A/N: Happy Wednesday my wonderful readers! Nine more chapters, guys! Nine more chapters and they're back together. And it's starting right now! So, we have someone returning to the story! We've seen him before, now haven't we? As I mentioned before I'm changing things a bit, so the rest of episode 1 will be coming later as will bits and the same stands for the pieces of the second episode I've left out. We're going to say that this episode is happening some time beginning of July, which means that Steve and Rowan are getting back together sometime mid July. And then we have the rest of summer months to worry about, which should be fun. What do you think? Good plan? Don't forget to leave a review, I'd love to hear what you guys are the most excited about, and I'll see you guys on Friday!
Chapter 290
Steve had been in a bad mood all morning. Of course, he didn't like that they had found a dead girl who was killed by a British spy running rogue in Hawaii. Yes, the was clearly looking for something in her apartment but that didn't explain why he killed her, just that, if he was willing to take that much heat that meant what ever he was looking for was pretty big. But that didn't excuse his behaviour.
"So, what's going on with you?" Danny asked and Steve sighed. "Don't get cagey with me, what is it, what's going on?"
"I… I had a theory, about Rowan," Steve said.
"Yeah? What about?"
"That somewhere we had a mix up with her DNA," Steve said. "And I was right. The DNA we have on file for Rowan isn't Rowan's DNA. It's Melissa Courts. Max confirmed it before he left for Africa."
Danny nodded taking that in. "Okay, and uh… so that would explain why…"
"Why I can't find her. Yes. I'm doing a wide sweep with her newly updated DNA and I got a hit back on a couple of heists that were suspected to have been pulled by Wo Fat."
"Well they had to be if Rowan was there."
"Yes, but why was Rowan there, Danny? Why the hell would he take her on heists? Huh? That doesn't make any sense the girl is a fucking hazard she couldn't even walk straight and he took her on a heist?"
More than one heist actually. It didn't make sense. Rowan would have been of no assistance on a heist. She was hyperactive, she wandered off, and there was no way to ensure she would go wildly off of plan. Not to mention she was supposed to be in hiding? Why involve her at all?
"Maybe because she wanted to be? You ever thought that maybe, after a year of being with Wo Fat she might have, oh I don't know, started working with him?"
Steve didn't even want to think about it. Because he wasn't sure he could handle a Rowan who had become like Wo Fat. He didn't want some Wo Fat version of her, he wanted his Rowan back. And luckily, they caught a break in their case and he could ignore the worries that were creeping up on him. Grover called that they had a lead on their spy Harry Langford and that was them in the Camaro giving chase. A little too erratically for Danny's taste considering the roads were wet and winding.
"Hey, wanna see what I had for breakfast? Keep driving like a jerk!"
"Would you man up once in your life?" Steve snapped as he was still in a terrible mood.
"Man up?" Danny echoed.
"Man up."
"Are you talking to me, man up?"
"Yes."
"The guy who saved your life, going through life-threatening surgery gonna talk to me like that, man up?"
"Oh, my God. With the liver again? How long you gonna hold that over me?"
"Forever. Or until we die in a spectacular car crash. Three minutes from now."
Steve couldn't help it he just rolled his eyes and kept after the spy who was trying to evade them in a silver Bentley. As if that car didn't stick out at all.
The chase continued on, with Danny muttering and yelling things like: "Hey, hey, hey," all of which Steve ignored. They cornered the guy in an alleyway where he then ditched his car and took off. Launching himself over a fence and disappearing a bit before Steve caught on to where he had gone.
Into a laundromat's warehouse.
Steve followed after him, his gun drawn ready to go, but the guy popped out of nowhere with a hose and sprayed him, they, after a few well-placed hits he pinned Steve and managed to get a tube wrapped around his neck. The bastard was trying, and succeeding, in chocking him. Steve headbutted the guy away from him, but now he was winded and he had stars in front of his eyes. Making him an easy target.
Langford came at him with a broom and all Steve could do was dodge. He used a washer door to block one hit, which broke the broom, but Harry kicked that same door into Steve's gut sending him flying to the floor.
Langford came at him again with the broken handle from a broom and mop, taking swings much like a batter would. Steve eventually disarmed him using a towel, and then blocked a kick with that same towel, using it to flip Langford off of his feet. Langford hit the floor with a crack and whumpf and Steve got onto of him and hit him. But he only got one hit before Langford tangled his legs around Steve's neck trying to strangle him again.
God what was with this guy and the strangulation?
Steve managed to get himself stood up and then he dropped both Langford and himself to the ground. The pain of hitting his back again dislodged him but he slipped out of the hold Steve had on his leg, to keep him from strangling him again. In the struggle, Langford managed to get on his back, and got into yet another choke hold. He was almost about to black out when he heard Danny's voice.
"Hey, hey, hey, hey, hands in the air! Hands in the air. Yes, you." But Langford didn't let go right away so Danny had to say: "Now, now. Yes. Back away."
And finally Steve was free.
"Well, I guess we can call that a draw," Langford announced. His British accent oh so proper, his voice oh so smug.
Steve elbowed him in the face. He already hated this guy.
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
Steve and Danny had perp walked Harry Langford into the Palace, down that elevator and into one of the interrogation rooms. And other than being a little sassy and a little too interested in the picture that they had up on the smart table when he came in, he hadn't really said much.
He had actually stopped walking when they went by the smart table where Rowan's face loomed from the monitors. Steve still had the computer running her face through TSA's database, around the fucking world, to see if she had come in on a plane anywhere. And of course, she hadn't shown up. But he knew everyone always thought Rowan was quite pretty when they first saw her, then they got to know her and figured that well… she wasn't worth all the crazy.
They had let him sit in the little box for a while before they finally went down to talk to him, their file about him in their hand.
Danny was the first to start talking. "I know I'm in the minority here, but Roger Moore was my favourite Bond."
"Oh, yeah?"
"I mean, I grew up watching him so that's probably why," Danny said and Steve nodded as Danny finally turned to Langford. "But you… you seem like the, um, the Daniel Craig type, right?"
Langford was smiling a little too much for Steve's liking. It was like the man thought they were playing a game.
"I suppose we can't all be Sean Connery."
Steve took the little parcel of diamonds out of his pocket. The ones they had found on Langford when they had stripped him of all gadgets and accessories and made him empty all of his pockets. "What about this?" he asked as he poured them out into his hand. "There's 20 million dollars worth of diamonds right there. I bet that's more than an MI6 pension."
But Langford said nothing. So Danny fished out his phone to get a better reaction out him. "Uh, do you recognize this girl?" he asked him while showing him a crime scene photo of the dead girl.
Steve saw actual remorse pass the man's face. Either he felt bad for doing it or he had no idea she was dead.
"You should because your DNA was found under her fingernails."
"There's a simple explanation for that," he said and then he pulled back the shoulder of his shirt so they could see the scratch marks she had left there.
"You had sex with her? That doesn't mean you didn't kill her," Steve reminded him.
"Commander, we both know I'm not going to be here for long. My government will insist that I be extradited," he said. "In the meantime, how about a cup of tea? Milk, no sugar."
"That's pretty funny,"
"No? Then how about I give you some parting advise Commander? Don't go after Rory Wickerby. It's a death sentence."
Steve paused he knew that name. How did he know that name? "What are you talking about?"
"You've got her picture slathered all over your monitors. You're clearly gearing up to go after Wick and I'm telling you now you shouldn't. Her boyfriend… he really takes her safety and wellbeing very seriously, and Wick herself isn't too fun to deal with either."
Both Danny and Steve exchanged glances but it was Danny who pointed to the ceiling and said: "He's talking about the search you got running upstairs." He then turned to Harry. "That's what you're talking about, the search upstairs. Right?"
Harry nodded. "Everyone thought it'd be easier to grab a girlfriend instead of grabbing him or that Rowan girl, but she's just as crafty as Wo Fat and he's just as violent in his attempts to keep her safe."
"He's talking like he's met them."
"I did meet them, yes."
Langford had all of Steve's rapid attention now. "You saw her, like you came face to face with her? With my Ro?"
"Oh? Your Ro? Are you Jamie then?"
"No, I'm Steven."
Harry blinked his eyes. "Okay now I'm confused. Why don't we get back on track, hmm?" he asked but Steve didn't want to get back on track. He wanted to know more about Rowan. "Look, I'm going to tell you this because time is of the essence and I need to get out of here as soon as possible." He paused there, most likely for affect before moving on. "That file your partner is holding is entirely fabricated. For the past three years, I've bene infiltrating the illegal arms market in order to track down a high-value target."
"So, what you're saying is MI6 disavowed you just to legitimize your cover, is that right?"
"Obviously, I regret ever involving Casta. She never knew she had the diamonds on her but she was alive when I left her apartment. If you're looking to make an arrest, I suggest you focus your attention on Lucky Morad."
Steve and Danny exchanged glances but didn't say anything which caused Langford to sigh. "If you want further verification that what I am saying is true, call the director of the CIA. He's fully briefed on this operation, which is a matter of international security. And extremely time sensitive."
"I'll make the call. If your story checks out, well release you. But there's a caveat."
"Go on."
"If you're gonna be operating on this island, you do it under our supervision."
"What exactly does that mean?" Langford asked.
"It means that whatever you're doing we are now involved," Danny said but that wasn't all Steve wanted.
"But first. First you're going to tell me everything you fucking know about the girl."
Harry sighed and with a dismissive shrug said: "I mean, sure. But it's your funeral."
H5O-H5O-H5O-H5O
After the phone call with the director of the CIA, after Steve was certain that Harry Langford was who he said he was and would be reporting to him, he let the spy out of the cell and put him in front of the smart table where he had the report on Rowan up, that picture of a smiling happy Rowan beaming down at him like she was happy to see him. He'd be happier if it wasn't just a picture looking back at him, if it were really her.
Harry looked at the picture and then back to Steve. "You said you knew who that was," Steve said. "Start talking"
"Of course, I know who that is. That's Rory. Wo Fat's newest girlfriend," Harry told them pointing at the picture. "She saved my life."
Danny looked to Steve and then back to Harry. "I'm sorry… Let's try this again…. What?"
Harry sighed and pushed Steve aside, pulling up the MI6 database and typing in his credentials. Steve was on pins waiting for this. Shocked that this suave Englishman knew of Rowan, even if he got her name wrong.
After a few seconds of typing he pulled up and file, sending the profile photo up next to Rowan's for comparison.
"Meet, Rory Wickerby, or as most people call her, Wick. She's a known associate of Wo Fat, who is a criminal arms dealer. He's been branching out recently and taking over different markets in different countries. We thought getting to Rory would mean getting him, but it turned out she knew absolutely nothing about his enterprise and he responds to ransom demands by killing everyone involved."
Steve was still looking at the photo. He was literally dumbfounded, because he had heard the last name Wickerby before, he had seen that name somewhere else before. But the real reason he was shocked was because of the photo Harry had pulled up.
There were a lot of differences between his picture of Rowan and MI6's. For starters her hair was at least six inches shorter, the tips dangling just past her chin. Her hair was no longer red and blonde but a dark brown similar Trevor's hair color. But it was those eyes. She wasn't smiling and they weren't her regular sparkling blue. Her eyes were the color of storms, a dark blue almost grey, lined with thick black liner, the wings strong enough to fly away on their own. She didn't look like his Rowan. She looked like a dangerous assassin. What the hell had happened to her?
Steve took the DNA sample, the new and correct one, and ran it against the DNA that MI6 had. It was a match. But no wonder his search hadn't found it, MI6 had locked her file.
"Well goddamn. I knew it. I knew they were the same girl," Harry breathed out. He then shot a long glance at Steve. "Then you must be the Steve they mentioned." He said it was a smile and Steve's eyebrows furrowed together. "Yeah. Both Rory and Wo Fat were very clear that she not tell me her real name in case it got back to a Steve. That's you. Isn't it?"
Yeah. That was him. And that hurt. She was purposely changing her name so he couldn't find her? He got it if it was Wo Fat doing it, but Rowan being involved surprised him. Did she really not want to come back to him? Even after his birthday phone call. Even after he told her that he hadn't wanted her to leave, that he had come looking for her.
Steve nodded absently. "Her real name is Rowan Pierce. Almost a year ago now she was kidnapped by Yukuza over stolen money. Wo Fat was her… her friend… he went and got her back, I went too but he got there before I did and he… he… I've been trying to get her back but I lost her when she went into Colombia," he whispered.
Harry shook his head. "When Wo Fat showed up with that woman in tow the first thing we did was run her against Rowan. The DNA is not a match."
"That would be because he corrupted her file, changed the DNA and Fingerprints. As you can see, I have a real sample of her DNA and they match" Steve said and Harry let out a string of wry chuckles.
"Alright, yeah, I can see him doing that. Wo Fat is absolutely rabid about that girl. It definitely fits then. Rory appears for the first time coming out of Colombia where one of Wo Fat's associates rules the underground with an iron fist," Harry said pulling up another photo, someone else they recognized. "Armando Diaz. We still don't know what exactly it was that went on when she was down there but they have a name for her: La Bruja. Means, the witch. They live in fear of Wo Fat bringing her back so they do everything Armando says."
"From there Rory and Wo Fat went to Canada. Not much arms dealing was done there, so we're not sure why he went. But they went across Canada. Started in Toronto and ended up in Victoria B.C. That would be where we lose her. There was nothing proven, but they did say that she got into some shit with a Russian mob working out of there. They went dark for a long time once they hit Victoria so there's a lot that why all we have is rumours."
"Like what?" Steve asked.
"Well, they think she and her brother robbed the Louvre, Harry Winston's in New York, the British Museum, and then a diamond museum in Africa. But there's no way that could have happened within two days. Then there was a rumour that she had gone to Moscow to take on a Russian mob… uh… the Stepanov's from my understanding… they've been wiped out."
Steve and Danny exchanged glances because they knew how she could do that. But it couldn't be true, because he would have felt it if Rowan had used the void. They also knew why Rowan would go after the Stepanov's but would she really fault them for things that were done in a different reality? Or had they done something else?
"When she appears again, she's in North Korea after her plane went down in the jungle. She had been separated from Wo Fat and Conrad, and taken in by Undercover special ops unit actually, they lost her though. They were in the process of transporting her to a Naval Base with the intent to hold and they got hit hard by Fat and Conrad to get her out. There was only one survivor, a man named Roger."
Dear god that was how he knew the name. The mysterious North Korea girl. It really had been Rowan that Calvin Roger had found out in that jungle.
"How did you find her?" Danny asked. Yes, yes that was a good question.
"Ah, well, after the rumour hit that Wo Fat was offloading goods said to have been stolen from the British Museum, MI6 obviously became interested. But between the heist In Africa, and her showing up in Moscow, they actually appeared in London. That's where I was put onto her. I won't bore you with the details, but my objective was to get closer to her and determine what she knew about Wo Fat. I was supposed to be infiltrating the Illegal Arms Market and he's a big player in that. Using her to get to him was all it was suppose to be. Then this newbie decided that he would try his hand at kidnapping her and it did not end well. It's only by her will alone that I survived that encounter. After that they went to different places in the U.K. Scotland and Ireland in particular. Then, of course, she went dark for a long while then she showed up in California where she promptly got arrested and disappeared. No one has seen her since."
Steve took that in. It was a lot to digest.
"Why didn't anyone move in on her? If you thought she was Rowan, why didn't you call me? I could have confirmed…."
"There's been a lot of watching and not a lot of moving in. We're all a little worried about what he'd do if he thinks she's threatened again. And for the most part he hasn't been caught doing anything illegal, he just keeps doing touristy stuff with her. I mean, we know he's working, we know his network is getting larger and spreading farther but we haven't seen him do anything accept take her places." Harry sighed. "And uh… as for you… well… there's a big red note on Rowan's file that calls you volatile and unpredictable with her. We all just assumed it was another bad break up like… like the other arrests."
Steve looked away from him. His own insanity over Rowan was why no one had contacted him about her. That… that was… that was his own damn fault.
His eyes turned back to the picture of Rowan, this image of her that he still couldn't reconcile as the woman he was once and still was in love with. This was why he couldn't find her. This was why her trail had gone cold after that trip to Colombia. Wo Fat had changed her name and her appearance and then corrupted her DNA profile so it could never be traced back to her. He opened up a file with surveillance photos. It was filled with stills of Rowan and Wo Fat's new life. Pictures of them at fancy restaurants. Pictures of Rowan in fancy designer dresses and wearing high heels so tall she was as tall as Wo Fat. Pictures of them shopping, of them holding hands and laughing. Pictures of Rowan at tourist attractions looking nothing like what he was used to.
This version of Rowan was polished and perfect. The kind of girl who'd look down her nose at him and scoff. There was no carefree attitude in the way she held herself in those beautiful dresses and skirt-suit combos. In towering stilettoed high heels, back ram-rod straight, eyes hidden behind cat-eye shaped designer black sunglasses.
"But she's his girlfriend? That's what they're telling people?" Danny asked as Steve still couldn't get the words out of his mouth. Still struck dumb by the pictures of Rowan. "And you guys believed that? I mean look at her, she's the spitting image of Rowan!"
"Well, of course. Wo Fat travelling with a female, we all assumed it was Rowan, but the DNA and fingerprints didn't match. Once that part was cleared, we began to operate under the assumptions that they were lovers. They're always together. Eating dinner or waltzing or visiting tourist places. If he's not with her he has a host of men who follow her around. Her personal body guard Conrad Bastian. Crazy parkour, hand to hand combat expert and trigger happy."
He pulled up another photo, of a debonair man in a leather jacket and swept back black hair. Steve recognized that crooked grin anyway. "Wait a second, who is that?" he asked.
"Uh… Conrad Bastian, another one of Wo Fat's uh… friends... Rory… Rowan, she always called him Con."
Steve immediately went into his files and pulled out the sketch he had drawn up of the man who had broken into his house and taken Rowan's seashell from him.
"Have you've met him before?" Harry asked.
"Yeah, he was here, he uh… stole something from me. I was told that he was on Rowan's security detail."
"Oh?" Harry asked. "Funny. From what we know he is her security detail. He's either the only one or the lead guy in charge…"
"He's the head of her security?" Steve asked. "Him? This guy?"
"Yeah… why?"
Because Kong had specifically said that the man that came into his house wasn't Sin Nombre.
"If I'm right, that's Sin Nombre. He was a… uh… a favourite assassin of Rowan's. Before she went missing, he had rescued her a few times. And uh… I heard that he was sent to derail me from finding her back when she was injured. Apparently, Wo Fat wouldn't have been able to move her if he hadn't intervened. But more recently he washed up on my beach, annoyed me for a few hours and stole something of emotional value to me. Now I know why."
"Was it something to do with her?" he asked. When Steven nodded, he nodded too. "He's very close to her. He's with her all the time. Follows her everywhere, he has no sense of personal boundaries. On top of that Wo Fat was always buying her jewellery and clothes so we all just sort of assumed, since she wasn't his sister, that it was a lover's thing," Harry said with a shrug.
"But they're not," Steve asked. Yes, that needed to be clarified. Because if she had started a romantic relationship with Wo Fat or this Sin Nombre guy he'd kill himself.
"No. According to Rory, Wo Fat and her crazy bodyguard, she's his employer. It wasn't until she got to California that she told people she was his sister. They say she's adopted. I'm guessing that's not true," he said glancing to Steve and then to Danny.
"No. She's not his sister," Steve growled. "And her name isn't Rory."
"But I mean, they've been telling people they're related long before this. So you know, to them, they're siblings," Danny admitted.
Anything else Steve wanted to ask flew out the window the second Grace came screaming through the doors.
"Uncle Steve! UncleSteveUncleSteveUncleSteve! Uncle Steve!"
"Hi monkey, what are you doing here?" Danny asked sarcastically because she had ignored him completely and he was her father. He was clearly concerned as Grace was supposed to be at home but she brushed him aside with a quick: "Hi Danno," and then practically pounced on Steve.
"I found it!" she cried shaking his arm. "I finally got in!"
Steve grabbed her shoulders to keep her from bouncing. "Grace what are you talking about?"
With one giant sweep she had gotten Steve off of her and wiped everything off of the smart table. She pulled up a website and plugged in a user name and password.
"Rowan's drop box," she answered triumphantly as if that explained everything. All Steve saw was folders.
"Uh… monkey… not that this isn't great, but…" Danny started but she waved him off and turned back to Steve.
"I heard you and Danno talking about Auntie Ro while you were in the hospital," she said quickly. "I know you said you were mad at her over the card, but you sounded so sad. I thought I'd try and help you find her."
Steve frowned. "Oh, Gracie, thank you, I appreciate that. But I have people all over the world looking for Rowan, they don't know where she's going to be next," he told her.
Grace looked up and softly whispered: "But I do."
Now that changed things a little.
"You do?" Steve asked. "How?"
"Well, while you and Danny were arguing in the hospital, I talked to Nahele. He's gotten a souvenir from everywhere Rowan's gone and I realized that everything was being visited in a certain order. Then I remembered her bucket list. She had written down all these places she wanted to visit at some point in her life and things she wanted to do. Then I realized that all the places he got souvenirs from, they were from her bucket list," Grace said. She was already typing into the smart table.
"Then I remembered, a few years ago, that Rowan had saved a bunch of stuff in her drop box, trip stuff because she was researching and all of that. I saw the folder when I went in to get my homework stuff, you know back when she was tutoring me in English. Anyway, I was pretty sure I still had the password lying around so I searched and searched for it and finally found it," Grace continued. Steve wanted her to get to the point, he wanted to know what it was she found and how she knew where Rowan would be going next. But she was so excitedly proud of herself that he didn't want to interrupt.
"When I logged in there were a bunch of new folders," she said. "And that's when I started piecing it together."
Steve was looking at 11 folders, all numbered, a few documents just loose and unfiled underneath them, though none of them looked important. He didn't understand and it must have shown on his face. Grace stood up and began pointing at all the folders.
"Number one has only three files. One is called Proof of Life, one is called SkullCam and the last one is called Rescue. I wouldn't recommend watching either of the first ones, but that last one, rescue, it wasn't that bad, it was pretty cool, "she said. Steve's blood ran cold, he had a feeling he knew what the videos were and he did not want to see either of them again. But Rescue, that one sounded interesting, he think he knew what that one was too.
"Number two is all audio clips, some are of you talking, others are of her talking," she said. "Number three is Paris. Number four is Rome and then Venice and I think her ride on the Orient express to uh… Berlin. Number five is Columbia and it has a file that I gave to Jerry cause it needs some password or something. Number Six is a cross country trip across Canada. Number seven is England, and the rest of the UK. Number eight is California. Number nine and ten are empty and I think it's being saved for their last stops. And eleven is filled with edited videos and pictures that I think were the ones that were sent to you."
Steve stared at the folders. She had just listed off every place that Harry had said Rory and Wo Fat had been visiting. But something she had said had piqued his interest. Had she said edited? "What do you mean edited?" he asked.
Grace clicked on folder number three and pulled up a video. "He sent you a video of her throwing a wish into the Trevi Fountain right?" she asked. When he nodded she pressed play.
It was of the back of Rowan, she was leaning at the edge of the fountain, her fingertips in the water.
"Ro?" Wo Fat called from the other side of the camera and she turned. It was the bruises that had him sucking in his breath. The pain fired up under his skin at the reminder of the pain she had went through, to see it once more on her face.
The burgundy top she was wearing hung off one of her shoulders, her khaki green shorts were too loose and it was the first time Steve's noticed that. Her hair had dark brown roots showing and he belatedly realized that it wasn't the shadows but her natural hair color showing through. Wo Fat extended an arm, a gold coin glittered in the sun light and her eyes landed on it. She took the coin he offered her as if it were the most precious of objects, like if she didn't hold it right it'd shatter. Her eyes came back to him but she made no effort to move.
"Make a wish," he told her and a small smile donned on her lips.
She looked to the coin in her hand, brought her cupped hands to her lips and he knew, almost immediately, that she was whispering her wish to it. She then closed her eyes, clasped her hands to her heart and then tossed the coin over her head and into the water.
Steve hadn't seen the first part of this video because the video he had started here. And he knew this part off by heart, he had seen it, replayed it on his phone a million times over. From the toss to what happened next, was ingrained in his memory.
Her eyes would turn back to the camera, her smile silken and enticing. The kind of smile that you gave your lover as you eyed them up. The kind she used to smile at him before he had gone and fucked everything up. But unlike his version the video continued and he saw that smile for what it really was.
A hooded one. A sad one. And suddenly this video had a whole new meaning to him.
"What did you wish for?" Wo asked, still not visible.
Rowan's smile drooped slightly as she whispered: "To be happy."
Her lips quivered and tears welled up in her eyes. She looked back down to her shoes, her hands quickly coming up to hide her tears as the sobs started. The camera dropped and he lost sight of her but he could still hear everything as Wo Fat wrapped her up in a hug. He could hear her soft sobs and Wo's murmurs of comfort.
"Don't worry," he seemed to be saying. "You will be."
As the camera raised up, most likely so Wo Fat could turn it off, Steve heard the first of Rowan's apologies marred by the hiccups of her sobs and then the video just stopped.
Steve was breathless once the video was over. The clip he had of that video, as well as the one of her waking up in bed, had been one of his favourites to watch. She looked happy. He had wanted her to look happy. But that moment that he thought were wonderful and magical and romantic, wasn't. What else had he been wrong about? What else had Wo Fat taken out of context to manipulate him into believing she was happier with him.
"How many of these are there?" Steve asked though his throat was clogged with emotion and he sounded more like a croaking frog.
"The folder is full of them," she told him. "Whoever that guy is, he's been documenting their whole trip. I think his name is Oz."
"Wo Fat," Steve whispered. "His name is Wo Fat. Rowan calls him Oz though."
Grace seemed to ponder this a moment. "Wait, you mean Uncle Oz? Wasn't he a criminal that you wanted her to stop hanging out with?"
"Yes."
"And Auntie Ro has been with him this whole time?" she asked, almost alarmed. "Has he got her Stockholm Syndromed?"
Steve laughed even though it hurt to do so. "No, I don't know actually. It's a really long story, but I think… I think he's treating her right."
Grace nodded. "Well it sure is nice of him to take her to all these places," she said lounging back
Steve eyed those folders, his eyes falling on number one over and over. No, he would not torment himself by watching that movie again. He didn't need to see what those men did to her. To distract himself he turned back to Grace.
"I believe you said that you knew where Rowan was going next?" Danny asked.
"Hmm? Oh yeah," she said. She pulled up a file that was not in any of the folders. "That is Rowan's bucket list. If you care to notice, you'll see that he's been going in order. Except she's done some extra things. Colombia wasn't on the list, neither was Canada. But I'm guessing she's going to be on number 4."
"Yeah and why's that?"
"Because that's the second last one on the list."
"Okay," Steve said softly. "And what was number four."
"Beauty and the Beast Waltz on the Disney cruise."
This was it, together with the new identity he could do it. He could find Rowan. He finally had enough to locate her, even if she had powers. All he had to do was find her, get to her without them knowing and then shut down her powers like he usually did.
"What's the password?" he asked her and Grace went about writing it down, as he did his eyes fell on folder number 1. He clicked it and he saw the video. The one called Proof of Life. His eyes burned just staring at it.
"Did you watch it?" Danny asked Grace as he pointed to the screen concern all over his face. Her eyes came up and caught sight of the file she shivered just looking at it.
"Yeah, I didn't watch all fifteen minutes. Once I realized what they were doing I turned it right off," she said trying to suppress her shudders and failing. She then turned to Steve. "I don't think you can handle it Uncle Steve."
Steve's head had whipped up. He glanced to Danny and then back to the computer screen. Fifteen minutes. The video he had received from Wo Fat had been less than four minutes. What could they have done to her for fifteen minutes? What had Wo Fat edited out? Had he only sent Steve the highlights?
He right clicked on the file to view its details. They confirmed that the video was fifteen minutes long. All he had to do was click. Click and he'd see everything that Wo Fat had seen. The famous video that sent Wo Fat so far off the edge that he and his people killed an entire building full of people and then set their bodies aflame. The video that put Riku Sato and his whole family in the ground. The video that started it all.
"Don't watch that video, babe," Danny ordered and Steve turned to him.
"It's fifteen minutes, Danny," he answered as if that explained why he needed to watch it.
"Babe, don't, you saw the highlights and you nearly had a stroke, this is going to be worse," he told him and he was right. That three-minute video had destroyed him what would fifteen minutes do?
"Not that this isn't great, but we have a terrorist to find," Harry reminded them and Steve slowly swept the files away and hen pocketed the password and username combo so he could get into it later. He'd watch the video at home, he was sure he could handle it… maybe.
Then he let Harry Langford tell him all about Nashid El Hamadi, the person behind the 2012 bombing of the UK embassy in Madrid, and how they were going to find him and stop him from buying and using a next-gen decryption tool called the Greystone capable of cracking any computer network, technology that had been borrowed off of a similar tool that came with the Sanctuary network. Wouldn't Wo Fat be proud?
But even with all of that, Steve's mind stayed on Rowan and that 15-minute video.
