Chapter 1

"December 11th, 1994"

It's hard to believe that it had already been over five years since the bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. The perps had been captured, imprisoned or executed including the woman known as Madam Boss, the former head of Team Rocket. Since then, my dad and I had been promoted to a new field of law enforcement with one mission: to destroy Team Rocket once and for all.

Our jobs were to seek out and destroy any plots Team Rocket had to kill using Pokemon. If there was one thing that the terrorist bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 had taught us, is that Team Rocket will do whatever it took to achieve it's goals, even shedding blood of innocent people and Pokemon. But we also learned that Team Rocket would target more than just aviation, more than just targeting Pokemon trainers travelling across the Atlantic. Yes, they had a plan to cause chaos and instill fear of all forms of industry.

It all started on the morning of December 11th, 1994 in the capital city of the Philippines, known as Manila. A man named Armando Forlani had arrived at the Nino Aquino International Airport and from the looks of it, he would seem like a normal Italian businessman. But there was more to him than met the eye.

"Good morning sir," said a female check in agent with Philippine Airlines. "Checking a bag?"

"No," replied Armando. "No, I'm not checking a bag. I just have a carry on."

"Any Pokemon that can explode?"

Now, one thing that did come out of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 was that Pokemon were scrutinized at the check in counter to ensure that they didn't have the ability to explode. Team Rocket knew this and they had ways of bypassing it. Sure, Armando had a suitcase and claimed that he had no explosive Pokemon, but it did.

"No, my Pokemon do not explode."

"Do you have any Voltorbs or Electrodes?"

"No, I do not. Only a Golem."

Seemingly reassured, she continued with the process and printed out the boarding pass for Armando.

"Gate 13 in Terminal 1," she said. "Have a nice flight."

But as Armando left, the gate agent felt a sense of unease at the demeanor that Armando displayed.

Approaching the security checkpoint, Armando anxiously awaited his turn knowing that everything he had planned could be ruined if he was caught. Emptying his pockets in the bin and placing his suitcase on the belt, Armando took a deep breath and stepped through.

But the alarm didn't go off. Now, it was a matter of fooling the operator of the x-ray machines. The operator studied what was inside and he found nothing. He saw a Golem inside, but didn't think it was necessary.

The flight that Armando had scheduled himself to fly on that morning was Philippine Airlines Flight 434 to Tokyo, Japan via Cebu in the southern Philippines. The flight was to be operated by a Boeing 747-200 combi. As the jumbo jet was being prepared, her flight's captain and his crew approached the gate.

"Good morning, Ed," said the gate agent, as the flight crew showed their credentials. . "Did all your shopping yet?"

"Almost," replied Ed. "I want to maybe pick up something in Tokyo for the missus. She wants a teapot."

"Well, for a captain, you can certainly afford it," chuckled the first officer, nudging him in the side playfully.

"Jaime," he remarked. "Of course I can afford it."

"All set, guys. Have a good day."

Captain Eduardo Reyes would be the pilot on this morning's flight, a 58-year old veteran pilot who served in the Philippine Air Force from 1958 to 1964, and had flown with Philippine Airlines since 1964. First Officer Jaime Herrara was also a veteran pilot who had flown with Philippine Airlines since 1970. Herrera was 46 years old and was serving as co-pilot at the time of the bombing.

Finally, Flight Engineer Dexter Comendador who, like Reyes, was also a Philippine Air Force pilot, serving from 1983 to 1992. He had flown with Philippine Airlines since 1992. Comendador was 34 years old at that time.

Stepping into the cabin, the three manned flight crew greeted the purser before proceeding up to the cockpit.

"Uh, by the way, Ed," said Dexter. "Did you read the latest security briefing?"

"What briefing?"

"About the Pope coming here after Christmas," answered the Flight Engineer. "Security is going to be a little more tighter."

"Isn't it already tight as it is? I mean, we haven't had a major bombing since Lockerbie."

"Well, don't underestimate Team Rocket," warned Jaime. "They'll stop at nothing to get what they want."

Even though it had been several years since Lockerbie, the threat Team Rocket posed to aviation was greatly higher than it has been. To Team Rocket, Pokemon served two purposes: to make money and to kill people that stood in their way.

"I'll go do the safety inspection," offered Dexter as Ed opened the cockpit door and allowed himself and Jaime inside.

"Ed, you don't think Team Rocket could launch an attack against Philippine Airlines, could you?" asked Jaime. Ed sighed at this remark.

"I don't know, Jaime," he said. "I just don't know."

Nevertheless, the flight crew continued their pre-flight checks as Armando waited in the terminal to board Flight 434. The load between Manila and Cebu was usually small, almost empty. However, the load usually increased on the Cebu to Tokyo leg. To Armando, he didn't care. The more people that Team Rocket would kill, the better, it appeared.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," announced the gate agent into the loudspeaker. "We will now begin boarding Philippine Airlines Flight 434 to Cebu and Tokyo, Japan at this time through the doorway at Gate 13. Please have passports and boarding passes in hand, thank you."

With the small amount of passengers, the plane was quickly boarded and Armando took Seat 39A in the back of the enormous jet. This was carefully chosen, for he had a close spot by the plane's lavatory where he would construct his test that would set this whole story in motion.

At 5:35am, Philippine Airlines Flight 434 departed from Manila and proceeded southeast to Cebu. Once the seatbelt sign would turn off, Armando's mission would begin…
