Chapter Forty-Three

The Search for Understanding

Over the next two days, Jiraiya had them search every hill and valley between the Black River and Fire Lake once again. It gave Naruto a chance to show the six-legged monster to Tayuya who said she wasn't impressed even when she was. She had pulled off its remaining horn to use as a walking stick and to poke at the ground. At the end of the second day, Jiraiya joined them as they sat around a campfire having found no sign of the base. Poking the fire with the horn from the crocodile-bug monster Tayuya looked defeated, throwing the horn to the side she said."Fuck if I know where to look next, I swear the map said it's just north of Fire Lake."

Standing up she started to pace around the fire kicking at the random stone or branch that was unlucky enough to be in her way. "It's not your fault, maybe the map was a decoy or something,', said Jiraiya knowing how his old teammate thinks it was more likely than not this was a false flag they were chasing. Jiraiya was willing to give it a couple more days but then it was time to head back to the village.

Picking up a rock that didn't move out of her way fast enough Tayuya threw it as hard as she could, it flew several hundred feet to smash into the face of a boulder, but it didn't bounce off or break into a thousand pieces but disappeared into a void. Spinning around she stomped over to Naruto and screamed, "Didn't you check that?", she said pointing to the offending rock face. It looked like every other large rock in the area and showed no signs of being used as an entrance.

Standing up and glaring at the little redhead he said, "Yes, on the first day and you helped! Remember!", he yelled, now noise to noise both Uzumaki were displaying their clan's well-known temper that had caused many a house having to be rebuilt. As sparks fly between them Jiraiya knows he has to do something quickly or this was going south real quick. He had seen these family fights last days and days as other members of the clan placed bets on the outcome.

"Hold on there you two, what time of day did you check it the first time.", said Jiraiya not wanting to rusk his life and get between them but this was important. "I don't know, the fucking morning I would guess as to its so fucking close to us.", said Tayuya losings some of her righteous anger.

Jogging over to the rock face Jiraiya slammed his hand to the ground forming a seal that quickly spread out around and over the twenty-foot-tall boulder. As the seal faded away a tunnel appeared big enough for two to walk side by side but no more. Naruto walked over and reached up to touch the top of the opening with no ill effect. Shrugging his shoulders he turned to look at the other two as they joined him to stare into the darkness.

"It had a time-release seal on it, it would have been solid rock but for this one hour of the day, that is unless you knew the seal that would open it.", said Jiraiya looking way too proud of himself for knowing his old teammates sealing rock face jutsu. They had used it in the war many times to get behind enemy lines and come up behind the shinobi on the front lines.

Standing at the edge of the tunnel Naruto looked and looked but could only see darkness, not a glimmer of light was to be seen. Picking up a rock he threw it into the darkness and waited for a couple of seconds before hearing it land and bounce down farther into the void. He could hear it rolling for quite some time as if rolling downhill along a hallway or tunnel.

Turning to his two companions he said, "Looks like it goes a long way down, we going in now or wait until morning?", looking to Jiraiya for guidance but Tayuya had other ideas as she used a fire jutsu on a large branch making a torch and walked into the tunnel.

"Come on let's get this over with, who knows what will come crawling out of here if we leave the door open.", she said heading deeper into the strangely carved tunnel. As they followed her in the tunnel it looked like it had been made by some large worm with sharp teeth as the rock all around them had long cut marks evenly spaced about a hand width apart.

"What would make this?", said Naruto running his hand down one of the many grooves cut into the stone. "There is a rock cutting snake about this big,", said Jiraiya holding his hands about 6 inches apart. "Knowing my old teammate he enlarged the poor animal for this purpose, it's how he justifies everything he does." Hoping said snake was long gone they started down into the darkness.

They walked almost 300 steps before the tunnel stopped going down, finding a turn I that after another hundred steps branded off into a large room full of work tables and strange lab equipment that Naruto or even Tayuya had no idea what they did or how they worked. The tunnel continued and had many opening to other tunnels cut into the stone leading into who knows how many other rooms such as this one.

Seeing something, Jiraiya walked over to a wall and placed his hand on a seal carved into the surface near the entrance, pushing a small amount of chakra into it the room was lit up by a swirling pattern of glowing lines across the ceiling.

"Now that we can see, let's look around for anything that can tell us what plans Orochimaru has.", said Jiraiya as he walked to the end of a lab table to open a lower storage cabinet, finding nothing he moved to the next. As they all searched every storage cabinet, crate, or box they could find, the only thing of interest was an old dirty lab notebook in a trash can.

Flipping over the blood-covered pages, Jiraiya tried not the think about what he could read about what was done to the people or animals in the notes, he was looking for a clue and had to stay focused but with every page, he only grew to hate his old teammate a little more.

"Did you learn anything,", ask Naruto looking over Jiraiya's shoulder, he could hear Tayuya kicking over the lab benches and destroying anything else she found offensive which at this point was everything in the room. The last time she was in a room like this it was full of the cries of the victims begging for anyone to kill them and end their pain. Now that Naruto had given her a second chance to see the world without a black soul of burning hate in her neck she wanted to do whatever she could to stop this madness.

Sealing the notebook away after checking every page Jiraiya said, "Not yet but I did notice that the first half of the book was written by someone named Kabuto but then it stopped and was continued by someone named Mariko."

"Kabuto is Orochimaru's right-hand man, that guy would do anything for that bastard.", yelled Tayuya from across the room making motions with her hands like she was sucking on something, seeing that they got her point she walked over to the other side of the room and kicked over another lab bench.

"OK, we aren't going to find anything here, let's look down these other halls.", said Jiraiya, seeing that Tayuya had effectively broken everything in the room he headed to the nearly black hole in the wall that was the tunnel leading to unknown horrors. "Hold up their old man.", said Tayuya, "Let Naruto send his clones down each of the tunnels, if there is a trap or some monster loose down there we can get an early warning. After all, isn't that what they are really for?"

"You're so smart Tayuya-chan,", said Naruto making a clone for each of the tunnels and sending them running down each one with a touch made from a broken chair leg courtesy of Tayuya's little rampage. No one noticed the little blush she had at being called Tayuya-chan.

They only had to wait ten minutes before Naruto made a sour face and said, "I found where they throw the dead bodies.", he said pointing to the tunnel in the corner. "OK, one down and 12 to go.", said Tayuya looking at Naruto who didn't look too good, whatever he saw must have been really bad for his clone to pop like that. She walked over and rubbed his back, "Sorry you had to see that,", she said knowing how bad it can be having had to carry the bodies to the pits before.

A couple of minutes more and three of the Naruto clones returned reporting all they found was empty rooms and prison cells down their three tunnels. It looked like they hadn't been used for weeks, maybe months by all the dust they found and all the cell doors being left open.

"That sounds about right from what I heard they were being abandoned and seeing how long I was at the leaf in my little cell.", commented Tayuya as they continued to wait. With nine more clones still to report in standing around was getting old and Naruto wanted to get moving. This waiting thing was not his style, he was a man of action, and he was getting really bored. A bored Naruto was just asking for trouble and Jiraiya was keeping a close eye on the blonde.

Two more clones returned and reported storage rooms, mostly empty but for one that had a collection of strangely shaped human bones in the shape of a throne. Naruto wanted to go see it again as it looked kind of cool in a sick kind of way but Tayuya stopped him from running off.

"Dam that hurt,", said Naruto, "Hey I didn't touch you, yet", said Tayuya looking him over for any sign he went and hurt himself when she wasn't looking. "No, that tunnel,", he said pointing to the left, "It leads to another lab bigger than this one but when my clone walked in some kind of trap cut it in two before it popped."

Having had enough of this standing around Jiraiya said, "OK, let's go check it out."

The new tunnel went down as they walked for ten minutes and then started going up again until they reached the point where Naruto said the clone ran into trouble. They found the still-burning torch against the wall, and it had a very large blade embedded into the wall above it.

Jiraiya had them stay back as he checked all the other walls and ceiling for any more surprises before turning back to Naruto, "Can you send another clone ahead."

The clone picked up its predecessor's torch and walked straight ahead whistling as it went knowing it would soon be smoke anyway. It made it into the newly found lab without any issues and turned around to wave at them.

Following the clone into the room, Jiraiya found the light seal and activated it as he did with the other lab. With the lights burning bright overhead they could see that this lab was much cleaner and had more machinery built into the floor and up into the roof far overhead. With pipes and tubes running everywhere they walked around looking for any sign of what this was for. The lack of lab benches and the restraints for the test subjects lead Jiraiya to believe this was more of a jutsu/chakra study lab. Learning how to mode the nature of chakra was where this had all started back at the leaf.

Naruto stopped and stared straight up and pointed at a crack in the ceiling that went from the blade in the wall up into the ceiling and down again to the other side, it was dripping water at a faster and faster rate. "I think we are under the lake and that doesn't look good.", he said rubbing the back of his head.

"Oh fuck", said Tayuya getting ready to run but Jiraiya made a series of hand signs and slapped his hand to the wall, "Great Toad slim Seal", he said as the crack was covered in white and green slims that stopped the water from dripping down. "That will hold for a couple of hours, so let's get a move on.", he said rushing to the first place he thought someone would hide a secret.

An hour passed and the only thing they found was more notebooks about merging the animal's chakra into a test subject when Tayuya yelled for them to come over and see something. It was a set of three large-foot-tall jars with pieces of a human body floating around in them, It looked like each had been chopped off the body and burned around the edges for show but it was the head that she was pointing at.

It was a head of a man that looked like he was in the center of hell and was still screaming for a mercy that would never come. She walked right up to the jar and with a grin gave the head the middle finger. "That is Kabuto, and a better end for this sick mother fucker I couldn't imagine."

"That's cold Tayuya,", said Naruto looking disappointed in her.

"You would agree with her kid of you had read that notebook, that was one sick and demented bastard.", said Jiraiya still looking for any clues on the shelves below the head. Finding a scroll that looked to be made from human skin turned into leather Jiraiya slowly rolled it open on the tabletop in front of the screaming head. With the other two standing beside him he read out loud.

"Next time you send one of your lackeys to kill my little brother I am going to burn your soul for all eternity, Itachi Uchiha." read Jiraiya.

"Now that sounds like my type of bitch.", said Tayuya hoping to see Orochimaru's head in a jar like this someday. Naruto wanted to say Itachi wasn't really that bad recalling how she felt in his arms but didn't think it would go over all that well with Tayuya. Leaving the scroll unrolled on the table they started their search for any more clues.

Soon a loud banging could be heard on the other side of the lab, Jiraiya checked the seal and could see it was still holding strong so with the others close behind he walked over to see what was making that sound.

There was a very large glass cylinder about four feet across and six feet tall that seemed to be connected to a lot of the pipes in the lab, it was filled with greenish water that had a steady stream of bubbles coming from the bottom. The sound was coming from the cylinder as a swirl of water hit the glass over and over.

Naruto walked over to the base of the large cylinder and looked at all the controls and turning to Tayuya pointing to one of the labels, said, "Whats a Suigetsu?"

"OH fuck, I remember hearing them talk about him", said Tayuya looking up at the glass with its swirling water and continuous banging she said, "He is a Mist shinobi, Orochimaru captured and experimented on him to learn his ability to liquefy himself. They said the Mist called Suigetsu a prodigy in the art of murder, he has a habit of chopping off his victim's limbs before beheading them." She gave him points for style but after spending so much time with Naruto she felt a little pissed off at the mist shinobi, 'Dam he is making me soft,', thought Tayuya. Back in the day, she would have asked Suigetsu for tips on his style but now all she can think of is how much he needs to pay for his deeds.

Not liking the idea of killing people like that, Naruto looked into the glass only to see a face appear in the water, it had a grin showing sharp pointed teeth and an evil gleam in its eyes. "Let me out and I will tell you everything I know.", said Suigetsu as he formed his whole body in the water. What they all could see was a lean-built young man of average height, straight white hair with a light-blue tint, almond-shaped purple eyes, he has pointed teeth with one that sticks out even when his mouth is closed. He had a crazy look in his eyes like everything he could see was prey to be hunted and killed.

"Not likely Kid,", said Jiraiya joining them at the control panel. "What could you know anyway being locked up here for all this time."

"I know where he is building his army.", said Suigetsu, "And all of them will have a modified curse seal.", he added hoping that would get him free. This old man and these two kids would be easy prey once he got out of this dam tube. He was doing his best not to show them how angry he was at being locked up for months in this dam lab. He was going to hunt them all down and kill them slowly for doing this to him.

"How would a fucker in a tube know that, we aren't stupid you know,", said Tayuya shaking her fist at Suigetsu. "Come on, let's go and see what's in the other rooms,", said Jiraiya turning around slowly to head to the next room.

"WAIT! I know how I can prove it, when that bastard Kabuto started showing up in those pickle jars Orochimaru assigned a new guy to work the labs and he liked to talk,", said Suigetsu. Turning back to the cylinder of bubbling water Jiraiya crossed his arms and waited. The seven ninja swordsmen of the mist were known for a lot of things but being good liars was not one of them, lets's see how good this wannabe is.

"Orochimaru found a new way to make a drug out of some Uzumaki blood when he uses it on the subjects before using the curse seal, they don't die, they only go crazy so Orochimaru can still use them as shock soldiers.", said Suigetsu hoping this would get them to open the pipes so he can kill them and get out of here.

"What you do you mean some Uzumaki blood?", said Naruto now very much interesting in what he had to say.

"He found some red-headed girl at a village he had burned to the ground a couple of years ago, when she got older he found out she can heal anybody using her blood.", said Suigetsu, he remembered the lab rats talking about it all the time about blood this and blood that but had no real clue on how it all worked.

Naruto turned to Tayuya, he seemed upset like she had betrayed her in some way. She said, "I heard of some new healing drugs but I had no idea it was from an Uzumaki, I swear I didn't know." Seeing the look on her face Naruto could see she wasn't lying to him.

"Prove it water boy.", said Jiraiya, taking the idea that there is another female Uzumaki very seriously.

They could see Suigetsu spinning around in his cage apparently looking at something before saying, "Did you see a black box about this big with silver studs on the corners.", he said holding his hands about two feet apart. "He would put it under one of the lab tables every night, it's where he stored the samples."

Getting excited that they would find another Uzumaki Naruto created fifty clones and had them search every lab in the complex. More than a couple of them came to a quick end when they walked into a trap and some found a wondering creature that had scales, horns, and large teeth but they didn't get a good look at it before being eaten.

They searched the current lab under the watchful eye of Suigetsu but Naruto didn't find anything more interesting than some notes on how to turn water into ice using a wind jutsu, Tayuya yanked it out of Naruto's hand when he started showing it to her. Scanning it over she pulled him into the nearest tunnel out of sight of Suigetsu.

"You have to learn this jutsu, right now.", she said to the confused blonde, "But … ", he started to say, "No Naruto, this jutsu is more important for you to learn right NOW dammit. Let the clones search.", with that she read over the notes one more time, the large warning at the bottom about this jutsu using too much chakra to work effectively made her smile. Watching to make sure he was making the right-hand signs she said, "Now when you use this put lots of chakra into it." They worked on the jutsu for a good twenty minutes before a clone covered in blood and guts came running into the room holding a black box over its head.

"Alpha squad is victorious", the blood-covered clone yelled as it slammed the box down on a lab bench, "Death is Honor!", the clone saluted Naruto by punching itself on the chest so hard it dispersed itself into a cloud of white smoke.

"You made an Alpha squad again?", said Tayuya giving Naruto a sideways look as she shook her head. "Not really, they just started to come out when I have an important mission.", said Naruto, he had a bit of a wide-eyed look on his face as he remembers the battle with a Bear Lizard, many a brave cloned died to bring them this box, the wall of honor was growing and he hoped their sacrifice was worth it.

"We got to talk about this later,", said Tayuya seeing the look on Naruto's face after the Alpha Squad leader dispelled, giving Naruto's arm a squeeze she joined Jiraiya as he opened the box that contained some books and what looked like vials of blood in little boxes labeled by there date and if the subject had eaten or not. Reading the message scroll on the top Jiraiya said, "This is a shipment of serums sent a month ago to test on the subjects here at the base, It says here, they are from the extracts from the female Uzumaki donor." Finishing reading the scroll he put it to the side and looked at the two young shinobi.

Digging around in the box Tayuya pulled everything out and did not find any other clues as to where the box came from, "I guess the water bastard was telling the truth.", she said shaking the box upside down to see if it had a false bottom. She finished her search by smashing the box repeated on the corner of the bench until it broke into hundreds of pieces.

Taking a couple of steps back from the infuriated little redhead Naruto looked at the large blue tube, "So just how do we get him out of there?", said Naruto, thinking that a Rasengan would make a nice hole. Tayuya went back over to the control panel and pointed at a big red button with the word 'Release' on it with words of warning around it about how dangerous this prisoner is, once again she questioned if Naruto could read.

Jiraiya traced the outlet to a one-inch pipe from the holding tank that emptied onto the floor at the other side of the lab. Seeing that Suigetsu had floated down to watch Tayuya next to the release button Jiraiya placed his hand on the floor below the outlet and said," Seal." The black lines of the seal flared out to cover a ten-foot area around the pipe before fading away.

Stepping out of the circle Jiraiya said, "OK, let the water boy out."

Pressing the button was anticlimactic as the water just flowed out of the small pipe into a nearby drain for a couple of minutes before Suigetsu reformed himself from the puddle and stood tall and proud in front of them, completely naked but for the shark-toothed grin on his face. He was thin with little if any muscle tone, it was his family jutsu that made him dangerous, without it he was nothing.

"Spill it, water boy, where is the base.", said Jiraiya, he was having fun with all the water jokes leaking out of him. Some would think he was a wet blanket at this point but they flowed out of him.

Pointing his finger at Jiraiya Suigetsu said, "Fuck you old man", making a water bullet shoot from his finger only to have it quickly fall to the floor with a splat. He tried again and again, each time the water bullet feel shorter and shorter.

"Keep it up their tinkle boy, you will be out of chakra soon,", said Jiraiya pointing down at the seal on the floor what was now glowing brighter with each attempted water bullet.

Screaming Suigetsu ran at the Sannin only to be pulled back to the center of the seal once he reached the edge. He could feel his chakra draining away like the water around him.

"Tell us what you know and if I believe you I will release the seal, If not then you will slowly evaporate once your chakra runs out.", said Jiraiya

"Who the fuck do you think you are old man!", yelled Suigetsu, "Once I get out of here I will tear your arms off before I cut your head off."

Everyone laughed at the idea, clearly Suigetsu had no clue who he was talking to, Jiraiya stood back and gave a little dance jumping from one foot to the other saying, "I am Jiraiya the great Hermit and Toad Sage of Mount Myoboku, one of the three Legendary Sannin of Konohagakure." Stopping to stare at the naked boy in front of him. "You may know my old teammate, he goes by the name of Orochimaru?"

"Tea country, west of the Herb Lake, there is a mountain that has a hook on top, at its base you will find a deep dry ravine, where it ends at the mountain is a base were Orochimaru keeps all of his most dangerous curses sealed monsters, I heard she is keep there with the other sources of the curse seals formula.", said Suigetsu as quickly as he could.

Looking down at the seal on the floor Jiraiya let out a laugh, "Nice work if you had lied the seal would have burned you to a nice toasty brown.", said Jiraiya turning to his two companions, "Let's go, we got a long journey ahead of us."

"Hey, wait a minute what about me,", screamed Suigetsu as they reached the exit.

"Don't use any chakra and the seal will end in a couple of days.", said Jiraiya over his shoulder as they exited the lab and headed up to the surface following the path they used to get into the base.

Walking out into the sunlight of a clear summer day they all realized they had been in the base all night and well into the morning. Digging around in his travel bag Jiraiya pulled out a scroll and unrolled it on the ground, with a quick hand sign he summoned out a pile of explosive tags, it looked like there were about a hundred of them in nicely wrapped bundles.

Pulling a bright red tag from the top he handed the rest to Naruto, "Make a bunch of clones and place these on the walls of every tunnel and room you can reach.", said Jiraiya, "Once they are done have them disperse,", holding up the reg tag he continued, "Using this I will set them all off at once." He had created these tags over the course of the last month knowing he would have to destroy the base once they found it.

"What about Suigetsu, we promised to release him.", said Naruto not liking the idea of breaking his word. 'It was his ninja way, everyone deserved a chance don't they?', he thought.

"Don't worry about that murdering little psychopath, he is a member of the Hozuki clan, they can turn themselves into the water and once the seal releases he will be able to find a way out.", said Jiraiya hoping he wasn't right but knowing Naruto he would try to save the bastard before blowing up the base if he didn't give him a reason why he didn't have to.

Making fifty or so clones Naruto sent them back into the base with a handful of tags each. Now that he knew the layout of the base, it took him no time to place the tags everywhere. Telling Jiraiya it was done the Toad Sage forces his chakra into the detonator tag. The whole forest in front of them lifted up a dozen feet before falling down into a large depression over a hundred feet deep as the base collapsed in on itself. The sound of rushing water could be heard as the lake flowed into the lower chambers and flooded every remaining room.

With a Roar, the bear-lizard came crawling out of the bottom of the new pit and looking around before heading off into the deep woods. Naruto looked at Tayuya who shrugged and said, "I am not chasing after that dam thinks so don't think about it."

"Come on old man, can't we go any faster.", said Tayuya as she raced behind Jiraiya just barely able to keep up but still pushing to go faster. Naruto followed behind just in case she fell or ran out of chakra, he was ready to catch her at any time.

"Tayuya-chan comes on, slow down your going to hurt yourself,", said Naruto as he got up beside her as she stumbled. Letting Jiraiya get ahead so they can talk Naruto asked. "So what has gotten into you?", Naruto's face was full of worry as he watched the little redhead try to catch her breath.

"You heard him,", she said pointing at Jiraiya's back as he moved farther ahead, "They have an Uzumaki girl, she must be a pureblood with that healing power," said Tayuya matching Naruto's speed as she was running out of chakra and didn't want to make herself sick again, she was pissed that her old stamina hadn't returned, she figured it was the removal of the curse seal the reduced her chakra so much.

"I know that but do you have a sister or something?", ask Naruto trying to understand why Tayuya who didn't care about anybody suddenly wants to rescue some unknown girl. Hell, she could be much older or younger who knows.

"No, thank god but with finding her then we have increased our gene pool by 100% and that means restoring the clan just got more feasible. Thank god it wasn't a guy, I don't know if I could have dealt with that.", she said, she looked like she was thinking a lot but for the hell of him, Naruto didn't understand what she was talking about. What is a gene pool and why would having two girls make it bigger.

"I don't get it, what clan are you restoring?", said Naruto, on hearing that Tayuya did stumble and would have fallen to the ground if Naruto hadn't caught her in his arms and landed on the ground. Letting the wriggling girl go she spun around and looked at him like he was beyond dense. "What clan?", she screamed in his face, she wanted to hit him but the way he ducked like he expected it she couldn't do it, she swore to herself once again she never would hit him no matter how much he deserved it, taking a deep breath she calmly said, "Our clan, the Uzumaki clan."

She could see the wheels spinning in his head as he froze and thought about it, he looked at her sideways and then rubbed the back of his head, then scratched his chin still thinking. Tayuya just let him work it out on his own, even if it would take all day, she would wait for him to get it.

"You mean a family?", he finial said coming to the most straightforward solution.

Holding back on a thousand things she wanted to call him she centered herself and said, "Yes a family, that is what a clan is, a really big family we just have to start with three for now if we can persuade this girl to join us."

Naruto backed up and sat on a fallen tree wiping his eyes as he looked at her.

"Are you crying?", said Tayuya walking over to him, more than a little surprised at his reaction.

"No.", he said still wiping his eyes trying not to look at her.

"It's Ok you know,", she said hugging him to her chest and rubbing the back of his head.

"I always wanted a family,", she heard him say into her shirt as he wrapped his arms around her rubbing his face on her breast. "Good, because you're going to get one.", she half laughed. "Now stop all this crying, you're getting my shirt all wet.", she said pushing him back and giving him a quick kiss on the forehead.

They both turn as they head the thump of Jiraiya landing next to them. "Everything OK, you guys disappeared on me back there.", said Jiraiya looking them over for any type of injury.

"No, No, we're good, let's get moving.", said Naruto standing tall and getting his emotions in check. Getting a grin from Tayuya that she wasn't going to say anything they jumped back into the treetops and headed south.

"Hey old man,", said Tayuya but in a more playful tone than she had ever used before, "Why we heading south, isn't Tea Country west?", she asked but for once not trying to start an argument. Naruto's reaction to her wanting to restart the clan had really hit her but in a good way.
