-Chapter 58-
Day Out
One week later…
Echidnaopolis
In Lara's hut on Angel Island, the older Echidna was carefully removing the bandages from around Kat's head. She had a scar on her head, but was otherwise okay.
"Gotta love Master Emerald radiation therapy," Kat mused.
"Agreed," Lara nodded.
"Same," Knuckles agreed, walking in at that.
"Welcome back, son," Lara greeted. "What'd Relic want?"
"The Guardian Robots are just about ready," Knuckles informed them.
Kat slid her headband on, hopping off the bed. "Let's check it out."
-X-
Marble Garden
They headed to the Grand Conservatory, seeing Locke already there with Relic. He looked at the Guardian Robots, which were all standing at attention.
"I'm quite impressed," Locke mused. "I never thought I'd see these old things in working condition again."
"I did the best I could," Relic replied.
"You did great," Knuckles assured.
Relic smiled. "Thank you. Well, just one thing left to do."
She pressed a button on the one in front. Its eye slowly lit up, looking around before its eyes fell on Knuckles.
"Scanning and classifying data…" it said aloud. "Subject identified of Knuckles of the House of Edmund, current Guardian. Registration complete." It bowed. "Guardian Unit X-51, reporting for duty."
"Alright, X-51," Knuckles declared. "You and your brethren are tasked with protecting the Master Emerald, Angel Island, and all the beings who reside here."
"Understood," X-51 confirmed.
Kat smiled, clapping her hands together. "Alright, and not a moment too soon. Let's go see how Sonic and the others are in Knothole."
Knuckles turned to Locke, who just waved him on.
"Even if I tried, I couldn't keep you here," he assured. "The Guardian Robots have proved their mettle in the past. Besides, I do believe allowing you to come and go as you please was a condition of you staying."
Knuckles nodded, pulling out a Warp Ring and tossing it.
Knothole
In their private lab, Chris and Keith were working with Tekno on the Megatal, trying to find a weakness. They'd tried just about everything they could think of, but had yet to find a successful solution.
"Wow…" Chris mused. "You were extremely thorough."
"Eggman made sure of it," Tekno replied. "Fortunately, I made sure to snag my research notes before we left the Titanic Monarch warzone."
She placed the file on the table. Keith opened it up, whistling.
"This is gonna be harder than we thought," he noted.
"How about you boys take a break?" Sonic suggested, sticking his head into the lab. "We've got company."
"Yeah, we've been at this for a while," Chris admitted, standing up.
"Who's coming to visit?" Keith asked.
"Our favorite hotheads," Sonic answered.
Just then, a Warp Ring opened up, allowing Kat and Knuckles to leap through.
"Hey guys!" Kat called out.
"Miss us?" Knuckles asked.
"I did actually," Sonic quipped before socking him on the shoulder, "but my aim's gettin better!"
Knuckles snorted, then returned the punch. Sonic went flying, colliding with a tree and dropping to the ground hard. Kat snorted as she and the echidna shared a high five. Sonic pulled himself up, rubbing his head.
"Cute," he said flatly.
"Your head's looking better," Keith noted, glancing at Kat.
"Master Emerald is one hell of a doctor," Kat replied.
"So, if you're here, I take it Relic finally finished her work on the Guardian Robots?" Chris asked.
"Yep," Knuckles nodded. "And as per my agreement with my father, that means we can come and go as we please."
"Like I said, at least he's not a complete jackass," Sonic mused.
"As Lara told me, he's not so bad once you get to know him," Kat replied.
"Eh, makes sense," Sonic conceded. "She had to have seen something in him to want to marry him."
"Anyway," Chris cut in, "now that you're here, why don't we go have a day out?"
"Yeah," Sonic nodded. "The lab rats need some time out of the lab."
"So where should we go?" Kat asked. "I don't really know much about this area."
"Station Square," Keith offered. "We'll show you around."
Kat smiled. "Sounds like fun."
"I'm coming too," Knuckles insisted. "It'll be nice to see some of the Mobian surface without the world being at stake."
"Then it's settled," Sonic declared. "Let's go."
Station Square
It wasn't long before Sonic, Knuckles, and their human friends arrived in Station Square. Kat looked around, then let out a breath.
"Nowhere near as bad as Studiopolis," she sighed.
"Yeah, no flashing lights or movie effects," Keith agreed.
"And nowhere near as much noise," Kat added.
They went along, Chris and Keith showing them the sights. However, they soon noticed Kat and Knuckles were drawing more than a little bit of attention from the crowd. Eventually, Knuckles scowled, glaring at them.
"What?" he snapped. "Have you never seen a Mobian before?"
"It's not that," Sonic cut in. "I come by here all the time. I think it's more to do with your duds."
Both Knuckles and Kat looked down at their clothes.
"This is my good loincloth," Knuckles pointed out.
"Yeah," Kat added. "Nobody seemed to have a problem with my clothes when we were in Studiopolis."
"That was different," Sonic told her. "They probably thought you were an extra in the next big jungle movie or something."
"Here, in Station Square, you... kinda stand out in the crowd." Chris included.
"Okay, fair point," Kat conceded.
"Maybe some more... traditional clothes would be good for our ventures down here," Knuckles admitted.
Sonic smiled. "I know just the spot."
He led them along. As they went, Chris suddenly stopped cold as he saw something ahead.
"Hey, what's-?" Sonic cut himself off as he saw what made Chris stop.
Four kids, three girls and a boy, were approaching. The boy was Efrikan-Northamerian (1) with green eyes, one of the girls a green-eyed redhead, and the last two girls both blondes with blue eyes. Chris' eyes were fixated on one of the blondes, who was in a wheelchair.
"Hey, guys!" Keith greeted, waving.
"Hey, Keith," the redhead greeted. "Hey, Chris. Where have you guys been?"
"Yeah, you haven't been at school," the black boy noted.
"Just been a little busy," Chris replied.
"Another time encompassing science project?" the paraplegic asked.
Chris was already beet-red at the sight of the wheelchair girl, tugging on his collar.
"S-something like that," he admitted.
The other blonde girl noticed the new additions. "Who're your new friends?"
"Yeah, their costumes are cool," the redhead noted.
"Not a costume," Knuckles said flatly.
"Guys, these are Knuckles the Echidna and Kat Winters," Sonic cut in, before gesturing to the new arrivals in turn. "These are Chris and Keith's friends from school. Frances Williams," the red-head waved, "Danny Lillis," the black boy gave a two fingered salute, "Helen Birnbaum," the parapalegic smiled, "and Hope Kintobor."
"Nice to meet you," Kat greeted before noticing a rather nasty bruise on Hope's arm. "Hey, what happened to your arm?"
Frances sighed. "That creep Mark Carradine has been messing with Hope again. He stuffed her in her locker.
"Why would he do that?!" Kat demanded.
Danny scowled. "That jerk thinks that just because Hope is Dr. Robotnik's niece that-"
Sonic, Chris, and Keith were already making "cut it out" gestures, but it was too late.
"Niece…?" Kat let out, her hand going to her burn-scarred arm.
"Wait a sec…" Knuckles perked. "You said Robotnik's real name was Julian Kintobor, right?"
"Yeah," Sonic gave in. "An accident turned him into the monster we know and loathe today."
"The ROCC explosion," Hope recalled, her shoulders drooping a little.
"Dr. Kintobor was the nicest man you could ever hope to meet," Helen clarified. "The exact opposite of Robotnik in every possible way."
Kat's hand slowly released her arm.
"What's the ROCC?" Knuckles asked.
"Retro Orbital Chaos Compressor," Sonic clarified. "A gadget Dr. Kintobor and my uncle Chuck were working on with Chris and Keith's grandpa and a bunch of other people. It was designed to use the Chaos Emeralds to purge Mobius of all evil, but they could only ever find six. Without a full set of seven, it was unstable."
"Sonic was there that day," Chris added. "From what I heard, Dr. Kintobor tripped and slammed into the control panel. The machine exploded, and he took the full force of a negative Chaos energy blast."
"Uncle Julian died that day, and Dr. Robotnik took his place," Hope said sadly. "Now every jerk at school seems to think just because I happen to be related to that maniac means they have free reign to pick on me."
"And the bruise?" Keith demanded, already angry. "If Carradine did that to you, I'm gonna-"
"No," Hope cut him off. "I tried to bust the locker open from inside. That's how it happened."
Suddenly, Kat was hugging her.
"I'm sorry," she said softly. "You don't deserve that."
After a minute, Hope hugged her back before pulling away.
"Anyway, we were just on our way to Honey Clothing to pick these two up some new clothes," Sonic piped up. "Wanna come with?"
All of the kids cheer, Hope smirking a bit.
"Hey Chris," she began, "mind pushing Helen's chair for a bit?"
Chris tensed up before Keith slapped him on the back, leaning in.
"Dude, we single handedly defeated a small platoon of Eggman robots, jumped off a building onto a flying airship, took down one of Eggman's lieutenants, and saved the world from the Phantom Ruby. Compared to that, what's a little time spent talking to a girl?"
Chris thought that over, then took a deep breath. "Sure, not a problem,"
With that, he walked over and took up position behind Helen, turning her chair around. With only a mild blush, he began pushing her down the street, the rest of the group following. behind as Hope shared a high five with Keith.
-X-
They arrived at Honey Clothing. Sonic was just about to go in when they heard Honey squeeing and clapping.
"That's it, Deena!" the cat cheered. "Work it!"
"I think this is your best one yet, Honey," came the voice of Princess Undina. "I simply must have it for myself."
They went in to see Undina modeling one of Honey's latest outfit, a rather gaudy and elaborate ensemble. The fish princess was wearing a sleeveless yellow blouse over a small black top and black shorts, along with a matching pair of yellow sleeves, a yellow hairband with a ribbon on the left side, a deep pink ring on her right index finger and a cyan ring with a white jewel on her left middle finger, complete with what looked like big white earrings on her head fins, some tape tied around her ankles in the shape of matching ribbons, and a pair of deep pink single-strap sandals. Knuckles blinked before leaning over to Kat.
"If a girl walks down the street wearing that, you know she's not afraid of anything," he whispered.
Undina twirled in the outfit, laughing happily as she did. She then stopped when she saw Sonic, her smile growing wider.
"Sonic!" she cheered, running over and hugging him. "I didn't know you shopped at Honey's! Oh, who am I kidding, of course you do. You're a hedgehog of taste."
"Yeah, she makes all my clothes," Sonic confirmed, gently pushing her away. "Hello, Princess Undina. Been a while."
"No need for formalities," Undina assured. "Just call me Deena."
"Y'know, I'm not even surprised you know Deena," Chris admitted.
"We met during a rather unwilling sabbatical of mine," Undina explained.
"She was locked in the Egg Dungeon with Mina," Sonic added.
"Can you believe he came in covered in oil as a disguise?" Undina asked, chuckling. "I imagine the smell didn't come out for awhile."
"Let's just say it took quite a bit of soap and water before I was completely blue again." Sonic confessed.
"I guess it's a good thing I made your clothes so they're stain resistant," Honey noted, walking over. "Oil is such a difficult thing to remove from fabric."
"This cat makes all your clothes?" Knuckles asked.
"Out of heat-resistant and friction-proof material," Sonic nodded. "Any other clothes would burn up from my speed, and I'd be running around naked. So my Uncle Chuck made a deal with Honey and put aside a special Sonic Budget for whenever I need some new threads."
"Nifty," Kat admitted.
"Oh, my," Honey came over, taking Kat by the hand. "Traditional Echidna design, right down to the hand woven shoes and hand-carved jewelry. Absolutely stunning."
"You've done your homework, I see," Knuckles mused.
"Fashion is my bread and butter," Honey explained. "I know everything there is to know about it, past and present."
"As beautiful as their ensembles are, they do seem to stand out in a crowd," Undina admitted.
"Indeed," Honey agreed.
"That's actually part of the reason we're here today, Honey," Sonic confirmed.
"Like ya said, we stand out," Knuckles added. "We don't like being gawked at."
"I'm good for now, but Knuckles and Kat wanted more... native clothing," Sonic said. "Whatever they get, just put it on my tab."
"Say no more!" Honey declared. "Let's start with you, sweetie."
She pulled Kat off into the store.
"This may take a minute," Sonic noted.
-X-
While they waited, Chris and Keith caught up with their friends.
"You guys joined Sonic's Freedom Fighter group?" Danny asked. "No wonder you've been gone for a while."
"Yeah," Chris nodded. "We actually helped take down some of Eggman's forces."
"Chris did most of it though," Keith pointed out. "And nearly blew his hands off taking on a Hard-Boiled Heavy."
"Really?" Helen questioned.
"Our Nitro Glove invention worked like a charm," Chris explained. "I, uh… overclocked it."
"This idiot crossed the streams and doubled the energy output," Keith tacked on.
"Oh, Aurora…" Helen let out. "Are you okay?"
"Just some minor burns on my hand," Chris assured. "They took me to a doctor afterward."
"Our latest project is trying to help one of Sonic's teammates," Keith went on. "Eggman trapped him in a suit of Badnik armor made of Megatal."
"As in, the strongest metal alloy on the planet?" Frances questioned.
"Oh, yeah," Chris confirmed. "It's one hell of an undertaking."
"We've tried acid, welding torches, and every tool in our arsenal," Keith added. "Now, we need new tools. But we have found out what it's made of and why it's so hard. Refined Diamondius (2)."
"Dang…" Hope mused, "No wonder you can't crack it."
"Yeah," Chris nodded. "But we'll find a way. Everything has a breaking point."
"Let's just hope it breaks before you do," Danny noted.
They chuckled before Hope looked at where Kat went.
"That girl, Kat…" she began. "I saw how she reacted when she found out I was related to Eggman. He did something to her, didn't he? That arm…"
"Yeah…" Keith sighed. "Remember what we told you that one time? How Sonic toppled the Death Egg, but didn't know there were a bunch of other people on it?"
They got it at that.
"She's the sole survivor you mentioned," Helen realized. "The girl who lived…"
"Got it in one," Chris confirmed.
"I'm surprised she didn't attack me or blame me," Hope remarked.
"Nah, she blames Eggman and Eggman alone," Knuckles assured. "She did the blame game already and she hated it. If anything, she probably feels bad for you."
It was at that moment Honey exited the room, smiling.
"Presenting the new and improved Kat Winters!" she declared before gesturing dramatically as Kat exited the changing room. She was wearing a pair of dark jeans with a white tank top, a red jacket tied around her waist. She was still wearing her headband and all of her jewelry, as well as her woven shoes.
"Miss Winters here is a very active person who seems to prefer simplistic clothing," Honey explained. "Thus, I went with a classic tank-top jacket combo. The accessories help her to retain some of her adopted echidna heritage, as well as give what would have been a rather bland outfit some unique pizzazz."
"Very nice," Sonic noted. "It suits you."
"Thanks," Kat said with a smile. "I like it alot."
Honey handed her the other outfit, folded neatly and in a bag. "Now, I do believe it's the echidna's turn."
She held out a hand. Knuckles hesitated before taking it, and Honey immediately dragged him away. Kat sat down where he sat, occasionally tugging on her shirt.
"Man, it's been so long since a shirt's covered my midriff," she mused.
Hope timidly approached her at that.
"Um... Chris and Keith told us about what happened to you," she began. "About what my uncle- Robotnik did. I just want to say I'm sorry you went through all that."
Kat's face fell, a hand going to her arm. "It's not your fault. You lost someone to Robotnik too. Maybe even in a worse way."
Sonic sighed. "I still can't believe you're being bullied at school just for being related to Eggman."
"Nothing's really changed, Sonic," Hope told him. "Carrabine's just a jerkoff loser who picks on everybody."
"People like that make me sick," Kat spat. "I'm sorry you have to endure that, Hope."
Helen scoffed. "If I wasn't in this wheelchair, I'd kick his butt into next year."
"I'd do it, but the teachers won't let us bring another experiment to school after the Science Fair incident," Chris noted.
"Hey, that wasn't even our fault," Keith pointed out. "We told that judge it was a prototype."
"...Do I even wanna know?" Kat asked.
"Long story," both boys admitted.
"So Kat, you go to school?" Frances asked.
"Not really," Kat replied. "Knuckles homeschools me."
"He does?" Danny asked.
"Apparently," Chris confirmed. "Kat once told us he's a prodigy who could do college-level math at age three."
"Yep," Kat nodded. "However, Locke's recently taken up those duties. He's nowhere near as understanding or helpful as Knuckles."
Sonic rolled his eyes. "I guess it was too much to hope for that he'd mellow out completely after what happened last week."
"Nope," Kat agreed. "To his credit, he's not being a complete asshat, but he's still not exactly treating me like a member of the clan."
Hope thought for a moment before snapping her fingers.
"If he sucks at homeschooling so much, why not come to school with us?"
Kat blinked. "Wait... what?"
"Yeah!" Helen insisted. "You can enroll in school with us here. You'll make friends, have good teachers, and be able to get away from Locke."
"But... what about the Freedom Fighters?" Kat questioned.
"We'll talk with the Dean, see if we can get an arrangement like mine and Keith's," Chris suggested. "We get to come and go as we please, so long as we pass all our tests."
"I think that it'd be good for you, in all honesty," Sonic remarked.
"Good for me?" Kat asked.
Before the discussion could continue, Honey exited, followed by Knuckles. Unlike Kat, he had gone completely modern. He wore a cowboy style attire, consisting of a brown leather vest and a matching belt over a black T-shirt and matching pants. His hand wraps had been replaced with large, white, mitten-like gloves with sock-like cuffs with pockets for his knuckles spikes, and his woven shoes were replaced with red and yellow sneakers, each with green cuffs and a grey, sextuple-bolted plate on top. Lastly, he wore a silver-white circlet around his neck, which rested on his chest right where his white crescent birthmark was.
"Now this is an ensemble to be proud of," Honey declared. "I wanted something that was a bit tougher given the echidna's tendencies towards violence, and given the massive bruising on the knuckles, gloves were a must. The new shoes are also to prevent instepping, a must for close quarters fighters. As for the ensemble itself, a rough and tumble fighter deserves a rough and tumble outfit. This piece can withstand any and all punishment, and look good to boot."
"You really like to go all out with your designs, don't you?" Knuckles asked.
Honey grinned. "Fashionable and functional. That's my policy."
"Looking good, Knux," Kat noted. "All you're missing is a hat."
"Unfortunately, I'm lacking in the hat department," Honey admitted. "At least, men's hats that would go with this outfit."
"I've got one of those at home," Knuckles told them. "An heirloom my grandfather Hawking passed down to me."
"Oh yeah, Sir Hawking," Kat recalled.
"Thanks for the help, Honey," Sonic told her.
"Anytime," Honey said with a grin.
"You all be good!" Undina declared.
-X-
The group headed out, Kat turning back to Sonic.
"So, back to the topic of school," she said. "Why do you think it'll be good for me?"
"You'll get to socialize with other humans, get used to being around them again," Sonic explained. "And also have some time away from Lousy- I mean, Locke."
Knuckles snorted. "Nice one."
"Hmmm…" Kat pursed her lips in thought. "Y'know, I'll admit, I do kinda miss school, and I think I'll be able to do that test passing arrangement."
"So you'll come?" Helen asked.
Kat nodded. "Yeah, I think I will."
"That's great!" Hope cheered.
"But first, we need to show off our new duds." Kat insisted.
"Oh man," Sonic chuckled. "Locke is gonna blow a blood vessel."
Echidnaopolis
Thus, Knuckles and Kat returned to their home in Echidnaopolis. Lara simply complimented their outfits, while the blood drained from Locke's face, staring at them like they'd grown three heads and a tail.
"Yeah, I got a little wardrobe update so people don't gawk at me while I'm on the surface," Knuckles told him. "So what? I don't need traditional Echidna robes to do my Guardian duties."
"I'll probably still wear the traditional clothes," Kat added. "This is just for jaunts down for fun. Or for school."
After a minute, Locke softened and nodded. "Yes, you're right. A Guardian's wardrobe doesn't matter."
"It's just missing one small thing," Lara said.
With that, she went into the house, coming back out with a brown cowboy hat with a blue line circling the area just above the rim, decorated with yellow circles with red five-pointed stars in the center.
"That's part of the reason I came back, actually," Knuckles admitted, placing the hat on his head.
"It suits you," Lara mused.
" Oh, Locke, I'm going to be attending school in Station Square from now on." Kat informed him. "So no more lessons with you."
Locke just shrugged.
"If that's what you want," he said flippantly.
"Cool," Kat nodded before awkwardly walking off.
"Hey Dad," Knuckles piped up, "thanks for… not going ballistic over this."
"I'd be lying if I said I was perfectly fine with it," Locke admitted. "But I left you in charge seven years ago so you could become self-sufficient, make your own decisions. You've done exactly that."
He gave a small nod, then headed off himself. Knuckles watched him go as Lara put an arm around her son.
"He's trying," she assured. "You know how he was raised. How seriously he takes the traditions and Guardian stuff. Just give him time."
Knuckles nodded. "I will, Mom."
Station Square
A few days later, Kat enrolled in Station Square Middle School. On her first day, she was being shown around by Chris and Keith.
"I can't believe that one teacher didn't believe I was from Chun-nan," Kat muttered. "I mean, come on."
"Did you have to tell him off in Chun-ese?" Keith asked.
Kat shrugged. "Not like he knew what I said."
"I doubt I wanna know," Chris confessed.
They were just sitting down to lunch with Helen and the others. Hope was approaching them with her own tray when suddenly a hand shot out from a nearby table, tipping it and spilling the milk on it all over her. A husky boy around their age with black hair practically hurt himself laughing while every other kid just looked pissed. Frances shook her head in disgust.
"Carradine's at it again," she muttered.
Hope looked over him, her expression somewhere between exhausted and bored. "Okay, you got me."
Mark sneered. "So whatcha gonna do about it? Roboticize me?"
He pushed Hope, leaving a handprint in the mess on her clothes. It was at that moment that Mark looked at his hand, seeing it stained with the food. In disgust, he wiped it off on his own shirt, getting a laugh out of the other students.
"Now look what you made me do, Kintobor!" Mark snapped, clenching his fist.
Kat went to stand up, but Chris and Keith stopped her. Hope didn't react at all, just shrugging and rolling her eyes.
"Seriously Mark? Is that the best you've got?"
"Excuse me?!"
"It's ridiculous! Can you at least try to be original for a change? You've been doing the same old bully routine since the first grade, Mark. It's tired. Spilling my drink? Seriously?" She shook her head. "I can't believe anyone was ever afraid of you."
She gestured to the other students, who were watching with annoyed expressions, all of them fixed on Mark.
"Look around, Carradine. We've all grown up, while you're still the same old pathetic loser who has to torment others just to feel good about himself you've always been. You're just sad."
Mark was left in shock as Hope walked away without another word, while everyone in the cafeteria started applauding her. She got herself a new tray, sitting down at the table.
"Nice one, Hope," Helen told her.
"It's about time someone stood up to him," Danny declared.
"Honestly, I can't wait for the day Carradine gets hit by a freight train and is put out of our misery," Frances announced.
"Not gonna lie," Hope admitted, "I think about doing stuff like that to him a lot. But that's what Dr. Robotnik would do, not Uncle Julian."
"You're a good person Hope," Kat told her. "and nothing like Robotnik."
Unbeknownst to the kids, who were smiling and laughing, Sonic was watching outside the window from a nearby tree branch. He smiled and nodded in approval before departing.
Author's Note:
(1): The Mobian equivalent of African-Americans. Efrika is the Mobian equivalent of Africa.
(2): Taken from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog; the hardest mineral on Mobius. A cage made from it was able to block Sonic's Spin Dash.
Helen, Frances, and Danny are all from Sonic X, and Hope is from Archie. The first three's last names are taken from their voice actors in the show.
Mark Carradine is based on a bunch of asshole bullies who used to torment me back in school; bullying is something I don't stand for.
Also, to answer some of your reviews, Void Reader, even in Sonic the Comic, Grimer was as evil as he looked, but genuinely pleasant and polite. He was disturbed by some of Robotnik's bad boss tendencies, and even he thought some of his plans, like destroying Mobius outright, went too far. As for Bark, my version of him can talk, and even in Archie, it's hinted in their Sonic Encyclopedia that Bark isn't actually mute; he chooses not to talk because Bean talks so much that it's damn near impossible for him to actually get a word in.
