Bella's body convulsed as her wolf form began to recede. The red glow in her eyes flickered, dimming into something almost human, while her massive white fur rippled as it melted back into her skin. A sickening crack echoed through the air as her bones shattered and reformed, reshaping painfully into her human body. She let out a gasp—sharp and raw—her breath ragged, skin pale and glistening with sweat. Her entire form trembled violently, barely conscious, as her body continued to twist and bend under the strain of the transformation.
Jacob was already beside her, his heart pounding as he knelt close, though afraid to touch her. "Bella?" His voice was strained, trying to sound calm, but the raw fear in his eyes betrayed him. Her skin radiated unnatural heat, like a furnace out of control, and he recoiled slightly at the intensity of it.
Edward's gaze darted between Bella and Jacob, every muscle in his body tensed with panic. He could barely stand to watch her suffer like this. "She's burning up," he muttered through gritted teeth, his hand hovering just above her skin, unwilling to add to her pain. The icy air of the room felt like nothing compared to the searing heat pouring off her body.
Carlisle, usually composed in the worst of crises, was unnervingly silent as he moved quickly, his face drawn in concentration. "We need to cool her down now. Jacob, help me get her to the bathroom."
Jacob scooped Bella into his arms without hesitation, but the moment her fevered skin touched him, he winced. She was so hot, it felt like she could ignite at any moment. He rushed her into the bathroom, where Carlisle had already begun filling the tub with icy water. The bathroom was quickly becoming a cloud of steam, and Jacob could feel the heat wafting from Bella's limp body.
As Jacob lowered her into the tub, the water hissed against her feverish skin. Bella jolted, her body thrashing weakly in response to the sudden cold. Her skin, pale and flawless, glowed eerily in the light, as if something unnatural still churned beneath the surface.
Edward crouched beside the tub, his eyes wide with helpless fear. "What is happening to her?" His voice cracked, betraying the raw emotion he fought to contain. "She's already a vampire. Her body should have healed by now."
Carlisle frowned, his usually steady hands shaking as he added more ice to the water. "It should have. But…this is something I've never seen before." His voice was quiet, like he was sifting through old memories, trying to make sense of the impossible. "There are… ancient stories. Hybrids. A mix of vampire and wolf. I thought they were just legends, but…" His voice trailed off, unsure of how to put words to what he was seeing.
Edward's eyes flickered with disbelief. "Hybrids? That's impossible."
Carlisle glanced at him, the weight of his words heavy. "So I thought. But there are whispers of such creatures—ones the Volturi hunted to extinction. They didn't let any survive long enough to understand their nature."
Jacob, who had been pacing near the door, stopped in his tracks. His voice was tense, teetering between fear and fury. "Are you saying she's turning into… one of those things?"
Carlisle's silence hung in the air like a dark omen.
"She's becoming something we don't understand." Jacob's words were tight, his face grim. "This isn't a normal transformation. She's not like the wolves in my pack, or even like a vampire. It's like her body is being torn apart, trying to become both at once."
Edward's hand hovered over Bella's forehead, barely grazing her skin. His fingers were cold, but not nearly as cold as the dread sinking into his chest. "She's still burning up." His voice was thick with frustration, barely controlled. "We can't just sit here and do nothing."
"We'll need to train her," Carlisle said, his tone decisive. "When she's able, when her mind is clear again. We have to help her control this… whatever it is she's becoming."
Jacob shot Edward a hard look, anger simmering beneath the surface. "You think training is enough? You don't even know what she is anymore."
"We have no choice," Edward growled, his golden eyes flashing. "If the Volturi find out about this, they'll come for her. And when they do, they'll kill her. We can't let that happen."
Jacob's fists clenched, his knuckles white. He knew Edward was right, but that didn't make it any easier. "We need to get ready. Call everyone you know—every vampire, every ally. We need help."
Carlisle nodded solemnly. "I'll contact the oldest covens I know. We need more information, and we need time. But we also need to be prepared for the Volturi. They will come."
Suddenly, Bella let out a low groan, her body thrashing again. Her skin rippled, and her bones seemed to shift beneath her flesh as if something was crawling just beneath the surface. Edward moved toward her instinctively, but Jacob stepped between them, his hand outstretched. "Don't touch her!" he barked, his voice edged with urgency. "You'll only make it worse if her emotions get out of control."
Edward glared at him, but he knew Jacob was right. He forced himself to back off, though every fiber of his being screamed to hold her, to comfort her.
Jacob knelt beside Bella, his voice steady and calm. "Bella, listen to me. Breathe. Slowly." His words were a lifeline, and Bella's eyes fluttered open, hazy and clouded with pain. "Look at me," Jacob urged. "Focus on what you can see, what you can hear. Breathe in… feel the water, the cold. Breathe out."
Bella's body trembled, but her breathing began to slow, her mind latching onto Jacob's voice. Her eyes, though dull, found his, and she focused on the steadiness in his expression, grounding herself in his calm.
Slowly, her body began to shift again. But this time, it was different. Her bones snapped back into place with painful precision, her skin cooling, her breathing steadying. The monstrous form that had threatened to consume her was retreating, and within moments, she was human again—pale, weak, but unmistakably herself.
But the fever didn't leave her. She still burned with unnatural heat, her body unable to rid itself of the fire raging inside.
Carlisle sighed heavily. "This isn't over. She's stabilized for now, but her transformation isn't complete. We need to find out what she's becoming."
Edward stood, his face dark with resolve. "Then we call every vampire we know. We'll figure this out. And when Bella is strong enough, Jacob and I will train her. We'll teach her to fight. Because when the Volturi come, we'll be ready."
Jacob gave a grim nod. "Let's hope we have enough time."
