Chapter 3 - The Adventure!
Just like that, Bridget hopped onto Gristle and 'run it'. Everybody cheered loudly as they kissed passionately, rolling down the steps. It was a good show to watch. Maybe too good.
"YES!" whooped Aunt Smead, pumping her fist. "Let's [BLEEP]-ing go!"
Barb was distracted, having the biggest grin on her face. However, that didn't last when Trollex snatched the camera out of her hands before she took a shot of something too deep, pulling her back into the discussion between Branch and the Snack Pack.
John Dory was even too distracted by the wedding. He looked a little lost as Bridget and Gristle got intimate. For a moment, he swore and remembered that these Bergens could kill. But, given that he was pretty far out of touch with the Pop Tribe, he saw some progress.
Hmm, did Branch take part in all of this? That was one thing John Dory didn't expect. Branch did grow up, he thought in surprise.
After making sure they were a bit far away not to get his attention, Branch finally turned back to Poppy and even beckoned the rest of the Trolls to come close.
Beat, who had remained nearly silent, decided to be the first to voice his thoughts.
"Man, now this is one crazy train," he said, wiggling his antennas. "And yet, I thought currents can separate people. You must have a long history with your interesting brothers, Branch."
"Yep," said Branch dryly. "Poppy, do you know what you're doing?"
This time, Poppy felt sure about her choice. "Well, I see it as your second chance with your brothers! Isn't that awesome?"
Branch sighed, rubbing his face. "It's not that easy, okay?"
"He has a point if it's THAT long he hasn't seen his brothers for two decades," said Trollex.
Prince D couldn't help but pipe up. "Yeah. You might say this looks biased, but I do know the kinds of reactions from siblings-"
"We caught up quickly and naturally!" squeaked Cooper, popping up on his left. "But that dude looks more like a party pooper."
"I thought you said I was one," pointed out Branch.
"True, but I'm surprised that your brothers separated, not killed."
Branch bit his lip. "No, that's not good either."
"The Perfect Family Harmony is still a remarkable phenomenon," claimed Poppy. "And it's still possible! After all of you relaxed these years, you'll be back on your feet!"
Branch and Cooper shared a concerned glance before the former made the point straight.
"You don't get it," said Branch. "You don't have any siblings."
"That's my point!" said Poppy, chipper.
"What do you mean by that, Popsqueak?" asked Barb.
"Don't you see? Branch's so lucky to have a brother to fight for!"
Poppy was already hopping up and down. She was over the moon to see that Branch might not have been truly alone. He has a family to come home to! He might not see it, but family is one thing to make a person happy.
"For example," explained Poppy. "If I had a sister, we would have each other's backs! We'd be best friends, teach each other stories and never fight. Maybe we wouldn't talk 'cause we'd think the same thoughts and everyone would ask us if we're twins and we'd be like, 'well, not technically!'"
Trollex laughed, finding the twin part funny. However, the Techno King's smile disappeared not because of the annoyed Branch.
The Snack Pack lost their smiles, suddenly uncomfortable. DJ Suki, in particular, was cringing with her teeth clenched, her wary eyes directed at King Peppy worriedly.
King Peppy wasn't smiling anymore. What was presented was a solemn, resigned and distressed look. His eyes were shaking yet hardened and resigned. His wrinkles were more visible, looking so frail and vulnerable. The kind that turned him into dead meat on purpose.
As Queen Barb, King Trollex, Prince D and TBBT didn't have the same memories, they were alarmed by the crestfallen looks on the Pop Trolls. The Rock Trolls even felt it. This suddenly wasn't the cheerfulness they grew to see from the Pop Trolls. Nearly all of them were quiet, collectively…mourning.
It wasn't until Prince D decided to speak for the newcomers. "Is anything alright?"
Even Cooper was reserved. He looked at his brother with a frightened look.
"Yo, what's up?" said Trollex, feeling invisible pain within the group.
"Is there something wrong?" asked Beat.
Poppy was one of the last few to read the room. She looked behind to see her despondent father. Her smile faded into concern.
"Oh," she said quietly. "Dad, are you OK?"
King Peppy couldn't look at his daughter. "I-I'm fine. I'm fine."
Once he saw what this was about, Branch's heart sank and he was quick to analyze.
"Poppy, is this about Viva?" he asked softly. "Again?"
To his surprise, Poppy was startled. And it wasn't an act. "What? No! That's not my point! I thought of putting my feet into your shoes."
She looked at Barb. The Rock Queen shrugged with an unsettled look in her eyes. She turned to Trollex before looking away. Trollex slowly turned to Poppy, fearing what this 'Viva' was about.
Poppy took a deep breath in, patting Branch's shoulder sympathetically. "You are right that I can't relate, but I can say that if I had a sister if she were ever in trouble, I would do everything I could to help her. Perhaps one or two times, your brothers tried doing everything to help you. It can happen again! They might think of you everyday!"
OK, thought Branch. Poppy was already over Viva's disappearance decades ago. She just thought it was a good idea to imagine what things would be like to have a sister. While it came out wrong, Branch could see that she was trying to understand without thinking about Viva. And he appreciated the effort. She did realize her mistake.
As he stared at her, he remembered her offer to hear her out. Now, he was feeling agitated after John Dory's unwelcoming arrival. He hoped Poppy would hear him out later on. And after hearing her statement, it did bring to mind the effort his oldest brother made to help Floyd. Thinking back, even if it was late, there were one or two times when his brothers would try to…
Barb and Trollex were still processing the story surrounding 'Viva' when they noticed Branch's expression changing. Even though the mention was sour, it seemed like Poppy got through with Branch on similar terms. The two young leaders watched in apprehension, waiting to see how Branch would respond to the learning Poppy.
Branch made a small sigh, trying not to show it. He made sure to come close enough to Poppy to let her know.
"If there was a brother that I might do this for," he said firmly. "And I'm not saying there is, it would be Floyd."
Poppy had to keep her lips shut not to let an excited squeal out. "I'm not hearing 'no'."
By the time they were done, Bridget and Gristle had already walked down the red carpet and most of the Bergens started heading to the reception. But the young leaders of Bergen Town rushed right back to the Trolls to see what they missed out. Right on time when Poppy and Branch could confirm they were willing to help.
"OK!" chirped Poppy. "We're coming!"
John Dory didn't hear the first time, already distracted with the flowery arch of the wedding.
"This one needs more Christmas orbs," he commented.
"John Dory…" growled Branch.
"Oh, sorry, yes?" said John Dory dumbly, twirling around.
"We're coming."
"Samesy!" squealed Poppy.
John Dory hopped a little, pumping a fist in the air. "Yes! Works for me!"
"Yeah! BroZone 2.0!"
"Hmm, we don't exactly have a backup lineup."
"Well, why not just form the search party?" suggested Branch. "Would be better if we have more numbers depending on the security Velvet and Veneer have…"
"Maybe we can come along?" asked Gristle without a second thought.
"No, no," said John Dory with a kind look. "It's all good. I'm sorry for interrupting your wedding. Have your honeymoon!"
Bridget looked concerned. Mount Rageous could be dangerous. While she couldn't underestimate, she couldn't tell if most of the Trolls had ever been there. They could be easily killed right there from the inhabitants' pure recklessness.
"You're sure?" she asked worriedly. "Cause it looks like…"
"We got it from here," reassured Branch. "It's all good!"
"Yeah, don't worry, Bridget. This won't be too hard." Poppy even tipped this off with a confident wink. "Come to think of it, I don't think it's too dangerous. Enjoy your honeymoon, Bridget."
Bridget sighed, nodding a little. While she wanted to be there for her friends, she could see why Poppy and Branch were brave to take the risk, even if, for Branch, it was more personal.
"Fair point," she said. "Thank you, Poppy. But you better come home safe."
"Anyone else wants to come?" asked Poppy, turning to the rest of the Trolls.
Barb expected her fellow Rock Trolls to stay silent. Even though they did grow some empathy, they would still be lazy. Trollex thought that the Pop Trolls would be willing to join along. However, both didn't expect the Snack Pack to grow silent with nervous glances at each other. Waiting for SOMEONE to accept the offer.
Trollex's eyes shifted to the waiting Poppy and back at the silent Pop Trolls. King Peppy, he stood neutrally. Obviously, he might not have that much energy left to fight. Cooper, he was just staring at Poppy blankly, likely with no thoughts in his head. Biggie, erm, he seemed to look like he had already seen some things from before.
The poor, tall Pop Troll was staring into the distance.
Branch inhaled sharply, knowing these kinds of reactions. And to be honest, he didn't want any of his friends involved. Poppy would always get involved in everything. But he didn't want to force anybody else.
Tiny Diamond actually raised his hand, only to be cut off by the worried DJ Suki.
"Erm, I…have to return to Techno Reef soon," she said. "I still have to help the Pop Trolls there navigate around."
"I don't think I'll be unable to come," said Prince D sadly. "I have to attend that peace treaty with the Flexi Trolls. I'm booked."
But the rest of the Pop Trolls muttered some weak excuses with fake grins. There were already sweat droplets rolling down their faces. Poppy just shrugged, thinking they had other priorities. Branch looked sympathetic to them, understanding their hesitance for another crazy adventure.
Immediately, Barb and Trollex started to have great ideas. The two of them glanced at each other, wondering if they were thinking the same thing. For both of them, it was another adventure. One that wouldn't cost their villages too much. And it would give them a more chill adventure to explore the world while saving a brother who might mean a lot to Branch.
To Trollex, it suddenly became an escape. A chance to look into the wider world and perhaps help Branch sort out his problems with his brothers. Though, he reminded himself not to overexert himself. This could be a nice vacation without worrying too much. Just let his worries fly away and look up to the positives of reuniting this band for Branch's sake.
To Barb, it became a duty. She already held vengeance to inflict on Velvet and Veneer. She might have escaped, but that was only due to her royal status. She had to take it on SOMEONE as a reminder of trying to take away someone's music. She wasn't going to let that happen to anyone. And this was her shot at doing something great for once.
Helping a friend in need would also be enough.
"We'll go!" announced Trollex.
"Same!"
This prompted a chorus of gasps from the Rock Trolls. Their queen? Making the journey?
Poppy's eyes sparkled. "Oh yes! Thank you! Thank you!"
However, it was different for Branch. Not that he was skeptical. It was one out of pure concern for them.
"You two?" he said, pointing a finger at the two young royals.
"What? A little adventure won't hurt!" Barb was already cocky, regaining her edge. She turned to the Rock Trolls and gave a short salute. "Rock Trolls, make sure to report back to the royal council. I trust Carol and Riff to take care of the kingdom."
Beat hummed, rubbing his chin. He knew the risks for young Trollex, but Trollex couldn't resist such an adventure. And he didn't see Trollex projecting the adventure for something else, especially with Poppy wanting to help out of true loyalty for Branch. The little fish smiled at the idea before taking his pragmatic measure.
"I'll stay behind on this one," he said.
Trollex deflated, gently holding Beat close to him. "What? Buddy. You can come along!"
"It's all good," reassured Beat. A quick nuzzle into the Techno King's chest and he fluttered around his head. His half-lidden eyes could make him look laid-back, but it told that he was at true ease. "I'm relaxed. Someone needs to let the Techno Trolls know about this."
Before Trollex could think of exhibiting puppy eyes, he could see this logic. If he just left without warning, then the Trollex Trolls might have lost it. And there would need to be full consent to let the Electro House continue his duties without him. He gave Beat a slight nod, giving him his approval to run Techno Reef.
John Dory, on the other hand, looked skeptical for other reasons. "So we're having the help of two teenagers?"
"It's Queen Barb of the Rock Trolls and King Trollex of the Techno Trolls," sassed Barb, hands on her hips.
"That's even worse," snarled John Dory, narrowing his eyes at Barb.
"Hold it, bro," said Branch immediately. "She's NOT the enemy. She knows what she's saying."
"Besides, someone has to watch your back, big bro!" said Trollex, immediately grabbing Branch into a playful embrace from behind.
It turned into him playfully noogieing Branch on the head. As more used to Trollex's childlike pranks, Branch didn't seem to mind and smiled as if taking this with comfort. Combined with Trollex's vibrant green eyes, the two looked really happy.
"OK, King Trollex," chuckled Branch, gently pushing Trollex away. "Let's not do it in front of him, please."
"You mean little bro?" assumed John Dory.
"I'm younger than him," said Trollex.
John Dory huffed, a little envious. "Are they capable? Three is fine, but-"
"Enough with the melodrama, dude," groaned Barb. "I need some rock n roll that's real! What better way than helping a fellow Troll in need?"
"You don't know Floyd."
"Well, I know Branch."
Trollex then realized something. "Wait! What about your father, Barb? Will he be alright?"
"He'll be fine!" remarked Barb distractedly.
Sure enough, King Thrash sat with his fellow elderly Rock heroes in the retirement age care center. Nothing like a great game of bingo! They all slowly moved their ink stamps onto their sheets of paper, not hearing a word from their host speaking the numbers out loud. Despite the heavy gothic candles and skulls decorating the table, everybody looked bored or dreamy.
"...22," whispered the host, too focused on reading his magazine.
"Bingo!" called King Thrash, a hand raised upwards.
"You didn't write anything on your sheet of paper," deadpanned the host.
He didn't even need to see. King Thrash's bingo card was empty.
"Yeah, he'll be fine," mimicked Poppy in sarcasm and concern.
John Dory could only shrug. At least they got more company if the rest couldn't come along. "Alright! So, no second thoughts? Anyone want to come along?" When there was only silence and the distant chatter from the Bergens behind them, this confirmed the amount of people coming. "OK! Do you have everything you need?"
"Yep!" said Poppy with a thumbs-up.
Branch simply nodded humbly. He always came prepared with a bag of weapons in his hair.
Barb even pulled out a suitcase from her hair. "I never come unprepared."
"To the point that my friends think I'm overreacting," said Trollex, pulling out his ancient trident.
"Wait, you haven't waved that around in years."
"I thought we'd be able to perform. Why are you asking?"
Nobody was prepared for the earthquake. Trollex and Beat took a while to acknowledge until they noticed the chairs shivering. Everybody started looking around and Gristle immediately stood upward to find the source.
Strangely, only John Dory barely looked fazed.
"Looks like our ride's here!" he said.
Gristle's eyes were directed to underneath Bridget's feet and realized the slow lump forming underneath the carpet. He immediately pulled her out of the way just as the unidentified object popped out of the ground. When it landed back onto the chair, it was revealed to be a huge white, caterpillar-like, vehicle armadillo. Barking happily at the sight of John Dory.
"Here she is!" he cheered. "Meet Rhona, y'all. Ain't she a beaut?"
"She's, uh, really something?" commented Branch nervously.
Followed by Rhona licking Poppy and coating her in more glitter than any balloon could hold.
"Um, I guess she likes me?" said Poppy hopefully, grinning.
"Yeah, she does. Or she's marking you as prey. Can never quite tell with Rhonda." When Rhonda faced John Dory, the latter was quick to squeeze the former's cheeks. "Isn't that right, applesauce? Oh, yes, you are! Oh yes, you are! Oh yes, you are, you little angel~!"
They let John Dory have his time nuzzling the panting Rhonda, though that came to an end when she began licking him and he cheerfully stated she was licking the inside of his mouth. The door popped open and thus, our heroes entered Rhonda to start their quest.
"Bye, everybody!" cheered Poppy, waving to her friends. "We're getting the band back together!"
All the Pop Trolls waved at them, all saying their goodbyes. Even the Rock Trolls decided to join in, waving their horns of metal around in support of their Rock Queen.
Trollex was the next to go in…and couldn't go right in. Still holding his trident, the prongs and the end of its handle served as a new door. He tried going forward, but his trident refused to bend and enter.
"What? What the-?" he looked back down at his trident, confused. "Why isn't it going in?"
"No, you have to turn it that way," groaned Barb.
"What way?"
"That way?"
"You mean…erm…" Trollex turned his trident at a 90-degree angle, but now the prongs touched the top of the door frame.
"No, no, no, the other way!" moaned Barb, kicking the trident.
And thus, it spun the trident sideways. Pointing to the inside.
"Oh!" said Trollex, amazed. "Thanks!"
As the Techno King entered, Barb took a moment to give Branch a look.
"We're all gonna die on this trip," deadpanned Branch.
"Totally," said Barb, marching right into the vehicle. "At least they got the brains here."
"Just please direct the dumb one to John," recommended Branch.
As everybody said a few more goodbyes to their friends hopping on board, Prince D decided to come forward before Branch could leave. The latter only hung his head, unsure if he could take another lesson about giving his older brother a second chance.
"Prince D," he said firmly, keeping his arms closed. "If you have another good explanation why I should go with the Old One, then it better be something that won't make me lose my mind."
But Prince D was actually quite prepared. As the charming and understanding prince, he could see what might have been rooted in Branch's past. He did hear what happened to his grandmother, but what happened to his brothers might have left a more bitter scar on him. Poppy faltered a little when trying to give him a better understanding.
Besides, Prince D's separation from Cooper wasn't from any of their wills. So he picked up some parting words to give Branch some strength to move forward.
"Well, I appreciate that you were a bit honest," said the Funk Prince softly. "Maybe too rough, but you didn't try to make it too subtle. And it sounds like John Dory is trying to improve. Perhaps you should also tell him he is important to you."
Branch rolled his eyes. "And?"
"And that tells him he needs to also see you as important," finished Prince D. "It's always good to look out for each other. Don't know what other problems your brothers are facing out there. But if this separation is bad, then you must let them know that you're also here for them. Really here."
Branch was about to ask, but he assumed it had to do something with real life. He relaxed a little, knowing that Prince D was talking seriously.
"I can see why everyone was suspicious of John; he seems a little insensitive. But he just needs the right push to get him to learn."
It was nearly the opposite of Poppy's advice, but Prince D's was more grounded. Something more relatable to Branch. That was one thing that he had to admire about the Funk Trolls. They were really understanding to all and the royals were kind when they first met. They did acknowledge their differences and Branch felt comfortable with that.
For his part, he opted to trust his advice. "Only when I'm ready. It IS complicated."
"I know," reassured Prince D with a sweet smile. "Only when you're ready. But know when to let him know. I don't know what he did to trigger you and that needs to be resolved."
While still hesitant to be open, Branch could acknowledge this and smiled. "Thank you."
"No probs, bro," said Prince D humbly.
Not even a second to relax and get prepared and Poppy was bouncing all over the walls in John Dory's own critter vehicle. She heard bits and pieces of John Dory's interests but never knew he would get a vehicle for himself! He must have gotten it from somewhere far away, explaining why the inside looked different to the normal fuzzy critters the Pop Trolls came along.
The interior of Rhonda surprised everyone. Even Branch expected John Dory to be hungover on his boy band days. But there was nearly none of that. No sparkles, no vibrant colors. The hanging line of LED bulbs only provided illumination to see for the night. He built Rhonda on the inside very sensibly, types of machinery visible on the walls without any effort to cover them.
They had to be careful when stepping right in. While the now-speeding Rhonda was really careful for them not to trip inside, there were still wires and pipes poking around. Guess that John Dory didn't have that many visitors.
Just seeing the interior as a whole, it looked like a machine version of Branch's bunker.
It wasn't shiny or impressive to a flamboyant degree. It was tame.
It even gave everybody thinking space without getting distracted. Poppy and Barb together on the turquoise sofa, with the former waving around her scrapbook. Branch and Trollex together on the high bunk bed to assort the former's plan on a clue board. Meanwhile, John Dory was on the wheel to ensure they didn't crash into anything on the way out of Bergen Town's proximity.
Everybody even made sure to get changed. Branch returned to his original vest and pants while Poppy settled with a cute blue and green woven dress with leg warmers and her crown decorated in leaves and flowers. Barb just simply swapped her skirt with a comfortable pair of leather shorts. Trollex only wore his vest, letting his heart be seen.
Neither Branch nor Trollex paid attention to Poppy squealing her head off. They were used to it. But it was a wonder how they didn't pick up what she was saying to an interested Barb.
"Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!" chanted Poppy. "I can't believe we're in John Dory's custom vehicle!" She was hyperventilating so badly that she became cross-eyed. "Why is it so hot in here?"
"Calm down, Popsqueak," chimed Barb, petting the Pop Queen on the head. "There's no time for a cardiac arrest-"
"But we're getting the band back together in one day!" shouted Poppy, jumping onto her feet on the sofa. "One! Day! I can't wait to see them perform!" She began bouncing a little, thanks to the cushion below. "Branch is so cool! He's part of the band!"
Barb decided to get straight to the point so that she could understand. She never heard of BroZone before. "What's your deal with BroZone? Have you seen them perform if you couldn't recognize Branch as 'Bitty B'?"
Poppy landed back onto her bottom, more than happy to explain. "I actually never saw them perform. They used to perform at other Pop Villages and I was at the Troll Tree, so I didn't get to see before they broke up. But the minute I heard their music, it was history. They were even some of the first few artists I heard in my life!"
Barb nodded slowly. BroZone must have been one of Poppy's greatest inspirations in Pop music. While Barb wasn't a big fan of the typical boy band concept, she could see why Poppy loved to keep things sweet.
"Actually, I can take that," she said with a smile. "Not bad, Popstar. And does Kismet sound similar to BroZone?"
Poppy tilted her head in deep thought. "Not really. They only made their debut after we saved Bergen Town. They're surprisingly reclusive. And experimental. They only grew outgoing when all the tribes reunited. Come to think of it, I remember wondering if Branch was a Rock Troll when he tried the garage genre…"
"Eh, I don't think he's Rock, knowing his background check," said Barb.
Poppy shrugged, kicking her legs upwards. She looked so happy to be on another journey, her mind set ready this time. Barb could see her enthusiasm for helping Branch's brothers. Now Poppy looked really proud but more excited, like a dream come true.
But as Barb thought about how positive Poppy might get, she remembered the previous drama. The mention of having a sister. And the reaction she accidentally received from King Peppy and Branch. Barb frowned, glancing at where Branch was working.
Was 'Viva' an important person in Poppy's and Peppy's life?
"There's something I want to ask," said Barb seriously. "It might be dark."
"Oh, it's OK," said Poppy innocently. "What is it?"
"What is this deal about Viva? Is she your sister?"
Poppy read Barb's expression and her smile disappeared. Barb expected her tone to drop, but surprisingly, it didn't drop drastically.
"She was my older sister," explained Poppy.
Barb's eyes widened in worry. "Was?"
Poppy didn't hesitate to explain. She knew this might come, so she would need to tell Barb and the others about this. She accidentally triggered everyone. She didn't want to worry anyone unless people would want to talk about Viva. And she would have to let everyone know if she wants to.
"Viva was one of the casualties during the Trollstice when we escaped from Bergen Town," she explained calmly. "She stayed behind to help the other Trolls left behind in the tunnels, but they never got out. Dad sent in some scouts to find them, but they weren't there. We couldn't find their remains."
"I'm sorry for your loss," said Barb sympathetically.
Surprisingly, Poppy didn't take the time to process. She looked like she knew how to move on. Strong queen, thought Barb.
"It's alright," reassured Poppy calmly. "Dad took it pretty hard. We made a memorial for her and the people we lost. But he doesn't like talking about her. I've been helping him with his grief."
"So you're OK?"
"Really! Sure, I don't exactly remember Viva, but I know what she tried doing and I'm doing what I can to help others. Branch even helped me when I told him about my longing to know Viva. Things are growing better. I have you and Bridget as my sisters!"
Touched, Barb smiled. A little dazzled as well. "Not lovers?"
Poppy burst out laughing. "Barb! Don't ruin the moment!"
"Just kidding," said Barb, softly punching Poppy's shoulder. "I see you as a sister as well."
Poppy beamed. There was a slight bump, jolting Rhonda upwards. The scrapbook nearly crashed onto the floor, but Poppy was able to grab it. Right when it flipped over to a page showing her and Branch sitting together under the moonlight. With Branch being the one to hold the guitar. She smiled brightly at that memory. This was when he was starting to heal.
However, she noticed that she still applied the bright cyan woven whenever making a picture of Branch. She briefly looked up to see Branch, but the slight shadow from the top made it hard to see his blue skin properly. She looked to the front to see John Dory driving. His turquoise skin was still there, but not as vibrant as before.
"Poppy, is this about Viva? Again?"
She was suddenly scared. Those words of worry from Branch echoed in her head. And looking back at the slightly washed-out turquoise skin of the two brothers, she wondered if she could fit into this mission. She looked back down on her clothes. Cheerful, calm like an ocean, an adventure to explore. But all the battles she fought often came with a downside.
Her eyes widened in realization. How could she understand Branch's reluctance to help his brothers? She didn't have siblings. She didn't know what it was like to be alone for too long. And she didn't know what it was like for Branch's brothers to be away from each other. Bitter and angry towards each other without someone to go home to.
And she just had to butt in like always…
She turned back to Barb and kept her voice to a whisper. She didn't want anyone else to hear them. If there was anyone who could help her, Barb was one of them. Sure, Poppy could talk to the Pop Trolls, but some of them just went along with thinking positively. Maybe Barb was too blunt, but she often displayed a softer side.
"Um, Barb, to be honest, maybe I kinda thought of Viva." Poppy chuckled, but it was a one-last desperation to believe everything should be fine. "Remember when I tried convincing Branch to rescue Floyd? I think I nearly rubbed him the wrong way."
"It's OK," said Barb. "You did say you wouldn't know how it feels to have siblings."
"N-No. That's not what I mean. I mean…" Poppy nearly stuttered, but she decided to be open this time. She couldn't hide it for that long. "It's like last time. I'm trying my best to listen, but…" Her ears drooped in doubt, fretful. "How much have I done wrong? I can't force myself, but should I triage my priorities properly? He's my boyfriend. I don't want him to think I'm doing this for my own gain."
There was that thought. The one that persisted in the mind of not being good enough. And it hurt for Barb to see Poppy already anxious when she thought further.
From Barb's perspective, she could relate to Poppy. She might not have a boyfriend or girlfriend, but she could see that Poppy didn't want to hurt anyone. While she nearly upset her father, it was a mistake she didn't notice and maybe it was just how Peppy reacted. Barb might have been all too honest with her World Tour, but she didn't want the same thing to happen to someone: someone who believed there was only one path.
"It's not easy for us queens, is it?" muttered Barb. She straightened her posture, her shoulders raised to maintain her higher intelligence. "But let's talk about the truth. As much as you talk about Branch, he talks about you a lot! To me, to Trollex, to the Funk Royals. So it's unlikely he would actually believe you're doing this for yourself."
Poppy didn't look so sure. She knew how everybody else responded to Branch. Meanwhile, it was an up-and-down journey she didn't know if she had made true progress with Branch's constant hesitations.
"But, aren't I?" she asked. "He is scared of me."
"Good catch," huffed Barb. "But not all relationships grow the same way. You did make an effort to be there for Branch. Maybe you weren't told much and I actually been there before, but Branch knew you would do anything to help others. You're not only a fighter but a learner. If you aren't, how the hell am I friends with you?"
Poppy's eyebrows remained low. To her, it was only dumb luck. Branch was the one who started the true reuniting of the tribes. He was the one who pointed out that they didn't lose their music. He was the one who gave her the idea after she broke the strings. It was mostly a team effort.
The Pop Queen wasn't sure how much her small actions speak to everyone since Branch often acts as the sane guy of the team.
When Poppy didn't speak, Barb continued. "Surprised by that? Dude, you got to know your achievements straight."
Poppy rolled her eyes. Yeah, achievements. She only achieved them after making heartbreaks.
Barb sighed, wanting to find a way to tell Poppy that it would still be worth it in the end and her learning did matter. She suddenly had an idea.
"Then explain this!" she chirped. "Hey! JD Just Dance! Switch to Triple M!"
John Dory didn't respond, busy listening to the soft radio.
"Oh, you don't know that nickname. Um, John Dory?"
"Yes?" said John, turning around.
"Triple M, please!"

Surprisingly, he complied and switched to the one rock channel Barb knew. The Rock Queen picked up the Pop Queen onto her feet, much to her utter surprise. She didn't expect Barb to lift her arms up and down like she was playing the drums.
The drum buildup was crisp yet felt like it came from the repetitive kick drum. Harsh synths were added to create a dissonant tone. Barb just grinned in anticipation. A savage grin showed this rebellion against the bad things in the world.
Meanwhile, Poppy just watched on, tapping her foot to the rhythm of the intro.
[0:05]
Barb first came in with an eye close to Poppy's. As she sang, she pretended to be playing the guitar. These punk, Latino-flavored riffs were gonna get her jumping. And she knew this one Poppy could relate to. One of standing tall and putting their minds on tomorrow to live another day.
She pointed her fingers right at Poppy, waiting for her to sing. The Pop Queen already knew the song by heart. And even though Poppy looked shy to sing along, seeing the encouraging and thrilled expression of the Rock Queen eventually convinced her to give in.
Poppy felt bold enough to sing along, free-spirited. As Poppy sang along, Barb added a chant of 'power' with her hands in the signs of horns. The Pop Queen had an idea and spun around Barb for an impromptu dance of their own.
[0:16]
Their voices became a harmonious mix of Pop and Rock. Quite fitting for this pop-punk song. Poppy, with the harmonies to sweeten the song's stance and Barb, with the raspiness and scream to assert the message. And to Barb's surprise, their new dance was coordinated with the song's beat. A fun freestyle mixed with newstyle dance moves for such a hit.
Barb pointed to Poppy, encouraging her to see. She wanted to see if Poppy could keep up with the fast-paced song. When she did, Barb mocked placing her arm over her face as if feeling faint from Poppy's charming vocals.
Poppy really got it with the ways of Rock and Punk! Punk was Barb's favorite genre out of all rock music. Even with the weird sound effects and the fast electric guitars, her voice somehow blended in.
As Barb sang the next line, Poppy grabbed her hand again and the two of them spun around before posing back-to-back.
As they sang together, Poppy could see the pride in Barb's eyes. The energy, the passion, the definition of what it took to be not only a great queen but a great woman in her own right. And Poppy got a taste of her confidence at the right time.
Poppy was starting to smile genuinely, already loving this. And she was starting to get what Barb meant. She did handle the song well and even though she hesitated, she sang right on time with no fault in her voice. When that light sparkled in her eyes, Barb smirked as if telling her she knew it all along.
"Don't repress it all," thought Barb as if telling her. "Feel proud of what you did."

The Rock Queen then twirled around and pointed a finger at Poppy's chest. For a moment, the Pop Queen thought it would be a scolding and she blushed in embarrassment as if she had done something wrong. But when she saw the barely restrained gleeful grin of Barb, it reminded her that Barb loved to intimidate people from time to time.
The next lines she sang reminded her to never look back on the past. They found the strength to move forward, to get where they were now. Even if mistakes could happen, it was important to remember to take the lesson, not the guilt. Do what they could do best to make things better.
And Poppy could see this clearly. For Branch. For his brothers.

The electric guitars kicked full gear alongside Poppy and Barb as they kicked off with a literal heavy kick. They began dancing together, eye to eye. Hitting their hands upwards and punching downwards, an aggressive and energetic choreography. Their high notes couldn't be restrained by the exhausting dancing. It was a feisty party to live for.
From the front, John Dory wondered what was the enjoyment of rock music. Poppy wasn't exactly Rock. But he took a moment to close his eyes briefly and listen. The colorful guitar riffs, the explosion of drum beats coordinated so well, the melodies that matched the empowering lyrics. It was like tasting the start of a war and not the grim kind.
None of the Rock Trolls ever told him it was the kind that made him want to dance and feel the vibrations of a bumpy water slide.
Knowing Rhonda could drive without anyone piloting her, he lifted his arms and pretended to play an air guitar. At the same time, Poppy and Barb did the same when they heard the guitar becoming prominent.

Of course, since they were indoors, Branch and Trollex could also hear the song.
Branch briefly hung his head. The music wasn't too loud, but nearly distracted him from his work. Trollex didn't seem to mind. He was humming away as he dug into the box of pictures. He didn't notice Poppy and Barb dancing together to vent off all the stress.
He could vibe with this song! It felt like a crazy circus.
Though, both Branch and Trollex looked up to see John Dory's reaction. He already got back to driving. At least he could tolerate this kind of loud thing.
And in comparison, Branch seemed to appear to be the kind of guy who would like something quieter. As his sky-blue eyes narrowed in forced concentration on the clue board, it got Trollex to remember how highly-strung Branch could be. Sure, Trollex was a daredevil, but he was happy that he and Branch were some of the few to acknowledge the eccentricities and concerns in the world.
While the numb-minded Trollex was one second away from dozing a little, the rowdy rock music helped him to keep awake to map out the operation fully. He sometimes likes getting straight to the point, but Branch would be cautious enough to have backup plans.
[0:55 to 2:03]
For the clue board, he wasn't sure how these images of the band would help, but Branch stored a lot in his pocket. This guy was as neat as a fiddle! It felt weird seeing through his baby pictures. Could Branch even dance with stubby little legs when on stage? The thought was amusing. The images surrounding the map filled the Techno King with wonder.
Every picture consisted of four similar-looking Pop Trolls and one baby being Branch. They were quite distinct by hair color and puffer vests in most of these pictures.
Some appeared to be more family time, with the occasional blurred lines of one brother chasing another to the low angles of the brothers taking pictures together.
Some ripped pictures included the boy band wearing different fashions, from tuxedos to disco to something Delta would approve.
Trollex searched all the pictures to find a trace of Rock or Techno culture. To his disappointment, not that many. But he loved the authenticity of these pictures.
Especially one he gingerly picked out from the cardboard box with a giggle. "Where did you and your brothers get the idea of being stuck in doll boxes?"
Branch didn't seem fond of remembering THAT memory, staring at a picture of him dressed in denim moments ago. "It was an era! And it was when dolls were popular for girls back then."
Trollex smirked. "Can't imagine all of you in heavy plastic makeup. Sort of."
"John's idea," muttered Branch, snatching the picture out of his hands. "He likes going by what's 'relevant' in pop culture. He likes going by a 'simple formula'. He dismisses anything out of the ordinary. His structuring is…" He shivered anxiously, right in time to find a picture of Spruce in a drag queen outfit. "...messy."
Trollex took the picture and laughed loudly. "Oh, man! I think he just slayed the whole cake table down onto himself!"
[End of Song]
Neither noticed, but this cracked a reaction from John Dory to turn his head around. He looked away immediately, busy on the road. At least he could get to hear this.
Trollex pulled out another picture and he gasped. "I recognize this concept! Now that matches perfectly with that pop album 8-Bittowell was obsessed with."
When Branch asked, he twirled the picture to show with an ecstatic grin. It was of Brozone decked in robotic helmets.
"I get the ambition, but I don't see the necessity of him remixing them. Those songs you sang aren't bad. I think I heard all of them."
Branch huffed at first. But he could take it easy since it was just Trollex. "Sure. For a person who doesn't know BroZone before, you know our art."
Trollex moved his head sideways as if saying 'so-so'. The kind of look a mainstream listener would give when uncertain about the actual artist. "A few songs here and there. Sometimes, old artists can be tricky remembering."
Branch shrugged nonchalantly and returned to gluing a few more pictures on the clue board.
Trollex proceeded to do the same, but the more social troll couldn't stop talking.
"Speaking of tricky remembering, can you remind me why we're not bringing up Kismet?" he asked quietly.
This time, Branch didn't flinch. He only scowled. "It's a side project. Don't give John Dory this satisfaction."
"You know that he seems to quite uptight on what's 'popular'," pointed out Trollex dryly.
Branch sighed. "OK, OK, shut up. Kismet is popular in our own right. We might have toured around ever since the tribes reunited, but it's mostly a private club for ourselves."
Trollex raised his eyebrows, surprised. That would explain their avoidance of the constant spotlight and news. They didn't share much about what they do. He could respect that. The Bounty Hunters were like this as well, preferring to be mysterious. Putting John Dory further in the dark might lessen his 'uptight' attitude for now.
"Fair point then," he said, nodding. "Well, it's good your mind isn't on competition."
"Have you had trouble with that?" asked Branch with a raised eyebrow.
"Everything is sweet and steady within the Electro House," deadpanned Trollex.
Branch snickered. "Wonderful."
When Trollex picked up the next picture, he froze. He narrowed his eyes as he held it close to his eyes, the green glow brightening this darkened picture. Floyd and Baby Branch in the same cradle. Floyd was carrying Branch while holding a storybook.
Trollex studied Floyd's body language. He seemed sweet, but it wasn't only from his soft and loving smile. It was also how he wasn't clutching Branch too tightly despite the baby nearly falling out of his grip. The book had a symbol of a crown that looked strangely like Trollex's. It was a calm moment for the two.
The Techno King's smile faded with a frown of confusion and worry. When John Dory mentioned Floyd, that was enough to sway Branch. Didn't Branch say that his four brothers left him? He seemed to be willing to help Floyd but distasteful towards John Dory. Curiosity got the best of Trollex, wanting to know a bit more.
His voice remained low, but it noticeably dropped its liveliness. It sounded robotically cold.
"You said that your brothers abandoned you and you swore them off," he muttered. "This wasn't the case for Floyd. Why's that?"
When Branch looked up, Trollex realized his mistake and looked away.
"Y-You don't have to tell me," uttered Trollex, flustered. "Sorry, I'm curious."
Branch was understandably annoyed. However, as he stared at Trollex, he contemplated whether to tell him or not, much like how he planned to tell Poppy about his troubles. He could still talk to her regardless of whether he told Trollex or Barb or anyone. The Pop Troll was still peeved about the whole Brozone and Perfect Family Harmony that started this whole mess.
But the thing was, he couldn't be mad at Floyd in contrast to his other three brothers.
Still listening, John Dory's expression changed to a quiet, downfallen look. It came to his attention what Floyd had done since he had never caught up with his brothers.
It came as a surprise to him that Branch seemed to have it easy with explaining.
"To be honest, me and Floyd are kinda different than the family," murmured Branch, leaning closely to Trollex for him to hear. "Before the Bergens got us, Spruce and John Dory had packed their bags and left. Clay went to the Sad Book Club and Floyd worked in isolation at a different part of the Troll Tree. And then, Clay disappeared when all of us escaped from the Bergens."
Trollex leaned it a bit closer, noticing the longing look from Branch. His good ear lifted upwards, rapt in interest.
"Floyd was the only one," confirmed Branch. "We only saw each other again when I built the first few levels and defense system of my bunker." He chuckled sardonically. "I don't remember all of it, but I was mad at him. Angry at everyone leaving me behind. And when Floyd found me, it felt like nothing could be salvaged."
Trollex's eyes dimmed, sympathetic. "It sounds like a lot of steam came out of you two."
Branch kicked the floor meekly. "Well, I…um…threatened him with fireworks and buzz saws." He paused, trying to remember. "And barbed wire to throw him away."
Trollex mimicked an explosion. "Yikes. Your village must have been concerned if there was a war."
Branch huffed. "It was pointless trying to reach out for help. Floyd did, but his noticeable change in appearance deterred many. Creek got in the way as well. And even though Floyd tried coming back for me, I isolated myself from him since I was scared it could happen again. He gave me a phone number to ring him, but I didn't call him back for the first few years."
Trollex hid it so well as not to look concerned, keeping a blank face to make Branch comfortable talking. It could be due to the unintentional long stare, but Branch immediately reassured any concerns.
"Don't worry," said Branch, making a lop-sided smile. "That doesn't mean I still hate him. It was…" His face was flushed in light pink. "...when I began making poems…" He looked embarrassed spelling all of this out, the weight of wanting to be honest. "...as a teenager."
Trollex crossed his arms with a look that told Branch he didn't find that silly.
And with that, Branch continued without pausing again. "I called him over to help. And when we sat down, we found ourselves in perfect family harmony."
He chuckled and it was out of genuine fondness for Floyd. And that was when John Dory couldn't help peeking over the chair.
"It was corny, but so was our mood. Grey, depressed Branch summoning cryptic tellings with dark, brooding Floyd. And for once, it didn't feel like I was the only freak."
Trollex nodded, surprised. "Sounds lovely. And for the record, that doesn't sound freaky in the slightest. And did you make amends with Floyd?"
Branch had a thoughtful look. "I…kind of think so. Floyd still tried finding help, but it was at the time when I grew to be independent. I didn't want to burden him, so I told him it was OK. I had to use the traps again, which weren't enough to stop him."
Trollex narrowed his eyes. "You overreacted."
"OK, yeah, I overreacted," admitted Branch with no hesitance. "It came to my mind and I lowered the traps whenever he visited. We had monthly or yearly meetings. Weekly phone calls whenever he had free time. Nearly all our chats were on misery, loneliness and real beauty in a ridiculously saturated world. He's a bit more blunt in his art when addressing negative emotions, that's for sure."
The smile slowly faded, coming to reflect on how their calls became less frequent. It wasn't because Floyd was busy with his solo career and adventure.
"Then, we didn't talk much when I got my colors back. I started hanging out with more people that I nearly forgot to call him. I haven't heard from him since he told me he would be at Mount Rageous for a show I thought of watching."
Trollex's eyes glowed a little brighter but not too bright to blind Branch. The Techno King found this story wholesome. While things didn't look swell for the entire BroZone, this told him how the two brothers came to still hold love for each other instead of holding grudges. Floyd must be such a determinator, even if the Pop Trolls at that time were ignorant.
He placed a comforting hand on Branch's shoulder. "You had no idea that it would happen. It's not your fault. I don't know what to think of Floyd after he made the stupid choice to leave in the first place. But at least you got things sorted out with him already."
Branch smiled, but he feared Floyd's sad look when he thought about the current situation. "I doubt he would ever get things sorted out with John, Spruce and Clay. He barely had a voice. How would he sort things out with me since I haven't talked to him in a long time and if he sees me crumble..."
Trollex nodded, even as much as he wanted to argue. While he didn't have the full context, he imagined it must also be challenging for Floyd regarding BroZone. He decided to save fixing the conflict until he understood the full problem thoroughly and went with a lighter possibility. Besides, hearing this got him emotional as well.
"At least he still has you," said Trollex with a kind smile. "That's one thing you and Floyd would need to remember. When my father died, I nearly sold myself to further harm, even as an adult. But I wasn't exactly alone since I still have my mother, my best friends and my love."
Branch rolled his eyes. "And you didn't know that until nearly too late. But that's different since, like you said, a good king can't appear as weak."
"And you did say that doesn't mean we don't need help," pointed out Trollex. "Maybe my situation is different, but I understand your struggle. Let's make an oath now not to forget there are still good people. Floyd is a good brother, Branch."
This was enough for Branch's smile to return. "Oaths are overdue today, kid."
"If it's irrelevant to promises."
Branch sighed in relief, grateful that Trollex heard him out. He returned to the clue board, so many of these pictures hanging together. Seeing some of the pictures of his brothers got him smiling more, but he found himself warmly attached to the pictures he had with Floyd. It felt much safer back then.
"...I wonder how he will feel to see you," the Pop Troll stated, trying to lighten the mood. "He might get jealous over your flamboyance."
Trollex only guffawed confidently. "Wonder how that competition will go."
"Didn't you say it's good that my mind isn't on competition?"
"Just as long as Floyd doesn't take it too seriously," reassured Trollex.
From the front, John Dory slowly looked away, shaken. He felt jealous. And it wasn't due to the weird-looking, retro king, but it was about what Floyd succeeded in doing. Something John often forgets. But old habits die hard.
The eldest Brozone member shook his head. It would still be the older brother's responsibility anyway and he was still the leader; he was supposed to keep everything in check. He was supposed to make things perfect. Even if it would kill him.
AN: This is something I want to address first; Branch and Trollex having a brother-like moment together was the first scene I've ever written. It's kind of a test on if I still got it with my version of Trollex ever since 'Real Harmony Takes a Lot of Voices'. And then, you add in Barb acting as Poppy's younger and rebellious sister, you get a true harmonious photo shoot. This even fits the theme of family since found family can bring people comfort, someone to confide with.
As mentioned before, Floyd and Branch had kept in touch in this AU. A lot of people pointed out that it was a flimsy excuse for Floyd to leave. I actually agree since it makes Floyd unsympathetic and the original film seems to have a kick out of making Branch miserable. So, I added some deconstruction through Floyd eventually returning to Branch. I had to think about what to write so that their relationship doesn't become abusive and to stay consistent with the timeline narrative. It's also a way to speak volume about Floyd's emo look; something Branch can relate to.
Interestingly, Branch's talk about Floyd with Trollex is inspired by a scene in the 'Five Nights at Freddy's' movie where Mike explains about his missing brother. So it was easy for me to imagine and describe how Branch is feeling. I hope this poignant moment helps to strengthen the connection between Floyd and Branch.
Now, I don't plan to fully write a flashback of Branch and Floyd, but I imagine a scene like in 'Scream (2022)' where the grey Branch tells Floyd to get the hell out of his new bunker, understandably bitter and upset that his brothers left him. The rest would be left to the imagination on how they reunite.
Anyway, a lot and a lot of adjustments made and, yes, I included the deleted scene of John Dory getting licked by Rhonda. I actually found it damn funny. But the biggest adjustment will have to be King Peppy's reaction to the mention of a 'sister'. This time, EVERYBODY reacts. In this AU, all of the Pop Trolls know about Viva. I'll admit it's due to peer pressure after accidentally upsetting one of my friends. And while nothing can be changed, I took the time to understand and thought if it's good to write this in.
So, yeah, here, King Peppy didn't lie to Poppy about Viva. Viva is (and was) a legend to the Pop Trolls. Poppy already moved on from the grief, though her tendencies to jump forward make it easier for people to assume she's just projecting without listening. While others, including Branch and Barb, are more understanding, this contributes to Poppy's growing wariness of being 'selfish'.
Another thing I made different was Prince D having a more bigger role in this chapter. It's also kind of due to peer pressure after checking on TV Tropes. However, while I didn't plan for him to come along, I actually find the idea proposed interesting with giving advice to Branch. Though, I had trouble deciding what he should say to Branch, especially since he doesn't share the same beliefs Branch carries.
Thank you for reading this chapter! If you enjoy this story, be sure to follow or favorite this story! Constructive criticism would be much appreciated, but if anything foul, then you're going down the drain.
Until next time, keep on rocking!
