Just a few more chapters and then I'm going to start the "getting back together" plot arc. Don't forget tot ell me how excited you are when you leave your review and I'll see you guys on Monday.
Chapter 282
The Five-0 team had gotten down to the ground and saw two things. One, Gabriel practically sprinting down the street, and, two, someone with red hair chasing him, but like… leisurely. He'd say that person was moving at a nice skip. Chin didn't say he spotted Rowan, but he did tell the others he saw Gabriel.
They split up to cover more ground, Chinatown was big after all. Kono and Danny went back to look for Abby while Chin and Steve stayed on Gabriel. And even after a while they split up to cover more ground.
Chin hadn't caught sight of Gabriel or Rowan in a long time and that worried him. But he did see that flash of orange. Orange was the color of Rowan's electric void tricks, and if Rowan was here, if Rowan was fucking with Gabriel, Chin would guess she'd be doing it using the void. It would explain how they got off the damn building so fucking quickly.
So, he walked towards it, gun on the ready in case something went wrong. He got into the Hawaii Theater Center and heard it. Voices. One was Gabriel's and the other voice was… singing a song. God. It was really was Rowan.
He moved into the seating area and found them. Rowan and Gabriel on the stage. Gabriel was on the ground and Rowan… god who even knew what Rowan was doing.
Well she was singing for one thing.
For the debt you owe, gotta sell your soul. Cause you can't say no, no you can't say no. When your assets froze and your family goes, and you can't say no, no you can't say no.
There was something about the way she moved, like she was jerking. Like she was blinking from place to place. All he knew was that Gabriel looked terrified.
I'm gonna end you. I'm gonna. I'm gonna. I'm gonna end you.
He called her name and Rowan stopped. Her twisted dark song ending and she turned to him. She was pale, too pale, her face standing out against the vibrant red of her hair. Had her hair always been that bright? Her eyes were a hot white and there were orange electric bolts running up and down her body but not coming out of her like they used to, just painting her surface instead. She was using the void for sure but this was nothing like the times before. She looked to be in complete and utter control for the first time and he had a feeling that that wouldn't be good for anyone.
But it was the gunshot that startled him, because he hadn't been expecting it. He had jerked, crouching, his gun coming up as he search to see where the shot had come from but there was no one else with them. In that moment, Rowan flinched, crunching around some kind of injury, her hands pressed to her side. It was then that Chin could make out the gun in Gabriel's hand.
Rowan's hand came away from her side, they came back bloody but what came from her body wasn't blood but strings. Bright red strings that floated and coiled around her hands and seemed to drift upward as she just stared at her hands as if dumbfounded.
In a flash her eyes went from that static hot white to a cold jet black. An inhuman scream ripped from her and in one blast he was thrown back and the world descended into black strings, electric pops and dangerously twinkling bright lights.

Steve had figured out a lot of things since he had split up with Chin. Danny had doubled back to find him. Abby was with Grover, she got a tip from a concerned citizen that SWAT was getting ambushed, she took Chin's motorcycle to help. They had radioed for back up, for ambulances and no one had shown up.
From there it was easy to figure out that HPD's communications were clearly compromised. That's how Shioma knew about where to find Gabriel and they had clearly intercepted the SWAT call and any other call they had made since. Which meant that they weren't going to get help anytime soon.
They Danny told him the one that thing would make him turn around. That concerned citizen. It was Rowan. Abby saw her, talked to her. Rowan was back on Hawaii.
He put out a call to Kono, she said she thought she was Chin going into the Hawaii Theater Center. The plan was to meet him there. Steve had already sent Abby off to talk to Robert Coughlin, see if there were any corrupt cops that he was investigating that might be connected to her. He was so desperate he even told her to tell him that Steve would answer Robert's questions about Rowan and her app personally. He figured that would get Coughlin onboard.
After that, the plan was to think of some sort of trap to catch the HPD mole and get rid of the guys following them and then hope that Gabriel showed up in a hospital cause his injuries were pretty severe.
On top of that Jerry had just reported that Yakuza goons had shown up on the Hawaii Theater Center's street. Well that wasn't good now was it.
They were only a block away when Steve suddenly skidded to a stop. He felt it. It was like he had gotten shot, but he checked there was nothing there, he wasn't hit. He felt the pain, or an echo of it deep in his gut. He crumpled against it, against the pairing of a deadly squeezing in his chest. Her screams bouncing around his head.
He managed the barest whisper of her name before he took off running towards where he knew Rowan to be. Deep in his heart, knowing that she wasn't just in trouble because she was dying.

Wo Fat was on a dock in Santa Monica, having just finished inventorying a shipment of guns and wondering why his sister and her bodyguard were so quiet and why she needed Conejo so desperately last night. He checked his phone again to see if Sandy could report anything, and found nothing. He had brought Sandy back when he left Rowan with the new guy she called Mackie because he didn't trust him. But Sandy had a hard time keeping track of Rowan now that she could jump through the void, if she had jumped Sandy would be confused until Rowan did something to activate her.
It was sudden, the pull that took a hold of him between his shoulder blades and slammed him into the void and then spat him back out. He collided, with great force, into Conejo, who, he later found out, had been rushing towards the epicenter of the blast and had not been expecting the shock wave to also include Wo Fat.
In the terrible white silence after hitting the ground, Wo Fat heard the screams and the discordant ripping of worlds and knew that his sister was in otherworldly trouble again. But he never expected to open his eyes to a Hawaii blue sky.
God no.
Anywhere but Hawaii.
There came a terrible crackling like pavement upending, metal against rock, metal already giving way and with it came a terrible screeching shriek of a bird of prey. He had heard that before.
It took all his effort to pull himself up only to be blinded but what he saw. Rowan was back in black-hole mode and that did not bode well for him.

Across from where Wo Fat now stood, on the other side of the void bubble, Steve McGarrett, with Danny not a few paces away from him, struggled to get himself back up. A blast had thrown him back but getting back up, seeing what was in front of him had blinded him.
He could tell that it was Rowan, but not a version of her he recognized. She was surrounded by a swirling vortex made of nothing but swirling strings, crackling electric bolts and flashes of explosions. She was encased in it, she seemed to move in slow motion, throwing her hands around cause portals to open everywhere. Men with guns fell away into the unknown, unnatural phenomenon cracked at her feet, escaping upward from underground and splintering outward, throwing cars aside and slicing buildings.
But when she wasn't throwing she was screaming, this inhumane animalistic falling from her lips. She'd curl around something, curl into herself and she'd howl like she was in agony. That echo bounced through him again. With each portal, with each pavement cracking attack, he felt the tightening in his chest, squeezing the life out of him, but it was the quickening pulse in his belly, a dull ache spreading out from the side of his naval that had him worried.
Jesus.
Danny was up. Danny was seeing it too.
Steve took a step forward and Danny latched onto him, just as a portal opened and a mail box hurled itself out of the darkness. "Are you out of your mind?"
Steve wasn't listening. Rowan turned to him, those eyes that weren't hers, but all black orbs of emptiness hit him and her voice echoed into his head.
Help me.
Steve was already moving.

Wo Fat, however, already knew that penetrating that vortex, without the proper tools, was not something he could do. He and Conejo, using gear that her father had specifically made for them and for this moment, gear neither really knew how to use, set up to do the impossible. Conejo had taken off his void vest, handed it to Wo Fat and then attached the metal braided coil to the back of him and then to a pole, a grounder, Dr. Pierce had called it. It would keep him tethered to this reality, which meant if something closed around them, Con could pull them out.
Con had his disrupter, the small rifle their father had give them. It wasn't like him to have it on him, but Wo Fat knew something had happened on their last jump, a jump that neither of them would talk about, just that it had happened on Hawaii, so he must have brought all that gear just in case they had another incident.
The plan was to shoot it at the field, JUST as Wo Fat was set to breach it so he could make it through to her. He had only ever had to do this once before and Wo Fat was certain it had been a fluke. Just like that last time, when he looked up to set himself and ready himself for what he was about to do, he found that someone had already found their way inside.
Steven McGarrett was never far away when it came to Rowan. So why his appearance surprised Wo Fat he didn't know. He had gotten her out of the vortex before, of course he'd be the one to just walk through the vortex's shield like he was walking through a curtain.
Maybe he'll shut her down… like last time.
Yes. Maybe. Steve had shut down the vortex last time but he had also, almost, taken Rowan back to Hawaii with him. Both Wo Fat and Conejo watched as Steve, moving as slow as Rowan seemed to be moving, reached her side, his arms outstretched. His fingertips touched her and then his whole hands had a hold of her arms, pulling her to his chest. For a moment they were still, Rowan's hands on his chest, Steve's arms moving up from her shoulder to her face.
And then he kissed her.
There was a heartbeat between the start of that kiss and the red strings exploding from both of them and tangling up until Wo Fat couldn't see either of them again more.
Nope. Not good.
We gotta get me in there. It was all Wo Fat said. It was all Conejo needed. Wo Fat took off sprinting, trusting that when the time came Conejo would do what he was supposed to do.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
I keep forgetting how heavy the void feels.
He thought that every time he jumped in. But this time, when Wo Fat jumped into the void, it wasn't just his voice he heard in his head saying the exact same thing. He heard McGarrett's timber echoing the same words as his though he wasn't sure how.
He moved, forcing his limbs towards the swirling mass of red strings that had enveloped Steven and Rowan. He didn't care about Steven, he could stay stuck in those strings, but Rowan had to come out, Rowan had to come with him.
He reached a hand out but didn't have to push the strings away. A single pink line left his hand repelling the red away from them until Rowan was uncovered still stuck to McGarrett by the lips. Wo put a hand to Rowan's shoulder and while jerking her back, punched Steve in the face.
Steven went reeling back, the vortex finally started to crack and falter. Rowan's eyes were back to the normal blue, with tinges of white and black in the corner, so the void still had a hold of her but it was losing its grip. He turned, gripped the metal braided cord and tugged.
We need to go.
He words floated around them. Rowan blinked her eyes, swinging between him and where Steven lay on the ground. God she never was good at letting that man go.
Rowan please. Help me!
His words, not even spoken, still sounded frantic to his ears. But it was that panic that got her back. She seemed to recognize what she had done and what was happening. Grabbing his arm, she pulled him, pulled him towards the edge of the field where Conejo waited. A portal open beside him, one he was already moving through. She pushed Wo Fat forward, but his hand never left hers, and thank god he hadn't let go because otherwise he wouldn't have felt the jerk when something else grabbed a hold of Rowan.
Steve, struggling to get up, could only watch as the man who had taken her from him, started to pull Rowan away again. His heart screamed for her, she couldn't leave him again. She just couldn't. He stared at the strings around him and as if they heard his internal cries the red strings all shot forward from his chest and attached themselves to Rowan, jerking her back and away from Wo Fat.
He used the strings to get up, pulling her back towards him. It wasn't that she didn't want to go, she had turned, her arms out stretched to him, her own red strings shooting out to grip him right back, no, what held her back was Wo Fat. He had grabbed a hold of her, his arms crossing over her chest trying to drag her back.
You're not taking her!
Steve's words echoed around them, flying not from his mouth but his heart.
CON!
She's mine!
CON! DO SOMETHING!
Give her back to me!
NEVER!
But Steve was winning, Rowan was slowly slipping out of Wo Fat's grasp, slowly inching towards him. He had been so focused on Rowan, so focused on getting her back, on her not leaving him that he didn't notice the other man at their side until he was bringing down a blue electric sword on the strings between he and Rowan.
The second it made contact, Steve felt it, because as that sword sliced through their strings, it felt as if that sword was slicing through his very chest. The blast from that severance knocked him off his feet, knocked him to the ground, and painted the world in an awful static white.
When Steven came to, his friends were around him, trying to help him as he curled around the bleeding slicing pain in his chest trying to numb it, screaming in utter agony for the only girl who could save him until the pain eventually took him into the spirally darkness.
Across the world in a lavish room in Andalucía Spain, three people crashed into the room. Two men, panting, one still tied up in a thinly braided metal cord, one holding a glowing electric sword. And one girl, screaming on the top of her lungs in anguish, her finger nails tightly scraping at her chest as if trying to carve out the pain. Wo and Con struggled to keep her hands away from herself both trying to hush her, but her body convulsed and her screams continued until her eyes rolled back into her skull and she finally collapsed back into Wo Fat's embrace.
The problem was, in both instances, neither Rowan's brothers, nor Steve's friends, knew how to put them back together again… not when both Rowan and Steve needed each other to be whole.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
When Steve woke up, he was back and home and the pain in his chest had been reduced to a dull ache. It was dark, so he knew he had been out for a while and judging by the soft hum of voices he heard downstairs that he had not been just dropped off at home.
He got up, noting that someone had got him out of all his battle gear and his boots. He changed into something a little less singed and dusty. The night sky told him that his friend had no doubt waited a long time for him to wake and it while it was very nice of them to do that, he figured they could wait a little longer for him.
He didn't have a shower, but he did at least wash the dust and blood off of his face and realized that some of it was his own. He had all these jagged little cuts along his jaw from the blast and a giant purple bruise from Wo Fat's punch. He tried to push away the day's events because it hurt to think that he had her back in his arms and he lost her to Wo Fat again. Even if the man had cheated.
When he finally thought himself ready, both in appearance and in emotion he headed down those stairs. He found his friends all sitting in his living room, the ones that had been with him that day, the ones who knew about Rowan's powers. There were empty pizza boxes on his coffee table and bottles of beer and cans of pop around them. Well at least they had eaten, he should have been hungry but he couldn't muster up any other feeling other then pain.
His friends all stood when they noticed him. Grover offered him his arm chair which his weary bones were grateful to sit in. Once he was settled and they had offered him food and drink that he both turned down. Then they all exchanged glances.
They had something to say to him, an intervention of sorts. He wondered who it was that was expected to lecture him?
"How you feeling buddy?" Danny asked. Ah so it was going to be him.
"Like someone carved open my chest." A hand absently moving to his sternum to try and rub some of the pain out of it.
He glanced at his friends, they were all exchanging glances and staring at him funny, that meant not good things.
"Do you, uh, remember? You know before?"
"Rowan in a swirling vortex of electricity and strings? Yes, I remember," Steven answered bitterly. "I'm assuming she and Wo Fat got away?"
"They did," Kono confirmed. "They uh… went through some portal."
Steve nodded and swallowed down any worry he could feel climbing up his throat. Alright, so it looked like she could use the void to travel now, and uh… whatever that vortex thing was, that didn't mean she could go home. She was still with Wo Fat clearly, so it was okay.
"Did you know she could do that?" Chin asked him but Steve shook his head.
He glanced to the others and saw that they were looking back and forth at one another again. God, what did that mean?
"Have you been feeling any… uh… twinges lately?" Grover asked next but Steve just shook his head again. "Are you sure?"
"Why?"
"Because we don't think it's the first time, she's done something like this," Kono said and Steve frowned.
"What are you talking about?"
"Look… Gabriel… he said Rowan was haunting him, he'd see her everywhere and, in the theater, before he shot her…"
"Gabriel shot her?!" Steven thundered but Chin waved him off.
"Steve, she got to Hawaii somehow, without us knowing, without coming through customs. You saw that vortex, we watched her and Wo Fat walk through a portal and vanish, we think she's using the void…"
Steve shook his head. "No, she's not. That thing today… that is what happens when she is not in control. That… it was exactly like all her other accidents."
"We're not saying what happened today is normal, but it doesn't change that she's been doing some… weird things," Kono said but Steve shook his head refusing to believe it.
"When my family and I were getting chased… Renee… Renee and the kids, they all said they saw Rowan, she electrocuted the guy coming at them and then walked off. Disappeared in the trees. And I saw her too, or at least I think I did. She shocked my guy and then you showed up and she was gone, I shrugged it off as not possible but what if she's using the void to travel?"
Steve shook his head again. "No," he repeated. "She can't be."
"But did you feel her travel here today?"
"Well… no…" Steve whispered. "But we don't know if she…"
"But did you feel anything?"
"I felt her get shot," Steve snapped. "I felt the start of that… that vortex, and I felt it when they cleaved the strings between us, okay. So, she can't be using the void without me feeling it… okay? She just can't be!"
He was shouting and gotten to his feet before he knew it with all his friends staring at him. But it was Danny who caught on to the crux of the issue.
"Why can't she, Steven?" he asked.
"Because she can't!" he repeated. "Because if she can use the void without me knowing, without me feeling it, what's going to stop her from jumping into that void and going home? Huh?" His friends went silent and stared at him. He couldn't stand the look in their eyes. "Don't look at me like that. I know how stupid that sounds, okay? But if she's still here there's still a chance I can get her back but there's nothing I can do to get her if she goes home and I just… okay… she just… she can't be using the void, okay? Not without me knowing, okay. I just can't accept that she can do that, okay?"
"She used the void to save my life," Chin abruptly told him. "She showed up with Sin Nombre shot the guys coming at me and then did some void stuff to take the bullet out of my kidney. She's using the void Steve. It's clear as day. You can be in denial all you want. But that's not going to help you. Wo Fat and Sin Nombre had equipment to deal with her little… incident. They had to get it from somewhere, right?"
Probably her father. But he couldn't go to them after what he did. Steve wouldn't look at his friends. He couldn't and after a while they let it go.
"I heard from Abby. She… she and Coughlin caught the HPD leak," Chin said. "Uh… Gabriel… he died in that blast… it uh… it decimated the whole street. Jerry said he lost all communications and all electronics within a mile of that blast zone were destroyed."
That was a lot to take in, but it meant that Rowan's void powers, which had always been somewhat electrical, were capable of taking out electronics. It explained why her phone never survived her jumps, it explained why lights blew up when she used her powers around them. While it was good that all communications and electronics were taken down at the time, that there wouldn't be any video proof of what Rowan had done, it meant there wouldn't be any way for him to figure out where they had gone. As if he could track a portal.
"We gave the Governor a nice little story. That, it was a bomb that Michelle Shioma had her men plant. She got away too by the way, though all the men she sent… they're dead," Danny told him and he nodded.
Chin cleared his throat and Steve turned to him. "Coughlin says… told Abby that is, that, when you were up to it, he wanted that intel on Rowan. Like you promised."
Yeah, he had promised that, hadn't he? Well, there was nothing he could do now except follow through on his promise, and try and figure out how Rowan had done any of the things she had just done.
