The sword from a different angle by kewes
When Shirou heard the scream, he wanted to rush to help the person, but he understood that there was someone nearby who might attack him. Turning his back was not a wise decision. Looking at Tohsaka, she seemed to be deep in thought for a moment before suggesting a temporary truce until they figured out the source of the scream.
Rushing to the scene, they saw a girl in the school uniform surrounded by scattered papers.
Thinking the girl was simply asleep, Shirou was interrupted by Tohsaka, who pointed out that the girl's mana had been completely drained.
Fortunately, Tohsaka, using a precious gemstone, said she could heal the girl.
As she began her healing, Shirou felt as though someone was watching them. Looking in the direction from where he felt the gaze, he saw nothing. In that moment, a murderous intent overwhelmed him, and he realized that it could be a Servant. Understanding the target was Rin, Shirou quickly acted.
Just in time, Shirou managed to place his hand near Rin's head, as an instant later, he felt pain and saw blood dripping from his hand. A strange weapon had grazed him, and then it disappeared.
Turning to Rin, he saw her shocked and frightened, quietly murmuring that he was injured.
Realizing the Servant might attack again, Shirou got to his feet despite the pain in his hand. Telling Rin to save the girl, he ran into the forest from where the attack had come, unaware that Rin was holding her head and seemingly contacting Archer.
Venturing deep into the forest, Shirou barely dodged another attack. At that moment, he realized that going into the forest as bait for the Servant was not the best decision. Then he saw the attacker.
It was a tall woman with violet hair. She wore a mask over her eyes and was dressed in a scandalous outfit for modern times. In her hands, she held the same strange iron weapon.
As Shirou studied her, she attacked again, and a battle ensued—or rather, an outright beating for Shirou.
During the fight, a conversation took place in which the mysterious Servant praised Shirou for his bravery and called her own Master a coward.
When Shirou remarked that she wasn't impressive compared to other Servants, she immediately pinned him to a nearby tree, rendering him immobile.
Suspended, Shirou could do nothing as the unidentified Servant began musing aloud about what to do with him.
Suddenly, there was the sound of something flying, and the Servant leapt back just in time.
The tree that had been next to her was split in half.
Shirou fell to the ground as the chains binding him were cut.
Turning around, Shirou saw Saber, who stood for a few moments, staring at the Servant who had attacked him and Rin.
The violet-haired Servant clicked her tongue upon seeing Saber and dematerialized, clearly retreating.
Saber turned to Shirou and helped him to his feet. Just as he was about to say something, Rin and Archer appeared.
Archer looked rather battered, with small wounds visible all over his body, likely inflicted by Saber.
When Shirou glanced at Saber, he noticed a small cut on his forearm, suggesting that Archer had managed to catch him off guard once.
Rin rushed to Shirou and exclaimed, "Emiya, are you okay? We need to stop the bleeding. Do you have anything to wrap your wound?"
Shirou remembered the handkerchief Taiga had given him and handed it to Rin. She silently took it and began bandaging his wound.
When she finished, she asked, "So, that was a Servant?"
Shirou nodded and replied, "Yeah, she attacked out of nowhere. I don't know who she is, but there's clearly another Master at the school. Tohsaka, how's the injured girl?"
Rin smiled and answered, "She's fine now; there's nothing to worry about." Shirou nodded and took a few steps back.
Then, holding up the chair leg he hadn't let go of, thanks to the adrenaline, he asked, "Tohsaka, what about our fight? The innocent are safe, and no other Servants will interfere, so shall we continue?"
Tohsaka sighed and said, "No, that's enough for today. Besides, I owe you. Let's go treat your wound."
When they arrived at Tohsaka's mansion and Shirou's wound was treated, Rin began speaking:
"Let's summarize. There's another Master at the school, and it's likely that what he did to that girl isn't the first time."
"It's to give his Servant more mana, right?"
"Exactly, Emiya. The more mana, the better. A closed barrier has already been set up around the school. Anyone who enters will be drained or killed. You felt it, didn't you?"
"Yeah," Shirou said, recalling the morning when he crossed the school's threshold.
After a few seconds of silence, Rin continued:
"Listen, Emiya, I have a proposal. How about a truce?"
"A truce?"
"Yes. Not an alliance, but I'll temporarily cease fire until we deal with the other Masters. As long as you don't betray me, I'll support you."
"With your help, I'll have a much better chance. I'm glad we can be on the same side. Let's do our best, Tohsaka," Shirou said, extending his hand for a handshake.
When she shook his hand, she added, "This truce is temporary."
For the next few hours, they talked about magic, Shirou's training, his dream, and his adoptive father. In the end, they parted on a good note.
As Shirou and Saber returned home, his mind was filled with thoughts about everything that had happened recently.
When they were almost home, Shirou's thoughts turned to the moment Saber saved him from the mysterious violet-haired Servant. He had a question:
"Hey, Saber, can I ask you something?"
"Of course," Saber said, materializing.
"How did you find me so quickly when that Servant attacked?" Shirou asked sincerely, noting that Rin had been closer.
"I possess Mystic Eyes. Since birth, I've been able to track mana traces, which allowed me to find the Servant who attacked you," Saber replied, first closing his eyes, then opening them to reveal irises shimmering between red, orange, and yellow.
"I see. My old man never told me about Mystic Eyes."
"Then we'll have another lesson. In battle, it's crucial to know if your opponent has Mystic Eyes and what they can do," Saber smiled before becoming serious.
"Shirou, I have another topic to discuss. I know you're tired, but we need to talk now."
"What is it, Saber?" Shirou asked, feeling a headache creeping in.
"It's about your ideal. Don't get me wrong, it's not bad, but..." Saber paused before continuing, "You need to understand that you can't save everyone, especially if you can't save yourself."
...
Shirou looked at Saber, stunned. "Saber, you—"
"No, listen to me," Saber interrupted. "There's something I haven't told you. When a contract is formed between a Master and a Servant, we see glimpses of each other's pasts in our dreams. You've probably had some dreams about moments from my life that you didn't understand. Well, I've seen yours too. I've seen your greatest memory."
"You were saved from the wreckage by someone. There was fire all around. People were begging for help, but driven by your desire to survive, you couldn't save them. Later, when you were rescued and taken in, you began to feel guilt. Over time, your adoptive father passed his dream on to you before his death. When I woke from that dream, I hoped you would grow up and come to understand certain truths."
"Your dream isn't bad, but it's rooted in guilt and a promise you made to your adoptive father. That's not right. Your desire to help others should come from a different place."
Hearing these words, Shirou felt a surge of emotions—anger, sadness, and confusion. It felt like a betrayal.
"Saber, what do you even know about this? I survived while others didn't. How can you judge—"
Saber cut him off again. "Shirou, listen to me. I became a Heroic Spirit for a reason. I had a similar dream. But when I started saving people..." Saber sighed deeply, "I was confronted with a harsh reality."
"You can't save everyone."
"There will always be casualties. That's unavoidable. As a hero, your role is to minimize those casualties. But if you try to save everyone, sooner or later, you'll lose yourself. You'll lose the people closest to you. Shirou, you must understand what it truly means to be a hero. You might think the cost is worth it, but eventually, you'll realize it wasn't. Trust someone who walked this path and nearly lost the people he cared about. Someone who knows what it means to be a hero."
The more Saber spoke, the softer his voice became. Shirou could hear the depth of emotion in his words, and he saw how Saber was overwhelmed by memories. Shirou realized that Saber's words were born of personal experience.
"Saber, I understand what you're saying, but I'm willing to take that risk. I have to."
Saber clenched his teeth and replied, "And what about the people who care about you? Taiga, that girl Sakura—don't you think putting your life in danger will hurt them? They'll worry about you and suffer because of your recklessness. You need to understand there's a balance between being a hero for others and being a hero for those close to you. Only when you can maintain that balance will you become a true hero."
Saber took a deep breath and asked, "Shirou, what would you do in this situation: a bus full of people, including those dear to you, is headed toward the Servant who attacked you and that girl. If you save the Servant, the people in the bus will die. If you save the bus, the Servant will die. What would you do?"
Shirou, without hesitation, answered, "I'll save everyone."
Saber immediately countered, "That's impossible. You can't save everyone. And even if you do save them, what do you think the Servant will do?"
Shirou, still grappling with a storm of emotions, slowly replied, "Maybe she'll change her ways."
Saber shook his head. "That's only a possibility. What if she doesn't? What if she continues? Let me tell you the answer."
"You'll have to kill her. That's the only way to save many lives from this being."
After a long pause, Saber spoke in a quieter tone:
"Shirou, you were wrong the moment you thought you could save both the Servant and the bus. Servants aren't human, and they don't die in the conventional sense. We're Heroic Spirits. We're already dead. If you save the bus, nothing bad will happen to the Servant. I hope you'll understand that life is full of such choices. Please think about this, Master, and decide if you'll blindly follow your dream."
"As I said, your dream isn't bad, but the way you want to achieve it might bring pain and suffering to the people you care about. Please think about this. Goodnight, Shirou."
With those words, Saber dematerialized, leaving Shirou standing in the hallway, slowly processing everything he had heard.
After a few minutes, Shirou entered his room and lay down on the futon. For an hour, he reflected on Saber's words, and eventually, he came to some conclusions.
He decided what kind of hero he wanted to be.
