Elizabeth had been to the PCPD more than a few times. She had been the wife of a PCPD officer first, then detective. That did not even count how many times she and Lucky had been hauled in by Taggert by teenagers for random reasons. But as she had gotten older, it had been less. But she did not hesitate to follow him down there when he had gotten into a bar fight. Okay, he had not gotten into a bar fight as much as he had gotten punched. She was just going to finish their conversation and make sure he did not have any broken bones. That was what she told herself. Denial was strong in Elizabeth, of late.
She ignored many things, like the way her heart skipped a beat sometimes, when she saw Lucky. It was the same feeling as she had when she was fifteen. Ever since he had told her that he was staying, she had let herself smile more around him.
Trying to figure out who was behind these deaths was important and Lucky had been a good detective. Who was she kidding? She and Lucky had been acting as detectives since they were teenagers. She could remember them trying to find her attacker, thinking it was poor Mr. Murty, how she had stabbed Lucky. She will never forget the horror at realizing that she had stabbed Lucky, her best friend. He was the only person she had let herself trust at the time. She had been so broken at that time in her life but trying to find her attacker and having him with her every step of the way helped her heal. He never judged her when she did things like tearing her room apart, running away from him trying to kiss her. He was just Lucky, just like now.
When he had left so many years ago, they had lost who they were, and he had kept calling them toxic. But since Christmas especially, he was just Lucky, and she was Elizabeth. It was niceā¦but Cody really had gotten a punch in on him.
She had not hesitated to patch him up, to lean closer to him to do so. Leaning close to him still tempted her. She thought about going to see him at Charlie's tonight, but she had told him that she was staying in, to do laundry. Laundry. Had she really said laundry? But that did not mean that she did not think about him. They were supposed to go to Turning Woods tomorrow, anyway.
When she had been patching up his face, she found herself remembering the time not long after their first kiss when he told her that he could count the number of stitches on baseball from center field, but he still liked how she looked up closely. There was something happening between them that she was not admitting to herself yet.
The way that he helped her put on her jacket, smiled at her, the way he was protecting her, it made her feel things, things that were supposed to be dead and gone. But the thing was she still felt them.
It was hard to let herself feel them though. When they had looked for Emily's blackmailer, they had already been falling for each other, but Elizabeth wondered if she and Lucky would ever need to fall in love, or if they always loved each other. She was crazy and he did not feel the same about her at all. She just saw things that were not there. But he was so willing to protect her.
She was trying to fold laundry, and it was late. Aiden should have been home soon, but he was not. But she knew that Charlie's was closing. She did not want to go there and watch Kristina do whatever she was trying to do, so instead, she sent him a text message and asked him if he wanted to come by and discuss their strategy.
She went back to straighten up, expecting him to reply or not, later. They even did good investigations with the drug ring. If she were a detective and not a nurse and he had ever been meant to be a police officer, they would make good partners. That was a thought, wasn't it?
Not two minutes later, there was a knock at her door, and she wondered who it could be this late. Opening her door, there he was. There was Lucky.
"I just texted you asking you if you wanted to come by."
He held up his phone. "Yeah, I know. I decided to do just that, stop by. Shall we strategize?" She smiled at him and moved to the kitchen. "I will grab coffee. We must get this right since you made such an impression last time."
"Cookies too?"
She poked her head around. "How did you know that we have cookies?"
"I may have hacked into the bro chat and saw Aiden told the boys he made like 12 dozen."
Elizabeth had to stop herself from laughing. "You hacked into our sons group chat? Did they catch you?"
"Well yes, but they will not let me in, otherwise. You know I have those talents!"
Elizabeth thought to herself, with a smile. "I remember. But yes, get comfortable. Give me ten minutes, okay?"
"I can't wait."
She had to admit that she was okay with their son being late. He had texted her. She had no clue what was going on with her and Lucky. They were just investigating, right?
