Lucius Malfoy SI

Chapter 1:

I suddenly found myself facing a large bat who said, "Hello, I am a fanfiction plot device called a Random Omniscient Being. For amusement purposes you will live the life of Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter series starting in 1991. Your goal is to improve the future of the Malfoy family and the wizarding world according to your own ideals. At the end of Lucius Malfoy's life you will be returned to your life of origin with no time having gone by, and will get a monetary prize proportional to how well you do.

No, you don't get a choice in this. You'll get the following bonuses. Unbreakable mind barriers for yourself, Narcissa and Draco. You will have complete recollection of the books and movies of the main Harry Potter series, as well as Lucius's own memories.

Suddenly I was in what was clearly Malfoy manor. Dobby was holding a drink for me. I said, "Dobby. I am going to be making some changes. Appear in a something more respectable, more like a Malfoy uniform. Do not punish yourself without being told to by me. Now give me today's Daily Prophet."

Dobby said, "Yes Master Malfoy" The date on the paper was 28th of July, 1991.

I went to Draco's room. "Draco."

He said, "Yes father."

I told him solemnly, "You now have new responsibilities to the Malfoy family. You must consider your words and actions and how they effect the future of House Malfoy.

Do you expect to be in Slytherin or in Gryffindor?"

Draco was taken aback, "In Slytherin of course!"

I sharply replied, "Then act like it. Think before talking, plan before deciding. Don't insult unless it is part of a calculated plan. Don't reveal your opinions unless it will improve your interests."

Draco said, "I understand."

I added, "You are to try to befriend Harry Potter. Even if we later determine he is to be an enemy, there is no need to let him know that in advance. His mother was muggleborn. Note that I did not say mudblood, which you are not to say. Explain to our friends who believe in purity, that we do not need to give away our opinions to the world.

To not make him think of us as his enemy, you will not insult him, his mother, nor any companions he might acquire, no matter what their birth may be."

Draco said, "I will try father."

I said, "You will succeed for our future, not just try. We succeed as a family by appearing pleasant and striking like a snake, not by roaring like a lion. If for some reason you become an eagle, you also will carefully select your prey and not reveal yourself to your prey too soon. I cannot see you becoming a badger, but if you did, you would need to make it work in your favor."

Draco said, "I will be a snake."

A few days later Draco Malfoy was being fitted for his robes at Madam Malkins. A boy with messy hair entered the place to be fitted also. Draco said, "Hello, Hogwarts, too?"

Harry Potter answered "Yes." and they had the same conversation they did in canon until Hagrid was mentioned. Draco noticed that Harry seemed to like Hagrid and refrained from saying negative things about him. He also introduced himself, and Harry introduced himself as well, so Draco understood that he should be nice and said, "I'll be seeing you on the train, and even if we wind up in different houses at Hogwarts I hope we can be friends."

On the train, Draco made the rounds with Crabbe and Goyle. "Hello Harry Potter, this is Crabbe and Goyle."

Ron Weasley gave a slight cough. Draco introduced himself, "Hello Mr. Weasley, I know that our families have had their differences but I believe in starting a new acquaintanceship with good will." and put his hand out to shake, which Ron refused. Harry had a lesser opinion of Ron after that.

Draco said, "Be seeing you." and left the compartment, just as Hermione Granger arrived. Draco introduced himself and said "A pleasure to make your acquaintance." When Hermione said that she just discovered the world of magic, Draco added, "There was a well regarded potioneer in the past, called Hector Dagworth-Granger. You might want to look into whether you are related to him. My father can help you prove that connection, and explain the advantages it might bring, if that were to be the case."

Hermione thanked Draco.

The sortings went the same way as in canon. Draco explained the new strategy of appearing to be nice to his Slytherin colleagues.

I showed some canon memories to Narcissa. "I am both the original Lucius and another. I pledge that I aim to improve the future of the Malfoy family."

I invited Severus Snape to visit. "Severus, have some firewhiskey." He only made smalltalk, waiting for me to get to the point, which I eventually did.

I started, "Our interests coincide. If the Dark Lord were to return he would be displeased that I have renounced him. While, he might forgive me after suitable punishment, he would also expect risky actions from Draco eventually, making him redeem the Malfoy family,

In the best of circumstances I would be a servant, useful for my wealth and influence, but in far diminished circumstances than presently. At worst neither I nor Draco would survive for long, both being expendable chess pieces.

Similarly he would not be pleased to know about your true motivations of pledging yourself to Dumbledore and wanting to save Harry Potter. It might work for a while, with you being a spy for both sides and supplying him with potions, but your long term odds of survival do not seem favorable to me."

Snape looked like he was considering attacking me, but knew that the Malfoy wards would make that a poorly thought out plan for that moment. He instead asked, "What would your plan be?"

I said, "Working with Albus Dumbledore for the narrow goal of preventing his return. I will ask you to meet me and him together."

I sent a note to Dumbledore, who accepted the meeting. We met in his office.

Dumbledore looked neutral and waited to hear what I had to say.

I said, "We have some interests in common and I would like to work together in a narrow way for a particular goal, that goal of preventing the Dark Lord from returning."

I then repeated what I had said to Snape about my assessment of what would happen if Voldemort should return.

Dumbledore asked, "What do you want from me?"

I answered, "Help in removing his horcruxes, one of which is within this castle, and his spirit, also within this castle, and a loyal Death Eater also hidden in theis castle."

Dumbledore showed some shock from these statements.

I continued, "He created five, plus one more accidentally, and had intended to create seven. They can be destroyed by fiendfyre, basilisk venom. Living horcruxes, of which there is presently one, can be destroyed with the death curse, but I do not know the means of preventing the death of the host.

I ask little of you to cooperate together. That you not challenge my legal defense of having been unwillingly part of Voldemort's Death Eaters and any associated crimes committed, nor seek to harm me, my family, or the status of my House."

Dumbledore asked, "And how can I be sure that you are not leading me into a trap, or have other ill intent?"

I answered, "Mutual wizard's oaths. We are not allies, we will disagree about many things. On this fight, we will have mutual goals and work together."

We came up with wording, and included Snape as well and made our oaths.

I presented a silk bag and said, "Here is the horcrux that I was entrusted. It is the diary of Tom Marvolo Riddle, and was made into a horcrux with the death of Myrtle Warren. I assume you can control fiendfyre?"

Dumbledore said, "Yes, we can do this together now."

We went to the edge of the forest and he destroyed the diary. We then went to the Room of Requirement and retrieved the Diadem and also destroyed it.

I told him about the possession of Quirrell and about Petegrew as a rat, the innocence of Sirius Black, and about Barty Crouch Junior. I said, "I would recommend containing Quirrell until the rest of the Horcruxes are destroyed, and in seeing what Gringotts and Egypt artifact experts might have to say about removing the horcrux from Potter."

I added "While we are cooperating, I will now bring up something I disagree with you, and may do so as a member of the Hogwarts Board of Governors. The Philosophers Stone should not be kept as bait in this school. You can surely keep it safe without setting up a series of challenges that many of your students will be able to solve. We already know who will attempt to get it, Quirrell."

Dumbledore was also shocked about how much I knew about his plans. He agreed to take down the traps and safeguard the stone instead of making it the end of an obstacle course.

Meanwhile in Slytherin, Draco Malfoy was relaying his father's orders about keeping a low profile and avoiding causing offense. The speech about how snakes strike seemed to work with them.

He had some difficulty keeping Pansy Parkinson from insulting non-Slytherins, but eventually convinced her that Slytherins use strategy not bluster. "We do not roar like lions, we strike like snakes. Whom we strike, we might never have said a cross word. We are polite, we think, we plan, we act in our interests, not out of need to be heard."

At the first broom class, as in canon, Neville Longbottom lost control and went up into the sky. Draco went immediately to rescue him. Harry Potter followed, but Draco got to him first.

Draco faced punishment. He explained to Snape that Heir Longbottom was now in his debt, and that it was a strategic move. Snape told him, "The actions of your aunt and uncle against his parents might tend to negate that."

Neither Draco nor Harry was invited to join their Quidditch teams in their first year.
