AN: For those waiting, sorry for the long wait. This might become a monthly update now and then. Had been busy so far as I went on a small break. I am now back at it again with the release of 'The Big Guys - Bigger, Better, Badder' and a recent update on 'as hard as an obsidian rock'! Hope that you enjoy this chapter! I can confirm it's worth the wait. This chapter is longer than the last, that's for sure!
For those who are new, I'll be incorporating music into certain scenes through timestamps, taking inspiration from The Sensational SpiderDom321 and MarcellusMiro66. You'll see the song's title at the beginning of its particular scene and the following timestamps tell you which parts of the song play. It might not appear in every single chapter, however.
Chapter 2 - The Invita-Wait, No, The Interruption
[Rock N Roll Rules - HAIM & Ludwig Göransson]
[2:03]
Trollex wondered if he was too comfortable in his sitting place. There was only one butt that fit the throne chair on the Angler Bus. And he didn't really enjoy sitting on those dated leather couches. It was quite fitting to the hardcore rock lifestyle, but when it came to comfort while traveling, he preferred sitting on unwrinkled chairs rather than bumpy stairs.
[2:26]
But no, that wasn't what he was concentrating on. He wasn't pressing his folded fins too hard on his sitting spot. Maybe the strangeness might come from the interior of the Angler Bus. Everything was arguably made out of denim. Evident by the visible 'stains' on the walls, the multiple stitches and just the moodiness of the black material. The Rock Trolls probably loved staying this tough and it could shut Trollex down from this dark appearance.
Once again, it couldn't be that. Trollex has already grown used to watching dark or gritty art. The ocean could be scary at times. But the one thing that weirded him out was the song currently playing.
[2:34]
This was his fifth time listening to 'Rock N Roll Rules'. Barb used this song to lead her rock lackeys onto the Angler Bus. This was the one that got people moving. As the song was performed by one of the greatest Rock bands in the domain, everybody would use this one as a motivational morning boost.
But Beat was starting to feel bored by the second time and nearly dozed off. That was when Trollex realized something. Barb didn't see this, now sitting back on her throne chair with a too-comfortable smile.
[2:42]
Trollex was sitting on the stairs well-mannered, watching the Rock Trolls on board jump around and headbang to the repetitive song. Rock and roll rules. Rock and roll rules. Those words repeated in his ears, loud and clear. Nobody cared if it was playing too loudly. Only these words were printed on their frontal lobes.
His left ear twitched after finding himself thoroughly studying all of the guitar layers.
He didn't need to relisten to this song to enjoy it.
[2:53]
"WHAT IS THIS?!" he shrieked, utterly bewildered.
Barb opened her eyes. "Their favorite song! At least the majority of them like it."
Trollex gave her a look. "And so you have them listening to this all day?"
"Not really. The only surprising thing is that none of them made a request yet to change to another song." The longer she stared at Trollex's green eyes, she suddenly felt concerned. "Wait, are you alright with-"
"It's not a bad song," said Trollex quickly. "I'm just wondering why you're making it an earworm. It's the only song we're hearing now."
Barb grinned sheepishly. "OK, Mr. Wise Guy. Do you have any requests?"
"What's on your playlist?"
"Thing is, we didn't assort a playlist for today. We only have this song downloaded into the system before it disconnects from the wi-fi."
"And why didn't you think of making a list of songs to play from the speakers?"
"I got bored."
[End of Song]
A long flush could be heard from the left and Beat came hovering right out. This seemed to attract the Rock Trolls and at least three already booked it to the bathroom for their turn.
"Geez, lady!" said Beat, reaching Barb's throne chair. "Where's the white lighting option? I had to switch colors for the right adjustment and I think someone will need to clean it."
Trollex cringed. "Oof. Should have brought in a flashlight, buddy."
"We Rock Trolls can see through red and much as we can swim through lava," said Barb helpfully. "Now, quick, before I replay this song for the sixth time. Any requests?"
At first, Trollex wasn't sure what to play through the speakers because the only way to pick another rock song would be to turn them off and manually play the instruments. But they didn't want to spend too much energy on this long trip. However, an idea came to his mind. He leaned forward to Barb and whispered in her ear.
Eyes widening in interest, she nodded and once the song was over, she already turned off the speakers.
While so, Trollex pulled out his mini DJ set table, turned it on and briefly scrolled through the list of songs available. One song caught his interest. He smiled. It might not be exactly rock, but he knew this would be one for the bold and the daring. He let it play and leaned back, his hands behind his head.

When Barb returned to her throne chair, she heard a deep synth drop before the synthesis drums kicked in. The little robotic synths added in suddenly felt like an outer space adventure. She raised an eyebrow, leaning back. Already past with calling techno music 'beeps and boops', she wanted to see how listening to this one would make her feel.
Her fellow Rock Trolls stopped for a few seconds to listen to the instrumental song, curious and confused. They noted the huge noises that sounded like a bounce. Well, that was one word they used for this. Like making multiple hyperspace jumps from one end to another. A melodic trip, but not like the soft Pop. This one had a bouncy edge to it.
Trollex smiled when he saw the Rock Trolls laughing before resuming their headbanging. Others went to sit back and enjoy the ride with this exotic song. The Techno King grinned when he saw a few of them lifting their heads when they heard the percussion buildup. But when it got to the alarm noise made before the first buildup.
[0:28]
"Oooh, this track!" said Beat, literally sparkling in satisfaction as if diving into sugar. "That's a really good bop!"
Barb hummed, narrowing her eyes. She looked like she wanted glasses. Unfamiliar with the song, she was lagging behind at the intro. She closed her eyes and let the music guide her. The first thing that came to mind was this feeling about getting to riot. It wasn't produced from a guitar but more from things that would be hard to find unless you had a smartphone.
[0:44]
It was a run for the hill, climbing up that mountain. Every step taken matched the gradual thumps and buzzes added to the song. Ambition flooded deep to achieve a stage that would promise greatness. Barb smiled at her suddenly cheesy thoughts, but it felt like so. It felt really climatic and would make her feel like she was flying through the sky.
[1:00]
When the real drop came in (and not one manufactured by the playful Trollex), the bag of extra-flavorsome chips popped open and exploded in color. Barb found herself banging her fists against the armrests, feeling every beat. She imagined herself inside a crazy tornado, riding on those winds. It was thrilling. It was awesome.
At the halfway point, Barb opened her eyes and noticed they activated the spotlights in the Angler Bus. All the Rock Trolls were bouncing off the walls, bathing themselves in the flickering red lights. Despite the clear difference in sound, they all took the song in stride. Trollex was bobbing his head up and down, victorious.
Barb opened her mouth, only to lean back when a giddy Beat fluttered in front of her. She could practically feel the fish's squeal through these electric synths.
"You must really know us well," commented Barb with an earnest smile. "Is this a song usually played during one of your raves?"
"Not by me," admitted Trollex, shrugging cooly as Beat passed him. "I only play these songs when holding a very special occasion. This is just one of the hits composed by DJ Ebony, another member of the Electro House."
"Well, this one ain't pulling back. Surprised that this one could pull off a dance floor without words."
Trollex chuckled. "This could go the same way with just playing solo guitar. Though, tell me, does it fit for here?"
Barb shrugged. "Feels more like a night water slide, but it's an epic one. Maybe it feels too 'slick' or 'hip'. But each section feels different to one another in terms of the instruments used."
"Like it's experimental?" guessed Trollex correctly.
[1:15]
"You read my mind! Just a question: would lyrics work in this? I feel like maybe a bit of bragging at the start and then some kind of mantra during the…um…what's that part called…"
Trollex had a thought. "Ebony doesn't want vocals involved. She just wants to make it like a movie."
Barb raised an eyebrow. "Valid reason, then."
While Barb was all for having words in a song, perhaps it was good to not have any lyrics in this song if it was meant to let the powerhouse robots take the show. The Rock Queen felt good. From being picky in her musical tastes to growing to understand more of the different musical cultures. The Bounty Hunters did give her a headstart. Uniting all the tribes was the next step.
It helped that Trollex picked a song that could fit the looks of this bus. He didn't need to but he seemed to be looking for a good reaction from the other Rock Trolls. At least Barb had been listening to more of his tracks instead of being critical of song titles. This song's title was justified; it sounded 'radical' and executed in the right way.
[1:45 - End of Song]
The Angler Bus jolted and the Rock Trolls immediately came close to the windows to observe. Barb and Trollex glanced at each other, sharing a surprised grin. It was getting slower and slower like a slug smacked against the pavement.
They arrived.
And thus, the two didn't waste time to make a grand entrance.
Outside, the parked Angler Bus opened its mouth slowly, quite dramatically. A deep, fiery glow of red and orange poured out from the front entrance, emitting yellow smoke. The hole that would lead to the inside of a volcano and hot enough to steer people away from danger.
It would have been sinister on its own if it weren't for the rock guitar solo inside, becoming gradually louder.
The ripples from the building guitar strums were becoming intense, inciting a full-on performance from the inside. The smoke was becoming thicker and bigger, nearly enough to blind one's vision. And just before anyone could open their eyes…
BOOM!
Barb came jumping out from the explosion of orange sparkles, yellow streamers and purple fire following from her back. She landed right on the rough ground, but she was tough enough to handle her knees getting grazed. She slid across the ground, strumming her guitar at a rapid pace. A single reminder that this queen did not lose her edge in her performance.
As the yellow streamers hovered above her, she finally finished with a smash of her guitar.
"GOOD MORNING, YOU VALENTINES AND HEARTBREAKERS!" she announced, pointing a finger in the sky. "Queen Barb at your service!"
If you zoomed out, you would realize that Barb was doing an introduction performance for no one. Absolutely no one. Outside her fantasy, the Angler Bus only landed on a windy, sandy mountain. In the middle of the road.
Barb opened her eyes, expecting to hear a cheer. There was none. Her smile was frozen. Look to the left. Only more desert mountains. Look to the right. There were no souls except for one tumbleweed rolling by.
The Rock Queen deflated, cringing. "Dang it. We put in the wrong address, didn't we?"
Trollex peeked from the mouth of the bus, his curious eyes scanning the wasteland around them.
"Aww, so that means I won't get to use those square-shaped spotlights for the beat drop?" he asked.
"No," said Beat flatly, flying out from the bus. "There's too much light to make the laser show visible. But, buzz me! This place is neat!"
Barb frowned, rubbing her neck. "Too neat. I thought Bergen Town would be here."
"Did we stop a bit too early?" asked Trollex, coming out from the bus as well.
The Rock Queen tried looking behind the bus. When there wasn't a castle in sight, she sighed in weariness, frustrated.
"I think we might have only travelled halfway," she muttered, rubbing her face. She could rage, but she spent half her energy smashing her guitar.
The much more energetic Trollex looked over her shoulders and his ears perked upwards. "Oh! It's just right there!"
Beat and Barb turned around and the former's reaction was pretty justified.
"That…convenient," squeaked Beat, looking like he was in the middle of daydreaming.
In the distance stood a slightly mutely coloured town protected by a dark brick ring. It didn't look as happy or bright as the land around them, but that spot showed signs of life. Windows were opening, people could be seen walking through the brightened alleys and a mighty castle towered all the buildings, watching them proudly.
Barb tilted her head for her good ear to hear the distant noises. It sounded like singing. Not the usual screaming she was used to. Not the usual autotuned vocals Trollex was used to. It was loud, happy. Squinting their eyes, the trio could see colorful flowers from the windows, rainbow banners and pink heart balloons flying around.
Color was spreading throughout this muted town.
"...Lonesome Flats?" said Barb for no particular reason.
"No, it's not Lonesome Flats," deadpanned Trollex with a raised eyebrow. "The Pop Trolls are already here."
"We're missing out on the pre-wedding party already?" worried Beat.
Barb just smirked, confident. "Eh, we'll get there before the wedding starts, buddy boy. They seem to be getting ready to make confetti."
[Let's Get Married (Trolls Band Together) - Various Artists]
[1:01]
As if on cue, they could hear the voices of Branch and Poppy growing louder in the music.
Followed by a growing balloon in the shape of an uglier King Gristle.
The two young leaders and the sea fish watched in awe as the gigantic balloon detached itself from the unseen air pump, floating away. But no one expected the balloon to crash into a tower sticking out of the castle.
Yes, the falling dust and debris were all too real!
Beat's reaction was to squeal in fright, wiggling his antennas in flight mode.
Trollex's reaction was a petrified jaw drop, not liking this kind of action.
Barb's reaction was filled with laughter, her eyes burning in animated fire.
"Oh ho, ho, ho!" she barked happily. "Metal!"
Trollex gave her a look of pure concern and confusion.
And when she saw it, Barb quickly changed her tune. "Oh! Um, n-not too metal, dude! Y-Yeah, that's what I…" She trailed off, a sweat drop rolling down her face. "I'm still into this mayhem, sorry."
It probably reminded too much of the enjoyment she got out of destroying buildings, especially during the World Tour. That was when she believed everyone would be at war. Right now, nearly falling back into that habit made her guilty. Fortunately, she didn't need to hold the sheepish smile as Trollex turned away.
"We should get going to check on them," he said hurriedly, sweating.
That would be fair, thought Barb. "Alright then, dude. I'm sure they'll be fine."
"Oh, hey, guys!" said Beat, floating above their hands. "Do you need the streamers back in…?"
"Just leave them!"
[1:26 to 1:49]
And so, their trip inside Bergen Town was much quicker. Barb made sure to pilot the bus this time and they were able to land in a good parking spot. Made for Trolls, surprisingly! It would be silly, but Barb and Trollex were grateful that the Bergens made the place as hospitable as possible.
As they walked through town, the group was huddled up together with only Barb, Trollex and Beat taking the front without cowering. Sort of. It was nearly their first time walking through a giant's land.
Many giant Bergens were dancing around, choreographed yet fast. They seemed to be mindful of the Pop Trolls helping out arranging the decorations, but they didn't want to get stomped on by mistake.
Seeing these giant houses and towers made them feel out of place. At least the colorful decorations reminded them they would be safe on behalf of the Pop Trolls.
That being said, this would mean hearing the Pop songs playing all around from all voices. The Rock Trolls following Barb had their teeth gritted, their eyes twitching. Cooped up for too long in Volcano Rock City that they hadn't tolerated Pop yet.
The same verses repeated all over again with no meaning in them.
Barb grinned awkwardly, remembering that her fellow roadies weren't adjusted to Pop music. Only a slight bit of her felt annoyed. Maybe it would be just the harmless tone of the songs playing around. Fitted for a happy wedding, but maybe too happy.
One truly honest thing; the Bergens looked so happy, dancing around. There were no traces of their previous gloom. Utopia.
Barb smiled in admiration. These songs must be real to them and she felt it as well.
Trollex was chill with the music, rolling his hands around with Beat spinning in the middle. He loved the instrumentals more than the vocals, but these pop songs weren't too bad. He would prefer something more energetic, but this was good for a heartwarming party.
The group stopped when Barb noticed a rambling Tiny Diamond throwing his flower costume away to Guy Diamond's insistence of having the costume on. But in the middle of Tiny demanding to be treated like a man, a familiar bubbly voice broke through the air.
"C'mon, guys!" called Poppy. "It's time!"
[Pause at 2:26]
Guy Diamond was about to say something, but Tiny immediately got distracted by a few floating balloons. Barb, Trollex and Beat were coming close, getting to see the annoyed look from the naked glitter troll before he shrugged and packed his things nearby. Poppy was still hanging around and she gasped in glee when she saw the two dressed leaders.
"Barb! Trollex!" she squealed, rushing forwards. "You made it!"
As always, her first response was a bear hug. Barb's and Trollex's eyes widened, their bodies lifted up in the air. Then, Barb began laughing in affection before trying to wrap her arms around Poppy.
Meanwhile, Trollex just sighed resignedly while hearing the safe Beat snickering. It didn't help that the watching Rock Trolls were whispering to each other about Trollex's lost dignity.
"OK! OK!" said Trollex, wiggling out from Poppy's grip. "You two can have the hug."
"Suit yourself," teased Barb with a wink. She turned back to Poppy, putting her arm around her back. "Good to see you again, Popsqueak."
"How's it rocking, my dude?" remarked Poppy. One couldn't imagine her joy to see Barb in the flesh again. The last time she saw her, she was a little worried as Barb was tired. Now, it seemed like Barb managed to regain her energy. Words couldn't describe how perfect today was going. "You look really good in this! Is that Detla's badge on your coat?"
Barb released from the embrace and made a heartful laugh. "Nah, just a special thing I picked up during one of their festivals." Feeling really proud of her jacket, she grabbed a fistful and shook it around. The clinging of the badges was music to her ears. "Had to come in with the right body and the right mind."
Knowing that Trollex was nearby, Poppy turned to him with a friendly grin and reached out her two arms. However, when the Techno King reflexively crossed his arms in discomfort, Poppy was quick to remember.
"Oh, sorry," she said sheepishly. "Forgot that you're not that much of a hugger." She briefly glanced at Barb, seeking advice. "Was that too much?"
"No, all good," reassured Barb gently.
Trollex smiled slightly in gratitude. As colorful as he could be, he wasn't really fond of the 'Hug Time' tradition the Pop Trolls carried. Barb handled it well, surprisingly. Maybe Trollex wasn't up for close, mushy contact.
He quickly observed Poppy's outfit. She switched her crown headband with a teal woven headband carrying colorful pompoms. Her dress was more casual, carrying the green and blue colors she wore regularly. For some reason, Trollex felt hungry when he saw her cotton candy skirt, its light pink color matching the streaks in her ponytail.
The social expert Trollex looked back down at his outfit. Beat smirked. Trollex DID say he wanted to look fancy enough for the wedding reception.
"I'm feeling like we missed out on the dressing code," said Trollex.
Barb snorted, rolling her eyes. Trollex could be too kind to fit in.
Poppy was more cordial. "Nah, it's all good! In fact, everyone is wearing their best! I like the shirt!"
The comment elevated Trollex and he couldn't help flexing his rainbow arms again. "Thanks!"
"Love that little bowtie as well, TBBT!"
Beat beamed brightly. "Aww, shucks! It's the best I could find for this!"
There was a slight rumble and Poppy suddenly leapt to the side to let a Bergen pass by, pushing a dessert wheelie table. This seemed to attract Barb's posse, as the second they saw it, they immediately ran off to chase after the sweet cakes. Barb could only smile, already glad her lackeys were starting to have a good time already.
Desserts are one thing the Pop and Rock Trolls love.
"Looks like the wedding will start soon!" said Poppy. "Meet you all there soon! That means you as well, Guy Diamond!"
[Resume at 1:49]
Guy Diamond didn't notice until Poppy skipped away. He was in the middle of packing his stuff when he was left alone with observant Barb and Trollex. Once he could confirm that he was ready, the naked glitter troll twirled around and started to make his move. But as the two young leaders followed, all would notice that Guy wasn't really smiling that much.
Admittingly, Guy Diamond was a stranger to them. A face in the Snack Pack. Only information they could get out from him was that he seemed like a showoff. Other stuff included him being the most action-packed right next to Branch, but that could be an informed attribute. It was Barb's, Trollex's and Beat's first time seeing an emotion from him.
Barb was one for earning trust to form friendships, but it didn't mean she would leave out checking on people. "Dude, you're OK?
Guy Diamond only stared far and long, spotting his child bouncing around on the buffet table. A smile of admiration crossed over him, proud to see Tiny trying to touch these balloons from above.
"Kids," chuckled Guy. "They grow up so fast."
"He must have got all that determination to be something greater from you," said Beat, tilting his body in curiosity.
Guy nodded, but he wasn't happy about this. "Perhaps so. I wonder why he's acting like this now. I've given him everything he needs. That's how I roll with the crowd. What should I really do? What does he want?"
"A wife," deadpanned Trollex.
This earned a wheeze from Beat before the fish spun around in an endless giggle. Barb immediately placed a hand over her wiggling lips, noticing the stunned look on Guy's face.
"Trollex!" hissed Barb.
Guy Diamond huffed. "A dog would make a better alternative as a significant other."
"Take it easy, elevator boy," instructed Barb, wrapping her arm around the glitter troll's neck. Guy flinched at the gesture, only standing on one foot, yet watched attentively. "Just watch him run free and then you'll be there to pick him up when he tires out. I've seen this with many babies. Soon enough, they'll be complaining that they need help."
Guy Diamond raised an inquisitive eyebrow at Barb. Even though he was a little timid around her, he had his boundaries over what would work or not. Letting Tiny run free? Well, at least Guy could be watching him closely. But the bad thing was Guy might not be on time to rescue Tiny from anything.
Guy always held an instinct to protect his friends. He shouldn't stay on the side.
"You're sure?" he asked.
Barb only grinned optimistically. "Trust me! It always works!"
It was a tad too optimistic for Guy Diamond. But being given such foreign royal advice sounded quite good. Surprisingly. That could teach Tiny to slow down. He turned to Trollex, wondering if the Techno King would agree.
"Don't look at me," said Trollex. "I'm just the second flower boy."
In all honesty, Trollex had no idea how to handle children. Technically, he did, but he wasn't at the stage of being a parent. Not a king.
Guy Diamond might be the only one alone in this. "Oh well. Thank you, Barb."
"No problem," said Barb, winking.
[2:15 to 2:26]
Upon reaching the wedding seats, the rest of the musical number was quite the show. Stunning to Trollex. Cute to Barb. Either way, they could see the Pop Trolls' positive influence on the Bergens. A few things looked like they weren't entirely in place, but in their song, they managed to get everything complete, everyone at their seats and a show to get Bridge and Gristle ready at the alter.
Barb and Trollex didn't participate, but they watched the show in full effect. Well, Beat flew near the glow bugs to get a closer look. Who knew these sweet melodies would fit well with the colors in the sky and the umbrellas pointing up to the flying angel? It lifted their moods, promising a sweet wedding to enjoy.
The Rock Trolls already seated didn't seem too pleased to have these earworms around. Barb would have also found it questionable. But the Bergens didn't seem to mind, enjoying the acoustic beats. That spoke volume to her.
As the wedding was about to begin, Barb and Trollex were greeted by Prince D, who was grooving along with his brother. It was short, but Trollex glowed more vibrant than before and shared an estactic fist bump with him.
Given that both Trollex and Prince D were young, it was natural they would end up becoming brothers to one another.
Eventually, Beat returned and got all to hush as the bride arrived from the sky. Barb and Trollex gaped before sharing a surprised look with each other. They didn't expect Bridge to be covered in THIS many balloons. It actually looked cool as a wedding dress. But one question they had would be how she could move around in that.
[End of Song]
When they turned to see Gristle's awed look before glancing back at Bridget's smile, it reassured them that it wouldn't be a problem. Moreso when Bridget looked like she could spill tears of joy as Poppy hopped onto her shoulder.
"You look so beautiful!" squealed Poppy.
"Thank you so much for being my maid of honor," whispered Bridget with rosy cheeks. "I couldn't have done this without you."
"Oh, of course, Bridget! I love you like a sister." And in this moment, Poppy hugged the side of Bridget's face, nuzzling a little like a loyal puppy. "You go get him, girl! Before I do…"
What everyone didn't expect was the Pop Queen pulling out a sharp pin. It turned out that the balloon dress was the first outfit. When Poppy burst those balloons, they created quite a surprise! Starting with an enormous amount of glitter bursting from the balloons popped.
Prince D giggled as he felt some coating his nose.
Beat yelped and hid behind the giant headrest of a chair.
Barb and Trollex were unlucky, covered from head to toe.
Trollex grunted, immediately trying to wipe the glitter off his body. "I just washed this vest last night…"
Barb was also annoyed, but unlike the first time, her temper was surprisingly low. She frowned, staring at the glitter coating her right arm. Then, an idea came to mind.
She licked her lips.
She spat it out.
Wasn't the glitter tasty in Pop Village?
It now tasted like pencil shavings.
Already desensitized to how often she got coated in this, Barb shrugged with a weary look and wiped the glitter off her lips. As Bridget rolled by, Trollex threw a white cloth to the Rock Queen's face.
"It's alright, Trollex," muttered Barb, her voice muffled from the cloth. "I can clean myself."
"Just in case," whispered Trollex, shaking his hair.
He didn't see it, but Barb smiled in gratitude before using the cloth to wipe the glitter off. As she did so, she noticed the actual wedding outfit Bridget had picked for the occasion. Surprisingly casual and stunning. She liked the white, glittery pants more. It helped that it allowed the rollerskate-riding Bridge to ride across the altar.
All grew silent when the wedding minister stepped up to the altar.
"Dearly beloved," she said calmly. We are gathered here today to witness the sweet, holy matrimony of Bridget…"
She stopped to take a moment to compliment Bridget's dress.
"...and Mr. Yummy Tummy himself, King Gristle."
Another pause to rub the grinning Gristle on the head.
"Now, falling in love is easy. We've all done it. I've done it a hundred times." The minister chuckled, looking mischievous. "Thousands, even, if you count that semester I spent abroad. You could say the same thing as well and that's no harm. Love can be complicated, but it's not always something to be ashamed of."
There were a few murmurs of agreement from the Bergens.
"Do you remember when your first love got you into great success, Bernice?" the minister asked, pointing to one in the crowd.
The mentioned Bernice nodded with a proud and loving smile.
"And the many hearts you paid attention to, Groth? I knew the foreshadowing from when I hosted your first wedding."
"And my fifth," joked Groth with a smile of self-deprecation. That earned a chuckle from the crowd.
"But today, it's a little special." The minister knelt down a little, her comforting hands on Bridget's and Gristle's shoulders. The two didn't mind, only staring at each other adorably. "Not only about love but also from the eternal happiness Bridget and Gristle found and inspired from the beginning. Young love is rather quick. And painful. And even deathly dangerous."
Just nearby, Beat noticed Branch rolling his eyes at that comment.
Bridget and Gristle only chuckled with an 'oh, you' look at their minister.
"However, these young lovers stood by each other through and through. And as a beautiful queen once said, 'true happiness is possible'. We're all here to honor and celebrate these two, some of the few who inspired the town to move forward. A symbol of a brighter future!" The minister couldn't give another joke. "If you can handle the burden."
Gristle's reaction was a coy smirk. "Please. Don't be so cynical. I think it's easy."
"Yep, hon!" agreed Bridget. "You know it."
Barb noticed Bridget glancing at Poppy with a grateful look. She couldn't see the look on the Pop Queen's face, but the Rock Queen could imagine her feeling proud. And being the Bergens' friend for so long, Barb admired Poppy's sheer kindness and determination in bringing happiness. A leader always looks out for everyone, after all.
Barb felt a little envious. How did Poppy manage to work that hard to receive this harmonious result? It couldn't be easy. Barb paused right there. OK, maybe it was just in her eyes and she wasn't feeling it. But it seemed too easy for Poppy since everybody liked her genuinely.
Speaking of liking her genuinely, Barb noticed Branch's soft and tender gaze at Poppy's eyes. A genuine smile on his face, admiring. He was there when Poppy helped the Bergens out of their darkest moments.
And since they were at a wedding, an update came to mind that she wanted to share.
"Hey, hey, Trollex!" she whispered, pinching Trollex's ear.
"What?" said Trollex, turning to her without fuss.
"Boy toy still has eyes for Popsqueak," commented Barb with a matter-of-fact look. "Relationship's steady?"
Trollex smirked a little, knowingly. "Like you wouldn't believe. It's kind of nice that Poppy is taking some baby steps."
But when he looked back at Poppy, a worry stirred in his mind. It was no lie that he had seen her grow ever since he met her. But he knew that she got herself into trouble during the World Tour. Too many times. Biggie's words rang in his ears. And while he wasn't there to see it, he reflected on Branch's and Poppy's argument after leaving Vibe City.
He frowned, fearful. Even though everybody was now all cool and chill, he knew it would remain a scar on Branch. He felt bad for him. And in a way, Trollex felt bad that a few of his folks were slow to take his word. To be fair, Trollex didn't acknowledge that much, with only Trollzart comforting Branch the most. But knowing Branch was closer to Poppy…
Prince D, who had only heard a few words from their conversation, saw Trollex's worried look. He didn't need to, but he stepped forward, leaned down and whispered gently.
"You know she realized what she did wrong," he said. "Pop still got a lot to learn and yearn."
Trollex flinched. A reminder of not wanting to look pitiful. But he chose to close his eyes only to regain his thoughts. "I know. Just looking out for Branch. I can't forget."
"Don't worry, man," said Prince D. "If what Cooper told me is true, those two will be on their way."
Barb nodded, understanding. "I hope so. Popsqueak is still growing. Had some trouble with TrollsTopia."
"Well, if they bite the dust, you'll be her maid for honor," said Prince D, trying to lighten the mood.
Barb laughed a little. "I can't imagine myself in another dress."
"I could offer you one," said Prince D, ruffling his fur.
This earned a chuckle from Trollex, his green eyes no longer dull in worry. "You mean your tinsel and fur?"
"Depends on the razor," joked Prince D.
Branch suddenly gave them a sharp look. "You three, shut up."
All three young leaders uttered a 'Yes, Branch' in unison. With different moods. Prince D said it with a humble look, being the charming prince himself. Trollex tensed up before speaking with a sheepish, giggling look. Barb probably said it with a lazy, bratty composure, wanting to point out that they were whispering REALLY quietly.
"If there is anybody here who knows why these two should not be joined in holy matrimony," the minister continued. "Let them speak now or forever hold their peace."
There was hushed silence across the venue.
"Run for it, Bridget!" encouraged Aunt Smead. "By the tongue!"
The floodgates opened and everybody was suddenly chanting 'KISS' many times. The Pop Trolls joined as well. The Rock Trolls did. Barb did. Trollex watched in surprise. They must be THIS eager to see the juicy stuff.
"OK! OK!" said the minister, surprised. "What a spectacular agreement. If there is nobody here who objects, then we may proceed. I announce you husband and-"
"STOP THE WEDDING!" shouted a shrill voice.
There was a collective intake of breath from the assembled crowd. All turned up to find a new-looking Pop Troll on a rooftop. He looked like an adventurer, a hiker. Wearing similar colors to Branch's casual clothes. He also appeared much bulkier than the other Pop Trolls, ready for danger.
Reinforcing that look was him taking a dive from the roof, sliding down a laundry wire and using his hair to leap over to the front row chairs. Where the leaders and the Snack Pack were at. Nearly everyone forgot about the wedding, including Gristle and Bridget nearly leaning close to try to get a good peek and listen.
"Sorry, is this bad timing?" said the new troll.
Trollex raised his eyebrows. "Duh."
His look saying 'read the room' prompted the stranger to notice the crowd watching.
"Oh, my apologies," he said, shrugging casually. "I'm just trying to find a troll named…" When he noticed the gaping Branch staring at him in disbelief, he immediately rushed up to him. "Baby Branch!"
Branch clenched his teeth, narrowing his eyes. "Uh…you're…making a mistake, stranger that looks similar to me. There's no Branch here!"
The stranger, walking over to him, wasn't convinced easily. Barb and Trollex came a little closer as the new guy observed Branch's adult body in what could be said to be brotherly admiration. It spurred more questions when he picked the insisting Branch and threw him high above.
Immediately, Trollex hovered upwards and grabbed Branch on the first throw.
"OK, that's enough!" the Techno King said firmly, gently putting Branch back on the ground.
"Thank you," exhaled Branch in relief.
"Yeah, tell us who you are and what you want," demanded Poppy, her hands on her hips.
The stranger didn't seem to notice her presence, jumping a little when she saw her. "Oh! You're right. Princess…Poppy?"
"Queen," corrected King Peppy from behind.
"Ah, yes," said the stranger, clicking his tongue. "Totally rude of me. Didn't introduce myself. I'm Branch's brother."
The casual reveal got everyone gasping and clamoring.
"What?!" exclaimed Poppy.
Prince D looked excited. "Branch has a long-lost brother like I do?"
"Think he does!" said Cooper.
"I'm so confused…" muttered Beat.
Barb and Trollex glanced at each other. Branch? Brothers? But he didn't say he had any brothers, nor did he have any remaining family around. Was this even true?
"Correction: Used to be my brother," clarified Branch bitterly. "Not anymore."
Poppy turned back around to him, trying to process this information. "Hey, um, remember earlier when I said you should open up to me and be real?"
"Well-"
"You could've started by telling me you had a secret brother!" squeaked Poppy with a grin.
"Former brother," spat Branch, not bothering to look at his brother.
"That's not how DNA works!" exasperated Poppy. Trying to pick up more, she turned to her father. "Dad, did you know about this?"
King Peppy narrowed his eyes with a thoughtful look. "Not really. Come to think of it, we had it messy when we moved to Pop Forest. It was chaotic when we were rebuilding our society systems. I couldn't find Branch's other family relatives and by the time he built that bunker, he basically made his past unknown…"
It was clear he was trying to not guilt-trip the observing and astonished Bergens at this revelation. Nevertheless, Barb noticed Gristle biting his bottom lip. He knew too well what went wrong. All these Pop Trolls had to abandon everything when fleeing Bergen Town long ago. Their previous homes that brought them safety, even if the peace wasn't sought.
Barb took a moment to look back at the old Troll Tree. Colorful but outdated in vines and faded pods. A quick remembering on the Pop Trolls caged by these Bergens…
Her eyes widened in alarmed realization, putting things together. Before, she had been annoyed by the Pop Trolls' apparent obliviousness to their history. And then, looking at this, it was more complicated. Their books would have faded out lately.
"OK, I'll give credit to the Pop Trolls for not being totally prepared from the tra-"
This earned an elbow nudge from Prince D. Now's not the time to be condescending.
Still jittery in energy, Poppy turned back to Branch's brother. "Oh my gosh! I was being so rude. I've never met anyone from Branch's family before! Properly, I'm Poppy, Branch's girlfriend. Should we hug, fistbump, smile and wave for now and see where the night takes us?"
The newcomer smirked, his deep voice giving a slight charm that could send chills into people's spines. "All of the above."
"Wait, I know you…" said Poppy, getting jumpy. "You're the guy from BroZone! Me and Branch were just listening to them."
"Yeah, BroZone!" commented Cooper.
However, nearly two-thirds of the attending visitors looked confused. Barb elbowed Trollex, but the latter only lifted his hands to say he didn't know. Beat scratched the top of his head, clueless.
"What is BroZone?" asked Bridget, curious.
"Yeah, what is that?" wondered Prince D.
"A very, VERY popular boy band!" piped up DJ Suki. "Their career was small, but they got the best hits! Affectionate for the young, iconic in the Pop scene! Timeless, dude."
"Wait!" said Guy Diamond, raising his hand. "Which one were you, Mr. New Guy?"
"Okay, well, you're obviously not the heartthrob," rationalized Poppy.
The newcomer looked taken aback. "That's your opinion. I-"
"The fun one? No, you look uptight."
"Uptight?"
Branch, in the background, gave a 'kinda' gesture.
"Hmm. You don't look too cute to be the sensitive one…"
"Okay, a lot of assumptions for someone you just met 30 seconds ago," snarked the stranger.
Poppy's face brightened up. "I've got it! You're John Dory!"
"The leader-"
"The old one!"
This earned a choir of snickers from everyone behind Poppy. Even Barb and Trollex, trying to contain their laughter. Beat laughed loudly, resting against Trollex's shoulder in thought he might fall down accidentally.
Even Branch found that amusing, his eyebrows raised. "That's one way to put it."
"Uh, sorry to interrupt," informed Gristle. "But we lose the venue at-"
"It's OK. It's OK." reassured Bridget, patting Gristle on the shoulder gently. "I want to listen as well."
"Let me get this straight," said DJ Suki, crossing her arms. "If you're Branch's bro, then all the other BroZone bros are Branch's bros too, right?"
Poppy whipped back to Branch, stars in her eyes. "Branch, how come you never told me?"
Branch grunted. "Because it's complicated."
"Because you weren't in it?" asked Prince D.
"Wait, I do recognize the hair color from…" started Satin and Chenille in unison.
Barb rubbed her chin. "Hold on. I know his recording career. Wasn't he a part of Kis-?"
She cut herself off when she saw Branch's hardened glare at her. And instead of feeling intimidated, the Rock Queen was suddenly concerned. She opened her mouth, but Branch slowly shook his head. His eyes slowly drifted back to John Dory. Barb shut her lips. Something must be up about this.
"Branch was in the band alright," John confirmed.
"Which one was he?" asked Smidge.
"Bitty B."
"Bitty B?" said Poppy. "Bitty B had glasses!"
"Oh, and a diaper," teased John with a smirk.
"And a falsetto made of gold," singsong Branch mockingly. His faux grin turned into a snarl. "Not that anyone cared. But that's all in the past. Because they stopped being my brothers the day they walked out on me and never came back!"
John Dory was alarmed, putting his hands up in defense. "Whoa, whoa, whoa! That's not fair, Branch."
"Then why did you come in now?" asked Satin.
"How long were you even out there?" followed up Chenille.
"I did come back, but no one was there. It wasn't until I heard about you saving the world from the rock apocalypse that I realized you were still alive."
Trollex and Beat glanced at Barb, wanting to see if there was a reaction. However, Barb gave a tired nod of acknowledgement as if saying 'touche'.
It didn't make Branch feel better. "He realized I was still alive. TWENTY YEARS TOO LATE!"
Before things could get ugly, Poppy stepped in front of Branch. "Hey! Hey! Easy." She gave John Dory an apologetic look. "Sorry. He gets hangry if he skips breakfast."
"I had breakfast. It was avocado toast with two poached eggs, some cayenne for a little kick. And you know what? It was delightful!"
Poppy turned Branch around to face her. "Branch, what's going on with you?"
"The question we should be asking is, what's going on with him?" growled Branch. "Bet he's only here because he needs something from me."
"That's not true. He's your brother!"
"Branch, I'm gonna be straight with you," said John Dory, suddenly serious. "I need something."
"And there it is."
"C'mon, man!" exclaimed Poppy. "I'm trying here."
The drawn-out conversation seemed to get to Trollex and the social Techno King decided to get himself in the middle. Literally. Flew from above before landing in between Poppy and John Dory to try to help cool things off.
"There goes his bargaining side," said Beat flatly.
"Bargaining?" asked Barb.
"Hold on, hold on, ladies," said Trollex, his hands high enough to create some good distance between the two tired parties. Then, he turned to John Dory with a slight glare of distrust. Just because he only met him didn't mean he couldn't downplay what he and Branch imply. "John Dory, the 'Old One', put the record straight on why you're here. In long story short."
The professional approach to this surprised John Dory. Especially the calm tone Trollex adopted. Seeing his friend in front, Branch relaxed a little with only his arms crossed. Noticing how things were quiet, John Dory took the time to choose his next words wisely.
There was a crack in his toughened expression. "It's about Floyd. He's…" He hesitated for a while, glancing at Branch. "...in danger."
That was suddenly enough for Branch's anger to mitigate, his blue eyes softening in worry. "What?"
"I hadn't heard from him since the band broke up. I got a letter from him." John Dory cleared his throat, imitating Floyd's soft and younger voice. "'Held against my will by superstars Velvet and Veneer. Come to Mount Rageous at once and bring our brothers.' I didn't know where any of you were, so I went to Mount Rageous alone."
Another air of gasps from the crowd, many familiar with the place. Gristle and Bridget turned to each other, surprised.
"Mount Rageous!" exclaimed Bridget.
"Oh my gosh!" said Gristle, shaking Bridget a little. "The place for the youth."
A few others, Poppy and Trollex, were confused by this. Mount Rageous? Was that a thing? But when they saw the lack of confusion from Branch and the hyped Barb, that told them of a land they had never heard of before or chose not to look into.
If anything, Branch's eyes and mouth widened in horrified realization. His voice was dead serious, near-catatonic. "Floyd was supposed to perform there."
John Dory was flabbergasted. "You knew?"
Barb stepped in. "Hold on, you said 'Mount Rageous'. Right, dude?"
"Um, yeah. The craziest place I've ever seen in my place."
"You know that place as well?" asked Poppy.
Barb broke into a cheerful grin. "Yes! I went there before! A month before my coronation, dude! I was having a research trip when trying to learn the other tribes." To confirm this, the silent Rock Trolls watching all gave nods. "A huge combination of Pop, Rock and Funk, but an emphasis on Pop. Some of their music wasn't my taste, but they still…hit? Slay? I don't remember the term."
"Slay sounds a lot better," said Trollex, nodding slowly. "Did you see these 'superstars' there?"
"I don't think I even know about Velvet and Veneer. But there were a LOT of rising pop stars. Like, by golly, they were worshiped like gods. I'm not joking! It was all up in the sky! Night Star, Mr. Lotus, Pigeon MacGriffith…" She threw her hands in the air. "Even the freaking K-Pop Gang received lifelong gold just by producing the best electropop hit! It's like arcade heaven!"
"Sounds like my trip, girl!" cooed Poppy.
"And it is always night," added Bridget, fretful. "It's really wild. You were able to brave through that, Queen Barbara?"
"I wasn't totally unprepared," said Barb with a cocky smirk. "Drank a lot at their bars, driven their bumper cars, voting for which song deserves to be on the top. A good time to get loose. Only a shame that they were fixated more on the throwback era. What I don't get is why Floyd was there…"
Branch's response was straightforward. "He was gonna find inspiration there. The last message he sent to me was two months ago, promising a show. He knew the one place outrageous enough to describe the challenges in the world. The show he would have done would be dedicated to me. And then, he didn't…"
It felt like it was self-explanatory. Branch closed his eyes, guilty. Nobody knew what was going through his mind.
John Dory was confused. Did Branch know Floyd would be captured at Mount Rageous? Where did he hear from him? Then, another thought came to John Dory's mind: How does Branch feel about this situation?
"I found where this Velvet and Veneer were performing that night," John Dory continued. "I investigated their recording room and then, there was Floyd. In this purple perfume bottle made of diamond. They're using it to steal his talent. His voice for THEIR voices."
Everybody looked worried. Branch shuffled his feet, uncomfortable. Now, that would explain why he didn't hear from Floyd for a long time. Even if life got in his way.
Barb scowled immediately, already disgusted. Knowing what she had done the last time, history was repeating itself again. And yet, she thought every popstar in Mount Rageous was at least genuine in their art. How far would any of them go with sucking the life out of someone to receive 'talent'?
Poppy leaned forward, suddenly interested. "Diamond, you say?"
"Wait, what kind of diamond?" asked Barb.
"These purple diamonds are known to be Heatbeat Diamonds," filled in Trollex. "But we just call them diamonds for short. One of the most indestructible-"
"And one of the deadliest," finished Poppy, her fingers twitching in anxiousness. "You have enough, you can use it to suck and absorb the essence out of a person!"
John Dory was surprised, but then again, the past few days were filled with surprises. "How do you know about this?"
"A couple of Chanty Trolls found the diamonds before we found music," explained Poppy. "They were used for magical rituals before they came short in supply. No one knows what happened to the rest, but it seems that Velvet and Veneer got their hands on them."
Trollex turned to her, confused. "Wait, wasn't the gradual shortage of those diamonds due to a 'shattering in the multiverse'?"
Poppy shook her head. "I thought it came from transporting themselves and their hosts into the darkest pits of a place called 'Hell', but that's just a theory. Nowadays, they could only be found through black markets or wizards."
"But there's one way to truly shatter it: the Perfect Family Harmony!" said John Dory, clenching a fist in determination. "Which is why I came back here, collecting all my brothers, for this."
There were a few mutters and oohs from the crowd. Even the Rock Trolls looked somewhat impressed. Nothing could break through the Heartbeat Diamonds except the Perfect Family Harmony. A special power gained from the closest links of family relatives. How could it be activated? Nobody knows. But it happened many times before.
And it was powerful enough to warp its energy on these diamonds. Not only to shatter them but to expel any effects of the diamonds before they grew worse.
Branch, however, felt something different than hope. "So we can attempt to sing something we've only tried ONCE. Something we failed so miserably that we gave up. And never talked to each other again."
Poppy nearly failed to listen to that. The weight of saving one Pop Troll before he could be vanquished from the surface of the earth became a mission she wanted to do. No Troll left behind! And even though Branch seemed reluctant, her good heart told her she couldn't leave Floyd in the dumps.
If Branch had some surviving family, he might not hurt anymore if he got them all back!
"I'm in!" she piped up.
Barb briefly gazed at Poppy, surprised. But then, she nodded, impressed. That's the kind of spirit she would want to see from a good queen. The Rock Queen was about to second that when Branch immediately hesitated.
"What?" he sputtered. Demeaned, he turned back to his brother. "Uh…could you give us a second?"
Poppy nodded before deciding to handle the big crowd first. "OK, everyone! It's OK! The situation is under control! Resume wedding!"
Bridget and Gristle were shocked, already deep into this new adventure. But when they saw Poppy's reassuring look, they nodded gratefully before looking back at each other. With the danger told to be handled, all the wedding guests and hosts resumed the occasion.
The wedding minister looked more than happy to continue. "Alright…well, that was kind of awkward. And with no objections, I now pronounce you husband and wife!"
AN: We'll have to cut right there, unfortunately. Don't want to make it too long.
So many adjustments made compared to the film. The latest instance is Bridget and Gristle actually resuming their wedding instead of waiting until the end. I think that would give Branch the comfort of not many people watching them and John Dory wouldn't hear this through all the noise.
Yep! 'Rock N Roll Rules' returns to the scene! It should be good to have it here in this story…for the wrong reasons, lol. Trollex would have lost his mind with its repetitive choruses if he didn't call to switch songs. It wasn't easy to describe how listening to 'Radical' feels. Apologies if it doesn't look good.
As you can see, I expanded a little surrounding Guy Diamond and his son's wants to be treated like a man. I thought shifting the spotlight onto him would be interesting, especially using him as a delegate of the Pop Trolls interacting with Barb and Trollex. We'll actually be seeing more from Guy Diamond really soon. :3
As mentioned before, I'm not a big of the film's jokes. Naturally, the wedding scene is rewritten. I wasn't sure how it would go, but I found some good ways to keep the party going.
The wedding minister, actually named Miss Maxine, was a comic relief but I feel there was some wasted potential on her VA (RuPaul). I dug really deep into her speech, finding ways to make it wholesome and relatable while still jokeful and a little sassy. I actually took inspiration from a scene in 'Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga' which helps with highlighting the importance of love and the marriage between Bridget and Gristle.
Don't worry. They can handle the burden! The first film's events are unforgettable and they would want to protect the golden moments. After all, they got the whole town supporting them and their kisses.
There's also many changes to the conversation when John Dory arrives, especially with the cast watching. One of the significant changes is King Peppy's lack of anxiousness when Poppy asks if he knows about 'secret relatives' and why the change will be seen in the next chapter. I promise it's a good change!
I can confirm that here, Floyd did alert Branch about his whereabouts. And, hey, they actually kept in touch in this AU before this story! Of course, Barb, the anarchy-loving rockstar, might have visited the place before. Even though Mount Rageous is far, the place is known by many.
The 'Heartbeat Diamond' has some interesting 'lore' and is detailed a little more for newcomers to understand its function. In fact, the term 'heartbeat' was supposed to be used for the title of another magical gem in the scrapped crossover story idea.
Up next, we will be on the road again! Thank you for reading this chapter! If you enjoy this story, be sure to follow or favorite this story! Constructive criticism would be much appreciated, but if anything foul, then you're going down the drain.
Until next time, keep on rocking!
