A band of vermin leaves their horde to find a better life in the south of Mossflower. They eventually make it to Redwall Abbey where they attempt to make peace with the woodlanders to survive the winter. Both woodlanders and vermin despise working with each other but with the desperation of winter and a common enemy can they find a way to live in the shadow of their enemy?

Upon returning to Redwall Abbey, a mouse is called upon by Martin the Warrior to defeat a magician with the ability to manipulate dreams and visions.

"Harlapple, the newest warlord in town, has come to Mossflower, his heart set on conquering Redwall Abbey. The Redwallwers don't stand a chance! Wai- why are you laughing? Yeah, he's a mouse, what difference does it make?" Lackfoot, a stoat with only one foot, crossed his arms over his chest and huffed. "Whatever happened to not judging books by their covers, eh?"
