Chapter: The Sage

Amidst the tranquil backdrop of a normal sunny day in the village hidden in the leaves the sounds of a storm in the distance echoed through the open sky. The clear azure heavens belied the tempestuous atmosphere below, where many a curious shinobi glanced upward at the sporadic flashes of lightning emanating from Training Ground Seven. Those glimpses of electrical energy elicited little more than indifferent shrugs from the passing ninja, who went about their day. Team Seven, a unit famed for its turmoil and internal troubles, was best left alone unless under direct orders from the Hokage to speak to them and even then it was best to do it over ramen.
The laundry list of issues plaguing the squad was far too extensive to list, and the betting pool concerning which of its members might end the other's life was growing with each passing day.
Should a bystander peer into the ravaged field, they would witness Sakura sitting on a log amidst the desolation. She was pouring a canteen of water over her vivid pink hair, a desperate attempt to cool herself and extinguish the smoldering embers that had ignited within her pink locks. Her outfit lay in tatters, beyond any hope of repair, giving any onlooking a clear view of her figure and one of her renowned gloves was nowhere to be seen, having become ensnared deep in the wood of a scorched tree when Sasuke dodged one of her incoming attacks.
With a vigorous shake of her head to dispel the water droplets and stray embers, Sakura raised her gaze. What met her eyes was the intensifying clash between Naruto and Sasuke as they flew from one side of the training ground to another. Each of their blows resonated through the ground with a deafening force that mimicked thunderstorms and made the smaller debris jump from the ground.
This battle was more than mere physical combat as taunts and insults were exchanged with each strike. Naruto's determination blazed in his cerulean eyes as he elegantly weaved through Sasuke's sword strikes, his words carrying a blend of concern and sarcasm. "Marrying your sister, Sasuke? That's quite the commitment to the Uchiha bloodline, but aren't there other ways?"
In response, Sasuke's Sharingan flared, a mirror of his internal turmoil, as his voice bore a frosty, chilling edge. "We've made our choices, Naruto. Itachi and I are dedicated to securing the future of our clan, something you can't comprehend. It would take ten generations to bring the Sharingan back to full strength if I married outside of the clan." The scene unfolded with an electric intensity, a storm of emotions and conflict amidst the clear sky.
Their physical blows mirrored the tension between them, every punch, every kick, was an outlet for their unspoken conflicts.
Naruto scored a solid hit, and Sasuke grunted in pain. "Itachi must be thrilled to marry her brother for the sake of the clan."
Sasuke's eyes blazed with fury as he retaliated, his voice dripping with disdain. "Don't pretend to understand, Naruto."
The earth quaked under the intensity of their jutsu. They were no longer just sparring; it was a clash of convictions, a clash of ideals.
Naruto couldn't hold back, his feelings fueling his relentless pursuit of trying to find some understanding. "Sasuke, I know you want to protect the clan, but there has to be another way. This path you've chosen… Even if she waited to she can only have so many children."
Sasuke's response was swift and unyielding as he met Naruto's Rasengan with his Chidori, the clash creating a blinding storm of energy. "There's no other way. You're just too naive to understand, Naruto. The clan must remain pure or the Sharingan will fade into obscurity."
"I know one thing Sasuke, what you are doing to keep the madness of the Uchiha clan intact. At least take another wife, Let some new blood into the clan.", said Naruto jumping out of the way of another lightning bolt.
The battle escalated further, and with each exchange of blows, the ground seemed to tremble with the trees in the vicinity swayed from the sheer force of their combat.
"Dam you Naruto, you don't understand the pain of not having a family.", yelled out Sasuke falling back on his oldest argument.
Naruto continued to dodge and weave through Sasuke's relentless attacks. "I might not fully comprehend your pain, Sasuke, but I can't let you make the same mistakes all over again. Look at me! I have two great wives and ten children, don't you want that in your life?"
Sasuke, his eyes burning like molten fire, responded with a surge of power that sent Naruto's clones scattering. "Your naivety won't protect the village. The Uchiha must rise again. We can not allow the Sharingan to be diluted by weak blood."
Their confrontation reached a fever pitch as both warriors pushed themselves beyond their limits. The very landscape bore the scars of their battle, with cracks forming in the ground and shockwaves radiating outwards reaching the village halls and beyond.
Naruto didn't back down, using his signature Shadow Clone Jutsu to surround Sasuke, creating a storm of clones that pressed their assault. "I refuse to let you lead us down a path of darkness again, Sasuke!"
Sasuke, undeterred, met the clones with a series of lightning-quick sword strikes, his Chidori crackling with electrifying intensity in his other hand. "Naruto, you've always been a simpleton. You don't know the weight of our legacy. The power we can hold is as great as that fox you carry around. We are the balance to the tailed beast."
Their fierce sparring session had transcended into a war of words, with every punch and jutsu serving as a testament to their complex history and their unyielding resolve to forge their own paths in the world of Shinobi. The earth trembled, and the sky seemed to darken as they continued to confront one another amidst the chaos.
As the dust settled around them, both men were breathing heaving as they were evenly matched. But even now neither one would back down as they started to make hand signs for another attack.
"I... Will... Show... You... The power of the Uchiha bloodline," Sasuke declared between gasps. He prepared to unleash another formidable assault. But before Naruto could even devise a countermeasure, Sasuke abruptly straightened, only to collapse face-first into the ash and dirt. Naruto's eyes widened in surprise.
What had happened became evident as Naruto looked to see Sakura holding a sturdy log in her hands, her swing having knocked Sasuke unconscious.
"God damn it, you two talk more than the old ladies at the hot springs," Sakura grumbled, her tone filled with exasperation. She pulled her dress back up over her shoulder, having slipped down during the intense exchange, affording Naruto a clear view of her chest. Not that she minded but now was not the time and for sure wasn't the place.
"Sakura-chan, ", yelled out Naruto as he moved over and rolled Sasuke onto his back.
As the dust settled from their intense battle, Naruto turned to his teammates, still breathing heavily from their showdown. He wore a mischievous grin as he asked, "You want to go get Ramen?" With a casual motion, he pulled Sasuke up off the ground and hoisted him over his shoulder.
Sakura rolled her eyes, clearly unimpressed. "Yeah, right. Looking like this, are you crazy or just dumb?" Once more, she let her dress slip down, teasingly, before swiftly pulling it back up to cover herself.
Naruto chuckled, unfazed by Sakura's antics, and started walking in the direction of the Uchiha compound. "Oh, I think it would be fun. I'm sure old man Teuchi would love the view."
But before Sakura could act on her obvious intention to kick Naruto in the ass, two ANBU operatives landed just outside the training ground. They approached with an air of authority both ready to run at the first sign of danger.
"The Hokage wants to see you, now," one of them declared, looking directly at Naruto. The other ANBU remained at a distance, prepared for any potential trouble from Team Seven.
Naruto's curiosity piqued, he inquired, "Just me?" Receiving a nod of confirmation, he tossed Sasuke over to Sakura. She, once again, had to let go of her dress to catch her unconscious teammate, letting it fall around her waist in the process.
"I am going to kill you, Naruto!" Sakura's exasperated voice echoed through the training ground as Naruto, along with the ANBU, swiftly leaped into the trees and made their escape, leaving Sakura fuming in their wake.
"Is she always that way?", asked one of the Anbu as they dropped to the ground and started walking down the main street.
"Nah she is usually a lot meaner.", said Naruto right before entering the Hokage tower and running up the steps taking three at a time.
Naruto's entrance into the Hokage's office was anything but subtle. Bursting through the door, he found his sensei, Jiraiya, standing by the window, and the Fifth Hokage, Tsunade, occupied with paperwork. The towering stack of documents on her desk was a testament to her seemingly never-ending battle with the paper monsters of bureaucracy.
"About time you got here, brat," Tsunade remarked, leaning back in her chair. Jiraiya shifted from the window to sit on the edge of the desk, his presence adding to the seriousness of the moment.
Naruto, however, couldn't resist his usual irreverence. He grinned and said, "Hi Baa-chan, what do you and pervy sage want?" His laughter echoed in the Hokage's office, knowing that conversations in this room were typically far from light-hearted. On the occasion that Tsunade was in a bar, she was a laugh a minute with all her stories, but in her office, business took precedence, most of the time.
"Naruto, it's time for you to do your Sage training, ", said Jiraiya, blunt and to the point as Naruto didn't take hints or anything short of a hit to the head to understand something.
"Now that you have established your clan and the family is growing it's best if you go now. I know you have already killed most of the Akatsuki but their leader Pain is still out there and recruiting new members. This isn't going to get any easier.", said Tsunade
"OK Pervy Sage, let's do this.", Naruto's enthusiasm was surprising as the two war veterans looked at each other.
"You know this could take months even maybe a year.", said Jiraiya now in the strange position of talking Naruto out of rushing off to do sage training.
"Whatever it takes I will do it!", said Naruto throwing his fist in the air as if to prove a point before noticing there wasn't anyone looking and shyly put his hand back down.
"Do you have any idea what is going on?", said Jiraiya looking over his shoulder at Tsunade completely missing Naruto's display.
"I haven't a clue, maybe something is going on at home,", replied Tsunade before turning to Naruto.
"You know you can tell us anything, right? So what's going on?", she added in her most motherly voice that wasn't really all that motherly.
Naruto paused for a second as they watched the wheels turn in his head as he put his thoughts together then dropping into one of the chairs in front of the desk he let out a long sigh, "It's like this, Baa-chan, with Karen running the clan and Tayuya taking over the household I don't have anything to do. And I was thinking if I leave now I can put off marring Temari, don't get me wrong, she is great and all but with the three of them all in the same house I won't have a chance."
"The kids got a point.", said Jiraiya even as he took out his little notebook to write down some storylines. This was gold, pure gold for his next book.
"You'll have to take your sage training seriously. This isn't a vacation to escape from your wives; you married them, after all," Tsunade said, her disapproval evident. The idea of Naruto and the old pervert embarking on a journey alone didn't sit well with her.
"Don't you worry, Baa-Chan? I'll train hard, and when I get back, I can take that Hokage hat off your head," burst out Naruto, his enthusiasm shining through. "I mean, it's about time you let someone else wear the Hokage robes, and you and Pervy Sage can have some time alone."
With those words still echoing in the room, Naruto jumped out of his chair, narrowly evading the bottle Tsunade hurled at him. The chair's back exploded as the bottle embedded itself into the far wall leaving a hole in the back of the chair. Laughter filled the room as they all chuckled at the notion of either of the Sannins taking a vacation from the shinobi life.
"See, Baa-Chan, it's time for you to retire; you're getting slow," Naruto teased, right before Tsunade bounced another bottle off his head, knocking him out cold.
"Do you have a plan, or are you just going to let the toads do all the work?" Tsunade asked as Jiraiya checked that Naruto was still breathing.
"Ma and Pa wouldn't let me off that easy," the old sage replied with a chuckle as he moved back to the desk. "My biggest concern is the fox. Naruto hasn't fully made peace with him yet, and without any outlet for the fox's more amorous needs, it could derail the training."
"Always thinking with Little Jiraiya, aren't you," Tsunade grumbled as she began to sift through paperwork on her desk remembering her genin days with Jiraiya.
"You never complained before. What's gotten into you this morning? You don't usually try to kill your shinobi until after lunch," Jiraiya said, trying to put a smile on his old teammate's face, although he failed miserably as she glared at him over the papers in her hands.
"The brat is right," Tsunade admitted in a low voice. "I don't want to sit behind this desk until I drop like Sarutobi. Our sensei was a great shinobi, but many of the things he did were short-sighted at best and only pushed the problems to the next generation. With all his talk of peace, he allowed some of the most horrendous acts by Danzo. We have to allow the next generation to do better."
"They are still too young. Most of Naruto's generation have yet to make Jonin. It will take many more years to train them to become leaders. We can't just hand over the village to a bunch of teenagers, no matter how prestigious their families are."
"What happened to you, Jiraiya? You were always the one dreaming of a chosen one that would bring peace," Tsunade responded.
"Peace, yes, of course. But like in war, peace takes more than one side to declare it. Look at what happened to the Uzumaki; they all talked about peace but did nothing to improve the world around them. By cutting themselves off from the world on that island, they bragged about how better they were without the outside world. They practically asked to be attacked," he said.
"You know as well as I do that jealousy and inequity only breeds resentment and hate. Unless we can find a way to bring economic equality to all the great lands, one will always attack another," he finished, punctuating his words with a thud as he hit the top of her desk.
"Looks like you've been thinking about this an awful lot," the Hokage noted as she put all her papers to the side.
"Yes, yes, I have," Jiraiya said, dropping down into the chair that Naruto had occupied just a few minutes earlier.
"So, what solution have you come up with?" Tsunade asked.
"The social construct of the poor staying poor with no hope to advance and the rich staying rich using their connections and influence has to change," he replied.
"The forceful transfer of wealth will only bring a moment of happiness before the uneducated poor spend it all and find themselves back where they started. The rich are wealthy not only because of their connections but because they have learned how to be rich. That will not change," Tsunade argued, leaning back into her chair.
"I know the difference between giving someone a fish and teaching them how to fish. We have to change the very systems we live by so that the least among us feel they can reach the top. To start with, the academy only graduates the children from the wealthy clans. Why? Because they train their children long before they enter the academy and for years after. That has to change. Three years to learn a jutsu or two, taught by the least trained Chunin, that has to change," Jiraiya explained, just as Naruto started groaning on the floor as he began to wake up.
"What are you guys talking about?" Naruto asked as he sat up, rubbing his head. The large bump on his forehead was quickly fading as the fox did its job.
"Oh, nothing. Just on how to change the world," Jiraiya joked.
"Cool, can I help?" Naruto asked, not fully grasping the humor in the idea of changing the world.
"Don't worry about it now, brat. Once you take over this office, you can continue what I've started," Tsunade said, already contemplating ways to reform the school system to produce more well-rounded shinobi. Feeding their young into the war machine of missions outside the village before they had reached Chunin had to stop.
"You mean it, Baa-Chan?" Naruto shouted the realization that his dream of becoming Hokage was one step closer filling him with exhilaration.
"Yes, but you need a lot of training before you take this hat, training on how to be a leader and not just on cool jutsu to blow things up," Tsunade added.
"Whatever it takes, Baa-Chan, whatever it takes," Naruto said with a gleam in his eye. He was determined to become the leader the village needed, and alongside his clan, they would work together to bring changes to the world.
"Go! Runoff and ask your wives if you can go become a sage.", laughed out Jiraiya as Naruto headed for the door.
"Come on Pervy Sage, it's not that bad.", yelled out Naruto as he tried to think of a way to get them to agree to let him go.
The two Sannin glanced at the door, as a shadow stealthily emerged from the corner and approached them.
"Isn't spying on the Hokage one of your people's jobs?" Tsunade remarked, her voice tinged with sarcasm. The shadows dissipated, revealing Ino in her standard purple ninja attire, wearing a sly smile.
"I wanted to try out this new jutsu the guys taught me, and who better to test it against than the Hokage," Ino explained before shifting the conversation to a less mundane topic of root spying on the Hokage and most of the village.
"Just how long will Naruto be gone?"
"It took me four months to learn the sage technique, but with Naruto's clones and his determination, it shouldn't take all that long. I'd say a month," Jiraiya responded, momentarily setting aside his perverted persona when conversing with the provocatively dressed head of Root even knowing that his spies were spying on her spies in a never-ending loop.
Grinning from ear to ear, Ino turned to leave. "In that case, I have some very important business to take care of before he leaves." She had taken only three steps from the desk before fading away into the shadows.
Tsunade, somewhat puzzled, shrugged. "Don't look at me; I don't know what she's talking about either." She then turned her attention back to her paperwork, the curse of every Hokage.

Naruto took his time heading back to the clan compound, making a quick stop at the ramen stand to check in with old man Ichiraku and his daughter Ayame. The fact that he also devoured ten bowls of ramen had nothing to do with him stopping there first.
Now that the ramen gods were sated, he continued on his way to the Uzumaki building. He entered from the back to avoid running into Sakku. She was a wonderful woman and had a talent with her tongue, but he didn't want to get distracted again.
Upon bursting into his penthouse apartment, he looked around and found the main room empty. He called out, "Hey, anybody home?" Not receiving a response, he decided to take a quick shower. Training with Sasuke that morning had added a whole new layer of dirt to his already grubby ninja outfit.

"They must be out or taking care of the kids," he mumbled to himself. He strolled over to the large glass doors, taking in the beauty of the village in the late afternoon sun. However, his attention was drawn to a delicate foot at the edge of his sight.
Curious, he headed out to the balcony and discovered the foot belonged to someone reclining on one of his lounge chairs. The person was wearing a dark blue bikini and had a sun hat pulled low over her face.
The woman lounging on the chair possessed long, shapely legs that seemed to stretch for miles. Her bikini top generously showcased a sizeable chest, accentuated by the snug fit of the swimwear.
