A/N: Happy Monday my wonderful Readers! So we're getting there. Just two more weeks (including this one) before we get to Season 7. The year of separation is almost over! And right now, we get to see how Wo Fat and the others reacted to Rowan's last void incident. Don't forget to leave me a review and I'll see you guys on Wednesday!
Chapter 283
After that incident, Wo Fat was, not only livid, but four times as unreasonable. He screamed, he shouted, he called her all sorts of names and then, he actually cried. She had been utterly shocked to see him do it. To watch him collapse into the chair across from her and actually cry. She watched real tears actually fall from his eyes.
But when he shouted: "Don't you understand what could have happened?" she realized just how badly this all could have gone. She had gotten shot again, and her attempt to fix her strings had brought Steven to her again. He wasn't just afraid that Rowan was going to die or get lost in the void, but Steven had almost gotten her back too. It was like the trifecta of nightmares for her brother.
"It was just like the basement again. I was right back there except it wasn't a video, it wasn't people I could save you from if I got there in time. This was something stronger than me, something I could lose you in if you go to far and if Steve were to take you… I don't think I'd ever managed to get you back from him a second time, Ro."
These were all valid concerns and it took her hugging him for a whole hour long to calm him down. A whole hour in which Conejo freaked out over what had happened and made her give him a detailed report.
So, when he didn't want to go back to California right away, Rowan was more than willing to comply. Once he was calm, well… actually, when she was sleeping, Conejo pulled her aside and asked her what the hell had happened. Then she had to explain it all, how she lost Gabriel, how she got shot, and how after that things got a little fuzzy, though her throat kind of hurt, she had a knew scar, coincidentally very close to where her scar from getting stabbed was, and she definitely remembered making out with Steve.
Oh, wouldn't Catherine be mad? She really wanted to tell her knock that smug smirk right off her face. Yeah, she may have married him, but Steve still wanted her, clearly.
Conejo made a face at that comment and Rowan had dropped that part of the conversation for the rest of their stay in Andalucía. But it was clear that they wouldn't want her using the void any time soon. Probably ever again, after what had just happened, she wasn't even sure she wanted to try messing with the void like that again.
They stayed together in Andalucía for a whole week before Wo Ft felt comfortable enough to let Rowan send them back to California. He did have business to attend to after all. Rowan had been strapped into every protective measure the boys had gotten from her father for this little hop to her apartment in California. Even with that going well, the boys stayed strapped to her all through their little hop to Wo Fat's office somewhere in Santa Monica.
Once they were gone she went for the phone she had left behind, purposely so Wo Fat couldn't trace her with Sandy and found a lot of messages from her Mackie. Aww, she had missed him, not nearly as much as she missed Steven, but that was something right? It could grow into something more… right?
She dialed his number and waited for him to pick up. When he did, she got a: "Oh my god, Rory!"
That's right, she had forgotten that he didn't know her real name.
"Hey, family business got to be pretty… uh… chaotic," she said. "I know I've been gone for a while and I'm sorry but did you maybe want to go for lunch? You know if you're not at work or not busy?"
"Are you back at your apartment?"
"Yeah."
"I'll be there in five minutes."
Rowan felt better now that she had managed to get a hold of him. She knew that she would have to think of something pretty spectacular to make up for disappearing and only leaving a note, so she had been working on something while in Andalucía. So, while she waited for him to arrive, she packed up her guitar.
Angus got there literally five minutes later, he had a big grin on his face and all he wanted to do was wrap her up in his arms and kiss her for a bit. Which to her, felt wrong, now that she had a fresh reminder on how it felt to be kissed by Steven. God she wished she didn't have that echo, that reminder living in her skin but she did.
She disengaged quickly and together they walked to the nearest café where they ordered their usual coffee drinks, or in Rowan's case, a coffee-flavoured more-like-mostly-milk-and-sugar slushie. She asked the barista for a favour before sitting down with Angus to talk about all that the other had missed.
He had cases to tell her about, most importantly of a nuke that was somewhere in Los Angeles. They missed the actual sale of it, but hey were trying to track down the terrorists behind the attack before they armed the bomb. Then he asked what she had been up to and she didn't have anything to tell him. She didn't know how to tell him where she had been so when the conversation turned to what she had been doing the seven or so days she was gone she said: "I wrote you a song."
For a second Angus was thrown and then he said: "Wait… really?"
Rowan was already going for her guitar. "Yeah, I spent all week on it. It's special… just for you. And the barista says it's okay if I sing it for you. If you don't mind."
"Mind? You wrote me my own song! No one's ever written me a song before!"
Rowan smiled, and began to play loving the way he looked excited to hear her songs. Steve was always a good listener, he always used to watch her in awe, but it was something different to have someone eagerly awaiting her words, and music. It reminded her a little bit of being at home, when she's play guitar for Evolet and Sarah would eagerly chant for new songs. And maybe a little bit of Grace who was her number one fan in this reality.
She forced the sad memories away and began to sing.
A little bit younger, a brown leather jacket. A bad reputation, insatiable habits. He was onto me, one look and I couldn't breathe. Yeah, I said, "If you kiss me, I might let it happen."
I swear on my life that I've been a good girl. Tonight, I don't wanna be her.
They say he likes a good time. My, oh my. He comes alive at midnight, every night. My brother doesn't trust him. My, oh my. He's only here for one thing. Let's go. But so am I.
She stopped there, figured that was enough she didn't want to play too much in the café. She slowly put her guitar down and then waited for Angus to say something.
"There's obviously more, but you know…"
"Oh my god! You wrote that for me? About me?" he cried. Rowan nodded and that grin on his face widened. "Oh wow, that's just… that's just…"
Then whatever he was going to say fell off his lips the second he got a call. His phone had been sitting face up on the table and even from where she was she could see that it was Jack calling.
"Oh, one second."
She nodded and he took the call and as he did she sort of stopped paying attention. Her eyes drifted to the window and that would be where she saw the cars that seemed to be blocking the street, the people that looked an awful lot like undercover agents sent to cover the door. And behind one of the people behind one of those cars was Jack.
A whisper of dread ran through her. She didn't like this at all. "Mackie… Mackie what's going on?"
He turned his eyes wide with guilt and she knew right then and there that this was going to bad. So, she wasn't so much surprised when the men outside kicked the door in and swarmed their little table to arrest her, just a little upset… and well… just as betrayed as when she found out that Steven had gotten married.

Angus hadn't been allowed to be in the car that took Rory to the Phoenix Foundation. So, he packed up her guitar as carefully as he could and followed in his own car. When he got to the Phoenix Foundation, he was told that he would be, under no circumstances, allowed anywhere near the interrogation of Rory Wickerby.
He was too close to this, Thornton had said. Yeah, but his team wasn't? Jack wasn't? Just him?
But he wasn't about to leave her alone. She was probably afraid, and nervous. She'd want to see a familiar face and he wanted to be there with her, for her.
So, he broke into the interrogation area and what he found was Nikki alone at their computer database which meant that Jack had gone in on his own.
That could go either very, very well, or very, very badly.
Nikki turned when he came in looking him up and down behind a narrowed gaze. "What are you doing here Mac? Thornton said you weren't to be involved."
"I'm not, I'm just here for support."
Jack came out of the room, slamming the door shut with the shout of: "She's fucking impossible!" Okay so it was probably going very well for Rory and very bad for Jack. He stopped short of the two of them staring at Angus as if he were disappointed.
"Aw, come on Mac! Why are you here?"
"For support! And maybe a little bit because I want to know why you had to arrest my girlfriend."
"Because her brother sold a nuke to someone who wants to blow up our city. Now you said that she was in contact with her brother, that he told her about the things he did."
Oh god, he had. He had mentioned that. But he hadn't meant for this to happen. "I mean… in passing, he didn't really go into detail."
"Yeah well she needs to tell us what she knows about that damn nuke."
Angus glared at him. "She's not talking to you, is she?"
"No! She just stares at me with those unfeeling eyes and she just looks so…"
"Intimidating?"
"Is that the look she gave you every time you tried to approach her?" Angus nodded. "How the hell did you end up talking her into going out with you if she kept looking at you… like that?!"
"I unno, she changed her face once she calmed down. I've seen Wo Fat make the same face. Look, she's not going to talk to you. But I…"
"Thornton was clear. You can't be…"
"Do you wanna go back into that room and have her looking at you like that?"
No. No Jack did not.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
The door opened again and this time it was Angus coming into the room. She sort of felt bad for hitting Jack with the Ice Queen, he had never seen it before and it clearly unnerved him. He must have thought she'd be some weeping girl who would demand her one phone call, but as soon as he started asking questions, she knew she couldn't ask for a phone call. Because he'd want her to call Wo Fat.
This was another one of those traps. Just like MI6. And she had liked Mackie. She was more than a little upset that he had done this to her even after she warned him about what she'd do if he did.
No, she'd get out of this herself. Once she had a little more info, once she knew what she was going to do with her Mackie, she was going to void her way out of this arrest and then go and get her brother.
"Hey how are you doing?" He had a can of ginger ale in his hand, obviously for her. He put it in front of her as he sat down. "I thought this might calm you down."
Rowan refused to touch it, she just pinned that Ice-cold glare onto the man she had been dating for the last month and a half and asked: "What is going on?"
"Well we suspect that a terrorist is planning an attack on Los Angeles."
"And you think my brother sold him the nuke?"
"No, we have proof he sold the terrorists the nuke," he said pushing forward a picture which was of Wo Fat with some guy in a turban shaking hands over a briefcase and a massive box. Goddamn how did he keep missing these surveillance cameras? She had to start going on his trades so she could knock the electronics out.
Except she knew she couldn't do that because then she'd do damage to the nuke and Wo Fat wouldn't want that.
"Okay so why does your boss think that I would know anything about that?" she asked. When he just stared at his hands she realized that it was because he thought she'd do that. "You think… you think I know about this? That I was involved or something? Did you tell them I was involved?"
He sat across from her guilt all over his features. " No… not really. I mean…I… I didn't mean for this to happen."
"What did you tell them?"
"That the last time you had your brother over he mentioned a job he did in passing. He was vague about it, but we figured it out quick. That massacre a few weeks ago. That was him."
"Okay so? You were right there, he told me afterwards. I don't know what he's doing unless he tells me and he rarely gives me details."
"See, that's the problem Rory. You know what he's up to, you know where he is."
"No, I only know afterward. I've told you that…"
"Either way that makes you an accomplice and that means that you… you know what he's up to. Which means you know about the sale of the nuke and you know who he sold it to!"
"No, no, I don't know that stuff, he doesn't tell me that stuff and he definitely wouldn't let me anywhere near a bomb!" she cried.
"Okay, but you just spent the last week with him!"
"No I didn't. I was with Con, my other brother, Wo joined us later, honest… I… I was dealing with something… something to do with Jamie…"
"You mean Steven McGarrett? His file says his middle name is James, so I'm guessing that's where you get Jamie from." Rowan just stared at him with her mouth open in surprise because she was sort of hoping that he never would figure out that she was Rowan and she sure as hell hadn't wanted him to ever figure out about Steven. "And don't tell me he was here causing issues because a day after you left, he got in some major blow out with the Yakuza in downtown Hawaii and a whole street blew up."
Ah that blown up street was her, she was wondering what they said had caused that, or if they had just thrown her under the bus and told everyone about her powers. She was guessing no because Angus wasn't asking her about it.
Rowan looked down she didn't have a clever lie to tell him and across from her, he sighed. "I just… god… this is a mess."
"How much have you told Steven," she asked softly and he started.
"I don't…"
"I know you know who I am. Who I really am. I need to know how much of what you know made it to Hawaii…"
"I don't know," he admitted hanging his head. "But there's a note on your file saying to contact him if you're ever detained. But you're not confirming you're Rowan Pierce right now… are you?"
Rowan just stared at him. There was a chance that they could call Steven? Yeah that would not be good. Why was that even a note on her file? What the hell was wrong with this guy? Why the hell did he want her so much.
"No," her voice low and wispy. "I'm not confirming that."
He nodded and folded his hands. "I have to tell them something, Ro."
Rowan nodded. "Alright," she whispered. "Alright. Okay, well, you can tell them that, due to personal reasons, I'm going to be disappearing in mysterious circumstances."
She said it with a smile while Angus just stared at her. "You're uh… you're kind of detained aren't you…" When she just stared at him, he sighed and tried to reach for her hand again, but she pulled it away from her. Angus sighed at her. "I'm going to try my best to get you out of this, but it would help if you could get us something that could help us find this nuke." And then he put her phone in front of him. "Maybe you could call your brother, we won't trace the call I promise."
Oh yeah that was a lie, they had no doubt put something in her phone while they had it. She wasn't dumb but she believed him when he said he was going to try and help her, he just expected her to turn on her brother to get that help. She refused to look at him as he got up or the phone he had put in front of her and then she just sat there and waited until they left.
As soon as the door shut behind him. Rowan sighed. "I'm Rowan Pierce and I'm activating the Sanctuary network."
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Jack was waiting for him on the other side of the doorway. He was waiting for answers but Angus had none, which meant, when Thornton found out that they had let Angus into her interrogation room, they were screwed. All of them were going to get reprimanded, Angus might get fired. His dad was gonna kill him if he had to fire his son.
"What did you get?"
"Nothing, but I think that's because she legitimately doesn't know about the bomb. She's been off the grid for a while, it's entirely possible that she had no idea what was going on."
"He sold that nuke and then they went off the grid together. I'm sure while they were off doing whatever it was, they were doing they had a chit chat and his job came up."
"Well I've left her with her phone, it has a tracking software imbedded in it so if she calls her brother… and I mean, she will call her brother, we'll know and be able to track her call."
"Wait… wait," Nikki cried. "You gave that woman her phone?"
Angus turned to her surprised. "Yes, why?"
"Because you think she's Rowan Pierce! Do you have any idea how bad it could be if she's really Rowan Pierce and she has her phone?"
"Well, we're like 100% positive she's Rowan…"
"Oh my god!"
"What?!" Jack cried. "What could be so bad about Rowan Pierce having a phone. We want her to call Wo Fat!"
"Yes, but Wo Fat created an app for Rowan, one that could…"
Hello and Welcome to the Sanctuary network. Please wait while I familiarize myself with your operating software.
"Oh my god. Well speak of the devil," Nikki cried. "This it!"
"What the hell is this" Jack asked looking at the computer screens that had all gone bright fucking red and blank.
"This is what I was trying to warn you about. It's the Sanctuary network! This is the world's only living computerized network. It's the most sophisticated piece of coding…"
"It's hacking our network," Jack reminded her and she nodded but did nothing.
"She's got a firewall sledge hammer but just watching her do it… I never thought I'd ever be this lucky."
Initializing complete. Phoenix Foundation primary controls are now mine. Locking down facility.
Just like that everything went down, the doors the shutters, and all their cell doors swung shut. Even the lights went out. But at least the emergency generator kicked in so they had the emergency lights on.
"Why the hell would they want us locked down? Wouldn't they want us open so they could break in?"
Turning off all monitoring equipment in interrogation room 3.
"That's Rory's room."
"Oh my god Mac. Get the picture. She is obviously Rowan. She changed her name, her name is really Rowan!"
"Yes, because she's hiding from an abusive ex!" Angus argued. Together they went to the interrogation door, they struggled to pull at it, but it wasn't until Jack pulled out his gun and shot the handle off the door that they managed to get into it. Not that it mattered because Rowan was gone.
They both went into the room. The window was still barred. There was no hole in the wall, the airduct was still intact and she wasn't hiding under the table or behind the door. So… where in the hell had she gone?
"She was in this room, right?" Jack asked him as if Angus hadn't just walked out of that room.
"I mean… yeah, she was just here."
"So why isn't she here?"
"Hey look at this," Angus said moving towards there table.
There sitting on the table, written on the back of that surveillance photo was a name and an address. She had given them the location of the nuke and the name of who had bought it.
From outside in the main area they heard that computerized voice again.
Erasing all evidence and memory of Professional from this hard drive and from all electronic devices in the area.
A bar appeared on all their electronics, including Angus' and Jack's phones and they watched it count down percentiles until it was complete.
Thank you for your cooperation and have a nice day.
Angus was completely shocked. She really had vanished in mysterious circumstances.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Wo Fat was part way through packing up the last in the shipment of guns he was going to run to Miami when his phone rang. He picked it up wondering why his sister would call him now.
"What's up, my favourite little imouto?"
"Nothing, what are you doing?"
"Packing, you?"
"Also packing," she replied and Wo Fat blinked his eyes. Conejo came out from the dock throwing his cigarette to the side of the door and nodding to him. They had been together since leaving Rowan in her apartment, but it had only been a few hours there was nothing he could think of that could be wrong. I mean, he had just gotten her out of trouble, she couldn't be in trouble again so soon… right?
"Are you okay?" Wo Fat asked her and Conejo frowned. Immediately more interested in what was going on with Wo Fat's phone call.
"She good? Does she need to pull me? I'll get my mask."
On the other end of the phone Rowan laughed. "Tell him to stand down. I'm fine. I do have a question though. You miss me?"
"Sure, course I miss you, but I just saw you. We were together for a whole week," he reminded her. For a moment she was silent and he added: "What's the matter? Are you homesick already? Or just brother-sick? I don't know what the equivalent is, help me out here."
"Yes, I do miss you, even if I just saw you. I miss you both. You guys done with business?"
"Oh, you're going to come for a visit?"
But the phone went quiet and when he looked down he saw that she had hung up. That was strange. But it was how he noticed that there was an alert from the Sanctuary app saying that, not only had Rowan activated it, but she had been arrested. By a unit that he was pretty sure her Mackie worked out of.
"She's been arrested."
"What?!" Conejo cried coming to stand beside him to look over his shoulder as he looked at the phone screen. But before he could voice his concern there was a pop and wave of static electricity that killed his phone instantly. Damn he should have kept the protective case on it.
Both men turned and Rowan, with portal still engaged, pushed one suitcase forward while dragging the other behind her. Conejo moved to take the bag from her while Wo Fat moved forward to wrap her up in a big hug.
"Are you okay?" he asked. Rowan just shook her head, dropped her hold on the bag and hugged him back. Holding him tightly as she shook in his grasp and let the tears fall down her cheek.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Two things were missing from the Phoenix foundation, not including all the files that Sanctuary at wiped off their database. The first being Rowan's phone and the second being her guitar.
He wasn't sure how she had done it but she had gotten out, and if she was taking those two things with her there was a good chance that she wasn't coming back.
Together with Jack they had raced back to her apartment where he let himself in and looked around. Jack looked around too but there was no sign of Rowan.
"Alright, well she has to be coming back."
But Angus wasn't so sure. "No, no, she's gone."
"How do you know? Half her stuff is still here."
"Just the stuff that doesn't matter."
Jack looked around again. The flowers Angus had got her were still on the table in the vase she had purchased while out at farmer's market with him. The potted plants were still out on the balcony. Her fridge was still covered in the magnets they had bought and the pictures they had taken. There were still clothes in their closet and her sheets and linens were all still there.
"Her guitar is gone. All her red-bottom heels are gone. The clothes that Wo Fat bought her, her toothbrush, all her perfumes. They're gone. She took the things that were important to her. She's gone. She's not coming back."
Jack looked around again at the fabulous apartment that neither of them would have been able to afford. It seemed darker and quieter now that she was gone.
"I'm so sorry, Mac."
Angus continued to look around until he couldn't bear to look at that apartment again.
"Let's… let's just go, okay?"
Jack nodded and luckily didn't ask him anymore questions. They just went off to find that Nuke Rowan had handed up to them on a silver platter. And for the rest of the day he tried to pretend that it didn't hurt that things had ended and she hadn't even bothered to actually… tell him.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
The jump back to Spain was easy. They arrived in the living room which was purposely designed without any electrics around for her to fry. Con went to the kitchen to determine if there was food. There wasn't, so he went out for food so they wouldn't starve. Wo Fat asked if she wanted to talk about what happened but she hadn't.
He did make her give him the cliff noted version of the events that transpired that lead to her leaving Los Angeles and Mackie behind, but after that he let her go to her room. Once in her room she found that she was essentially all cried out.
She was sad that things were over, that he had betrayed her like that. But she wasn't irrevocably changed by it either. It hadn't done the same damage as losing Steven had. And that was a shame because she had really liked Angus MacGyver, or at least she thought she did.
Rowan shut herself in her room for the rest of the day though. Going between lounging in her bed to staring out at the ocean. At that moment she had been looking out at the coast line from the balcony of her room, watching the sun set into the ocean.
The Spanish mansion atmosphere always did wonders for her. Already, just being by the sea and in the sun had calmed her. She always felt like being here was her own little world away from the trials and tribulations of everything else. And again, it saddened her to think that she just had to spend a day off on her own in paradise to get over Mackie.
"How are you feeling?" Conejo asked from the roof above her. He must have climbed over to come see her.
"You could have come through the door," she chided as he hopped down off of the roof and onto the balcony railing.
"Yes, but then where would I have made my entrance?" Wo Fat asked from behind her.
Rowan half turned to him a sort of wry smile on her face. She had locked the door, that meant he had picked the lock to get in there and she hadn't even noticed. "You two ganging up on me now?"
"No, we just want to know how you're doing," Wo Fat said leaning on the railing beside her. His back to the ocean so he could carefully study her face.
"I'm about as okay as I can be," she said.
Conejo hopped off the railing and onto the little balcony that was starting to get a little crowded. "Do you know what you want to do?"
"Yeah…" she said with a heavy sigh. "I kinda wanna go back to travelling with you guys." She caught their look of panic and she changed her tune. "I mean, we don't have to travel right now. I just want to stay with you two, can I do that? Can I stay with you?"
"Of course," Wo Fat said sincerely just as Con said: "I was thinking more like we send me to Cali and I fucking kill that asshole."
Wo Fat leant over Rowan to smack Conejo. "Of course, you can stay with us, though to be honest I'll need to go back to California to deal with my last shipment. And if there is really that much heat on me, we won't be able to travel for a while. At least not with me. So are you okay to stay here, or would you rather start traveling without me?"
"No, no, I want us to all be together. No one is getting left behind."
Wo Fat wrapped an arm around her shoulder and pulled her close. "Alright. Tomorrow you'll send me back to Cali, you and Con can stay here and then we'll discuss our next options, how does that sound?"
"It sounds great," she said smiling up to him.
"I think it would sound better if we sent me to California too to kill him, or at least to rough him up!"
Rowan playful smacked him with a fraction of the gusto she usually had and then wistfully said: "I need some tea, you guys coming?"
"In a minute," Wo Fast called as she walked away once she was out the door, he turned to Conejo and whispered: "That was bad, right?"
"I mean, I wouldn't say she's in a really bad position but she's definitely taken a step backwards."
"Yeah."
"We finally got her comfortable enough to be on her own and now she wants to travel with us again…"
"I don't mind, honestly. I'd rather have her where I can keep track of her."
"Not gonna lie… I kinda missed her."
"Yeah me too."
Wo Fat almost smiled. Did it surprise him that the two of them had gone back to the way things were, pre-Rowan, and neither of them were happy. They wanted to be back with Rowan.
"You know what this means right?" Conejo asked him and Wo Fat nodded.
"We've gone soft."
Conejo smacked him and growled: "Speak for yourself." Wo Fat just maintained eye contact and Conejo eventually sighed and said: "I mean, I already knew you had but I didn't think she'd get me!" Conejo cried.
"I did warn you."
Conejo just leant back on that railing with an angry huff. "She's gonna be in a funk until we can cheer her up," he told him like Wo Fat didn't already know. "What do you think we should do?"
"I unno, I'm kinda out of ideas that could keep us here. And if I have heat on me, there's no way I'll be able to travel. Even if we jump."
Con thought about it a moment. "I mean… I have one, but I unno if you'll like it."
Wo Fat was up for anything at this point. So as he and Conejo left Rowan's room to join her in the kitchen, he listened to his hastily thought out idea, and decided that if he could figure out the logistics he could make something like that work for his sister. He'd even let Conejo have all the credit.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve had put it off as long as he could but Robert Coughlin was determined to get his answers. So, after ducking him for at least a week, Robert showed up at Steve's place and Steve could no longer avoid him.
He ushered Coughlin in, offered him a beer and then let him sit on his couch.
"So…" Steve said after they eyed each other in silence for a little too long. "What did you want to know about Rowan?"
Coughlin cleared his throat and took out a note pad. "For starters, how did you come to be involved with her and her app?"
Steve scoffed. "Okay, well, I was the one who found her." Well whatever Robert was expecting, that was not it. "Yeah, girl fell out of an airplane and into the ocean. She was lucky to be alive. I fished her out, got her head check out, set her up with a citizenship and she uh… she stuck…"
"So that's why she doesn't come up before 2010?"
"No identity. We're assuming she was part of some doomsday cult of sorts. The kind where they live in bunkers and forsake society. Doctor's figured she had retrograde amnesia. It would come back when it came back. So far… it hasn't come back."
"I see… and this app of hers…"
"When she met Wo Fat, he decided to make it for her."
"Why?"
"Because Rowan gets in trouble and he was going into a supermax in Colorado. He didn't trust me with her safe keeping."
"So the app was for her protection?"
"Yep."
"But that wasn't what she used it for…"
Steve sighed and shook his head again. "No, she uh… she used it to interfere in my cases."
Coughlin nodded again and his head bent over that notebook. "You know," Steve started. "You might as well ask me. I was there you know, when she got the news about Chin and what Rex was doing."
Robert turned his eyes back up to Steve. "Yeah? And what did she say?"
"She told him to hand over the evidence."
"What evidence."
Steve really didn't want to tell him this, didn't want to give her up like that but after what Coughlin did to help them, the least he could do was tell them the truth. "Rowan was gunning for Gabriel long before your brother got involved. She took the money out of that account, she had proof of that."
"My brother never saw that evidence…"
"No. Probably not."
"So, what happened then?"
"When Rex came here the first time, he made the mistake of crossing Rowan. Wo Fat had to intervene that time, and Rex was warned not to do it again. When he became a repeat offender, Wo fat decided to deal with it."
Robert sat there for a moment staring at him and Steve added: "And yes. Wo Fat had a habit of using her app to do a lot of things she didn't ask for."
Robert nodded at that. "So, the order went through her app but she wouldn't have known."
"No. Not unless she went through each and every command, and she rarely did that unless I asked her to."
"You know an awful lot about that app."
"I tried to be in the know, but to be honest, I rarely saw it. I wanted her off of it and uh… as you can see, I lost that battle."
Robert half smiled. "Abby says the app is back."
"A half version of it, yes. It's uh… it's tracking…"
"Everyone but you, yeah she mentioned," he said. "She says it figured out who I was pretty quick."
"Usually it's faster I think they sat on the information before forwarding it to us."
Robert nodded. "One last question Commander and then we can call this done," he said before clearly his throat. "When was the last time you spoke to Rowan?"
"Last May, before she was taken to Japan."
God why did it hurt to say that? Had it really been so long? A full year since he had had a real conversation with her. Cause he didn't really call that bullshit birthday-call from her a real conversation.
Robert thanked him for the answers and quickly stood. "From where I'm standing it seems pretty clear that whatever Rowan is doing it has nothing to do with Five-0, and she probably had no idea about Wo Fat's orders for Rex. She seems to operate on her own agenda and even then, the agenda always seems to match up with ours. She's a very powerful ally to have."
Steve found himself smiling. "And if I ever see her again, I'll be sure to pass that message along."
Not long after that Robert left and that left Steve once again alone in his house. He had a feeling that went well but he just wasn't sure if it went well for Rowan. But she wasn't his problem anymore… right?
