Chapter 1: Slop Shop
Mal sighed as sunlight creeped in through a crack in her curtain and she was forced to open her eyes. Another day of school had arrived. Mal reluctantly sat up and stumbled out of bed. She threw on her favorite dark purple (with a splash of pink and green) dress and, without bothering to brush her messy bed head, she walked out the door. Mal smirked as tattered and dirty "peasants" rushed out of her way, tripping over their own feet. They were scared of her. Good. Mal continued on to the Slop Shop.
"I would like my order," she snapped at the ugly, wart filled troll behind the counter. "And make it quick. I don't have all day"
"What's your order, purple princess?" The troll grinned maliciously, showing his food filled crooked teeth. Mal narrowed her eyes. This troll was her least favorite, not that she liked any. When she was eight, she had ordered a "grown up coffee," and the troll had laughed.
"There's no such thing!" he had said.
"But I want it!" Mal had replied, frowning. "If you don't give it to me, I'll… I'll banish you! Like my mom banished Evie!" The troll laughed so hard he almost cried.
"You think you're a princess, don't you," he said mockingly "A purple princess. Well, no 'grown up' coffees today, my purple princess." After that, Mal had stormed out of the Slop Shop.
Sometimes, Mal wished she had banished him. Trolls weren't afraid of her like the tattered peasants. And she didn't like that at all.
But this morning she wanted her order, and she wanted it now.
"What's taking so long?" Mal asked impatiently.
"We'll, for one thing, purple princess," the troll started.
"Oh, stop calling me that!" Mal yelled. "You want money, don't you? I'm not going to pay you if you call me that horrid name one more time."
"Jeez, fine." The troll rolled his eyes. "You didn't even tell me your order."
"I get it every day. You should know by now."
"Then incoming dirt coffee." The troll went to the kitchen and came back with a dark black coffee. It reeked of dirt and carried a faint scent of toads. "This is five dollars." The troll stretched out his green hairy hand.
"I only have one," Mal replied, crossing her arms.
"Then no coffee."
"Fine." Mal turned away and started for the door. The troll put the coffee down on the counter. Before you could even say "Wicked," Mal had whirled around, grabbed the coffee, and sprinted out the door.
"Come back here!" The troll yelled. "I'll get you for thiiiiiis!"
Mal grinned, clutching her lukewarm dirt coffee. And slowly, so she wouldn't be on time, Mal set off to school.
