Morning came without pomp and circumstance. In fact, it came without much routine at all. As the sun broke the remaining dark clouds away, the stray rays made their way into the Thunderkittens' shadowed refuge.
It painted across Kit's face first and her eyes fluttered open to her brother's shoulder. The blanket from the Wollos had been warm enough, given the rainy night, but without somewhere soft to lay, she'd awoken with a terrible ache in her neck.
As she sat up straight and looked around, her heart sank. Some naive, hopeful aspect of her heart had prayed she would awake to the smell of Snarf's cooking, Cheetara returning from an early run and Panthro tinkering with the Thundertank.
The dead silence was unnerving.
She stood, stretched, and walked out into the shy sunlight, wrapping her arms tight about her body. A chilly morning wind, left over from the storm no doubt, rippled her hair.
"Tygra." She spoke it out loud. "If it was really you yesterday, I need you and the others. I need to know what to do." She turned her head downward, as if ashamed. "I know WilyKat and I are annoying sometimes, pestering about wanting to be older, to be given more responsibility. But…I'm scared. I don't…know what to do. What do we do?"
She stood there, alone amid the wind. And though she couldn't say with certainty that she felt anything different, there was a deep seated feeling that she wasn't alone.
She'd never been keen to extra senses or feelings but she knew, plain as day, that the others were there beside her. Somehow. Some way.
Returning to her brother, she gently nudged him. He awoke without much issue, yawning a bit. After rubbing the sleep from his eyes, he stood and the twins moved out into the sun, sitting across from one another.
"So…now what?" Kit started, taking a bit from the candy fruit. Not the best breakfast in the world but better than nothing. Her brother finished the last bite of the breadfruit.
Much as WilyKat wanted to say he had no idea, that wasn't going to fix things. So, instead, he said, "What is it Tygra always says?"
"Breathe. Assess. Plan." Kit replied immediately. "I think we've got the breathing down. So…assess. What do we know right now?"
"Mumm-ra. Sone kind of magic wiped the others and the Lair from Third Earth. But they're not dead. I can't say how I know they but…"
"No." Kit agreed. "They're not. I know what you mean." She frowned. "So, how do we find out what happened?"
WilyKat considered. "The Black Pyramid?"
Kit didn't try to suppress her shudder. "Maybe. But we might be walking right into whatever spell he cast. This is bigger than anything we've ever seen him do. Even the Norvag Naj."
They went silent again.
WilyKit finally stood. "But if that's what we have to do. Fine! I want answers. And that might be the only place we can find them!"
She turned to walk toward her space board but froze. For some reason, her legs felt heavy. Restrained almost. She could walk if she pushed it but something was definitely against this idea.
"I don't think that's a good idea." WilyKat said simply. "You and I both know anytime we end up in the Pyramid, we need help."
WilyKit growled under her breath. "I know but we have to do something! Anything!" She uttered a mild curse in Thunderian and sat back down.
WilyKat said nothing. There was nothing to say.
OOO
"We're right here." Lion-o placed his hands on WilyKit's shoulders or at least made the gesture. "You're not alone."
It was infuriating to be unable to offer some form of comfort, some advice. To see their fear and not be able to give even a squeeze of a side hug. It was pure torture.
Cheetara spoke softly, kneeling next to WilyKit, even if the girl couldn't see her. "It's alright to be afraid, WilyKit. But you and your brother are Thundercats. I know you can figure this out."
Bengali nodded and trotted by the kitten's side as she turned back toward her brother. "That's right. You two are our cunning masters. If anyone can figure this out, you two can!"
As the twins began to discuss, the older Thundercats felt a swell of pride.
"Looks like they do take your lessons to heart, Tygra." Pumyra said with a soft smile. "Look at them."
Panthro chuckled. "They may be mischievous but they're clever. Good students when it suits them."
The Thundercats gathered about their youngest, trying to offer what support they could over the dimensional barrier.
"The Black Pyramid?"
Everyone tensed at WilyKat's suggestion.
"No!" Pumyra said immediately, moving to be in-between the twins, as if that might boost her presence. "No! You can't go alone! If Mumm-ra can do this, he'll be more than ready for you!"
Thankfully, WilyKit protested. "Maybe. But we might be walking right into whatever spell he cast. This is bigger than anything we've ever seen him do. Even the Norvag Naj."
Lion-o heaved a sigh of relief. While the twins weren't wrong that Mumm ra's pyramid would likely have the answers they desired, it was far too risky an undertaking, especially if he was capable of this type of spell. His power was at its peak!
"But if that's what we have to do. Fine! I want answers. And that might be the only place we can find them!"
Panthro bolted forward and wrapped his strong arms around WilyKit, pouring every bit of strength into that hold. "No! Listen WilyKit. That'll just get you two captured too! By Jaga, think!"
Panthro's hold seemed to do…something. WilyKit stopped in her stance forward, almost as if she couldn't move. Panthro squeezed as tight as he dared. Anything to keep her as far from that undead mage as possible.
"Keep thinking!" Bengali encouraged. "There has to be another way!"
"don't think that's a good idea. You and I both know anytime we end up in the Pyramid, we need help."
"Yes!" Tygra once again tried to stroke the kitten's hair back. "Listen to your brother. I know you're upset but this won't fix it."
"I know but we have to do something! Anything!" The kitten let out a mild curse before returning to her twin.
Snarf shook his head. "Where'd you hear that, WilyKit? Certainly not from old Snarf."
Despite the situation, Lion-o laughed. "Snarf, does that really bother you?"
Lynx-o chuckled some himself. "I think if there were any situation were such language would be appropriate, my friend, it is this one."
With a shrug, Snarf stated, "I guess so."
Quiet followed as the twins resettled into thought.
WilyKat suddenly stood. "Wait. Maybe you're right, Kit. Maybe the answers are in the pyramid."
Panthro slapped his forehead. "Great Thundera, not you too! You'll just get yourselves—"
But WilyKat wasn't done. "Just not the Black Pyramid."
Realization flooded Kit's eyes and hope burned in the Thundercats' hearts.
"Of course." Cheetara said just as WilyKit declared:
"Mumm-Rana."
