Stone Kole in Endless Summer
Stone Kole is one of the concept art characters for the movie that would eventually become Zootopia. Although the fennec fox would be changed into Finnick, Stone later appeared in the Official Zootopia Handbook surfing the waves along the Sahara Coast. This story is a collection of short tales about the beach-bumming fox and his friends.
Please note: I had written several short stories which have now been removed from the site and incorporated into this story as chapters.
"Dude, the Sahara coast is always cranking. They're always coming at me, like 'Raaahh', and I'm amped in the pit. And then I'm like 'Boom, boom, boom! Shaaaaaah!' They're the most awesome-possum waves in Zootopia. Paws down, dude! Paws down!"
In 1966, Bruce Brown's classic surfer movie Endless Summer debuted as an award-winning documentary about a group of champion surfers' adventures while traveling worldwide in search of the "perfect waves." That movie, along with S.R. Bindle's epic Surfer Dude inspired me to write a series of stories about a fennec fox named Stone Kole.
Zootopia: Stone Kole in Hang Ten! - Stone Kole is Zootopia's three-time small board champion surfer and all the fennec fox wants to do is surf the waves. He soon finds out that life is very complicated when he seeks his father who never knew he was born, comforts his best friend who has been rejected by his family because of his sexuality, and deals with the fact that he is in love with a cat. (Completed - Rated T)
Zootopia: Stone Kole in Dark Paradise – Zootopia's favorite small board surfer and his pals travel to an exotic tropical island to be in a movie, but the gang soon learns that everything is not as idyllic as it seems. On top of that, the fennec fox is in love with a sand cat and gets caught up in the WildeHopps mixed-species controversy. This story contains voodoo, zombies, and there's also a pesky pirate ghost too! (Completed - Rated T)
Zootopia: Stone Kole in Storm Warning – Zootopia's favorite small board surfer is getting married, but things turn sinister when his brother Storm is released from jail with a contract to kill their father Finnick. This is the third story of the Stone Kole Series. (Completed - Rated M)

Chapter 1: Surfers of the Big Z
Stone and his friends hang out at the city campground as they wait for a special night's events to unfold.
For your listening pleasure with this chapter, I suggest the song With Me by Sum 41.
It was late in the evening, and the city campground was mostly quiet. In front of a green canvas tent, a group of friends sat around, waiting for the right moment. Stone Kole contentedly leaned back in a worn lawn chair and the fennec fox had to smile while he looked around. Wrapped in the three-time surfing champion's arms was his girlfriend Karen and the pretty sand cat in the green and white bikini began to softly purr when he idly stroked the fur just below her left ear. She stirred slightly and slowly rubbed her cheek against his bare chest fur, marking him as hers.
Across the bonfire's flames, a thin timber wolf in a yellow sleeveless tee shirt and a pair of blue swim trunks was sitting cross-legged in the sand while he softly strummed on his worn guitar. Leonard Howlingsworth was nicknamed Sandfly and the surfer was the son of the owner of the largest surf shop along the Boardwalk. Unlike, Stone Kole, Sandfly was not a professional surfer but had great talent riding the surf.
The fox's large ears perked up when he heard a chuckle nearby and he glanced over to see that Cooper was whispering to his boyfriend, Billy. The other small wallaby wrapped his arm around Cooper's neck before giving him a kiss. Stone had met Cooper years ago and the two had become best friends, even sharing this campsite during the surfing season and a trailer across the strait near the quaint village of Seaside during the off-season. Unlike Stone, who had grown up along the nearby beach, the wallaby was from a wealthy family that lived on Outback Island. His father was a well-known and very culturally conservative, businessmammal who had rejected his son after finding out that Cooper was gay. Fleeing his overbearing family problems, the young wallaby had taken to the surf for a living and had become a fairly good professional surfer.
The idyllic moment was spoiled when a huge belch came from a mountain of a bull before he tossed away the metal container he had clutched in his hooves. "Hey, Stoney," he called out to the much smaller fox. "Do you got any more of this beer?"
"Red, that was a whole keg you just guzzled down!" another voice exclaimed in a rather cultured tone. Sitting nearby was a mongoose in an expensive-looking designer polo shirt and khaki shorts, he also wore a red fez. Unlike the other surfers, he was sipping red wine from a glass goblet, and his girlfriend looked very out of place for a campfire; she was definitely more of the country club type with her canary yellow sundress. Like Cooper, the mongoose was from a wealthy family but when he decided to become a professional surfer, his doting parents not only bought him top-of-the-line gear but also hired the best instructors. He soon became one of Stone's most talented rivals.
"Hey, it ain't my fault that they make the kegs for you pipsqueaks so small!" the bull grunted. "So, Boney, whatcha drinking?"
"The name is Bonaparte, not Boney, and this is a nice bottle of imported burgundy," the mongoose answered. His companion quickly snatched up the bottle and moved it out of the bull's reach while she cast him a look of disgust.
"I don't drink wine!" Red grumbled as he stood up and stretched before he hiked up the ill-fitting pair of black cotton shorts he was wearing. "I'm gonna find me something else to drink," he added before he lumbered down a nearby trail and into the darkness.
Stone just shook his head and closed his eyes, trying not to nod off into sleep.
"They are about to start!" a voice urgently called out and Reggie excitedly dashed into the campground, the meerkat was waving his flashlight toward the trail which wove from the campground to the beach. Of the three friends, Reggie was the youngest and most brash. Often Stone and Cooper would have to come to his rescue when he said the wrong thing to the wrong person. On a surfboard, however, the meerkat was almost the fox's equal. "Come on, you can get a better view from the beach!" he added.
Karen gave a slightly disappointed-sounding hiss when the fox began to sit up. "Come on, Babe, we can snuggle anytime and tonight is a special night," he said.
With a sigh, she stood up and he grasped her paw before they began walking down the sandy trail. Once past the dunes, the two lovers emerged onto the beach. The sound of the surf, with the wave tops glistening white in the moonlight, calmed Stone's ears.
Distant music could be heard from the businesses down the beach. This was an area of the coast advertised as the Golden Strand, but to the locals, it was affectionately referred to as just The Strand. Various buildings lined The Strand's famous Boardwalk, a lovingly cared-for wooden plank walkway that separated the touristy businesses from the sandy beach and the sea beyond. Bars, photo galleries, candy shops, and numerous tawdry souvenir shops were lined up along the walkway, above them were condominiums, apartments, and hotels. In the center of it all was the Grand Carnival with its exciting rides, game booths, and food stands. Towering above everything was a huge Ferris wheel and a vintage wooden roller coaster, with their colorful bright lights acting as a beacon for all those seeking adventure. Further up the coast, the fox could see the twinkling white lights of the ritzy village of Sandy Cove, with its luxury condominiums and its protected harbor which bristled with sailboats and fancy yachts. Even further north, beyond the harbor, he knew there were the icy waters of the Polar Straits, and looming even beyond that, was the Great Wall which separated the snow from the sand.
Suddenly there was a loud boom and the sky above them was filled with sparkling color as fireworks began exploding overhead. "Happy Zootopia Day," he whispered into the sand cat's ear before he lovingly nuzzled her neck and clung to her like a fox who found his true love.
