Chapter 284
It had taken half of month of planning, of pulling in strings and calls. A lot of this planning had to be done in secrete as Conejo had had a really good idea and he had wanted it to be a surprise.
He had also wanted to be certain that certain things were done.
1. It had to be a concert. Like a proper concert.
2. It had to be during Alex Lockman's Stethoscopes tour.
Okay so it wasn't so much of a list as two points. Turned out, he had done some research on Alex and the Doctors when he was in Hawaii dropping off singles and renewing Rowan's writing contract. So, when he came up with the idea of having Rowan hijack a concert so she could perform for thousands of people, he said it would have to be one of Alex's concerts. Why? Because she wrote him a lot of songs, which meant that most of her songs would fit into her sets. And Wo Fat mentioned that Alex had tried to sue Rowan once, more a cautionary note then a brag, but that just solidified the decision. They were going to have Rowan hijack a Stethoscope's concert out of pure spite!
Wo Fat had wanted this to happen anywhere else. But Alex was on his last leg of the tour, ending in Hawaii. And Hawaii was the only place where Wo Fat had contacts in the entertainment industry who could get them in, and set up the hijacking without Alex knowing. He wouldn't even have to pay him that much.
It hadn't even taken much to convince Rowan to do it. She argued the whole: "I don't want to be famous for singing" point for about three minutes before they shut that down. This wasn't to be famous, after all, it was to be spiteful.
Then she tried the whole: "It's going to be in Hawaii what about Steven?" argument and that was fair. Except Wo Fat was going to jam all outbound signals so no video got out. So, there was no way for the video to get to him which means he wouldn't know. Plus, he was going to trust her to void in and out of there. There would be no way for Steve to track or trace her.
Then she tried to tell them that she was nervous. Which they shot out of the sky because she had been putting on concerts for Wo Fat's people for years and it would be almost the same thing as her birthday concert. She wasn't nervous for any of those.
With all the excuses knocked down and all the people paid off, their next big adventure was well on its way. The night of the concert, Wo Fat had Rowan jump them to Hawaii and he decided to haver her take him to all the places she loved there.
Together the three of them went to Rainbows for breakfast for lunch, the went to the Halona Blowhole, they went some Tiki bar that Rowan was comfortable with and told them all about her focus groups there. They drove by Nahele's school, then she made them drive by Steve's.
"I wonder if he has my car," she had asked them. Her pastel purple GTO. Wo Fat was going to say that he had it. It was something he meant to get back for her. He just you know, had to s teal it from Steven first. But Con had answered truthfully and absently with: "Sure he's got it in the garage."
Then they had to talk her out of stealing the car back then and there. Wo Fat couldn't let her go into the house. Con had figured out Catherine wasn't there by the lack of pictures, Rowan would too.
So Wo Fat drove away before she could jump out and go and steal back her GTO. He'd work on getting it for her, he told her. He'd steal it back for her, once they had a chance.
Then she hit him with another surprise. She wanted Nahele too. Once they were done travelling, she wanted to bring Nahele to Andalucía. Wo Fat wasn't good with kids, he was pretty sure Con wasn't good with kids. They were struggling just having Rowan in their lives, how were they going to handle a teenager?
Also, he was pretty sure if he stole Nahele too, Steven would come at them like a fucking freight train.
So, he told her he'd look into the logistics of that and hoped she'd just drop it. God things were getting so complicated, and they were only going to get worse. He didn't think this through, he really hadn't. Things were on their way to imploding, and maybe… maybe he could get a head of this now.
Maybe… maybe he could test Steven. See if he actually loved her, maybe he could let Conejo put a shotgun to the man's head and tell him to marry Rowan. Then they could figure out a plan that both Steve and Wo Fat were comfortable with.
He… he could let go of his sister if it meant that she was happy. Just… not all the way because he didn't trust Steve with her safety one bit.
But this was all a conversation for later, at that moment all they had to worry about was the concert Rowan was going to hijack.
Rowan practiced in their hotel room, selected the two songs she was going to sing. And when the time was right, they made their way to the Neal S. Blaisdell Center for Rowan Pierce's one and only debut.

Grace liked Nahele, he was nice. When he lost Rowan and then Steve and had to move, she had made sure to reach out at least once a week to see if he was okay. He was an older boy and usually they didn't like to hang out with little girls, so she wasn't really expecting much, but he always responded to her text messages. And he had been kind enough to chaperon a few of her friend's outings so her dad wouldn't be on her so much.
So, when he told her that his new foster parents had gotten him and his friends tickets to Alex Lockman and the Doctor's new tour, she had been excited for him. When he mentioned that there was an extra ticket and he'd be fine with her coming if her parents said it was okay, she knew she wasn't going to say no. Even though she didn't really like Alex and the Doctors, because all of his songs were originally Rowan's and only she did them justice, this was a chance to hang out with older boys and she wasn't about to pass that up.
Luckily the concert was on a night where Danno wasn't in charge and her mom loved Nahele. So once she said she was invited by Nahele, school night or not Grace was allowed to go. But this was a one-time occurrence because she had been doing so well in school these days.
She had dressed up nicely, used the make up tips that her Auntie Ro had given her and then waited for the Liang's to pick them up.
It was her, Nahele and two other boys also in his grade, Kai and Makani. They had relatively good seats and Nahele had been nothing but nice the whole time. The last time she had seen him was a family dinner at Steve's and she could tell that Nahele felt out of place, but even now he was giving off the vibe of feeling out of place. Maybe that was always how he felt. Like he didn't really have a place that he fit into.
She didn't want to bring that up now so they waited for the band to start playing and then when it did, she felt better. Because it was a lot like sitting in Rowan's purple GTO with the window down singing her songs loudly together.
She missed Sing-Along Saturdays. She wondered if Nahele missed them too.
"You wanna check the merch line now?" Nahele asked, his voice loud over the scream of the crowd and crash of the music.
She nodded, Nahele took Kai and Makani's order for merch and then together they left.
"It was better when Ro sang them," he said softly as they made their way out into the quiet hallways. "I know that's stupid, but it's true."
"I totally get it," Grace told him and he shot her a debonair smile.
"I knew you would," he told her and she beamed with pride, a pleasant pink tinge to her cheeks.
"You uh… you must miss her."
Nahele shot her a little bit of a look, a covert one, like he had a secret that he wanted to share but couldn't. "Yeah… I do."
"I miss her too. She just sort of… got me you know? Grownups always forget what it's like to be a kid, but Rowan never did you know?"
He nodded again but she could tell that the conversation was upsetting him so she changed the topic as soon as she could.
Luckily, as they thought, since the concert had started, the line up was now shorter. Which meant they got to the counter quicker than expected. The got everything they needed to get, paid the over-inflated price for them and got back with only missing a song and half.
They stopped to get some food to share, which was popcorn chicken and this giant drink that had to be the same size a small child. He let her pick which soda they got which was very nice of him. Then they went back to their seats.
Nahele doled out the merch to the right people, passed around the popcorn chicken and the giant drink and then suddenly all the lights went out.
There was a scream from the crowd, up the stage they could tell that Alex had not been expecting that. A fog machine came to life, the large screens behind Alex played nothing but crackling static and in the middle of the stage someone was rising from below.
Breakfast at Tiffany's and bottles of bubbles.
No, Grace knew that voice.
Girls with tattoos who like getting in trouble.
The lights were all pointed at this figure rising from below, she saw red and blonde hair, a tight black dress and mile high shoes. But she was facing the back of the house.
Lashes and diamonds and guys for my flings. Buy myself all my favourite things.
It was Rowan, she didn't even need to turn around, but she had to start the next verse. Grace glanced to Nahele to see if he had known this but the look on his face told her that he hadn't know at all.
Grace immediately went for her phone, she needed to call Danno. Uncle Steve needed to come here and see her, maybe work things out. God, she hoped he picked up.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
After Rowan's last incident Danny had to work twice as hard to get Steve back on track. The poor man was a wreck. Didn't help that he didn't take the "Yo, Rowan has fucking powers," talk well. They had wanted him to get it so they could think of a way to combat her powers. Even if that meant calling her father and asking for gear to latch onto her or something. But Steve wasn't at a place where he could accept that Rowan had powers. Probably because it meant that it would make it harder for him to track her. Or… you know impossible.
It took half a month, but Steve was finally at a place where he was okay. He wasn't jumping at every phone call or every shadow, or chasing after the wrong person. One wouldn't have thought it was possible but two days after the incident, Steven stopped chasing down their perp and ran down a red-haired woman and tackled her to the ground because he thought she was Rowan. Danny had never had to apologize to someone more in his life.
Danny was so proud that Steve had become a normal human being again. One that wasn't haunted with this longing for a girl who was… god knows where. He was so much better that for this game, Steve had organized a guy's night.
The game was on, all the Five-0 men were in the house eating snacks and drinking beer while all huddled together on Steve's couch. Danny had brought the sandwiches that everyone was chowing down on, Grover had brought his famous chilli, Chin brought the chips and dip and Jerry had brought the soda.
They were all having fun cheering their football team when Grace called and boy did she have a douzy. Yes, she had shouted "Rowan's here!" into the phone but Danny didn't want to believe it. Steve had just gotten back to normal, he didn't want to have to fix him again. But then she let him listen to the artist on the stage.
Been through some bad shit. I should be a sad bitch. Who woulda thought it turn me to a savage? Rather be tied up with calls and not strings. Write my own cheques like I write what you sing.
God he'd know that voice anywhere. Rowan was still on Hawaii. She was still on Hawaii and Steve had to know that before she disappeared again. For a moment he contemplated not telling him, but Steve not knowing had been a lot worse than him knowing, so he quickly made up his mind before he could change it again.
Rushing forward he snatched up the remote and began to flip through the channels. He had to find the concert one, because just telling Steve what he had just found out wouldn't do. He'd need proof.
"What the hell man?!" Steve cried over all the dismayed shrieks of all the men in the room. "What are you doing?"
"Trust me," Danny snapped as he continued to flick through the channels trying to find the right one.
He got to the channel that was supposed to be the concert but all it said, in big white block letters, was: Signal lost against a black screen. Goddamn it. What the hell was happening? Behind him everyone started groaning and Danny faltered. This was not going well.
Steve snatched the remote out of his hand. "You're out of your mind," he growled. He looked at the info to see what Danny was trying to show him and it came up as the Concert title. "Why would any of us want to watch Alex and the Doctors?"
"Yeah, specially since they're just Rowan's songs and we all know that she…." Jerry's voice cut out noticing that Steve had turned a dark glare back to him. "Sorry," he whispered and Steve went back to getting the game on the TV.
Danny couldn't let him not know, not when he had proof that Rowan was back on the island. He sent a text to Grace.
Facetime us. Now.
She obliged. Two seconds later. He answered the call and simply said: "Show Steve."
He handed his friend his phone and then watched as Grace turned her phone to the stage. There in the blurry picture both of them could make out that red-blonde hair-do. And even if he couldn't tell it was Rowan from the image the voice was enough.
Yeah, my receipts, be lookin' like phone numbers. If it ain't money, then wrong number. Black card is my business card, the way it be settin' the tone for me. I don't mean to brag, but I be like, put it in the bag, yeah. When you see them racks, they stacked up like my ass, yeah.
Well it wasn't her usual type of song, she had definitely evolved musically but even Steve knew that voice, Danny saw the recognition in Steve's stiffly set shoulders.
"It's supposed to be live. If they lost the TV signal guaranteed it's Wo Fat making sure you don't see it."
"She's at…"
"Neal S. Blaisdell Center, right now, yes."
Steve faltered for a moment. He looked back to the friends on his couch that were all staring at him as if he were crazy.
"Go Steven!" Chin cried. Which was followed by a resounding: "What the hell are you waiting for?" from Grover.
Steve looked up to Danny who was already tossing him the keys to the Camaro. "You want her back? Then we better get going."
And then, without another word, Steve turned tail and sprinted for the car with Danny chasing after him. Jerry called something about calling HPD for back up and Chin and Grover said they'd follow to help out. But Steve hadn't heard them, he was focused on getting to the Neal S. Blaisdell Center as soon as he could.
Steve cut that 22-minute car ride from his place to the Neal S. Blaisdell Center down to 12 and Danny didn't complain once. All that mattered was putting Steve in front of Rowan again. Anything to help his friend either get the girl back or get over her once and for all.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Shout out to my ex, you're really quite the man. You made my heart break and that made me who I am. Here's to my ex, hey, look at me now. Well, I, I'm all the way up, I swear you'll never bring me down.
Shout out to my ex, you're really quite the man. You made my heart break and that made me who I am. Here's to my ex, hey, look at me now. Well, I'm, I'm all the way up, I swear you'll never, you'll never bring me down.
Wo Fat stood at the side of that stage watching her belt out that song. Yes, he had heard her sing it in Colombia for her birthday but seeing it here, on that stage with the lights and the screaming fans… it was something else entirely. He was forced to admit that Conejo had come up with a pretty good idea, it had definitely put a smile back on Rowan's face.
Alex had come back into the wings, no doubt to call security, when she first showed up, but he caught sight of Wo Fat and actually came to a dead stop. Wo Fat smiled carefully in a way he knew was intimidating and that was the end of that. Rowan was allowed to sing her two songs and Alex had decided to be the bigger person and went out there to provide back up and make it seem like he was down for this interruption.
He had already paid the guy to make sure the live video feed failed for these two songs, then when they were done, Wo was going to take her back to Rainbow's café again for post-concert breakfast. It would be the second time he would be eating breakfast foods that day but it was for Rowan so he would be alright with it.
"It really doesn't make sense. Why didn't she want this? She could have had this. She's the singer here, not Lockman."
That was true, she was much better than him. But her explanation for not wanting this life was that she had something like this in her old world and she didn't like it. She liked her privacy and not being followed by camera crews. And with her new life there was a lot more to discover than back at in her home reality. That too, was true. The press would have a field day with how connected to Wo Fat she was.
She already suffered with Steven over their connection he wouldn't want her to suffer anymore on the front pages of every media service.
A sudden jolt of apprehension tingled up his spine and Wo Fat suddenly began to look over his shoulder. Why did he have the distinct feeling that something was coming, was sneaking up on him?
"What's wrong with you?" Conejo asked.
Wo Fat's eye twitched as the apprehension in his grew, knotting his shoulders tightly. He turned around completely at that point. "Something's wrong."
Luckily, he turned around when he did because he caught a glimpse of a shadow moving towards them, a shadow holding a gun. He didn't have to wonder about that. He knew who that was, he just didn't know how Steven could have possibly found out she was there, not when they had been so careful up until that point.
He nudged Conejo and pointed to the shadowy figure. Conejo nodded and gestured to another one. Great he hadn't come alone. That didn't bode well for him.
Steve burst out of the shadows with Danny in tow, they both had their guns drawn and were slowly approaching both Conejo and Wo Fat. Both men had their arms up in surrender but even as he was moving, Wo Fat could see that Steve's main focus was Rowan who was still on the stage.
They got close and Wo Fat could see that rabid energy that Conejo was talking about. The man was practically frothing at the mouth to get to Rowan. For a moment seething hatred was pinned onto Wo Fat but Steve said nothing to him.
"You got them, I'm gonna get her," he said tossing Danny his pair of cuffs. Wow, he was so fixated on Rowan he wasn't even going to handcuff Wo Fat himself? Fuck he really did have it bad.
"Yeah, you're not ruining her song," Wo Fat said and then before Steve could stop him, he had hooked an arm around Steve's and swung him back and down towards the ground. He kicked the gun out of Steven's hand as Conejo fairly attacked Danny.
Conejo had grabbed Danny's arm and swung it up so he could swing his other hand up and into Danny's chest. Once Danny was disarmed Conejo went about thoroughly beating him up. Wo Fat, however, was dealing with a Steven who wasn't playing fair. He kicked the legs out from under Wo Fat and got on top of him. They struggled with one another's arms before Wo Fat managed to flip him. He landed one hit to Wo Fat's jaw before Steven upper cut him to the ribs.
They were sparring, trading punches when a sudden little roar was heard and Rowan's tiny little body flew into Steve's with such force the two of them almost went flying. Steve went flying and hit the ground hard, the only reason Rowan didn't was because Wo Fat had had the good sense to grab her.
Conejo hit Danny with a spinning kick so hard the man went down besides Steve. Wo Fat put a hand out to drag Rowan back and she grabbed Conejo's arm to drag him with them. The plan was to run to the other side of the stage and get Rowan somewhere dark and safe for her to jump them to safety. But they got half way across the stage and saw the other two Five-0 men on the team in the wings waiting for them.
No go. What were they going to do now dive into the crowd? He glanced to the crowd and saw HPD filing up the isles. Nope that was a no go too.
"Rowan, Rowan, listen to me!" Steve said coming out from behind the wings, his arms outstretched as if trying to reach her. "He's lied to you Rowan."
Well how the hell did he know that. Wo Fat shot an accusatory glare at Conejo, certain he must have said something to tip Steven off.
"Really? There isn't a red flag on my file saying that the easiest way to arrest Wo Fat is to arrest me and use me as bait?" she shot back and Steve faltered. "You told people to arrests me, Steven. You're still arresting me when you don't get your way, you've just got other people doing it for you now. You got everything you wanted. The perfect woman, the perfect family. Why can't you just leave me alone!"
A little flare of her power went out with that last shrieking demand and above them he swore he saw two lights crack and then go dark. Damn this wasn't good. If they stayed there any longer and he'd be able to tell her the truth. That he wasn't married, that he didn't want her to leave, that he had come looking for her all those months ago.
"No Rowan, that's not… okay some of that is true… just… just…"
But Rowan was done listening to him. She looked all around them before settling at something at her feet.
"Hold onto me," Rowan said reaching out for both of her boys. Immediately they reached back. Once they had strong grips on one another, she opened her sense to the void. He knew it, because he felt it. He felt the way the world around them suddenly hummed to life, felt the static that crept up his fingers and into him.
Then suddenly, the part of the stage they were standing on dropped. Of course, she had them on the platform and she used her void powers to take out the controls and lower the platform. It was a good plan because it got them away from Steven, but it was a bad plan because they were now a groaning mess on the floor.
"We gotta get up," Wo Fat said as he disentangled himself from the limbs of his siblings. "Come on." He grabbed Rowan and yanked her up.
Beneath them Conejo, who had taken most of the brunt of the fall, groaned: "Warn us the next time Ro you take the ground out from under us."
"Come on Con, up," Wo Fat said stooping down to help him up. "He's gonna be…"
"ROWAN!"
"Jesus this man doesn't quit!" Conejo cried.
Wo Fat didn't have time for this. "Come on," he said again and together the three of them went running through the darkened underbelly of the stage. Just one room, that was all he needed it didn't even need to be that big.
Behind them Steve was following, his braying for Rowan getting louder. Rowan couldn't run in her red-bottomed heels but he knew that there was no way he'd convince her to leave another pair behind, nor did he want to. She mourned the loss of her red-bottomed heels like they were people.
"Crazy boyfriend gaining," Conejo said just as Wo Fat clocked a doorway. He threw the door open, both he and Conejo got inside but Rowan stopped in the doorway.
She took in Steve's charging form, hot on their heels and desperate to get to her, with Danny and his Five-0 friends close behind, and he felt the anger crackle around her. Oh no, she was gonna go full void.
"Enough!" she shouted and once again that orange shield that Wo Fat still wasn't used to seeing appeared in front of her. But with a shout of: "Go away!" that shield shot forward.
Steve barely had time to brace, but he did, arms crossed in front of his face like a shield as the barrier crashed into him. It took down Danny, the Asian Five-0 and the African-American Five-0 and threw them a couple of metres, but Steve… Steve was still standing.
The three of them stood there watching as Steve lowered his arms, glanced back to his fallen friends and then back to Rowan shock on his face. Which was exactly how Rowan, Conejo and Wo Fat were looking at him. Yeah, that had not been expected at all.
Conejo jerked out of it before the other two. He turned to Wo Fat and cried: "He can deflect her powers?"
Clearly, he could but this was not the time to worry about that. He quickly pulled Rowan into the darkened equipment room, slammed the door shut and then jammed it shut with a folded chair. The second he had it braced, the door shuddered against the weight of Steven's shoulder as he tried to break the door down.
Wo Fat grabbed Rowan's shoulders. "Ro, Ro, I need you to focus we need to go home. Send us back to the safe house."
Rowan looked back to the door that was shaking under Steve's wailing fists, where his voice continued to call out to her and declare that Wo Fat had lied.
"Rowan!" he said again to gain her attention. She turned her wide eyes back at him, she was clearly too panicked to focus, or Steve being there was messing with her powers. He was her off switch after all, maybe being too close to him was messing with her abilities.
He tightly gripped her shoulders, willing her to have the power to do this. "We need to get somewhere safe Rowan, or he's going to arrest us all."
And that was it, that was all she needed. Like his faith in her, and his frantic words gave her all she needed to open up that void.
By the time Steve finally got that door open the three of them were back in Spain and Rowan was making them pancakes.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Wo Fat was on his third pancake, Conejo on his sixth and Rowan on her second when she finally felt comfortable enough to say: "I told you the concert was a bad idea."
Then she immediately felt bad because it was Conejo's first idea on something they could do together and to be fair, she had been having fun to begin with. But all of that fun went away when she looked over to the side and found Steven and Wo Fat fighting. She knew that if Steven got the upper hand, which he usually did because Wo Fat was always under estimating him, Wo was either going to get arrested or Conejo would just pull a gun and shoot Steven.
She hadn't wanted either of those things to happen so she had intervened. Then… not only had Steven's presence messed with her ability to use her powers, but he had blocked them as well. Yes, her father had said that he would probably be able to do that, but she didn't think he actually would, not when he hated her powers and had no idea what to do with them.
"We were fine until McGarrett showed up," Conejo growled and Rowan nodded.
"Mmm, that's true. But I'm getting really sick of having to jump away in a panic."
"So we don't go to Hawaii anymore," Wo Fat said. "I've been saying it for months… but noo…"
"Hey! I didn't want to do the concert, I wanted to go to the Bahamas."
"Again, you were having fun until McGarrett showed up!" Conejo snapped pointing his syrup dripping knife at her.
Rowan sighed. "Yes, we've established that I was having fun. And yes, if Steve hadn't shown up none of us would have been complaining. But he did. And maybe you're right Con, maybe he is attracted to my powers…"
"But you weren't using them on stage," Conejo reminded her. "Mans just attracted to you. Wo's right we can't go back to Hawaii, every time we do, he finds you."
Rowan turned to Wo Fat who was busy setting up another pancake with fresh fruit and lots of syrup. "You know I was thinking… Steve kept saying you were lying… I wonder what he thought you were lying about."
Wo Fat stopped drowning his pancakes in syrup and turned a surprised look up to her, like he didn't think she'd ask that question. She couldn't help but stare at the plate in front of him, she thought he hated sweets, so why was there a massive puddle of syrup on his plate?
"How should I know?" Wo Fat growled. Rowan noted that he shot Conejo a warning glare and that was… strange. "The man's crazy. He'd say anything…"
"That's not really like him," Rowan said. "He must think you lied about something…"
"That's true, I lied to him about many things," Wo Fat said absently.
Rowan straightened. "Like what?"
"Well, when he told me that you and him were broken up and he didn't want you to come back, I refused to tell him what hospital you were in."
"What…. why?"
"Because he told me he didn't want you to come back home, Rowan."
"But what if he wanted to see me?"
"He was in Hawaii with no intention of leaving. No, what he wanted was a location on me so he could tell Interpol. You were really badly injured I didn't want you to wake up alone with that hospital without any knowledge that you and Steve had broken up. So yes, I lied to him about where you were and how you were doing to keep him away from me."
Wow… the attempts to use her to get Wo Fat arrested had started as early as that? She hadn't even been conscious and he was one hundred percent done with her. Why did that hurt so much? It had been a year why wasn't she over it yet?
The two boys were silent for a moment before Wo Fat said: "I'm sorry. I… I just… maybe it was the wrong decision, maybe he did want to come see you, maybe he wanted to end things in person. I just… very selfishly didn't want anything else to happen to you and…"
Rowan got up quickly and wrapped Wo Fat up in a hug. "It's not your fault," she whispered. And that was true too, Wo Fat wasn't good at making good emotional decisions like that. He was doing the best with what he knew.
She then reached out and pulled Conejo out of his chair and to her. He yelped in protest as he had been attempting to shove half a pancake in his mouth but he let her tug him to her side so he could hug him too.
"And thank you for coming up with the concert idea. I had a lot of fun."
But before the boys could mumble their you're welcomes to her, Rowan suddenly jerked. She was taken over, quite violently by a terrible bloody vision and the static electricity around her was so strong it almost dropped them both. They threw themselves away from her, but Rowan managed to stay upright, but their distance didn't last long.
"What the hell was that?" Conejo asked, a hand going to her, to where her side had been punctured by a bullet a month ago. Where her own hand was gripping tightly as if she had been shot again.
Rowan seemed to take it all in, a different reality running past her eyes. She looked at them both with eyes wide with fear.
"Steve's going to get shot."
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve paced through his house not quite believing what had happened but having no choice but to.
Rowan had powers. Rowan had actual fucking void powers that she knew how to use properly and could use properly. Without him feeling it.
Danny watched him as he paced and Steve knew, he just knew his friend was waiting to hit him with the I told you so. Yes, yes, Danny had warned him but… come on… if she had powers that he couldn't feel it meant that Rowan could jump at will which meant he couldn't trace her. Hell, if she had them that strongly under control she could have gone home.
In fact, why hadn't she gone home? He had three theories.
1. She wasn't actually strong enough to jump that far yet.
2. Wo Fat wasn't letting her leave. (if that were the case, good on him)
3. Rowan didn't want to leave. (And if that was the case that meant that maybe… she still wanted to come home… to him)
Danny let Steve have one more lap of the living room before he said: "Okay are you done decompressing? Can we talk about it now?"
"About what? About Rowan having powers or the fact that she had no problem using them against me?"
That too had been a surprise. To see that translucent orange shield form in front of her, clearly made of that same orange current that had always made up the electric bolts that had escaped from her, had stopped him in his tracks. When she sent it barrelling towards him, all Steve could think to do was to raise his hands in defence.
That shield hadn't quite gone through him, he felt it hit him, but it also felt like it had been deflected maybe by an opposing power he wasn't quite certain had come from him or not. His friends, however, had been taken off their feet by it.
Rowan had never attacked anyone with her powers before… or at least, not him. She had always been able to take her electric energy and put it into her hands so she could shock an unsuspecting victim but this was something different.
"Both," Danny said after a moment's pause.
"What do you want me to say Danny?"
"Well… did you feel her…"
"No, Danny, I did not feel that."
They had gone through all the people who had come through customs in the past week, there was still nothing. But seeing as Rowan, Wo Fat and that bodyguard of hers had disappeared out of that small equipment room with no windows or secret entrances, Steve had to assume she had opened a portal to get them out of there. Which meant she had probably opened up a portal to get herself to the island in the first place.
The question was, how long of a range did she have with her portals? Was she still on Hawaii or had she opened up a door to anywhere in the world?
"God this is a disaster," Steve said going back to pacing. "How the hell am I going to find her now? Huh?"
Danny didn't have an answer for him. "Well… as I mentioned before when she took out half a Chinatown street… Wo Fat and her bodyguard had gear. If they had gear that means they went to someone who knows about this void stuff…"
"Her father. You think he'd take her to her father?"
"Well I think, if he suddenly became aware of Rowan's powers, he'd want answers. Much like you did. Except you deported the only people with the answers before thinking to question them."
"Okay… yeah… maybe he just… stole stuff from her dad's lab," Steve offered. It wasn't like he could do the same, he couldn't even call Trenton Pierce and ask for help. He may not have seen the man in a few years but something told him that after having the man deported, they weren't on good terms.
"So we should call…"
"Yeah not a good idea. How do I even explain what happened?"
"You just think he won't talk to you," Danny muttered and Steve sighed because it was true. "Fine, if you don't want to call her dad maybe you should try… talking to the void…"
"Excuse me?"
"You heard me. You blocked that attack she turned onto us. You've always been able to feel it when she was in trouble or if she used the void. And you spent a whole month and a half grounding her to this world… you obviously have some sort of pull on the void, maybe you could harness it."
"I grounded her to this reality," Steve echoed. "That must be why Wo Fat needed me and her separated. She must not be able to jump when I'm around."
"Okay yeah that's a good theory…"
"So, all I have to do is get a hold of her. Once I'm holding on, she won't be able to jump."
"Yeah but you gotta find her first," Danny reminded him and Steve sighed because once again he was back at square one. He still had no idea where they were, but at least he knew how Rowan was travelling when everyone thought she was in Colombia. Or why Wo Fat was thought to be behind several terrorists acts but they had proof of him somewhere else at the time. He was using Rowan's powers to commit his crimes.
But even though he knew Wo Fat was lying to Rowan about something, even though he knew she probably didn't know the truth, knowing that she didn't want to come home to him, that she was mad enough to use her powers against him hurt. And that song she had been singing when he entered the concert. That had very much been about him. About how he had broken her heart and she deserved better than him. How she was better off. Even if she had the wrong information it hurt to hear those words. He didn't want to be the only person fighting him for that relationship.
"Maybe… maybe I shouldn't," Steve whispered. "Maybe I should just leave her alone."
Danny balked at that. "Why? Why because she told you to! You told me that the man who came into this house thought that you were married, which means that's probably what Rowan thinks! That's probably why she's so mad at you…"
Steve shook his head. "No, I can't… I can't go through that again. Finding her just to have her rip out my heart again…"
"You never found her in the first place!" Danny cried clearly exasperated.
"Let it go Danny. I'm over it. I'm over her."
"That is a lie!" Danny thundered and though it was true Steve didn't need to hear it. "You are so in love with that girl it's disgusting. You think I don't notice you looking at pictures of you two on your phone?"
"Just cause her pictures are still on my phone doesn't mean I still love her, Danny. It doesn't even mean I wanted her back."
"Steven, come on, don't be ridiculous. You go insane every time you see her, I'm not stupid, I know you're not over her, you don't have to lie to me."
"What do you want me to say Danny?" Steve thundered. "What? That I'd get on my knees and beg her to come back? That I'd do anything to hear her voice again, to hear her say my name or that she was mine?"
"Yes!"
"Well I can't Danny, because it hurts. And it's not going to happen and… Danny… I just want to stop hurting. Okay? I just want it all to stop."
Danny fell quiet and so did Steve. After a moment Danny said: "Alright. I'll stop bringing it up. I'm sorry. I just… I just wanted you to be happy."
"No, I know… sorry for snapping at you."
Danny just nodded and Steve finally sat down in his arm chair. He may have convinced Danny now he just had to convince himself.
