Chapter 286

Danny had gone with Steve in the ambulance, everyone else following on Grover's SUV. Steve was taken to the Tripler Army Medical center and even though Danny had busted ribs and he was in pain, he didn't want anyone to treat him yet. They took him straight to surgery, EMTs said he lost a lot of blood but everyone kept reassuring him that Steve was tough as nails and he was going to come out okay.

He didn't tell them that they had Rowan in the plane. He didn't tell that the EMTs said that the bullets should have been lodged in his wounds but none were there. He didn't tell them that was probably Rowan though he wasn't sure if it helped Steve yet like it had helped Chin.

But Danny couldn't stay still and wait for news. He was angry and he wanted to get the people who did this. So that's what he did.

The problem was, as always, they were one step behind. Because by the time they got to the location of a secondary dealer. The place was already on fire. The attack helicopter they had used to gun down their plane had already exploded and the product was up in smoke. All that was left was carnage and dead bodies.

And through it all one man came hobbling through. "Don't let him kill me. Don't let him kill me!"

But Danny recognized this one guy. He was the guy from the helicopter, the one with the gun. So even though this man was injured and unarmed, Danny didn't lower his gun, in fact he shot the other leg out from under him and then just stood over him his gun to his head.

All around him the others were shouting at him to stop, but all Danny could remember was Steve lying there, telling Danny he was dying, that he was finished. That wasn't fair and he wanted to kill the guy who had done this to Steve. But killing him wouldn't save Steve, and it wouldn't make things better.

So eventually he lowered his gun. "Hey Danny look," Kono said nudging him and when he looked up, they could see exactly who it was that this man had been running from.

Wo Fat stood there, SMG hanging at his side, in a three-piece suit minus the blazer jacket. His white dress shirt sleeves rolled up his forearms. He was just standing there, right in front of the on-fire helicopter. Damn didn't this man have enough of fire and helicopters?

They should have been afraid. He obviously wasn't alone, he couldn't have done all of this alone, but Danny was done being afraid. And he was done with Wo Fat's bullshit.

"You son of a bitch, where is she?" Danny thundered heading towards Wo Fat. For a second the man faltered. He clearly wasn't expecting Danny to turn on him. Like for a second, he forgot they weren't on the same side, but he got over his initial shock quite easily. Wo Fat merely moved away, heading down the building and away.

"No. You don't get to run away you son of a bitch. He needs her, now give her back!"

Danny rounded the corner but Wo Fat was gone, no doubt into another one of Rowan's portals. Son of a bitch. He could have really used Rowan right now, because he was certain Steve could have been at the pearl gates ready to go in and he would turn and come straight back if he heard Rowan talking to him on his death bed. Now he had nothing and would have to hope that Steve could get through this on his own.

His phone rang and he picked it up. The hospital had news about Steve and just judging by the tone it wasn't going to be good. God. He just wanted this day to be over. He wanted his friend to live. Then he wanted to go home so he could come back to the hospital feeling better and he could tell Steve that his plan was stupid and they should have listened to Danny from the beginning.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

They all rushed back to the hospital with Danny at the lead. While they were in the SUV on the way back to the hospital, they all changed out of their battle gear, leaving their weapons and their Kevlar vests behind.

Kono let Danny take the lead because she had a feeling it was making him feel better and they were all really worried about how Danny was going to take this news. Whether it be good or bad.

So, when they saw the doctor round the corner they were only marginally surprised when the injured Danny practically jogged towards him and hit him with a very aggressive: "Hey, doc. What's going on?"

Even he knew this wasn't going to be a good reaction because he took a very deep breath and a precautionary step away to say: "I'm afraid it's not good news."

Kono put a hand out to Danny simply to keep him from lunging in case he felt the need to do that, but he shrugged the hand away as the doctor continued to talk.

"Commander McGarrett has suffered a devastating trauma to his liver. A bullet must have been cut into multiple fragments, making the entire organ inoperable. If he doesn't receive a new liver in the next few hours, he will die."

That was one hell of a bombshell to be dropping on them.

"So, we get him a new liver, it's not that hard, he needs a new liver get him a new liver!" Danny cried.

"Well it's not that easy. Commander McGarrett doesn't have the kind of time to find him a donor that is a match. He only has a few hours even if we did find one, we wouldn't have enough time to get it to him. Does he have any immediate family on the island?"

Danny shook his head. But Kono was already thinking. "What about us? One of us might be a match. I'm down to get tested."

"I'm in," Chin said.

"Me too," came from Grover.

"We can certainly run some test to determine which, if any of you, are the correct tissue match for Commander…"

But Danny cut him off. "Let me just save everybody some time. Uh, Steve and I are the same blood type. Uh, so just, you know, just use mine."

Wow that was… that was really selfless of Danny, and they all assumed it meant that he would be lording it over Steve in the future. Maybe it would finally get Steve to stop acting so recklessly.

The doctor nodded. "Alright, let's get you in there to get tested to make sure, and if it's a match we'll prep you for surgery ASAP."

Danny nodded, went to follow the doctor who was walking away and then turned back. "Could someone pick up Grace from school or go to her home to tell her what's going on, I don't want her to worry."

They all nodded but it was Kono who went to go get her from school. Being sure to call Rachel to tell her what was happening and why she wanted to pick up Grace. From there Rachel called the school so they knew that Kono was coming to get Grace, and she texted Grace to look out for her Auntie Kono.

Kono took her car to go get Grace. She was just supposed to tell her what happened then sit with Grace at home to give her updates. He hadn't said it outright, but she knew he'd want to see her before he went in for his operation and she knew Grace would rather be there with her dad then sitting at home waiting. But Grace couldn't be in the dark about this and Kono was not off to a good start after blurting out: "Something bad happened."

Once she assured Grace that Danno was okay, she moved onto the real problem. "Uncle Steve was hurt pretty bad. The doctor says he needs a new liver. But they said there's not enough time to wait to find a donor either on the island or in the mainland. Your dad is a direct match to Uncle Steve so he's going to be donating part of his liver to Steve."

Grace took that in and for a moment she went quiet. "Doesn't my dad need his liver?"

"You know, I didn't know this, but the liver is actually an amazing organ. It can completely regenerate. So, they're gonna take half of your father's liver and give it to Uncle Steve, and then in time, both livers will grow to normal size."

Grace was quiet for the rest of the drive, and once they got to the hospital Kono made sure to take her straight to Danny.

Danny who was trying to get this over with as quickly as possible. Grace walked in to her dad say: "Do me a favour. Let's just go in there and get it over with, huh?" and she couldn't let that happen, not without hugging him first.

She didn't say hello, even though her dad asked her why she was there, she simply hugged him. Laying herself down on him.

"Hey monkey. You know I got a broken rib, right?"

No, she did not know that. So, she got off of him immediately. "What are you doing, huh?" he asked then clocked the tears she couldn't help but be crying. "What are you upset for? Everything's gonna be alright. Promise." He lifted a hand to wipe her tears away. "Wipe those tears away. What are you doing?"

Already she felt better, like everything was going to be okay in the end. But when she was walking her dad over to the surgery area, his hand tightly gripping hers, she could see Uncle Steve already prepped and ready to go and she knew that, without Rowan, Steve going to need all the positive vibes he could get. So, she got out her phone and called everyone she thought would care enough to come to the hospital and sit with him. Being sure to send an extra text to Nahele to see if there was anyway that he could call Rowan.

Because even with all the extra help, she knew that what Steve needed most, was Rowan.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Danny and Steve had been in the hospital for less than 38 hours when Steve got the visit from someone he wasn't expecting. He opened his eyes on his second night in the hospital and was looking up at his mother.

"Mom," he whispered. Was this the morphine? There was no way his mother was standing over him right now. She was on the run, hiding from the government. Hiding from him.

"Hey Stevie, how you doing?" she asked. She looked tearful. She looked afraid.

"I've been better," he asked reaching out to touch her. Her hand met his and held onto him tightly. "I'm not dreaming this? You're really Doris?"

She laughed a single tear falling down her cheek. "Yes, I'm really here. I wish I could stay longer, I wish I had gotten here sooner, I'm so sorry it took me so long."

"How did you know?"

"Well, Rowan came to see me," she answered and Steve felt the air leave his body. His heart rate picked up sending his monitors into a beeping frenzy. "Oh geeze, Steve, are you okay?"

"You saw Rowan?" he asked. "How is she? How did she look? Do you know where she is?"

"Yes, I saw her, I talked to her too. Other than her being frantic she looked okay. I've been trying to keep tabs on her, but I'm not sure where she is currently. She and Wo Fat move around a lot," she told him.

Doris pulled up a chair now that Steve was a bit calmer and while she did that Steve thought about what she had told him. Rowan had shown up and told her what had happened to him. That meant, if she knew to go to his mother in advance she must have dreamed about it sooner. She sounded frantic, did that mean she cared? Maybe, but not enough to warn him about it.

"Rowan showed up on my door step four days ago. Told me that you were dying. Which I told her was wrong because I had just gotten a report from my contacts saying that you were fine. You were about to go undercover for a mission, but you were fine," she said. Four days ago? And she had just shown up? Goddamn her and her fucking powers. She clearly had a larger range with her portals than Steve had thought she had. "But she was adamant. She was adamant that you were shot and you needed me. She begged me to come to you, she begged me to go see you, but I figured she was lying and sent her back to Wo.

"Next day I got in touch with my contact who confirmed that you had been shot and that you were in the hospital undergoing surgery for a liver transplant. He had been getting ready to tell me what had happened. I immediately moved to get here, but it was hard, I was trying to get in undetected, but they detected me, I don't have much longer to stay," she told him.

Steve nodded, he understood. "I just wanted to make sure that you were okay," she said. "I was so worried about you."

"I'm okay mom," he told her and she smiled. "Did Rowan tell you how she knew?"

"No. But I'm guessing it was one of her dreams," Doris answered.

"She's still dreaming?" Steve asked.

Doris' smile faded into a sort of distant frown. "I guess you wouldn't know. Wo Fat mentioned that she's been dreaming of Five-0 and your cases. She dreamed that Adam was going to get in trouble with the Yakuza and sent people to deal with it. She dreamed that you guys had a mole in your ranks. She's dreamed about bodies in suitcases, that Danny had to shoot a man with a bow and arrow, that Lou was going to be chased through a jungle with his family and of course, this one, that you were going to get shot while you were flying an airplane," she listed.

He had known for a while that she was getting visions, knew it was her reaching out to him to help them. But that had been assumptions, but part of him had thought that it wasn't really her and just her app. That someone else monitoring them and Rowan was not involved. But hearing that she was involved, that everything that had happened had really been her was something completely different. Which meant that every time someone had come to help him, they had been sent by her.

"Honey… do you miss her?" Doris asked and Steve nodded. He started to cry, and he blamed the morphine. The desperate need to see her burned a hole in his chest. He just wanted her to stay, to come home but he didn't know if she wanted him. He didn't know if she even actually wanted to come back.

"I think… I think he's been lying to her and to me," Steve told her.

"Oh yes, he definitely lied about a lot of things," Doris admitted and Steve frowned. Why hadn't she said anything to either Rowan or Wo Fat? Was it really because Wo Fat was her favourite son? Because it definitely looked like it.

So Steve ignored her and continued. "She thinks I didn't come to Japan. She says she never called me and told me she wasn't coming back."

"Is that what she said?" Wait… what? That was true? He had been assuming she had just been lying to him. "Steven, I honestly don't know much about what happened but I can definitely tell you that somewhere there was a miscommunication."

"Yeah, everyone keeps saying that," Steve muttered shifting in his bed.

"Honey, I don't know why you believed her in the first place," she told him. "The man's lied to you about everything else. It's reason enough to believe he'd find a way to a fake a phone call between you and her. You gave up way too easily."

Really? That's what his mother thought? Really? She wasn't going to hold back? Really?

"Thanks mom, great way to make your injured son feel better," he snapped.

"Steve, honey, I want you to be happy. And you're happy with Rowan. So, stop moping and go get her," she said.

Steve found himself getting sleepy and only then did he notice his mother's finger on the button that controlled his morphine dose. Oh, that bitch.

She leant over him and pressed a kiss to his forehead. "Chase your happiness. Don't let me ruin it for you. And don't forget, I'm proud of you and I'm always watching out for you," she whispered.

Things got cloudy and though he was fighting it, Steve found himself falling into a deep sleep.

H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O

Rowan walked out of the void and into the hospital room. Despite all her practicing, though she had managed to get the portal to appear in the right doorframe of the hospital, she came through the portal on the wrong side of the door. What she wanted to be, was in any empty room, where she ended up was in a darkened hallway. Damn, she was lucky a nurse wasn't making rounds.

Usually when she opened a door it opened to where she wanted to be, so long as she had been there before. To be fair, she didn't know what room Steve was in, and the void always did react funny when he was involved. But that didn't change the fact that she wasn't standing in Steve's room, there was a door in front of her though and she had a feeling it was the right door. She slipped in, the familiar warmth of Steve's presence sliding over her, filling those nooks and crannies that had been empty and cold for months now.

She turned to him, shocked by the man lying in the bed. He looked so fragile. So sick. His hair was different, shorter. Guess Catherine didn't care about the hair. It wasn't that it looked bad, she just wasn't used to it. Just like he probably wouldn't be used what hers looked like under the wig.

But there was one this that struck her.

He was so pale.

The bags under his eyes were a deep purple, the bruises and red cuts along his jaw and up and down his arms looked garish against his color. She had never seen him look so injured before.

She took the two lucky bamboo plants and the card she had brought with her and put them down onto the table set off to the side. Then she carefully and quietly picked up a chair to bring to his side. She quietly went about arranging herself beside him and then carefully, almost hesitantly, took his hand. The second she made contact that familiar electricity flew up her arm almost immediately like she knew it would. It was so strong, probably because they hadn't been together in so long, that it caused Steve's eyes to blurrily open.

Oh god. He was also so very high.

His eyes turned to her blearily taking her in, "Rowan?" he murmured to her a slow lazy smile growing on his face. His fingers tightened around her hand. "Rowan."

"Hi," she said to him, her voice barely above a whisper. "Hey, baby."

"Where are you?" he asked. "I've been looking."

"I'm a little bit of everywhere," she answered. Her spare hand came up to brush her fingers through his hair. Oh so soft. So short. Only a small tuft at the top of his head for her to play with, he had gone a little bit greyer too, but she thought those speckled greys made him look a little bit more distinguished. His eyes closed, a small smile donned on his lips at the contact, but they didn't stay closed for long. As always, the man couldn't keep his eyes off of her.

"I miss you," he sighed, his eyes closing again.

"Oh, Steve, I miss you too," she admitted.

"Then come home," he said, his eyes still empty. "I want you to come home."

"I want to Steve but I can't," she told him. She hadn't even told Conejo that and she had told him almost everything. "I can't bear to see the two of you together."

"I'll break up with her," was Steve's immediate response.

"You can't break up with a wife, Steve," she chided. God he was so handsome. If only he hadn't married Catherine. She'd stay with him in a heartbeat.

As Steve let out a string of grumbling, in the bed beside him Danny began to shift. Damn, she really had to leave or she'd get trapped here.

Besides she still had to go help Doris.

Rowan took her hand out of his hair and Steve's eyes opened wider. She went to let go of his hand and suddenly he was clinging to her.

"No."

"Steve you have to let go," she whispered.

"No. Please. I don't want this dream to end."

He thought he was dreaming. He thought this wasn't real. Well that wasn't that bad. That actually worked out. She could do anything now. Anything at all.

"It's not ending," she whispered. "It's just beginning. Close your eyes."

Steve quietly obeyed. And as soon as his eyes fell shut Rowan swept in and kissed him. Steve whimpered against her lips and shivered against her touch as her fingers skimmed that chiselled jaw line.

She kissed him until he softly sighed and relaxed back into his pillows. Oh Steve, the poor boy. Where was his wife? Sure, visiting hours were over but that wouldn't have stopped Rowan from being here with him. Catherine just wasn't as devoted as she was. Oh well, Steve had made his choice.

She crossed to the other side of the bed where Danny was rolling over towards her. His tired eyes half opened, he too on pain meds.

"Hey there chopped liver," she whispered to him. "How are you feeling?"

"Haha," was all he said for a long while and then he added: "Like shit."

Rowan tried to smile at him as she ran her hands through his hair. Danny continued to glare at her. "You need to stop being selfish and come home," he snapped. "He needs you."

And that was the end of the conversation because he just rolled back over and went back to sleep.

Rowan got herself up and moved back towards the door. She put her hand on the door knob and took a deep breath. She glanced back to where her two boys were lying and then shook her head. She couldn't stay and if she dallied any longer, she'd never leave and Wo Fat would kill her. Or at least be really, really mad at her.

So, she opened up the void, swung open the door and stepped in.

This whole travelling through the void and not being in constant pain was amazing. Of course, the second she walked in those red strings curled around her ankles and her wrists. She flicked them away so she could walk, and they chose to curl around her aura like vines. She carefully looked around, somewhere around her was the right string. A yellow string came towards her pulsing red and black. Ah, yes that would be it.

She gripped it, opened a partial door. She didn't need to step out, but she put her arm out, took a hold of a shoulder and jerked the person in. Doris came tumbling into the void, immediately flailing around. Rowan smiled yes, great, she got the right person. Doris's panicked eyes found hers and she saw the fear on her face, the utter amazed shock. Rowan turned away from her. Now, where was that string that took her back to Doris's place?

She literally just used it like two days ago. Hmmm… somewhere to the right, maybe?

She put the thought out into the void, waiting for it to respond. And there it was, a simple white string lazily making its way back to her. She pulled it, used it to open a door and then pushed Doris out through it.

She stepped out of the void after her and looked around the place to make sure that it was clear. Doris stared at her from the floor with mild horror on her face.

"What… where… how… what did you do?" she asked.

"I got you home nice and safe," she said to her. She looked around the shack. "It kinda sucks that you picked this over being home with your son, though, not going to lie."

"You're one to talk," she said. "When you'd clearly rather be at home with my son too."

Rowan blinked her eyes. Yes, that was true, wasn't it? And she had really gotten over the whole jumping thing a lot more quickly than most people did. "This isn't about me," she said quickly opening up another portal for her to travel though. "Besides, your son made his choice now, didn't he?"

Rowan walked through the opening before Doris could finish whatever it was she was going to say to her. She got into the void and exhaled all her pent-up worry. There. Doris was safe. She had checked on Steve and he was okay. So was Danny, though admittedly, she was really just there to see Steve. Now she could go back to Andalucía.

She went to reach for the string that would take her back to her room at the house and she found that the usually white string was a vibrating red.

That wasn't good.

Rowan jerked the string towards her, jumping through the door ready to fight, ready to pull anything she had to in after her to protect her house and her family from whatever was happening back in Spain.

But the only person who was in trouble was her. Wo Fat was just sitting on her bed, a dark glare on his face. Rowan kind of wished she had stayed in the void.

"Where did you go?" he hissed. His voice so low that she could tell it was vibrating with anger. Ah so the danger was to her not to Wo Fat. The void had been warning her about an upcoming argument. That was new and quite appreciative.

"Before you answer, keep in mind that I can see that the bamboo trees and the card are gone and I just got off of a rather interesting call with Doris."

Aw that damn snitch. There was no point in lying. He knew what she had done. He knew where she had gone.

"I… I went to see Steve," she whispered. Wo Fat said nothing but his eyes narrowed dangerously. "I wanted to see if he was okay."

"So, you just popped in for a visit," he said, not asked, said. "Just shot yourself with the energizing gun and went through the void."

"I also helped Doris get away from the Feds," she said. "She did call you after all so you know I helped! Is she okay by the way? She was a little freaked, not gonna lie."

"God. Rowan," Wo Fat snapped. "Don't you see what's happening?"

"What? That I'm helping people?"

"That you're getting addicted," he snapped and Rowan recoiled.

"You're just afraid I'm going to leave you," she growled.

Wo Fat stood suddenly, he picked up the blazer of his suit which lay discarded on her bed and slowly went about putting it on.

"I'm not your Commander McGarrett. If you want to leave there's nothing stopping you," he said fiddling with his cufflinks which meant he was either nervous or uncomfortable. He turned his eyes to her. "I'm worried for you. I'm worried that you're going to push yourself too far and come apart. I can't help you if you get lost in the void. If you get swept out into another reality, I won't be able to save you from it. And we both know that when Steven gets involved your powers don't work right."

Rowan lowered her eyes. "I just wanted to help."

"Yes, and I commend that. But this is a very unstable science you're playing with, Ro. And it's only a matter of time until the army decides they want to weaponize it. As ruthless as you can be, I don't think you'd like being a weapon for the army," he said.

Rowan frowned at him even though she knew he was right. Wo Fat put a hand to her shoulder. "Let's pace ourselves. Okay. Take a break. We can practice when it's safer. Okay?"

Rowan nodded and he immediately pulled her in for a hug. His heart was racing. He was either furious or afraid. Rowan was afraid to ask him to tell her which it was.

"I'm sorry," she found herself whispering almost crying. "I just… you should have heard him. He was screaming for me and I… it stuck with me. I just… I just wanted to see that he was okay. I know that's stupid… I just…"

"I know," he whispered, holding her a little closer to him. "I do I know."

After a few emotional seconds locked in his arms, he pulled away from her. "So, go on. Tell me. Tell me how your McGarrett is doing. Did he like the card?"

Rowan pulled her head out of his chest and smiled up at him. He didn't care about Steve, he didn't even like Steve but he was asking because she did.

It was scary how similar to Trevor Wo Fat really was.
