

"Get the girl Con, I got this just get the girl!"

He knew that voice and he had never been so happy to see Rowan in his life. Rowan rolled him over and looked at the bullet wound in his side. "Oh… okay. Oh dear. I was hoping to avoid this but I got here late," she said. Damn what did that mean? How long had she been on Hawaii? If he hadn't been in absolute agony, he might have asked her all of that but he couldn't form words. Rowan looked different. Her hair didn't look right, it was too straight and shiny. "Okay, I got this… I think…" she said moving his hand away from the wound and put her own hands over it.

She was looking at blood and not gagging or vomiting. Maybe this wasn't Rowan after all.

"Okay, not gonna lie this is probably gonna hurt," she told him. "I'm hoping not a lot but I've never done this before so we'll see what happens."

Chin wasn't ready for that burning electric pain that fired up in his abdomen in response, as Rowan twisted her hand above the wound. She may not have been in the wound but she might as well have been. He looked at her as he cried out in pain and realized that her eyes were a white hot, so this was definitely void magic.

When she stopped Chin flopped back down, his body having gone up in flames. He watched Rowan look up to the man beside her, the man in the rabbit mask, with the giant sub machine gun. Chin hadn't even noticed him walk over. Nice to see she still had Sin Nombre around her.

"Where's the girl?"

"Forget the girl, what the hell did you just do?"

"Well if I did it right, the bullet is no longer in his kidney," she said patting Chin's shoulder. "You're welcome by the way."

Rowan took her eyes off of him, eyes that were back to her normal color, and looked around. She stood up to face Sin Nombre

"Seriously, where's the girl?"

"They got away?''

"They got away? What the hell? You going soft on me Con?" Chin was confused, who the hell was Con? Was that what she was calling Sin Nombre? Because if so… where did she get Con from?

"Soft on… Rowan, they got in the car, I'm not the fucking terminator. I'm good but I can't run down a fucking car."

Rowan groaned loudly like all of this was inconveniencing her. "Kay well we gotta go get her," she said.

Then it was Sin Nombre's turn to groan like he was being majorly inconvenienced. "Aw come on!"

"No, we're going. So, strap on your moon shoes we gotta jump."

There was a crackle and a pop and like that Chin was all alone. He had no idea where Rowan went, his body was still up in flames and he didn't feel better that Rowan was on the case because there was something majorly wrong with her. Yes, she had rode to his rescue but she left him bleeding in the middle of the street and Rowan never would have done that before. He was worried, worried that if she got to Sara's captor's first well. No one would survive.

The three men up in that little cabin in Waimanalo had guns and the tactical advantage. They were ready for an attack from either the cops or Waincroft himself. They had the little girl tied up and blindfolded. So far, other then crying and sniffling, she hadn't been a little bit of trouble.

They figured themselves okay but they were going to stay on high alert anyway.

Which is when they noticed him.

"There's someone outside."

And there was.

A man in a black leather jacket, a SMG in his hands trained on the house, a white rabbit mask on his face.

"Sin Nombre," another man breathed out almost reverently. The three men came to stand by the window to stare at him. Sin Nombre was legendary, his kill streak was unbroken, his accuracy lethal. If he had wanted them dead, he would have killed them by now, and none of the would have realized it.

"Do you think she sent him?"

There were rumours of shaky truces between Fat and Shioma. But they did have a common enemy in Waincroft so it was entirely plausible that he was here to help. But something about the silently imposing figure with a gun trained on their little hideout was off putting.

Unbeknownst to the three men, Rowan had voided into the house. Behind them. She silently reached down, and took a hold of Sara's hands, tugging her up to her feet. She pressed the young girl to her side and slowly began to back away. She didn't want to open a portal with a child, but she was ready to do so, it was merely a last-minute resort. She was hoping to get away from these men just by walking away. They were so distracted by Conejo it should have been easy.

Something raised the hairs on the back of one of the henchmen's neck, he didn't know what it was but it made him turn around. He wasn't sure how it happened, he wasn't sure how she got in there but she was there and she had the girl.

All he had to do was yelp and the other three men whirled around. Girl or not, they all advanced forward, guns forward.

"Give us the girl."

The woman with the red hair shook her head at them, she carefully put the girl behind her. So, they repeated the demand. That time they got a no from her.

The bravest of them shot at her. He was their best marksman. He could have dropped her like a deer. But the second he pulled the trigger she lifted a hand as if to ward him off and, in a pop, a black hole appeared in front of her hand and the bullet disappeared.

After that, once they had the panic imbued in their blood, they opened fire on her. And an orange translucent barrier went up between them and her that deflected all their bullets back on them.

From outside the cabin ripped a multitude of bullets and riddled into the men. This continued for some time until the door to the cabin opened and Sin Nombre walked aiming his guns to the bodies that had dropped to the ground, he continued to shoot to make damn certain they were dead.

Rowan lowered her shield and looked around at the bodies, her stomach was already uneasy but now it was getting worse.

"We got them all right? Just three?"

"Yeah, we got the others at the smash and grab," she said, her eyes darting to the three dead bodies and all the blood that was draining from them. Con forcibly made her look at him.

"Don't look at that. I know what you're like, look at me instead okay?"

Rowan nodded, grateful for his presence, though honestly, she wished for Wo. He never would have let her come here, never would have let her help but she still wished for him. He would have hugged her by now and sent her outside.

"Alright, we're gonna head out now, let me go first in case we got people lingering outside, okay?" Rowan nodded, holding on tightly to Sara still.

"Don't worry. You're safe now," she whispered to her. "Just keep the blindfold on until we're outside, you don't need to see any of this."

Conejo only got a few steps away from them. He paused to look out the window. "Aw son of a bitch. I think it's Five-0."

Rowan almost swore too. Great. This situation got a whole lot more complicated.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

They could tell right away that something had happened because there were bullet holes in the house. By the look of it a gun fight had gone on, on the inside. That did not bode well for them. Steve had taken Kono and Abby with him to move through the trees to get a better visual. From that he could tell that someone was still in the house but he couldn't get a good view on them. Which was why he had Danny and Grover stay behind with the computer monitor and the Infrared gear.

Grover glanced to Danny who had been working damage control on Steve since that morning.

"Are you sure he's alright?"

Danny turned back to him. Was Steve alright? No, it was safe to say that having Michelle Shioma tell him that she would send her regards to Rowan, in way of a threatening Steve, had not ended with Steve being alright.

But, just like everyone else who was in that world, Michelle Shioma was terribly silent about the topic of Rowan's location. Steve had been a right mess after that happened. Danny kept reminding him that there was no way Wo Fat would let anything happen to Rowan but there had been that incident in Colombia and no one had really seen Rowan since. That was… well… worrying.

Someone had better get a sight on Rowan soon or Steve was going to go fucking crazy.

"We're in position what do you got?"

Oh yeah, the rescue op. Grover focused on the computer in front of them, trying to make sense of what they were looking at. "Alright we got three infrared bodies. Uh… one I'm pretty sure is Sara and then one female and… you're not gonna believe this, somebody with fucking rabbit ears."

Steve went a little straighter. "Wait, what? Come back on that last one."

"Rabbit ears, Steve, we're looking at Rabbit ears right now… and…"

There was a sudden flash, this epicenter of white-hot energy and just like that he lost visual. "Jesus what the hell was that?" Danny cried.

"What, what happened?"

"I unno man but we've lost visual, I can't see shit thermally anymore! Did something explode?"

But nothing had exploded. Steve couldn't wait anymore, if Sin Nombre was in there he was either there to help them or there to help Shioma's guys. And if Sin Nombre really was there, then he could get him get to Rowan. Especially since Shioma had threatened her, he figured someone should warn them that the Yakuza had their eyes on her again.

"Just move in," Steve ordered heading for the front door, his pistol up in his hand, ready for anything or at the very least some sort of fight.

He got into the house and saw no sign of anything living. He took in the bodies on the floor, and the splatter of bullets that seemed to have all ricocheted off of something and then there was the man at the back window with the white Rabbit mask.

"Sin Nombre!"

"Are you fucking shitting me? Every time?!" he shouted back at Steve which made no damn sense. He then launched himself out of the window and into the jungle behind the house. Steve didn't have to give it a second thought, holstering his gun he went right out that window after him. Sin Nombre was not getting away from him again.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Chin arrived at the command post, parked his bullet ridden little sports car behind Danny's black Camaro and got out of the car. He should have been in the hospital, he was still injured after all. The Doctor said it should have been worse. It was a miracle, he had said. Like the bullet just changed directions. Missing his kidney entirely. And well… Chin figured if Rowan had done some void shit to him, that she must have changed the direction of the bullet for him. Which was nice of her. Still sucked that she left him there on the pavement, but from what he gathered she had saved his life.

There was no one at he command post. He could hear Grover shouting in the distance though.

Where did McGarrett go?

Well that wasn't good. Well, if he couldn't see Danny that meant that he was probably with Steven. The question was now, where the hell was Sara.

Chin was alone for three seconds before, he heard a soft pop and then a: "Oh… that wasn't as far as I thought it was gonna be."

He whirled around and Rowan was getting out of his car. "Kay you wait here for your Uncle Chin…"

Chin rushed her, pushing Rowan aside to get into the car to check on Sara. She was unhurt but blindfolded. He took her blind fold off and hugged her briefly. Once he was certain she was alright he began the difficult process of getting out of the car. Which was hard to do with stiches in his stomach.

"See safe and sound. You should have stayed at the hospital, you're hurt and well… I had this. Didn't I tell you that?"

Chin whirled around on her. No she hadn't told him that. She hadn't told him anything.

"How did you do that? How did you do any of this Rowan?" he cried. She opened her mouth to answer and Chin realized that out of everything he probably should have told her all about Wo Fat and his lies and how Steve had been looking for her, but there came a sudden flurry of her name repeated over and over and Sin Nombre, mask still on slid to a stop beside her.

"We gotta go," he said. "Like now. We gotta go now."

"What? Why?"

"SIN NOMBRE!"

Rowan turned, this haunted look in her eyes. Like she had just gone on autopilot. A look he saw mirrored on Steve's face every time Rowan's visage passed through his memory. She got half a whisper of "Steven…" out of her mouth, took half a step forward and Sin Nombre grabbed her. She turned back to Sin Nombre with an accusatory glare. "You didn't loose him?"

"He's fucking persistent Rowan, come on let's go, NOW!"

Chin watched Rowan pause as Steve came into view. "Ro, if he catches us, I get arrested, and he's going to use you as bait to get Wo, now COME ON!" Sin Nombre shouted and only then did she let him pull her away. Chin reached out to grab her, to tell her that that wasn't true. Steve didn't want Rowan as bait, he wanted Rowan back completely.

Steve slid into view, he seemed momentarily surprised by the appearance of Chin, and Sara in his car but then he clocked the red blonde hair disappearing into the trees and Chin saw it. The very second he realized that Rowan was there. Shock took him over but that didn't last long. Her name ripped from him, this animalistic howl for her and then he was chasing off into the trees after her.

Danny, breathlessly, appeared. "Where is he?"

"Trees," Chin said pointing and Danny, groaned. From the foliage came another howl of Rowan's name and Danny turned surprised eyes to Chin.

"Rowan?"

"Yep, Rowan," Chin said. Danny swore and took off after Steve. Which was good, because if he didn't get Rowan, if she managed to disappear again, he was going to need them all.
