Don't forget to leave a review and I'll see you guys on Monday. (Also, welcome back AJ I missed you!)
Chapter 285
Nahele had come into his office, crying. He had been chased the whole way there by the security guard because he had rushed through without stopping, but Steve only had to glare at the man chasing him for him to back off.
Nahele had found his friend, Makaio, in the boy's locker room at school, dead of a meth overdose. The same stuff that had been killing the meth-heads was now killing kids. He had been crying, he was upset and he wanted Steve. Not Kong Liang or Brandi, or Rowan. He wanted Steve. So, Steve had sat with him, let him cry it out, and then he promised Nahele that he would find who did this and bring him justice. Those sons of bitches selling that stuff were screwed cause now Steve was pissed.
They raided crack houses looking for people using that shit, found a person who was using and got the dealer, Michael. Who had been selling drugs through an app which was both genius and risky and something he blamed Wo Fat for.
He created the first Criminal application and now all the others were doing it too.
But they knew that they weren't making this meth on the island, that meant it was coming in from somewhere and after intimidating Michael they found the pilot. A pilot at a flight school, a man named Francis.
He was picking it up, three times a week from the Green Island Atoll and then bringing it back. The only guy that Francis dealt with was Dae Won, he was probably the seller who would lead him to the maker.
The plan was Steve was going to take the pilot's place. Francis was going to tell Dae Won that he couldn't make the next run and he was going to recommend the replacement… which would be Steve, of course. When Francis complained that he would need a damn good reason otherwise Dae Won would know something's up. So, Steve broke his arm.
There now he didn't have to lie. He really couldn't fly.
And that was how Steve and Danny ended up undercover in an airplane hanger. Jerry had created fake back stories and IDs for the two of them, they just had to hope that they passed Dae Won's tests.
Francis, their now injured pilot, showed up with Dae Won in tow just when he said he would. Steve and Danny had been busy pretending to fix a plane. Or at least, Danny was, Steve marginally knew what he was doing. Francis called him over and the introductions started.
"Hey how you doing? I'm Evan Raintree" Steve said to him. He was sweaty, he was covered in axel grease and oil and he was fighting the urge to deck this guy. He caught where Dae Won was looking. "And that's David Carson, my mechanic."
He didn't even have to look to know that Danny was waving at him.
"I just need a pilot."
Steve turned to Francis. "What, did you not talk to this guy?"
"Talk to me about what?" Dae Won asked.
"That's my mechanic," Steve said as if that answered the question. "I don't fly without my mechanic. We're a package deal."
Dae Won nodded. "If you want this job, you'll make an exception."
Steve nodded. "Alright, then I don't want the job. You're not gonna waste my time, mate."
And then he walked away. He could feel the angry shock rolling off of Dae Won but he wasn't budging on this and if he wanted to play hard to get Steve could just pull out his gun and shoot him.
"Alright, wait, wait, wait," Dae Won said quickly. "Francis knows you, I don't. But if you check out, the both of you, job's yours."
Dae Won was bringing out a finger print scanner. "Oh, I told you. They're clean," Francis said quickly no doubt getting nervous.
"Is this gonna be a problem?" Dae Won asked, immediately suspicious. "Running your prints, I mean?"
Steve too was nervous about this because there was a chance whatever Jerry did might not work, but he wasn't going to show that right now. "No, it's not gonna be a problem."
He took both Steve and Danny's prints and then right then and there he looked them up in front of them. Steve thought they'd have some time, but no, nope he was doing it right there.
Son of a bitch.
There was a tense couple of minutes between the four of them as Dae Won fiddled with that computer and they all just stood there waiting.
He looked at something in front of him and then said: "Oh you know Wo Fat? Why didn't you lead with that?"
What? What the… why the hell did Jerry put that in there? Both Steve and Danny exchanged panicked glances because what the hell were they supposed to say to that?
"Yeah… we… long time back," Steve started and that was the wrong thing to say because now they were getting narrowed looks from him.
Dae Won nodded. "Let's just call him and see what he says."
Whoa, wait… he could… he could contact Wo Fat? This man had a number to Wo Fat? Steve watched maybe a little too avidly as he pulled out his phone and made a big show of calling Wo Fat on speaker.
After three rings he got: "Fat."
And just like that the avid interest turned into fear. Aw fuck, he was screwed. There was no way Wo Fat was gonna vouch for him. They were as good as dead and he was no where near his gun.
"Hey Mr. Fat, it's Dae Won."
"Who?"
Wow. Just… wow. Did he just not know everyone who was working for him? Dae Won colored a bit and cleared his throat. "I'm in charge of the Green Atoll to Hawaii route."
"Oh you. What do you want now?" Wo Fat asked with a weary sigh. He didn't sound like himself, he sounded like a patronizing father.
"My pilot got injured. He has a substitute here, guy's background claims he's run for you before."
"Yeah? What's his name?"
"Evan Raintree."
There was a thick pause and Steve knew he was screwed. "Who?" Wo Fat asked. "I think I would remember working with someone with an idiotic name like Raintree…"
"Wait… wait… Raintree?" Steve went a little straighter, that voice in the background… that sounded like… Rowan.
"One second," Wo Fat said and then a little muffled they heard him say: "Yeah, I said Raintree, why?"
There was a sudden scuffle and a cry of what might have been pain and then Rowan was on the phone
"You're calling about an Evan Raintree, right?" Dae Won looked starstruck from almost five seconds. He paused so long that she actually had to say hello? a few times to get him to talk to her again. When he told her that he was calling about an Evan Raintree and she immediately started talking again. "The pilot? Right? Weird attachment to his mechanic, one would say a little too closely attached?" The guy affirmed again. "Like the hot one, right? Is he all sweaty? I love it when he wears his coveralls half way and he's got the white tank top and he's all sweaty and oily…"
Steve was frozen in spot because Rowan had managed to describe what he was wearing that day perfectly. He started to look around for hidden cameras, though he had a feeling he knew how she knew this was all going down at that moment.
"Look can you vouch for him or not?" the guy cried.
"Oh, yeah, I can vouch for him. He's great! He flew a whole ass plane across an ocean with me on his lap. Guy's a pro. Wo's just salty cause I slept with him."
And in the background, they heard Wo Fat's confused exclamation of: "When the hell did you sleep with a pilot?"
"Okay thanks."
"No problem. Oh hey. I want him back in once piece… do you hear me?"
There was a dangerous edge to her voice, like maybe… she thought something was going to happen. He knew she was still having visions, clearly because she knew his alias and was gratefully vouching for him, and he longed to ask her what she saw but that would have given him away so he was forced to let that man hang up the phone.
But hey, after this he would have a real connection to Wo Fat, someone who could get him in touch with Rowan again. Maybe if he went by Evan Raintree again, she'd pick up the phone and he could talk to her himself.
Dae Won hung up the phone, looked Steve up and down who just shrugged and said: "He did try to kill me."
"Well if you slept with his sister, I'm not surprised," Dae Won said.
"He said if I came near him again, he'd finish the job but uh… I'm sure he wouldn't mind me taking this one so long as I'm no where near the girl right?"
Dae Won looked him up and down and simply said: "I'll be in touch."
The three men left watched as Dae Won walked away. "Well, that went well," Danny said quickly. But Steve wasn't so sure.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
A few days went by and Rowan was on pins and needles. She could feel it, could feel the black streaking through the red strings that surrounded her. All of them warning her that Steve was in major trouble.
Maybe she shouldn't have vouched for him. Maybe she shouldn't have made Wo Fat vouch for him too when that man called back. Maybe she should have stopped it when she had the chance. Maybe she should just have called Steve and told him that she saw him getting shot in an airplane and dying.
But then she remembered how she attacked him at the concert and figured he wouldn't be too happy with her. So she didn't.
But the strings were practically vibrating with warning. She hadn't managed to sleep at night she was alive with electric nervousness and it had kept her from getting a good night's sleep. She hadn't wanted to talk to either of her boys about this either because neither of them understood.
Why would she want to save him? Steven, of all people. The man didn't love her, he she still loved him but that didn't change what he had done to them, to her. And she felt pathetic for being worried but she couldn't help it, just like she couldn't turn off how she felt for Steven.
Rowan had put on her red-haired wig that afternoon because she didn't know what she was going to do. Was she going to go save him? Was she going to let him die? She didn't know and sitting there with the red wig on, did not help her figure out what she was going to do.
She did, however, get discovered by Conejo, who took in her wide-eyed surprised look with the red wig on and he just grabbed her and dragged her into Wo Fat's office.
He threw Rowan down into the chair, and then just pointed at her. For a second Wo Fat stared at her and then he turned his eyes to Conejo. "I feel like I'm supposed to understand but unfortunately I do not."
"She's wearing the wig, Wo. Look at her!"
She should have taken it off but she still couldn't bring herself to do it.
Wo Fat looked at her again as if he had forgotten that her hair wasn't red anymore. How could he have forgotten what her hair looked like? He narrowed his eyes at the wig and then sighed. "Really Ro?"
"She was gonna go help McGarrett!" Conejo accused and Rowan gasped.
"I was not! I was just… thinking about it."
"That is worse!" Conejo thundered and Wo Fat put a hand up.
"Alright, look. I get it. I get that you're worried he's going to die. But McGarrett never dies. I've been trying for years. Just when I think I've got him he gets out of it. So my dear, I get that you're worried, and I'm sure your strings are giving you great cause for that, but I don't think either of us are lucky enough to get rid of Steven McGarrett that easily."
Rowan sighed, well that was true. "That… that's what you're going to say to her?" Conejo thundered. "How about, she shouldn't fucking care? Huh? That man doesn't deserve her saving! Just like you shouldn't have vouched for him! Why did you let her talk you into do it?"
They were no longer paying attention to her and Rowan sat back in the chair with another huff. They were right. Steve hadn't done anything this past year except get her arrested multiple times. He had married Catherine, and just recently, according to Wo Fat, they had adopted Nahele together. The bastards! Now it was going to be extra hard to steal her kid back from those… interlopers.
So why should she save him? Would he do the same for her? Probably not… unless he thought it would bag him Wo Fat in the end.
"You're right!" Rowan said shooting to her feet. "He doesn't deserve my caring or my saving!"
Both boys, both leaning into Wo Fat's desk to yell at each other, paused and turned to look at her. Wo Fat appraised her with narrowed eyes but Conejo smiled. "Really?"
"Yeah!" she shouted. "So, he dies? Who cares, it means we can finally go back to Hawaii and not worry about getting arrested."
"Well I mean that's not entirely true but yes, I wouldn't have to worry about him anymore and that would be a great weight lifted off of our travel burdens," Wo Fat concluded. "But are you sure you're okay with that?"
She wasn't in the least but her brothers had a point. She couldn't let Steven and his cases dictate what she did anymore. She opened her mouth to tell them just that when a jolt ran through her and she crumpled against the pain. It felt like she had gotten shot all over again in the same spot as before.
She had changed her strings once, but this… this was a phantom pain. Was Steven destined to get shot in the same place because she had changed her strings.
"Rowan?" Wo Fat asked. "What is it?"
"It's happened," she whispered and a familiar pain snuck into her shoulder blades. "Oh no," she said softly but even though both boys lurched for her, the red strings took a hold of Rowan, even when she didn't want to go, and ripped her into the void. Fairly dragging her through the darkness to where the man she still loved more than anything else was practically screaming for her.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
They got the call to fly for Dae Won a few days after they gave him their fingerprints. He had run their ID a few more times and put out some chatter on the dark web, but so far, their fake IDs had held up. Even though Danny had no faith in Jerry and had gotten his will in order cause he was certain Jerry was going to get them killed, Steve had had faith in him. And it had worked out.
He had even told Steven why he put Wo Fat in their background, and that was because he figured Wo Fat, and Rowan's app would keep them safe. Danny said what he should have done was name Rowan but it was too late for that now.
So, Steve and Danny met Dae Won at the same airplane hanger where he had put on the persona of Evan Raintree, and flew out to the Green Island Atoll for the cargo. He patiently waited as Dae Won loaded it up. Steve was proud of himself. He felt very much like a badass pilot in his light blue button down and his aviator glasses, sitting in that pilot seat feeling very much in control. Damn if Rowan could see him now, she would 100% be in his lap.
"Tell me, Raintree, when you were flying those commercial buses, how many times you fall asleep on the job, huh?" Dae Won asked
Steve shook his head but knew he had to play his part. "You give a man a hot meal, a comfy chair and auto pilot, I defy anyone not to take a nap."
He felt Dae Won smile. "Man, I knew it!"
Dear god this guy was an idiot. And to think he was nervous about him to begin with. "Yeah, I like flying, buddy. That's why I like this. Less sleeping, more piloting. I don't miss the heavies."
"Except the flight attendants," Danny added.
"Yeah, I miss them," Steve said but now he was just thinking about Rowan as a flight attendant. He glanced back to Dae Won he wanted to ask about Wo Fat and how he had a contact to him, but he had a feeling that it was Wo Fat who was in charge of this run.
"So… Wo Fat your boss?" Dae Won was now staring at him while Danny was glaring at him. "I'm just asking, cause we all thought he was out of commission."
"He's in charge of the route, but I get to decide what goes on it. He doesn't really care much so long I hand him the cash," he said with a sniff. "But uh… he mostly works from home, comes to check up time to time. Always a surprise. I never know when he's coming."
Yeah because of Rowan and her goddamn powers.
"You uh… you really got it on with that sister of his and lived to tell the tale?" he asked heading down a road that might get him punched.
Steve had to struggle to get himself under control before he nodded. "Yeah, spent the whole flight in my lap. Showed her the sights and then took her round the world if you know what I mean."
He felt slimy just saying it, but he couldn't break cover now.
"I haven't met her yet. He's very selective about who gets to see her. I figure cause I'm in Hawaii I'll never meet her, cause he refuses to come back here…"
"You just said he stops by…"
"Well he stopped in a week ago, but that was the first I saw him…"
A week a go was the concert. That was the last time he and Rowan had been in Hawaii. Well, it was good to know that they hadn't been back since… maybe.
"Hey, is she as hot as everyone says she is?"
Yeah, he was gonna get hit. Luckily Steve didn't have to answer, their independent radar was beeping. Danny glanced up to him. "We got a bogey at 8 o'clock."
They all turned to look out the little windows of his little plane and there it was a helicopter coming up on them. That was not good.
"Yeah I got him."
"DEA?" Dae Won asked.
Steve kept the plane level as the helicopter pulled up beside him. "I don't know. No markings."
But that wasn't a good thing and he could hear Rowan's parting words: I better get him back in one piece. What did she know that he didn't? Why didn't she give him more of a hint?
"Take her down just in case we have to dump," Dae Won ordered as he moved to the back to put a tracker on his meth.
Steve took off his glasses to get a better look into the helicopter, like that might make the glare glinting off it's windows better. And as soon as he did a door opened and a man with a giant machine gun aimed at him and their plane was revealed. Both he and Danny only had time to scream: "Down," at one another before he opened fire.
The bullets didn't just rip through the plane, even though he was crouched as far as he could go he felt the bullet rip through his side, doing a lot more damage then he knew was good for him.
"Buddy, buddy," he heard Danny say as he pulled him up and out of his crumpled position. Already the pain was taking over and all around him the world was going black. That wasn't good and Danny's: "Oh no. Buddy!" that followed his discovery of Steve's injury confirmed that.
All he could think of was Rowan. He just wanted Rowan, to see her one last time. So, for the first time since he lost her he sat back, though of the void and the red strings and screamed into that darkness for Rowan.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
"Mayday Mayday," Danny said into the radio. He was attempting to fly this plane without knowing what he was doing. Steve was just lying there beside him and it wasn't looking good. "I'm in a Cessna aircraft en route to Oahu and I have a serious, serious problem. Repeat. Mayday. Mayday. Our pilot has been shot and I request immediate assistance."
He went back to trying to fly and got a response from the ground.
This is Honolulu International Control. We read you. Go a head.
He didn't really want to do this but Steve was dying and he didn't have a choice. "This is Detective Danny Williams with the Five-0 task force. I need help landing this plane."
"You're a cop?" Dae Won asked clearly surprised by their betrayal. He went for his gun and Danny went for his, letting go of the controls. Now the plane was dipping, Steve was groaned and Danny was starting to panic.
"Put the gun down," he ordered.
"Put yours down," Dae Won shot back.
Danny shook his head and repeated his order, but the plane kept dipping and Steve was just groaning: "Shoot him, Danny, shoot him."
Mayday request. Switch to channel 1 for immediate assistance.
And now the air traffic people were talking to him. Goddamn it he didn't have time for this.
"Don't you answer that!"
"If I don't, we're going to die."
He stared at Danny a moment and then said: "Wo Fat vouched for you."
"No, Rowan vouched for us. We're very close personal friends of hers and she vouched for us. Remember, she said she wanted him back in one piece," he said gesturing to Steve who was now mumbling something about Rowan. "You wanna be the one to tell them that he died? You want her to think he died cause of you?"
Dae Won just sat there staring at him. "Look, we're both gonna die, either we shoot each other or the plane goes down and we both die," he snapped. Air traffic control was yapping in his ear asking if he was copying. The wind was whistling, Steve was groaning that they needed to land. And Dae Won just sat their clearly struck dumb by all the confessions.
"Alright, you know what? You win. You win," Danny said putting his gun down. He turned to take the control again. "You wanna shoot me, shoot me, but then who's gonna fly this plane?"
"Well apparently you can't fly this plane either."
"True, but the people on the other end can You wanna shoot me? Sit on my lap. Be my guest. Do it, alright? But then you're gonna have to tell Rowan Pierce what happened here. And you can lie all you want but she always knows the truth. She'll know what you did and then that brother of hers is gonna come for a real visit. Is that what you want?"
No clearly it was not because Dae Won finally lowered the gun. That should have made Danny feel better, and it did, except he was still in a plane he couldn't fly and Steve was still fucking shot.
Danny glanced to Steve and slapped his shoulder. "Stay awake, buddy, stay awake." He grabbed the radio again and said: "Switching to channel 17."
He switched to channel 17 and as he did he continued to talk to Steven. "You're gonna be alright buddy, just hang in there."
"I'm dying Danny."
Oh fuck him. No. No. This was not happening. Danny was the pessimistic one not him. "No you are not! Just hang in there. You're gonna be alright, alright?"
God he couldn't have this happen on his watch, he just couldn't. Steve was supposed to get him killed not the other way around.
"Again, this is detective Danny Williams. I am in a Cessna aircraft. I'm headed your way. My pilot, my colleague has been shot. He's got multiple gunshot wounds. I need EMT standing by right when we get this thing on the ground, which I have no clue, zero clue how to do. Over."
Copy that, detective. Approach is good. We just need to slow you down.
"Okay. Alright. Slow us down. How do I do that?"
Between you and the pilot are three pull-levers. The furthest to your left is your throttle. Push it down to 25 percent.
Before going back to the radio he said shook Steve again. Steve wasn't doing well. Danny knew he wasn't doing well. But: I'm finished never should have come out of his friend's mouth.
Danny was running out of time. He lunged for the radio again. "Okay. Done."
Good, good. Now keep both hands on the control. Check your level. Dead center to the pilot. Make sure you don't dip below the horizon line. And keep your compass heading between north and the number 3.
"Okay. North and number 3, got that."
He shook Steve again but he did not respond. Danny looked down to the floor of the plane were a veritable lake of Steve's blood was pooling.
"Oh no. no. no. Steve. Alright, Alright, you. I need you to do something for me."
"Focus on getting the plane down," Dae Won interrupted and Danny nearly punched him in his stupid little face.
"Do not talk to me! Do what I tell you, or I'm gonna drop this thing in the water. You understand?"
"What do you want me to do?" Dae Won asked.
Danny cleared his throat cause he was dangerously close to crying right now. "I want you to put a hand on his neck and tell me if you feel a pulse, okay?"
Dae Won poked him a bit before he said: "I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know? Keep your hand on his neck. Either you feel a pulse or you don't."
He was at it for two seconds before an alarm started to blare. Just his fucking luck.
Danny picked up the radio again. "Control. I got an alarm and I don't know what it is."
Check your gauges. What do you see?
Danny looked around. "What do I see? I see a lot of gauges!"
What's your air speed?
"Uh… air speed is 155."
What about Altitude?
"Altitude's about 500 but falling."
Fuel?
Fuel which one was fuel? Good god if he was running out of fuel he was going to slap someone. "Fuel. No good." Of course it had to be fuel. "The needle's right at zero."
Alright. You're running out of fuel. Yeah no fucking shit. They must have nicked the fuel tank when they were shooting at him. We need to get you down as soon as possible.
"Yeah. Well, that's fine, fine with me."
The Coast Guard has been notified. Stand by for Emergency ditch procedure.
"Whoa, whoa, what does he mean by ditch?" Dae Won asked and that was a fair question.
"I don't know." Danny quickly pulled up the radio again. "What do you mean by ditch?"
Detective, based on your current altitude, air speed and available fuel, you're never gonna make the runway.
Well that wasn't good. "What are we going to do?" Dae Won asked when Danny didn't talk right away. "He said we have to ditch."
"Yeah, well, we're not ditching," he growled and then watched as one of the propellers stopped twirling. Aw come on, he just wanted a break. That's all. Just a break. "Control, we just…" and then the second engine went. "We just lost both of our engines."
Alright, detective, beneath the dash is a large red handle. Pull it to feather your prop.
For the love of god what did that even mean?
But don't try to fight gravity.
Danny did as he was told and then waited a second. "Large red handle, do not fight gravity. Copy that. Got that."
Okay, detective, next to the radio controls are your landing gear settings. There's a switch labeled "up water." Flip it. Lower your flaps one more peg to the landing position.
"Okay. Done."
Now you're gonna have to put her down on the water. Adjust your course to 175 degrees and let yourself glide.
Danny glanced back to Steve and nudged him a bit but got no response. "Uh… alright. Uh… control. That's not gonna work okay? My Partner, he's unconscious. If I put this thing down in the water, I'm not gonna be able to get him out of the plane, and he's gonna drown."
You don't have a choice, detective.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got a choice. I'm gonna put this thing down on the beach, okay?"
Detective, we strongly advice against that. I understand your concern for your friend, but consider yourself. Your best chance of survival is a water landing.
"Listen, I'm not going to put it down in the water. I'm putting this thing down on the beach. Clear the beach, I'm coming in."
Oh dear god he was going to pull a Steve. He stopped holding onto the controls simply to buckle Steve in so that when they hit the ground he wouldn't go flying.
"Hey, Steve, I know you've never been any good at listening to me, but now you've got not choice. You stubborn son of a bitch, do not die," he got nothing out of him and shook him. "Hey, listen to me. Do not die, okay? I'm not landing this thing for you to die on me. You understand? Huh? Good. Good."
He turned back to the controls he barely understood and the beach that was creeping closer and closer.
"Don't leave me." Oh my god he was awake. Dear god Steve was awake again it was a miracle.
But what the hell was Steven talking about? Where did that come from? Danny put a hand out to his friend's side. "I'm not leaving you, I'm right here," he told him.
There was a beat of silence before Steve whispered: "I love you."
"I love you too," Danny answered automatically.
"I… I need you… please… I wanna… see you… one last time…"
It was then that Danny realized that Steve wasn't talking to him. He was talking to some one else. He glanced over just as there was a sudden pop, accompanied with the electric hissing as everything on the dash went dead.
SON OF A BITCH!
Danny turned and Rowan and her other worldly shit was sitting on Steve. Or well… the two of them seemed to be flying, hovering in the air. Steve's hands were on her hips, for the first time since getting shot the man was alert. Rowan's red-blonde hair was swirling around like she was underwater, Steve's blood was no longer liquid but thin strings of red floating around them and tangling them up. One of her hands was resting over his heart, the other was pressed to his wounded side.
"What the fuck!" Dae Won screamed but Danny didn't have time to worry about that.
"Don't leave me," Steve was whispering. "I love you. Please stay with me."
Well shit, he could use this to his advantage. "Rowan!" he called but the girl didn't move or acknowledge him. "ROWAN!" he shouted hitting her that time.
He found when he made contact he got shocked with an electric blast so hard he felt he might have actually been electrocuted, and Rowan felt cold to touch, in fact, he was certain he got frost bite on his fingers from simply touching her. However, it got her to turn to him.
Her eyes were glowing white in her skull. Danny just stared at her for a moment, not sure what he was seeing just that it wasn't her eyes looking back at him.
"The plane's going down, your little void trick took out my controls!" he snapped to her. "I need help, I can't land this anymore. I need you to help me. I need you to help Steve."
Rowan turned slowly back to Steve who was still baring his heart to the girl as if she were paying attention when she wasn't. She turned again this time looking behind her to the stretch of sand that was slowly creeping up towards them. He meant using one of her portal things to get them out of the plane and straight to a hospital but, apparently, she didn't think of it that way.
She said nothing. She pressed her lips to Steve's, letting the red strings cover them, smother them then, as quickly as she appeared, she was gone. The strings vanishing completely and with Rowan gone Steve dropped back into his seat, no longer alert, that time despite, Danny shaking him and trying to keep him up when Steve closed his eyes he didn't open them again.
Danny was screwed. The plane's controls were gone. The radio was cut. But out on the horizon, on the beach he said he was going to land on, he swore he saw a speck of bright red. And that was what he was aiming for.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
They cleared a stretch of beach from Waikiki to Kuhio Beach. They got everyone off except for emergency personnel who would be needed to help Steven. It was rare that their fearless leader was the one in mortal danger, and this was about as dangerous as it could get.
They had lost communication with Danny and no one could tell them why, though they could see the plane making it's decent towards them, they could tell that it was way too low.
"He's gonna hit the water," Chin said watching as the plane got lower and lower. This wasn't good. If Danny hit the water they were all going to die.
Kono glanced out to the beach again just a murmur ran up through the people still there watching. She squinted out into the distance trying to be certain about what she was seeing.
"Is that…" she asked pointing.
Despite clearing the beach despite and everyone else taking for cover. There was, in fact, one person left on the beach and they'd know Rowan anywhere. She stood there, staring at the incoming plane, the plane that was angling more and more downward by the second, the plane that held Steve in it. Steve, who needed immediately medical attention, who was dying. They stood there, watching her, afraid to move, not sure how she had got there, not sure if she was really there.
Rowan was standing just by the water's edge. She seemed to just take in the plane before she lifted her hands, stretching them out in front of her, she slowly and carefully set herself into the sand. Though they couldn't see it, they could tell Rowan had a hold of something in her hand and suddenly, from the ground came these bolts of orange electric that traveled up Rowan's body to her hands. Turning the sand around her into jagged spikes of glass.
She pulled, she pulled as if she were attempting to pull something much heavier than her. She pulled just as the nose of the plane hit the water, a full 100 yards from the beach. And as she pulled there was a pop and the plane suddenly appeared sliding through the sand, coming to jerking stop.
They all rushed forward to get to Danny and Steve. They needed to get him out of the plane and when they got to him they could all see just how bad the injury was. Steven McGarrett was definitely dying.
They all rushed him to the hospital, and though Kono told Duke to look, no one could find Rowan.
