Chapter 2
The next day she couldn't believe her eyes as she stared down the street of Diagon Alley. "Harry, can you believe this?" Violet asked as she looked around.
They grinned at each other, both visibly excited as the weight of the money in their pockets made them acutely aware that they could buy more things now than they ever had been able to in their lives.
Hagrid walked them towards a robes store before he looked down at the two children, still pale as he rubbed his stomach with his knuckles. "How about you both go get your robes fitted while I grab a drink to calm my stomach?"
The two children glanced at each other before Harry spoke. "Alright."
Hagrid ushered them into the store before leaving.
"I'll be right with you." An older woman said to Violet before looking to Harry to say. "You boy, please come stand on this pedestal. Hogwarts?" Harry moved to where she had pointed, nodding to the woman as Violet moved to stand against the wall nearby Harry. Violet's eyes traveled beyond her brother to a blond-haired boy a bit taller than her brother. His face a bit sharp and tight as he stared into the mirror a scowl drawing his eyebrows together as he watched the woman pin the new robes with shaky hands.
The boy seemed to only notice Harry as he spoke rather pompously about school and wizarding things she didn't understand but still drank in the unknown information. Harrys tight polite smile told her that he too seemed reminded of their cousin. With a roll of her eyes, she found herself losing interest in their conversation as she watched the boy more than listened to his words. From the way the boy spoke and held himself it was clear that he thought he was something special. Violet was already thinking that she didn't much care for him, and he hadn't even said a word to her yet.
Quickly Madam Malkin finished with Harry's robes, taking them off him before directing him off the pedestal.
"You next girl." She called Violet forward as Hagrid knocked on the window with ice cream. Violet looked from Hagrid to her brother then to the boy as she pulled away from the wall and stood on the pedestal.
She allowed Madam Malkin to put robes on her as she heard the boy sneer "Who is that?" but his voice sounded a bit off as if he was distracted by something as he asked.
"That's Hagrid." She heard Harry reply telling the boy who the giant holding ice cream was. She heard the excitement in her brother's voice and smiled to herself as she still looked down at her feet where the woman was settling down on a stool and pulling a small red cushion full of pins towards her.
"Do you want me to wait for you?" Harry asked her glancing at the blond boy hesitantly, clearly not wanting to leave her alone.
She smiled at her brother in the mirror but shook her head. "No, your ice cream will melt. I'll catch up to you later. One of you two can eat mine. I bet I'll be here for a while." She looked to the woman again who nodded in confirmation pulling the first pin out of the cushion. Harry nodded and with one last look at the boy he left the store.
She looked at herself in the mirror and frowned at the nice black fabric that looked nicer than anything she had worn before. Her long red hair somehow more vibrant against the black fabric. She wondered idly about Hagrid's words last night.
'You look just like your mother Violet, it's almost eerie.' Violet couldn't help wondering just how similar she was to her mother. Her gaze shifted to the boy's reflection in her mirror and was surprised to find him staring at her. He looked away when she tilted her head slightly in confusion at the look in his eyes.
Violet looked away from the mirror at the boy, her curiosity peaked again.
"I'm Draco. Who are you?" he asked after a moment of silence as they looked at one another. He sounded hesitant and gone was his haughty tone.
"Violet." She gave him a suspicious look.
"You're all set." The woman who was working on his robes said as she pulled them off. She took them to the back to sew them leaving Draco standing on the pedestal.
He stood there for a moment as if debating staying or going but after a moment, he stepped down taking a step towards her. "What flavor of ice cream do you like?" He blurted out to her.
"What?" She looked at him confused by the random and rather mundane question.
He simply shrugged. "You are almost done. Ice cream sounds good. I'll get you one. What flavor do you want? Unless you want me to guess, and I promise… they have too many flavors, so I'll come back with something very strange."
She considered him for a moment. He seemed friendly as he smiled at her, and she wondered if she had misjudged him. "Strawberry." She said with a small grin.
"Good choice." He agreed before leaving. Violet turned back to the mirror and found herself watching the window behind her absentmindedly as Madam Malkin assured her that she was almost finished. Just as she announced that she was finished two bowls of Ice cream appeared in the windows reflection held by the smiling boy. Violet chuckled to herself as Madam Malkin helped to pick out some other uniform items for her and Harry before cashing her out for the order.
A few moments later, with three bags of clothes, she left the store not noticing the older woman's long and somewhat amused stare as the door closed behind her. The shopkeeper had insisted she pass the clothes onto Draco not wanting the ice cream inside and aware of their earlier exchange. Draco was leaning against the wall of the shop. He held the bowl of strawberry ice cream with chocolate shavings out to her but noticing the bags he directed them to a nearby bench.
She set the bags down, taking the offered ice cream before sitting down beside him.
"Thank you." She smiled hesitantly to him still unsure what to think of him now as he was being polite, and the pompous air seemed to be gone.
"Sure." They sat in silence for a moment. For her part she wasn't quite sure how to make conversation when she didn't know a thing about this world, she was now a part of. School, sports… even politics…she felt like she had missed out on so much. He saved her from having to find something to talk about, however, by asking her. "So… do you know what house you will be in?"
"To be honest I don't know anything about magic." she said bluntly, deliberately looking away from him. He hadn't seemed to like people who were not raised in the magical world so she figured honesty would cut things short if she didn't fit into his world view.
Draco looked down at his ice cream as if struggling to find words to say but before he could respond she heard her name being called. She saw Harry a bit off in the distance looking at her with a slight frown and Hagrid looking at Draco with an even larger frown. She looked back to Draco to see him looking at her brother and Hagrid. For a moment she saw a hint of what she thought might be curiosity on his face but when he turned to her, he simply gave her a small smile which she returned. Then he said, "I guess I'll see you at school."
"Thank you for the ice cream." She offered him another smile before grabbing her two bags and running off to her waiting party.
When she reached her brother, he blurted "What were you doing with him?"
Violet simply shrugged "Eating ice cream." She held up her small bit of ice cream still left. "Here are your robes." She handed Harry a bag before turning back to look for Draco. He was nowhere in sight, so she turned back to Harry and Hagrid "Where to next!" she asked a little more enthusiastic than necessary.
She wondered as they walked what he had been about to say but found herself relieved that she hadn't heard his words. He was the first person her age to be kind to her in this new world… She didn't want that ruined so soon.
Violet and Harry spent the last month living as ghosts to the Dursleys who seemed to decide to pretend they didn't exist or in Dudley's case get afraid of the twins and turn tail running away at the very sight of them.
They spent most of their time in their small bedroom. An old and battered bunk bed that had come from a used furniture store years ago sat in the far corner. Even then it had been a bit broken but now the third rung of the ladder was broken, the railing of the top bunk missing and a few of the supports for the bottom mattress broken. However, the broken bed wasn't the only broken thing in the room. Dudley's used and abandoned toys were piled in the corner and a broken dresser with drawers that liked to stick now held the two owl cages.
This room was now their sanctuary; they spent the month sitting in those ratty beds reading their schoolbooks and imagining the world they would be living in soon.
"I bet they have so much food to eat." Harry announced one afternoon after wondering about their schedules and meals.
"Tables piled high with food." Violet agreed as her stomach growled with hunger. Harry glanced at her his expression mirroring her own feelings. They were not about to brave this house more than needed and dinner wasn't for a few hours.
"We will be able to eat until we pass out." He joked.
"Shepards Pie." Violet suggested
"Steak" Harry practically drooled at the thought.
"Potatoes of all sorts"
"Sausages or chicken." Harry suggested. "Oh! Bacon!" He added
"Frog egg soup?"
Harry gaped at her. "What?"
She simply shrugged. "Who knows what wizards might eat." She said it so seriously that Harry began laughing so hard that he began crying. Violet joined in laughing with him until they both couldn't breathe properly.
Once their laughter died down Violet smiled at her brother. "We will be happy… together in a new world. Everything will be okay as long as were together."
Violet wondered if her eyes betrayed just how afraid she truly was because Harry hugged her close and said "Together. We will be okay." Violet allowed herself to hug him back, melting into the comfort he offered. He didn't pull away for a long moment and she considered that maybe he was just as nervous for this new start as she was.
When she pulled away, she laid down on the bed looking up at the slats of the upper bunk. She asked, "What house do you want to be in?" in an effort to change the subject to a lighter topic.
"Oh, as long as I am not in Slytherin I suppose. Can you imagine? If that boy from the shop was one… they seem like they would be an unpleasant sort. Plus, Hagrid said most of the bad wizards were once Slytherins."
Violet thought of Draco. She couldn't quite say he had been that bad. A bit full of himself sure but she thought he had been kind. Still, she couldn't ignore that the house created many bad wizards. Perhaps it was best to avoid those people. "Yeah, I certainly wouldn't want to live with those kids if they're all going to be horrid."
"I think I want to be in Gryffindor." Harry announced jumping off the bed. He stood tall, his fists on his sides standing like a superhero pose. "Brave, Courageous and loyal." He looked to Voilet who was laughing at her brothers' theatrics. "Sounds about right." He laughed as he spoke before pretending to sword fight an invisible opponent.
Violet laughed as he pretended to deliver the winning blow then bowed to her as she clapped for his victory. "Yes, dear brother." She laughed "You would be a good Gryffindor."
He grinned. "Both of us would!" He pulled her up to her feet and stood opposite her holding his fake sword at the ready. She followed suit pretending to hold a sword and together they engaged in a fight of the ages complete with his dramatic narration of every blow and miss, often leaving her to die at his hands.
That night Violet lay in the bottom bunk looking up at the slats of the bed her brother peacefully snored from above. Sleep out of reach as she worried about tomorrow's first day in the wizarding world. How would they get to the train? Would they fit in? How far behind would they be to the others? Would she be a Gryffindor?
It was the last one she dwelled on the most. Harry had been so sure, but she had not been. She didn't see where she fit into this strange and new world though she desperately wanted to. She didn't know if she was brave… or clever… or kind… or ambitious. If she were honest, she didn't feel like any of those the houses suited her. Harry knew what he wanted, and she had no clue.
So, with a virtually sleepless night she rolled out of bed the next morning feeling distinctly unprepared and restless while her brother seemed to wake up well rested and excited. She couldn't help but feel a slight bit jealous of him and his ease as they loaded their trunks into the Dursleys car and headed out for Kings Cross.
(Authors Note)
Hello, as this is a re-telling of sorts with an OC, I just want to say… if something isn't written about explicitly you can assume that the plot follows the books. I am not here to bore you all with the same story with a few lines of different text. The books are Harry's view. This story is Violet's so they kind of work together.
PS it is my goal to update this at least 2x a month if not every week (Likely Sundays). Life got crazy but I am back. Already working on chapter 3 :)
