Most mornings Bakugo always tried to avoid any sort of human interaction or eye contact unless the situation called for it and it was absolutely necessary. But today he had no such luck considering he was stuck dealing with Shitty hair, Raccoon eyes and Round-face, all who didn't know the definition of staying silent.
"I like this." Mina stretched her arms out walking a few feet behind he and Kirishima." So…is this kinda like a double patrol-date?"
"No!"
"No!"
"Fuck no!"
"Ok just making sure." She sheepishly shrugged as she grinned at Uraraka walking next to her.
"Would you hurry your asses up?!" Bakugo shouted over his shoulder when he realized the two were still walking at a leisurely pace.
"But it's too morning for me…" Uraraka blearily rubbed her eyes, yawning in the middle of her sentence as she continued dragging her feet and felt her shoulders tiredly sag.
"Tough shit. Maybe next time get to bed at a decent hour."
"Maybe next time you could let me sleep like a normal person." She grumbled back, which made Mina and Kirishima try and suppress a small laugh while Bakugo's eye began to twitch with annoyance.
"So, this whole working for a living thing goes on for how long?" Mina asked.
"Forever or until you die." Bakugo answered a little too quickly which made Mina frown.
"We're heroes Mina, remember?" Uraraka responded with a slight giggle.
"Oh is that what this is?" Mina playfully glanced down at her hero suit.
Dragging his hand down his face when he heard both girls laughing he only stopped when they arrived at the address Todoroki had given them. "Ok this is the place. Check the other side of the building. See if anyone has heard anything or seen anything unusual about the tenant that lives there." He pointed upwards towards one of the top apartment windows. "Round-face and I will go this way."
"On it!"
"Be careful!" Mina and Kirishima quickly disappeared down the street leaving only her and Bakugo behind.
"Alright Round-face you're up." He said pointing upwards. "Use your quirk and let me know what you see but don't go in. If you come across any trouble, I'll be here keeping watch."
"Got it!" Fisting her hands she quickly floated her way up little by little until she could reach the windowsill. Peeking her head up she cautiously tried to make out what was inside before glancing back down to see him carefully scanning their surroundings. Squinting her eyes she tried to peer inside but couldn't see very well past the dust covering the window.
"Uraraka?" he whispered after a good five minutes had gone by. He saw her take one last look around before she carefully maneuvered herself back down.
"Couldn't see much. But from the way it looked it doesn't seem like anyone's been living there for some time." She explained, finding it odd that they were told to check this place out when clearly this apartment had been abandoned some time ago. And by the looks of it Bakugo was having the same thought just as Kirishima and Mina came jogging up to them.
"The people we came across said that whoever lived there checked out a few months ago. Left without a word."
"Did they mentioned who lived there or what they looked like?" Bakugo asked while Kirishima shook his head.
"No man. They said the guy pretty much kept to himself."
"Well, this was a bust." Mina raised her hands up wondering why the heck they had to come here.
"We should let Todoroki know that we didn't find anything." Uraraka was the first to move away from the building. The last thing they needed was to draw more attention to their snooping around than they already had. But the result still puzzled her.
"So, I guess we'll catch you guys after our shift?" Mina turned to look at them from over her shoulder as they began walking in the opposite direction.
"God I hope not." Bakugo mumbled before briskly marching away to begin their normal patrol.
After saying her goodbyes, Uraraka quickly jogged over to catch up to her partner who kept unusually quiet for the next few hours of their shift and only spoke to her when he needed to. And it wasn't as if she herself didn't have any questions of her own about this strange mini recon mission, but she could just ask Hawks about it later. After working with the Pro hero for so long she had a sneaking suspicion that he was somehow involved in this.
"Oi Round-face?"
"Hmm?" Questioningly tilting her head, she could see him still facing forward. She couldn't help but wonder why he seemed to be contemplating his words very carefully around her today. As if he wasn't quite sure he wanted to even involve himself in any conversation with her. Surely this couldn't have anything to do with what happened with Kenzo the other day since he did claim that he didn't care. So what was it?
Finally thinking it was best to get this damn thing off his chest before it drove him mad, he took a deep breath before finally asking the question that's been nagging him. "The other day at the interview…"
"Yeah…?"
'Oh why the hell does she have to look so damn clueless right now?!' That thought alone made that simple question seem so stupid right now. It would've been so much easier if she just flat out told him without him needing to ask. And he shouldn't need to ask. So, what if she said that shit? It shouldn't bother him this much, so why was it?
"Bakugo?"
"Why the fuck did you have to go and say that?" As soon as those words left his big mouth, he really wished he hadn't said anything after all.
The way his voice seemed so conflicted made her stop walking to see him frustratingly run a hand through his ash thick hair as he stopped walking too. Smiling when she saw his spikes had a little bounce to it whenever he did that. "Um say what exactly?"
"That shit you said!" he knew the little patient he still held quickly began to crumble when she sounded like she had no clue what he was talking about. But then again…did he?
"Um…was I not supposed to?" She innocently blinked back, not entirely sure why he was getting so flustered over something silly she said in a simple interview. She thought it went well after all so why didn't he?
"No! I mean yes! I mean goddamn it!" Snapping his eyes closed after placing his hands on his head, he slowly turned to see her still cluelessly staring back. "Why did you have to say that?" he tried again this time a little calmer.
"Bakugo…" she lightly giggled as she moved her eyes to look behind him. Usually that sound would always help ease him somewhat, but right now it did quite the opposite. Almost mocking him in a way. Especially after hearing the next words tumbling out of her mouth. "…I said something about everyone."
The soft sound of her voice was a direct punch in the face that suddenly woke him up from whatever answer he was hoping to hear. He wasn't even sure what he wanted to hear but it sure as hell wasn't that. 'Of course she did.'
He had heard what she had said about Deku and anyone else that was mentioned. So, he wasn't sure what possessed him to even think otherwise. "Course you did."
Silently chuckling to himself he missed the way her lips rose into a sad smile as she studied him. Refusing to acknowledge how pathetic he must've sounded to her right about now.
"Ba-"
"Dynamight!"
Any tension in the air was quickly broken when they heard incoming footsteps approaching from behind him which made them both turn in time to see the same kids from before excitingly running towards them.
"Dynamight!"
"And Uravity!"
"Not these brats again." He rolled his eyes, not minding their perfect timing at all right now. The last thing he wanted was to make an uncomfortable situation even more awkward all because of his stupid sudden need to ask her something he never should have.
"Hey!" Uraraka warmly smiled at the kids as they stopped directly in front of them, excitingly clutching their fists in the air.
"We saw you guys on TV!" The youngest boy shouted, unable to contain his enthusiasm.
"Did you now?" She grinned, squinting her eyes shut as she playfully looked over her shoulder at the blond who slowly moved closer to them.
"Of course they did." Bakugo huffed as he looked down at them. "By the way rocks for brains said he'd come by tomorrow and bring you his long overdue cavity inducing snacks."
"Candy!" The kids yelled in unison, which made a rare smile cross his face which he quickly masked into an annoyed scowl.
'Such a softy.' She thought as she turned to the small girl now tugging her hand.
"Uravity?" she shyly whispered placing her hand over her mouth in hopes of being quiet, regardless of the fact that Bakugo was standing right next to Uraraka.
"Yes?"
"Can…can you make Dynamight float again?" The little girl was unable to keep the small giggle to herself when she remembered looking over one of the magazines from when Uravity first came back to Japan. She made it her mission after coming face to face with the hero last time to look over any recent news regarding her now favorite hero and wanted to see for herself.
"The hell? I'm not a damn yo-yo" Bakugo scowled down at the girl before raising his eyes to Uraraka who was doing a pretty bad job at hiding her own amusement when she realized he had overheard their conversation. "Do it and I won't hesitate to kill you." He threatened.
"Is that something a hero should say Dynamight?" One of the boys teasingly asked, already aware of Dynamights temper. By this point Uraraka was pretty sure all of Japan was aware of that.
"No, but there are those that I can make an exception for." He wickedly grinned back at the boy, but it quickly vanished when he felt a light pat on his back and his feet lifted off the ground. "Oi what the hell?! Round-face!" Ignoring the continued cheering and giggles from the kids now a few feet below him, Bakugo's anger flared as he tried to somehow get back on the ground. "ROUND-FACE PUT ME DOWN!"
Giggling along with the kids next to her, she couldn't help but find it quite entertaining to see the Great Explosion Murder God Dynamight trying to grasp onto anything knowing full well he couldn't run the risk of using his own quirk, otherwise it would shoot him straight into the concrete.
When she meet his dangerous glare she decided it was time to deactivate her quirk, feeling that she had already caused him enough grief for one day and she didn't want to run the risk of one of those thirsty reporters getting another picture of her using her quirk on him just because they were having a little fun.
"PUT ME DOWN IDIOT OR I SWEAR I'LL-" When he felt his weight returned, he expertly landed on his feet with an angry THUD as he slowly approached her.
"Or you'll what?" she playfully raised her chin before gesturing to the kids. "They enjoyed it. So, no harm done right?"
Inhaling deeply, he tried not to let the way she stared up at him or the way the kids continued to ask her to do it again get to him. But that didn't change the fact that what she did was fucked up and he still felt the nauseating after effect of it too.
"Again! Again!" They pleaded but stopped when their parents shouted for them to get back home.
"Maybe next time." Uraraka ruffled the little boy's hair.
"Next time?!"
Uraraka waved back at them as they ran down the street only to freeze when she felt Bakugo's firm grip clutch around her arm as he dragged her away from prying eyes, only releasing her when he was sure they wouldn't be seen.
She flinched as her back hit the wall, not in pain but because she wasn't expecting it. She watched as he walked right up to her. His expression darkening. "What the hell was that?"
"It was just a little fun Bakugo. What's wrong with that?" She frowned.
"You know I don't like it when you do that shit. Or have you forgotten that too?" he harshly spat back as he sternly pointed his finger in her face. He knew he was letting his anger and frustration from before control his talking, but after all this time…her attitude towards him just continued to grate on his last nerve. He never saw her give so much shit to any of the others, so why would he be the exception.
Smacking his hand away she couldn't help but feel irritated and confused by his sudden change of demeanor until it hit her. "Wait, is this still about that interview?"
"You think I care about that?" he really did, but she didn't need to know that.
"No." She carefully said. "But if it's not that…then what is it?" She had always known that from the moment she met the explosive blond that he was never as easy to get along with as some of the others in their class. But based off what she had heard from Todoroki back when the both of them had to do their remedial classes after the two didn't pass the exams…and given the fact that he and Kirishima went out of their way to help these kids whenever they could. She knew that this couldn't be it.
So logically it left only that.
She could see he seemed to be struggling with something when he didn't immediately respond the way he normally would. With what exactly, she didn't know, but nonetheless wanted to make sure he knew that she wouldn't back down in finding out. That despite him taking out whatever issues he was working through, she knew it wasn't directed at her.
At least she hoped she wasn't the cause of that.
"Bakugo-" Flinching back the moment she saw him slam his palm against the wall next to her face, she could only watch with wide startled eyes.
"Shut up." he forced the words out between gritted teeth as he glanced down at the ground, his hair shrouding his face.
"Just tell me what I did."
"Nothing…you didn't do anything Round-face." He lowly said, still refusing to meet her eyes which only made her frown deepen.
The urge to touch his face so that he would meet her eyes the way she normally would was too strong, but she had to remind herself that things weren't the same as before. But that didn't mean she couldn't lend a friend a helping hand when they needed it.
"Then what is it?"
The gentle sound of her voice made him squeeze his eyes shut to try and drown her out. Of course she'd want to try and help. This was Ochaco fuckin Uraraka. She always wanted to help. But right now, he wasn't even sure if he wanted her help. Nor could she. He didn't need anything but focus on his work. Once that could be done which he was sure would be no problem, then everything would go right back to the way they were before she decided to move back to Japan.
"Nothing." He firmly repeated, clenching his jaw. That was it. That's all he had to do. Just one last day.
What he wasn't expecting was to feel the soft pads on her fingers as they lightly brushed against his cheeks in a way that made him freeze. Despite the softness of her hands, the sudden familiar jolt of electricity that happened before had him scrambling to try and find out why that was. And instead of feeling foreign, almost strange like…it felt comforting, warm and welcoming which made everything ten times worse.
Fuck Todoroki and fuck Ponytail for putting him in this stupid predicament and placing them as partners. He now wished to count down the minutes until he was no longer forced to work with her. No longer forced to think about mindless things that made no sense. That made him ache.
"Bakugo…" When she managed to finally raise his face high enough to see him carefully studying her, she was startled to see barely noticeably tears gathering in his shaking eyes before he blinked them away.
Quickly retracting her hands from his face, scolding herself for allowing herself a moment of weakness just to be able to touch him again just once. To remember what it felt like to be so close to the before you gave your heart to.
He seemed to be just as surprised by her when she saw a shy blush creeping up his cheeks which he instantly replaced with his usual scowl. "You're lying." She quietly said understanding that he wasn't going to tell her no matter how much she asked.
"Tch." He watched the way she tilted her head in a playful manner knowing that a liar wasn't one of his traits. At least he could give her credit that she remembered at least that much about him. A slight smirk flickered along the side of his mouth as he narrowed his eyes at her. "Takes a bullshitter to know a bullshitter Round-face."
That seemed to do the trick when she nervously removed her eyes from him, only confirming what he already knew. So without a second though he leaned his face closer, which quickly caught her off guard as her eyes widened in shock.
When he saw her lips parting -no doubt wanting to know what he was doing, he couldn't stop his eyes from drifting to her lips as the words from the interview repeated in his head. "Told your ass not to curse. Or did you forget?" he smirked finding the way she was reacting to him entertaining.
Snapping her mouth shut she was torn between keeping her distance by shoving him back or wanting to only pull him closer to finally close the gap between them.
"You know with a mouth like yours…" he didn't know what in the world possessed him to lightly run his gloved thumb along her bottom lip, barely grazing it. Wondering what they would feel like. "I guess we can't call you Japan's little sweetheart anymore, can we?"
Holy crap! Why was she suddenly overcome with this sudden need to plug that thumb into her mouth? She thought she had done a pretty decent job at hiding all her emotions towards him, but right now she could feel her cheeks firing up at the thought. 'What's happening right now?!' Did he have any idea how much this was affecting her? Or was he just teasing her because of what she had said?
Clicking his tongue, he was just about to say something else but stopped dead when they could hear a voice come through their earpiece which seemed to snap him back to the present.
"Dynamight? Uravity? What's your location?" Yaoyorozu could be heard on the other end.
"What's it to you?" Bakugo responded back moving away to keep a safe distance between them, but never removing his eyes from his partner as she let out a sigh of relief.
"Got an armed robbery in progress with various casualties being reported."
"Just point me in the right direction and I'll blast their asses to hell like I always do."
"Dynamight…" He knew. He just knew Ponytail was on the other end looking displeased which he couldn't care two shits about. As long as he did his job and did it well then everything would be fine.
"We're on it just send us the location." Uraraka breathlessly responded but kept her frown in place even after Yaoyorozu gave them the information.
"What are you waiting for? Let's go." He swiftly said as he began stomping away.
"M-me?" She gaped at the blond as he looked both left then right to pinpoint which direction they needed to go. Like he hadn't just cornered her and in the process reawakened all of those exciting memories she kept hidden.
"Where the hell's…?" he trailed off when he found what he was looking for but stopped when he realized she wasn't moving from her previous spot. "Round-face? What the hell are you waiting for? An invitation?"
He wasn't stupid in not knowing that she was just as spooked and confused as he was but that didn't change the fact that if they didn't get going now, then he would lose out on a potential fight which he desperately needed right now.
He wasn't sure what the hell she was mumbling as she awkwardly made her way towards him but sure as hell wasn't about to ask anything else today.
"Come on, we're at least fifteen minutes out. Five if we blast our way there."
"Say what now?" She repeatedly blinked and took a quick step back when he reached his hand out towards her.
She was staring at it like he had some damn cooties or something which just added insult to well…insult because that was all he could think about right now.
"Round-face!"
"Ok ok! No need to get so worked up…" she mumbled the last part which only made him pinch the bridge of his nose.
"I'm not." He forced out.
"Good."
"Great."
Meeting his determined expression with one of her own she barely managed to keep from stumbling when he roughly pulled her towards him. "EEP!"
"Relax, I've got you." Glancing up he flexed his free hand. "I know you can float your way there and maneuver with your rocket boots but trust me. It'll be faster this way."
"Um ok…" She would not look at him. Nope not at all, no matter how seriously hot he looked right now when his lips rose into that familiar battled ready smirk.
"Just…grip me as hard as you need to."
She does just as instructed, not caring what it's doing to her right now.
"Oi not that hard idiot!"
"Sorry!" she bashfully said, missing the way his brows raised in amusement. Pulling her to him he bended his knees in preparation before shooting off towards the sky in the direction that Yaoyorozu told them.
By the time they arrived they could already see some other heroes helping people at the supermarket, spotting the black gateway truck already a few miles away.
"Shit." Bakugo hissed, readjusting his hold on her as he tried to catch up to the moving truck. "Hang on!"
"Shot out the tires!" Uraraka shouted passed the loud whisp of wind hitting her face.
"Don't tell me what to do Cheeks!" Raising his hand, he aimed at the tires right before they began to screech against the concrete. They could see two villains who managed to jump out while the driver continued to try and make it pass them.
"Round-face!"
"I've got them! You go after him!" she nodded already wiggling herself free.
Pressing his lips together he briefly watched her shooting in their direction while he followed the truck. "WHERE THE HELL DO YOU'RE GOING?!" he roared shooting off another explosion as the truck began to tilt to the side.
Landing on the roof of the truck he punched through the driver's side window and pulled the man out before jumping off. "It's your lucky day asshole!" The truck began to roll continuously through the street before coming to a crashing stop.
"Please…" The man whimpered, helplessly clutching onto Bakugo's hands as he held him up by the collar of his shirt a few feet off the ground.
"Consider yourself fuckin lucky because that shit could've been you." He growled at the man who already had tears streaming down his cheeks.
"Please I'm just the gateway driver!"
"Doesn't make it better!" Bakugo angrily growled as he harshly tossed the man to the ground when he saw the police already running up to cuff him.
"Thanks Dynamight, we've got it from here."
Grunting he shot himself into the air, able to spot his partner fending off one of the men while the other already lay motionless on the ground.
It wasn't until he saw the man who was shooting some kind of metal spikes towards her that he realized why he was still standing-or at least trying to since his legs seemed to be immobile at the minute right before the man fell to his knees. Which was around the same time that he could see Uraraka panting as she concentrated on increasing the man's weight.
When she was sure he was down she dropped her quirk and began leaning on her knees to control her breathing.
"Round-face?"
Too drained to respond she only managed a faint nod to let him know she was alight. 'Maybe I'm more tired than I thought.' She tried to blink away her fatigue, but a moment was all she had before Bakugo saw the man raise his arm once more before falling unconscious.
What he didn't know was that the metal spikes the man shot out only focused on their intent target which happened to be Uraraka at the moment. "Watch out!" he shouted as it blew right passed him and towards her.
Using his explosions he only succeeded in knocking off two of the three metal spikes as she frantically began dodging them.
Using his cluster technique he quickly propelled himself to catch up with her while continuing to try and stop the last of the spikes as it zoomed through the air. When he managed to throw it off course after unleashing another bigger explosion, the force of the blast threw them in the direction of the nearest building.
She seemed to notice this as well at the same time he pulled her towards him, wrapping his arms around her to shield her from the impact a second before they crashed into one of the windows. Wincing as glass shards scraped against his skin as they hit and rolled across the floor.
Grunting he tried opening his eyes while he slowly tried to get up, hearing the clatter of small pieces of glass that had landed on his back hit the ground when he did. Coughing he finally looked down to see her painfully groan as she raised her hand to her head which was still covered by his arm. "Oi you still with me?" he panted, carefully watching her to see if she was really ok.
"Yeah." She croaked just as disoriented as he was. When she finally managed to open her eyes, she was caught staring at the same crimson eyes that managed to always steal her breath. While she was grateful that he tried to save her from most of the impact, all her brain seemed to register at the moment was how snug her body was wrapped around him as he hovered over her only mere centimeters from her heated face.
His jaw visibly dropped before snapping shut as his eyes continued to widen in disbelief, unable to close them as the feeling coursing through his veins left him momentarily stunned.
Her chest rose and fell with every intake of breath wondering what was going through his mind right now. Could he still feel it too? Did she dare hope for something that could never be again? No matter how much she wanted it to…even if at the moment it seemed impossible to resist, she had to keep fighting it.
"Bakugo?"
Stupidly blinking back, it took him a while to respond. He felt his throat dry up when he realized that if he only angled his face just right…
Involuntarily his gaze flicked down to her lips for the second time that day, while his own parted slightly. "Hah?"
"You can get off me now." She gave a faint giggle but the way her smile seemed strained told him that she had caught it.
He hesitated to reply, only staring at her with alarmed eyes. As if her face alone could offer him some kind of explanation to a question he had no idea of himself. He should get up. He should want to get up. So why the hell wasn't he?
Closing his eyes he quickly jumped to his feet while she briskly dusted herself off while getting to her feet. The sounds of sirens alerting them that the police had just arrived.
It seemed that she was much quicker at getting over her shock compared to him which only made him scowl at her damn aloofness. Like he didn't see the same shock and fear in her own eyes.
"We should get going." She turned to him with one of her bright smiles before walking over to the broken window.
Opening his mouth she didn't give him a chance to respond before she floated herself down. How the fuck was she doing that?! One minute he was having trouble completing a damn sentence and the next she pretended like nothing happened. Who the fuck does she think she is?!
Jumping down he landed next to her as she continued talking to two police officers that had asked her about what had occurred -which he wanted to know too but for different reason but instead kept his mouth shut. His presence didn't seem to bother her, but he did catch the bare stiffness of her shoulder before she continued talking. She didn't seem as affected as him, which only annoyed the shit out of him.
"Thank you both for your help." One of the officers said before walking away with the other.
When he caught her turning to him, he quickly looked away finding the chance to check on the men involved in the robbery as the police were escorting them away. This would just have to be another property damage added to his growing piles of papers he had to take care of when he got back.
"Thanks again for before." She sheepishly rubbed her arm but didn't get any responds from the blond as he continued to watch the police officers.
Shifting her attention to where he was looking, she swallowed nervously hoping and praying he couldn't see right through her mask. As she began to turn to leave that's when he finally spoke up after the disaster that just occurred upstairs.
"Oi." He carefully watched her as she stopped mid-step to look over her shoulder. Studying her for any sort of reaction. Anything at all. "Don't be late. We've still gotta hand in our reports for today."
"I won't." She gave a half smile before moving over to the growing crowd. Her smile instantly falling, replaced with a small tear threatening to betray her true emotions.
