A/N Irregular upload this week because it is not a normal week for me hahahha
Anyways, this chapter has been live the past couple of days on AO3 so I just wanted to make sure they were uploaded before the weekend bc I'm graduating from University this weekend :D Long chapter, lot to unfold. Full A/N on AO3. Happy reading! :)
"Hello? Are you still here? Come back to Earth Dende." Cargo said, waving his hand in his brother's face.
It had only been a few minutes since the end of service. Gohan and Cargo wanted to congratulate Dende on a successful sermon, but he seemed distant and quiet.
"Maybe he's in shock." Gohan thought.
"I can smack him."
"Cargo."
Cargo shrugged. "He'd be more shocked by that. I'm sure it will work."
Gohan reached down to grab Dende's hands, squeezing them gently. "Dende? Are you okay?" He asked him quietly.
Dende jolted at the warm hands squeezing his. He looked up at his friend. "I'm fine. I'm just processing a lot emotionally."
Gohan smiled softly. "It's okay. You did great today. Your sermon was amazing."
"It was really good, Dende. I can't remember the last time I paid attention during service." Cargo said next.
Dende sighed in relief. Validation from his best friend and brother was truly all he needed. "Thank you, I'm glad you both enjoyed it." He spoke before darkening slightly and turning to his brother. "I heard you say you wanted to smack me."
Cargo held up his hands nervously. "I was kidding."
…
Time after service was normally spent together. Korin and Yajirobe would stay longer. Mr. Popo would make tea and a meal for everyone to enjoy. Everyone would conversate and enjoy each other's time in the temple. This Sunday was no different. Dende sat quietly in the pew alone while Cargo talked with Yajirobe, and Gohan spoke with Piccolo. His quiet was interrupted by a rhythmic tapping against the wooden floor, and soon, Korin was sitting beside him.
"Good afternoon Korin."
"Good afternoon kid. Great sermon today. I could tell how personal it was to you."
"Thank you."
"University is teaching you a lot. You were able to discover the Book of Kami's origin, learn that you're the next Guardian of earth. I'm sure that's not an easy pill to swallow."
Dende shook his head. "It's not. I've known for a while now, and it was difficult opening up to talk about it today. I'm sure so much will change from here on out, but I'm not afraid anymore. Things will be different, but better."
Korin nodded as well as he patted Dende's knee. "You've got it kid. We'll figure it out together. You've got me, and Mr. Popo. It's our duty to assist you, always have been."
Another connection Dende could make. Mr. Popo and Korin have always been guides for him spiritually and emotionally. He turned to them for advice, to unburden, or just to talk. They were always there for him, and they meant so much to him. Now he understood why. "You are both excellent guardian assistants. Thank you for getting me this far."
"We have a lifetime to go, this is only the beginning." Korin said before sliding off the pew. "I didn't want to take all your time, just wanted to check in. I'm gonna go bother Mr. Popo and see if he's making fish for today's meal. He hates cats in the kitchen." He added teasingly before walking off.
Dende chuckled quietly at Korin's words, and for a moment, he felt anxious about returning back to University. He seemed adamant about finishing the semester but now he considered the offer previously given to him: Staying home for the rest of the semester and returning in the spring.
Why did the idea start to sound appealing?
"You okay?"
Dende looked up, finding Gohan standing over him. "I'm fine, Gohan. I was just a little catatonic earlier, you don't have to keep checking on me."
Gohan laughed quietly as he sat next to his friend. "Sorry, you looked like you were zoned out again. Still thinking about your sermon?"
"No, I was thinking about school."
"Oh. I was thinking about it this morning. I felt a little weird about going back, but I think I'm over it. Now I feel a little more excited. I'm excited about using the new moves Mr. Piccolo taught me at Martial Arts Club. Sahir is gonna lose it." He laughed before adding, "Plus, I've been missing Videl the past few days. I can't wait to see her."
Dende smiled slightly. "I'm glad you're excited to see Videl. Talking about her in my sermon today made me think of her as well. I hope she had a good break." His mind wandered to her unknown pregnancy, and if she knew herself by now.
"What about you? How are you feeling about going back?"
"Honestly, I'm still anxious. I want to continue my studies, but I think I'm more homesick than I thought…I was given the option of returning to University in the spring, and the idea doesn't sound too bad anymore."
Gohan hummed at Dende's words. "It's a little funny, you know. I remember you telling me you didn't want to come home at first, and now you don't want to leave. But, I can't blame you. If that's what you want, then maybe it's what you need. No one's forcing you to come back. I want you to do whatever makes you feel better."
It was nice to have Gohan's support on the idea. It made him feel like whatever he chose wouldn't be a mistake. "I'm still thinking about it. I have at least this evening to make my decision."
"Okay. I'm sure my opinion doesn't matter in the decision you make, but for what it's worth," Gohan put a hand on top of Dende's. "I'd miss you like crazy if you didn't come back."
Gohan had no idea how much his opinion meant to him. It was so important, it convinced him to return to University without a second thought. Before Dende could tell him his decision, Gohan was already standing to dismiss himself. "But just think about it, okay? We'll catch up later, I'm going to go get my cape from Mr. Piccolo."
Dende watched Gohan walk off before sighing quietly. The quiet background chatter was comforting enough to fall asleep to. He adjusted himself, tilting his head back to rest it against the pew. Last night's journal session was starting to catch up to him. A few moments to rest his eyes wouldn't hurt…
"You'd be better off taking a nap outside while the sun is still out."
Dende inhaled sharply, eyes opening at the sound of someone else. "I think it would be rude to dismiss myself suddenly for a nap outside. I just need a few moments here to relax." He muttered, eyes closing again.
Moori waved him off. "No one will think it's rude. A sermon can take quite an amount of energy out of a minister. It's why Piccolo will often retreat to the back garden himself on Sundays."
"It's my last day home before I return to University. I don't want to miss any time with anyone."
"If we need you for anything, I'll have Cargo find you. Take some time for yourself, Dende. Your sermon was wonderfully heartfelt, and deserves a short nap in the sun."
"Father, I'm perfectly fine right here. I wish you wouldn't worry so much."
That earned a laugh from him. "Very well. Today is such an important day for you. I just want to make sure you're given the chance to rest and reflect properly." He said before leaning over to his son to speak quietly. "I've never been more proud of you Dende. I'm sure your grandfather would be just as proud of you."
The mention of his grandfather was like a stab in the chest. It physically hurt enough to make him sit up on the pew to reflect. Dende never thought about his grandfather on account that it was too emotionally overwhelming to think about. He absolutely idolized his grandfather Guru as a child, but lost him at such a young age. It was devastating. Even now in his late teen years, dwelling on the thought left him with clouded eyes. He stood from the pew. "I think I'm going to take some time out back." He spoke quietly, hoping the tears in his eyes wouldn't run over.
His father smiled and nodded knowingly, and dismissed him to the back garden.
.
.
.
Dende woke from a cool breeze passing by him. He sat up from the iron table, rubbing his eyes. His father may have cornered him into taking a nap but it was well needed. He felt refreshed. The warm sun felt good on his body until it was hidden by thick clouds. The day hadn't been wasted napping, he still had time to spend with his loved ones. He looked around, finding his uncle sitting on the other side of the table. "Nothing more entertaining to do but to watch me sleep?" He mumbled.
"There's nothing entertaining about hearing you snore."
Dende blushed at the reply. "I don't snore."
Piccolo hummed in response. "Have you gotten enough rest?"
Dende nodded. "Yes, is something wrong?"
"Nothing's wrong, I was just checking on you."
"Oh." Was his simple reply, surprised he would even take the initiative.
Piccolo looked out towards the valley, listening to the breeze that passed them by. "It was nice having a break from ministry today."
Dende nodded at his words. "I'm glad I could help."
"You seemed nervous. Your message was clear, but your mind wasn't. When your mind isn't clear it makes your sermon sound like you're rambling."
"You thought I was rambling?"
"No, it's just a lesson for you to learn. In the future, you want to journal first to plan your message. After that, you meditate before the sermon to clear your mind. The clarity will allow for your message to come across better, and help with the nerves of talking in front of others."
His advice was very sound. Writing in his journal late at night left him feeling tired and anxious during his sermon. He wanted to make sure he got all of his points across without misspeaking or showing nerves. However, he couldn't get his mind to stop racing during his sermon. Meditation would surely fix that. "Thank you for the advice. I'll be sure to consider it my next sermon."
Piccolo nodded as well before tapping his nails against the table. He wasn't good at things like this. Especially with Dende. "I know we've had our bouts this week, but I'm very proud of you. You show a lot of promise as a young minister."
Dende looked over at his Uncle. He knew him well enough that this was just his way of apologizing and making things better between the two of them. It was better than nothing, and the start of something. "I know it's trivial to you, but maybe just a few minutes of your time when I call home? Please?"
"Only on the condition that you don't annoy me with your college dramatics. I don't care about the parties you go to, or the friends you have."
Dende laughed at that. "That sounds fair." He agreed. "Well you seem to have enjoyed Gohan chasing after your coattails this week. I didn't think he'd take such a liking to you."
Piccolo scoffed. "Unlike you, Gohan respects me and values my teachings. He's strong and he listens." Piccolo expected nothing less from someone Dende was so close to. He had a good judge of character when it came to choosing someone to be his best friend, to be his protector. Gohan strived to do well, and be the best when it came to protecting Dende. Piccolo couldn't complain, and he had to admit, Gohan was a good kid. "Our training should have left him better equipped to protect you."
The peaceful conversation left Dende calm and full of relief. Finally, their relationship was getting better. It again made him think of the idea of staying home for the semester. He wanted to keep working on his relationship with his Uncle, maybe it would be better if he stayed like he wanted him to. "I'm sorry I didn't want to come home." He suddenly apologized.
Piccolo looked over at his nephew. "It's alright, Dende. I shouldn't have made you feel like you didn't have a choice."
Dende shifted in his seat. They were in such a good spot, and he didn't want to ruin the moment, but his curiosity was eating him alive. "Can I ask you something?"
"What is it?"
"What are you two doing out here?"
Dende and Piccolo looked over, finding Cargo standing at the back door.
Dende looked over at his uncle, then back at his brother. "Uncle Piccolo was keeping me company while I napped." He said and stood up from the table to return inside with Cargo. "I could use a cup of tea. Would you like a cup Uncle?" He asked looking back at him.
Piccolo stood from the table as well, nodding. "That would be fine."
Once the evening started to fall, Yajirobe and Korin made their way out of the temple to make their way home, the other members following to see them out.
Korin climbed to sit on the rear rack of the Nimbus bike. "We enjoyed today's special service. Congratulations again Dende. I look forward to hearing another sermon from you. Today's meal was delicious as always Mr. Popo. We'll see you next week, same time."
Yajirobe kicked the bike stand up. "We'll drop off the Nimbus and come back with the car to take you back to school. It shouldn't be long."
"Thanks again Yajirobe. Bulma's a bit indisposed at the moment to take us back I'm sure." Gohan said.
"No problem. See you soon." With that, Yajirobe peddled off down the heel.
"I'm going to finish packing, I'll see you back inside." Gohan told Dende before following the rest of the crowd back inside.
Dende hesitated on returning back inside. The time on his decision was up. Korin and Yajirobe would be back soon, and he still wasn't sure if he'd return to University or not.
"You've had quite a day. I understand if you'd want to stay home."
Dende looked back, finding Mr. Popo standing at the door for him. "I finally fixed things with Uncle Piccolo. I don't want to return to University if it makes us distant again, and my sermon today…"
"I assume your sermon was based on what you were afraid of talking about earlier this week."
He nodded.
Mr. Popo smiled. "Well, you've conquered your fear. I've been watching you prepare all week. You consulted with other members of the temple for advice, referenced the Book of Kami, and gave a thought-provoking sermon. If you feel like you've achieved your purpose at University, you're welcome to return home to begin ministering at your home temple."
This was it. The rest of his life was offered to him at that moment. Dende could return home, continue building his relationship with his uncle, be under the guidance of his guardian assistants Korin and Mr. Popo, as well as continuing ministering for Sunday service.
He could come home and begin his life as a rising guardian of earth, but it would also mean leaving behind his life as a young teen in college.
"As tempting as it sounds, perhaps a little more time in University for the experience and to build more friendships?"
"I've already packed your bag for you."
…
Gohan packed their bags in the trunk of Yajirobe's hovercar.
"Phone home soon my boy, you'll be missed terribly." Moori said giving his son a warm hug.
Dende held his father tightly. "I will father. I hope to visit again soon."
When Moori pulled away from his son he turned to his friend. "Gohan, it was a pleasure having you. We hope to see you again for service."
Gohan bowed. "Thank you Moori. I will definitely return for service."
"Be safe on your return. Study hard." Piccolo spoke next, putting a hand on top of Dende's head.
Dende sighed quietly at the gesture. "I will."
Piccolo spoke to Gohan next. "And you keep training. Remember the things I taught you, and keep him out of trouble." He hesitantly reached up and put a hand on Gohan's head.
Gohan beamed at the gesture. "I will Mr. Piccolo."
Dende could almost feel a tinge of jealousy rise for a moment, but was pulled out of it when he was pulled away.
"Don't listen to them. You get in as much trouble as you can while you're away. It makes our phone calls better." Cargo whispered to him.
Dende held back a laugh. "I'll be sure to tell you anything interesting while I'm away. I'll miss you." He said and wrapped his arms around his brother.
Cargo hugged Dende tightly. "I'll miss you too. I packed your vest for you. I know you wanted it back."
Dende pulled away from him. "I took it out. You're letting me keep your handkerchief. I thought it would be good if you kept something of mine, with my permission this time."
Cargo smiled. "Make sure you live a little before you start the rest of your life, okay?"
Something to be considered. "Okay."
"Dende, you ready?"
With a nod, Dende went over to the hovercar, and climbed inside. Gohan closed the door behind him before going to the other side to climb in. Soon, they were off, and headed back to University.
The trip to campus seemed long when they weren't flying in a VTOL. Dende laid asleep against Gohan while he watched the scenery change out the window. It was already late when they were parked outside their dorm.
After saying their goodbyes, Gohan walked Dende up to his room. "So, I guess I'll see you around, or next Sunday at the least."
Dende nodded. "Yes, I'll see you soon. Thank you for all you've done. You've helped a lot in comforting me in my process of grief."
Gohan smiled. "I'm glad I could help, really. I enjoyed spending time with you. I hope we can spend more time like that again soon."
Without warning, Dende leaned over to gently kiss Gohan's cheek.
Gohan's eyes widened, and he touched the spot where he kissed. "What was that for?"
Dende smiled, not covering up the lavender blush on his cheeks. "Just a part of my gratitude for your help. Good night Gohan."
Gohan seemed enamored by Dende's boldness and his sweet blush. He fought the urge to sweep Dende off his feet, and instead distanced himself from him. "Good night Dende." With that he rushed off down the hallway and back to his own dorm.
Dende reached back and pushed his door open, stepping inside with his bag. He sighed quietly at the small, familiar room.
"I'm glad you made it back. I was beginning to think you weren't coming back."
Dende looked over at his roommate laying in his bed with his tablet. "And leave you without a roommate? Chiaotzu, I'd never."
Chiaotzu looked over at his roommate, and grinned. "That's a relief. I feel like they wouldn't give me someone as tall as you for my replacement." He said before asking, "What's with the cape?"
"They're worn for service at my temple." He said, pulling it off.
"I like it. It looks nice on you."
"Thanks." Dende said as he draped it over his desk chair and sat down. "How was your break?"
Chiaotzu shrugged. "It was okay. I had some meetings my first week with parliament. They're concerned about my safety on campus. They didn't like that I was so close to a 'dire situation,' so they're making Tien watch me closer and check in more."
"Well that's good, right? Your safety is important as an emperor."
"Yeah but it compromises my privacy. I don't want to see Tien out of the corner of my eye every time I'm walking to or from class. How am I supposed to skip?" He asked. Tien could keep a secret, but what good was it keeping it from parliament if he was just going to be scolded by Tien himself? "How about your break? Did you get some rest?"
"Plenty. Gohan's family is very nice, and Gohan enjoyed my family as well. We went on a hike with his little brother Goten. I spent time with my brother. I meditated with my uncle, and I led my first sermon at service this morning."
Chiaotzu smiled. "Congrats. I hope it went well."
"I think it did, everyone seemed to like it." He said before standing up and working on emptying his suitcase. It was so late. At this point he just wanted to unpack and go to bed. Tomorrow started a new day, and a new week of classes.
…
Meanwhile, downstairs Gohan pushed his dorm door open, pulling his suitcase in behind him. "Hey Sahir." He greeted upon entering.
Sahir had been sitting at his desk reading when Gohan came in. "Hey, it's good to–whoa." He stopped in his tracks when he saw his roommate.
"What?"
"Super cool cape brother."
Gohan smirked as he modeled his new cape. "You think this is cool, you should have seen it with shoulder pads." He said. Unfortunately he wasn't able to have his cape like Piccolo's since the shoulder pads were weighted and he'd have to get one made, but he promised he'd have one the next time he visited.
Sahir laughed; he couldn't imagine the look. "You're back pretty late, did you visit Videl first?"
"No, we just got back. We had service this morning. We just didn't leave right after."
Sahir pushed up his glasses. "Oh, I see. Your face is a little red so I thought you saw her already."
Gohan reached up to his warm flushed cheeks before shaking his head. "I'm going to see her now. Just dropping off my stuff and showering before I do. How was your break?"
"It was good. I got some sleep, did some chores. Nothing special. How was yours?"
Gohan pulled off his cape. "Not bad. Kept Dende company, got some sleep, and some training in."
Sahir nodded. "I saw Erasa earlier. She said she spent the second week with Videl at her place. They got back Friday."
"Friday? Pretty early isn't it?"
Sahir shrugged. "I guess they wanted to beat the crowd."
Videl pushed her dorm door open, wrapped in her bath towel, freshly showered. She was waiting to see Gohan, but it was getting late. Videl told Sahir to pass the message to come and see her when he returned, but she didn't account for him returning at night. Videl toweled herself off, then pulled the towel wrapped in her hair off.
After dressing in her pajamas for bed, she sat at her desk to dry her hair and apply her creams and oils. The break was much better after Erasa stayed. Her father worked so much that they only had three days out of the two weeks they had. She was so lonely her first week. Videl was hoping that Gohan would have kept her company with phone calls, but he never called her back after the first night. She wanted to be mad but she wasn't sure if she couldn't. Videl knew that he was helping Dende through a grieving process, which was understandable.
But still, she was at least a little upset.
Videl stood from her desk, and pushed her chair in. Instead of going to a clinic in West City, she waited to visit the health center on campus for an ultrasound appointment. No one was on campus Friday, she could have her privacy respected a little better. The only ones in the room were her, the doctor, and Erasa. She was already six weeks, just over a month. Upon leaving the clinic she swore her roommate and best friend to secrecy. Erasa wouldn't tell a soul until Videl was ready for people to know.
There was a knock at the door.
Videl left her room, going out to pull the dorm door open. "You're lucky I'm still up. I was about to go to bed."
Gohan smiled sheepishly. "I got back late, sorry."
Videl allowed him inside, and he followed her to her room.
"How was your break?" He asked, closing the door behind him.
Videl climbed to sit in her bed. "Quiet, but Erasa spent the second week with me."
Gohan frowned. "I'm really sorry Videl, I should have called you back."
"It's okay, I know you were busy." She seemed to forgive him but the lack of eye contact suggested otherwise. She swallowed the urge to cry, assuming it was just pregnancy hormones making her feel so emotional. "I just missed you a lot, and I feel like you didn't miss me."
Gohan expected her to be more angry than anything, but instead she seemed to be hurt. That was worse than her being mad. Gohan always reassured Dende of their friendship, he should be doing the same with his girlfriend. He wrapped his arms around her waist and leaned into her. "Of course I missed you." He whispered against Videl, and leaned up to kiss her. Her skin was so soft, and she smelled so good. He missed the curves of her body, and the nape of her neck. He missed the defined muscles on her arms and abdomen. He missed her soft thighs, and the moans she made when he satisfied her. How could he not miss her?
Gohan climbed on top of Videl, and she fell back against the bed. "I want to make it up to you. How about dinner this Saturday?" He asked in between kisses on her neck.
Videl gave a low chuckle. "Like a date? All this time we've been together, and you finally ask me out on a date." Gohan still proved to be just as weird as the day she met him, but at least she was getting used to it. A date wasn't a bad way to apologize, she was looking forward to it. Videl wrapped her legs around him. "Sure, as long as it's not a buffet."
"No promises."
The school days passed by cautiously, finally working back up to a fever pitch. By Thursday, campus was buzzing with talk of a bar crawl happening in town tonight. The bar strip was welcoming back students with a night of bar hopping, cheap drinks, discounted food, and free entry for all students.
Dende went about his week slowly. It was strange walking past the greenhouse. It was strange not seeing a mountain of thick auburn hair in some of his classes. One class, he pulled out notecards in handwriting different from his. It was soft, feminine, and familiar. The notecards left him feeling empty, and he eventually put them away, with newly added tear stains.
Returning was harder than he thought, but he couldn't continue the cycle of grief. He had to continue pushing forward. Upon returning to class for the day, Dende greeted his roommate, hanging his messenger bag on his chair.
"Hey, how was class?"
"It was okay." He said sitting down in his desk chair. "Have you heard about the bar crawl?"
"Of course. Everyone's talking about it."
"We should go."
Chiaotzu looked over at his roommate. "You're joking right?"
Dende laughed a bit. "No, I want to go to the bar crawl with you. Bar hopping sounds fun."
Now Chiaotzu was putting aside his tablet to continue the conversation. "You, bar hopping? I couldn't imagine you going to multiple bars in one night."
"…Well maybe one would be enough for me. Multiple does sound a bit daunting." He muttered.
Chiaotzu snickered. "I knew it. We should go to at least one. I'm sure Tien will be around too, so I'm hoping we can ditch him to have a little more fun on our own." He pulled the covers off of him to hop out of bed and go to his wardrobe. "Do you know what you're going to wear?"
Dende nodded. "I have something to wear."
…
"When you said you had something to wear; I was hoping it wasn't a robe, but I am not disappointed. This is a work of art." Chiaotzu marveled.
Dende grinned. "Thanks, Mr. Popo made it for me." He said modeling for his roommate. He described his outfit. "All black robe with a satin lined cape. Classic collared neckline. Double layered ruffled cufflinks. An embroidered sash in the middle, and sheer sleeves."
"What are the sleeves made from? Chiffon?"
"Gossamer silk."
Chiaotzu's eyes widened. "I don't even think I have gossamer silk." He said, reaching out to feel his satin lined cape. "Is this the same robe you said you wouldn't 'waste on a party?'"
Dende laughed. "It is. This was made for my first day in ministry, but after almost being burned at the stake, this wouldn't have even been worn at my funeral. I don't want to waste it waiting on a perfect moment." He said and grabbed his new handkerchief off of his desk. "My brother told me that I should live a little before I start the rest of my life. I'm taking his advice seriously."
"I see. You dyed your handkerchief too."
"It's my brother Cargo's. He gave it to me."
"Oh I get it now. He's the cooler one."
Erasa and Videl stood together in the vanity mirror, getting ready to attend tonight's bar crawl.
"You haven't told him?"
Videl shook her head. "I haven't told him yet. I will eventually."
"Like, when your water breaks?"
Videl rolled her eyes. "No, I'll tell him before then. I want to tell him, but I don't know how he'll react. I don't want him to freak out, and I don't want him to be overbearing. Besides, I may be pregnant but I'm still young, and it's still early. I want to have a little fun before I'm waddling around like a penguin."
Erasa applied her lip gloss. "I can understand that. I wouldn't know how Gohan would react either. I would make sure he's sitting down when you tell him though."
Videl ran her fingers through her hair. "At the earliest, I want to tell him on our date Saturday. The latest is after the first trimester." The baby was healthy for now but she didn't want a stressful pregnancy. With her being prone to stress, she had to be careful. The first trimester would also give her the chance to acclimate to the experience on her own. She didn't want to tell Gohan until she was comfortable, confident, and ready for his support. "I just want to have fun. I think I deserve that."
The bar strip was bright and busy. The street was filled with students walking in and out of pubs, listening to the music pouring out from the bars into the streets. Food trucks and snack stands were busy with waiting students. Establishments advertised their promotions of cheap alcohol and open kitchens in neon lights. The atmosphere was light with students walking around with drinks in their hands and plates of food.
Any other night Dende would have been overstimulated from the bright lights and loud noises, but tonight he was prepared. He wore a borrowed pair of sunglasses from Chiaotzu, and he had ear plugs in his pocket. "Which bar do you want to go to?"
Chiaotzu looked around, hands in pockets. "Whichever has the best food. I'm already thinking about how good those chicken tenders will be when I'm drunk."
Dende looked around before pointing across the street. "What about there? The Lunchbox? I'd think a place with a name like that would have good food."
Chiaotzu looked over where Dende was pointing. "That says 'Launchbox.'" He corrected.
Dende pulled his sunglasses up to see. "Oh, it does. I couldn't tell in the glasses. Do you want to go?"
"Sure. There's no line to get in either. Let's go before there is one."
…
Dende and Chiaoztu sat at the bar counter. The dance floor had a thin crowd, and the music wasn't as loud as it could be. The night was still young, the bar would surely fill in due time.
Chiaotzu waved down the blonde haired bartender.
The bartender stopped in front of the two. "Make it snappy, I don't have all night." She demanded.
Chiaotzu seemed the first to take offense. "Well good evening to you as well. I thought all blondes were supposed to be polite."
"Not this one. Now hurry up."
Chiaotzu rolled his eyes. "Two wine coolers please. One watermelon and one kiwi." He ordered, muttering something under his breath as he pulled out his coin purse.
The blonde bartender pulled out their desired drinks, setting them down in front of them. "Here, try not to need me again." She took the Zeni he gave her before giving him the change. After the transaction, she was off serving other customers.
"She seemed tense." Dende said, taking his drink.
Chiaotzu twisted the top off of his drink. "'Tense' is nicer than what I was thinking, but at least we got our drinks." He wouldn't let some cranky blonde ruin his outing. "We should toast to a good night."
Dende nodded. "I have a toast I wanted to say."
"Okay."
They held out their glasses to each other, and Dende spoke. "Jesus turned water into wine,"
"Oh," Chiaotzu spoke disdainfully.
"…But tonight we're drinking wine like water."
"Oh," Chiaotzu repeated, now in surprise as they clinked their glasses together.
Dende spoke after his drink. "I heard a colleague say it in class today. I wanted to use it." He said with a laugh.
Chiaotzu shook his head. "I forgot to ask the bartender for a menu, but I don't want to ask Miss Cranky for one."
"I'll ask." Dende offered, looking down at the bar. He didn't see the blonde bartender but another one with dark blue hair. He got her attention, and with a smile, she made her way down the bar.
"Welcome to the Launchbox. What can I get started for you two?"
Chiaotzu hesitated. She looked just like the blonde, maybe she was a twin. "Do you have a food menu?"
"Of course!" She replied, pulling one out to hand to him. "Everything is half off tonight, please let me know if you'd like to place an order."
"Thanks." Chiaotzu said, looking over the menu. "You're a lot nicer than your twin." He commented.
The blue haired bartender laughed. "She's technically not a twin. It's a bit complicated, but in short, we're the same person. We're both Launch."
"Launch? You're the owner?" Dende asked.
"Mhmm," She nodded proudly. "I run the kitchen, and she runs the bar. We have a lot of fun doing it. The locals love us too; they get to choose who they want to tip." She said pointing to two blue and yellow tip boxes.
"Are you single?" Chiaotzu asked next.
Launch giggled. "You're adorable, but you're not exactly our type."
"I'm asking for a friend. He's going to be in town more, and could use some company."
Launch thought for a minute before noticing that she was being flagged down by another patron. "I'll have to talk it over with my counterpart later. In the meantime, there are virtual slot games, card tables, and pool tables in the back. Please enjoy." Launch then dismissed herself to help more customers.
Dende picked up his drink. "Wanna play some Blackjack with me?" While Dende was rather gifted with cards, and undefeated by his brother, Chiaotzu was different. He never won a game against Chiaotzu, yet he never lost either. Their games would always come to a draw. After finding out that Chiaotzu could read his mind, Dende figured that Chiaotzu was gifted with cards the same way he was.
Chiaotzu hopped off the barstool, drink in hand. Card games weren't his favorite hobby, but he was good at them, and Dende liked them. "I guess you're feeling lucky tonight, huh?"
Dende looked back at his friend led him to the back where they were directed. "I'm feeling more than lucky tonight Chiaotzu. I'm feeling hot tonight."
Chiaotzu smirked. "Well let's have some fun."
With a nod, Dende led Chiaotzu to an empty card table, and they sat.
"What are you playing tonight?" The table host asked.
"Blackjack please."
With a nod, the table host shuffled and dealt the cards. "First hand is for fun, second hand is open for bets."

Dende and Chiaotzu spent their time at the bar in a cycle. They would play a few games at the table, win a couple hundred Zeni, go get a drink from the bar, and repeat. Their winnings were starting to add up, as well as their drinks. The bar seemed to be in full swing now. The crowd started to thicken, and the music had gotten louder. It was even getting harder to push through the crowd. Nevertheless, they made their way back to the bar.
Chiaotzu climbed up the barstool, Dende sitting down next to him. "You know, I didn't count on us going out again after the first time, but I'm glad we're out again. I love that I get to share this time with you Dende." He said looking over at his roommate with a smile.
Dende looked back at his roommate, pulling out one of his ear plugs. "Did you say something Chiaotzu?"
Chiaotzu rolled his eyes. "Nothing. I'm just thinking about how different you are since your near death experience. You're way cooler now." He yelled over the music.
Dende giggled. "Well it turns out nearly dying is a real confidence booster." Like he mentioned, he didn't want to waste his second chance at life. Dende spent his life being good, now he wanted to know what it was like to spend it a little bad. So far he was enjoying it. He felt great, he looked great, he was drunk with his roommate, and he had a pocket full of Zeni. He couldn't complain.
Chiaotzu grabbed the menu he read over earlier. "I'm gonna order my food before I forget. You want something?"
"Just another round of drinks."
Meanwhile, outside the Launchbox stood Gohan and his friends. They had spent the evening bar hopping like everyone else, ordering a few drinks before they moved onto the next. The Launchbox was their fourth stop, but not their final. The night wasn't over yet, despite being more inebriated than they should have.
"Well if it isn't a few of my students enjoying a night on the town."
Gohan turned, finding the familiar door bouncer to be no one other than his current master. "Yamcha! You work here?" He greeted in surprise.
Yamcha nodded as he continued his work. "Yeah, I work here on busy nights like this. Hey Videl, hey Sahir. You guys having fun tonight?"
"Hey, we're having a great time. Good to see you." Videl greeted.
"Good to see you too. Be safe tonight, and drink some water in the morning. Hangovers are a killer in training." He advised with a laugh.
Sahir nodded at the advice. "See you tomorrow at Martial Arts Club Yamcha."
"See ya. Enjoy your time at the Launchbox."
With that the group of friends made their way inside the bar. The bar was packed with students dancing with drinks in their hands. Their first stop was at the bar for their next round of drinks. Gohan slid his way through the crowd to the front of the bar, Videl holding his hand beside him as they ordered. Before he could ask what she wanted to drink, he heard his name being called down the bar counter. He looked around, finding Dende and Chiaotzu waving at him.
Grinning, Gohan pushed his way through the crowd to see his friend.
Dende stood, wrapping his arms around him in a tight hug to greet his friend.
Instead of parting, they kept each other close to continue their conversation. Gohan kept his arms wrapped around his waist, and Dende kept his arms wrapped around his neck.
"I didn't expect to see you out tonight, but I'm glad I did. You look amazing."
Dende giggled. "Thank you. Everyone else was out tonight, I didn't want to miss out."
Gohan laughed as well. "Are you having fun?"
He nodded. "I made some Zeni in Blackjack, and I've been enjoying my time with Chiaotzu. What about you?"
"Oh yeah, I'm having a great time. We'll probably stop at a couple more bars before heading back."
"Okay, I'm glad I got to see you. Have fun and be safe."
Gohan seemed almost disappointed in Dende's response. "You didn't want to hang out while I was here? I was hoping we would."
Dende smiled. "Well, Chiaotzu and I are a little busy playing cards and drinking, but I think Videl and your friends are waiting on you, so I'll see you Sunday, okay?" He placed a gentle hand on his chest to pull away from him.
Gohan seemed to resist Dende's pulling before releasing him a moment later. "Right, I should get back. See you later." With that, he reluctantly made his way back to his friends.
Dende watched as he made his way back over to Videl. They spoke for a moment before she looked behind Gohan, waving politely from down the counter. Dende smiled slightly, waving back before turning back with a sigh.
"I'm surprised you didn't want to hang out with Gohan while he was here." Chiaotzu said, eating his chicken tenders.
Dende shrugged. "We spent the entire break together. He has Videl, and friends besides me, and I have you, Chiaotzu."
Chiaotzu smiled. "Good, I was having fun making money in Blackjack anyways. Wanna play some more after this?"
"Sure." He said and reached down in his pockets, pulling out multiple curled up Zeni bills to put on the counter. He hesitantly counted the eight thousand Zeni in his pocket. "Ah, on second thought, maybe we should call it a night on the Blackjack."
Chiaotzu groaned. "I knew your justice-driven consciousness would kick back in eventually. Do whatever you want with your winnings, but don't expect me to do the same with mine."
…
Instead of continuing the cycle of card games and drinking, they continued their drinking at the counter. Launch was good company whenever she had time to talk. Chiaotzu was even warming up to the blonde haired Launch. Dende couldn't believe the time he was having. The music was still loud past his ear plugs, but it didn't hurt his ears. He giggled, gossiped, and sang with his roommate for the remainder of the night. The alcohol was so warm in his body it kept his confidence and energy up to continue having a good time.
Oddly enough, he could feel Gohan staring at him from across the room. Every time he looked in the general direction, Gohan was already looking at him. Was Gohan upset with him? They didn't leave off a bad note, so that couldn't be the reason. Maybe he wanted to tell him something? If that was the case, he could have told him when he saw him. Dende shook off the thoughts. It didn't matter enough to him tonight. If he remembered tomorrow, he'd think about it tomorrow. Right now he was enjoying the last bit of the night with his roommate and friend.
Dende felt a tug at his sleeve.
"I'm getting sleepy, and I need to use the bathroom. You ready to go?"
Dende nodded and finished off his last drink for the night. "I'm ready. I wanted to get some water before we left, and to check and see if that fruit stand was still open outside." He said and began leading his small roommate through the thick crowd, to the bathroom in the back.
Gohan kept an eye on Dende during their time at the Launchbox. The robe he was wearing was fitting against his long slim figure, he couldn't look away. It was exciting seeing Dende out, but it was upsetting that he didn't want to hang out with him. He's been on Gohan's mind since he kissed his cheek on Sunday. He was hoping that he would change his mind, but Dende was too busy giggling and singing lyrics to Chiaotzu to even pay attention to him.
It was strange. Gohan's never craved Dende's attention the way he did tonight. He was almost jealous that he didn't have it. He just wanted a moment alone with Dende. Gohan just needed Dende to himself again.
Meanwhile, Videl had been well annoyed with Gohan. Before the Launchbox, she had his full attention. They were dancing and flirting the entire night. However, ever since they've been at the Launchbox, ever since he talked to Dende, Gohan was distracted. No amount of dancing with him, or dancing on him, could return his attention back to her. It made her jealous, and paranoid. It was exactly how she felt the first night she met Dende.
The only difference now was that she was completely sober, and she had no reason to think she was crazy.
Videl stopped her dancing and turned around to Gohan. "I don't want to keep dancing with you if you're this distracted."
Gohan looked down at Videl. "I'm not distracted, I was watching you dance."
"Gohan, you weren't even touching me—"
"I'll be right back." Without another word, Gohan pushed past Videl and walked off through the crowd.
Videl balled her fists up. She could have screamed. She didn't want to follow him, as she didn't care about where he was going. She just wanted validation. Videl pulled Erasa away from Sahir to speak with her privately.
Sahir watched as Videl leaned up to speak in Erasa's ear. Erasa pulled away in shock, and he read her lips. "Are you sure? Where did Gohan go?"
Videl nodded, and her hands pressed against her eyes, shaking her head. Erasa looked over at Sahir, but he was already looking at her. "Can you go find Gohan?"
…
Dende pushed the bathroom door open, sighing in relief when the music became silent. The bathroom was empty, giving them more than enough time to recover before taking their leave.
Chiaotzu closed himself in a bathroom stall. "I shouldn't be long, but the toilet is kinda high."
"I'm not helping you."
"I didn't ask you to!"
Dende rolled his eyes, catching a glimpse of himself in the mirror. "Would you hurry, please? I don't want to miss the fruit stand before it closes."
Dende ignored his roommate's mumbling by observing himself in the mirror further. He had to admit, he did look good going out tonight. The sunglasses may have been for sensory issues but they were a nice touch with the outfit. Gohan was right to say he looked amazing. The thought made him giggle, and he kept himself busy with dancing while he waited on Chiaotzu.
Dende swished around rhythmically in the mirror. What a great night. He enjoyed himself, and his friend Chiaotzu. Coming out tonight wasn't nearly as dreadful as he thought. He'd have a hard time waking up in the morning, but it didn't matter if all he could think about was fruit at the fruit stand outside. He thought about stopping by Gohan to let him know he was leaving, but with the way Gohan was staring at him for most of the night, he wasn't sure if he should or not.
Dende was so distracted by dancing in the mirror, he hadn't heard another patron enter the restroom. He screamed when he felt someone touch his arm.
"Dende—"
"I'm okay Chiaotzu." He assured quickly, still catching his breath. Dende pulled out his ear plugs, smiling. "I didn't hear you come in."
Gohan's smile grew. "I didn't mean to scare you. I liked watching you dance."
Dende leaned against the sink for support, laughing. "Thanks. I'm glad it was you, it would have been embarrassing if it were anyone else."
Gohan leaned against Dende, his breath lingering with alcohol. Dende was intoxicated, but surely Gohan had surpassed him. His hands sliding up his sides were a definite indicator. "I'm glad I ran into you tonight. I missed you this week."
Dende shivered against his touch. As much as he wanted him to continue stroking his sides, Dende put his hand against his chest to stop him. "I've missed you too Gohan, but I'm getting ready to leave with Chiaotzu so could you please—?"
"Can you keep a secret Dende?"
Dende pulled off his sunglasses. "Can I keep a secret?" He asked in near disbelief, stunned that he would ask such a question. Staring at Son Gohan without his sunglasses was a mistake. He could definitely tell how drunk he was now, but seeing that mischievous smirk on his flushed face was so attractive. Dende could feel himself melting against his touch, and giving in to curiosity. "What is it?"
Gohan leaned close to his face. "You look so cute tonight, I can't take my eyes off of you." He admitted before whispering, "I want you all to myself again."
Dende felt the urge to press their lips together. A confession like that was enough to jump in his arms and kiss him until someone pulled them apart, it was all he wanted to hear. However he knew that a confession like this was devastating. Gohan may not remember it tomorrow, and keeping something like this between them was too risqué.
Dende didn't want Gohan if it meant hurting Videl in the process.
Gohan moved his lips towards his. "Can I have you to myself just for a minute, please?" He asked, about to close the gap between them.
Dende felt another urge take over, and this time he acted on it.
"Videl's pregnant."
A/N I thought we were long overdue a party chapter, and I had plans on writing this one for this chapter for a while. It is a bit of a cliffy and I haven't started the next chap as of posting this bc as stated I've been busy trying to graduate. But after that I'll be on break from work the week after up until my bday so I'll have time to write then. The next chap will obviously have some blowback from the reveal so we'll have to see how it goes. Reviews are always appreciated. Until next chapter!
