Sequel to Michael J. Sullivan's short story "The Jester". Royce treats Hadrian's wounds after leaving the caves, and is unable to hide how afraid he was when Hadrian didn't immediately resurface after their tremendous fall into the water. Back at Medford, Hadrian talks to Gwen and she suggests that they should show Royce how much they both care about him.

Knowing that Royce is ruthless and dangerous, but also knowing that he would never actually hurt him, somehow does it for Hadrian. Royce is reluctant to indulge Hadrian's new realization, because his friend obviously doesn't know what he is asking for. Hadrian can be very persuasive, though.

Royce needs to feel in control after a job that didn't go according to plan and Hadrian is happy to oblige.

A heist story inspired by the plot of the film, How to Steal a Million (1966). Royce and Hadrian have been living in Medford for a couple month (takes place shortly after the events in The Rose and Thorn.) From Hadrian's POV. I have a more explicit version on Archive of Our Own.

I merely had to follow my attractive, if dim-witted, target, stand back and make sure he arrived safely. But no, things couldn't have stayed simple.

Hadrian decides that his kid needs to know how to survive in the wilderness, so he plans out a camping trip. Mercy thinks it a great idea and Royce decides that his fairy princess should get a survival training trip too. Make note that Hadrian's and Royce's idea of what a survival training trip should consist of differ greatly.
