Matty smiled at his dad. "Sure dad. I love the movie room. Those black leather reclining chairs are so comfortable. I remember that was the first time I had watched a soccer match. It was awesome. I remember being mesmerized by it. Irene had turned on the closed captioning too because she knew I couldn't hear. She always thinks of everything.
We each were sitting in separate chairs, but I went over and sat on your lap in yours. We watched for a while, and you fell asleep dad. But then you woke up suddenly about an hour later. I could tell you had a bad dream. I just hugged you.
Irene came back a couple of hours later with a bag. She had gotten me a Game Boy and I swear she got me every single game the store had. She is as bad as you dad when it comes to buying toys. Probably because neither one of you had much of a childhood. I still think it is funny that both mom and Phillip banned you two from ever shopping alone together again.
Irene handed me the Game Boy. I remember you putting the batteries in it for me. It felt familiar. When I put in Super Mario Land and started playing it, I remembered how to beat the game. It was so fun. I was so happy just being there with you, watching soccer and playing video games at the same time.
We spent the next week just getting adjusted to our new life. I remember when you told me that my new name was Matty. I liked having a different name. Especially because I did not remember being Alex and I wasn't sure I actually was me. Having a different name somehow made me feel less guilty about possibly stealing another boy's life. I asked you to start just calling me that all the time.
You were doing a little better, dad. You were sleeping better. I think the pills that Doctor Williams gave you helped. We went to his office a couple of days later and he tested my hearing. I had profound hearing loss in my left ear. He tested a couple of hearing aids out on me, but they did not really work because my hearing loss in my left ear was too severe.
After a couple of more weeks, we were starting to get good at the tapping. Grandfather also hired us a tutor to teach us all sign language.
When the guest house was finally ready. I remember how awesome it was. It was way more modern than the estate. Grandfather got us all new things. We got the newest big screen television, all kinds of DVDs, and a Super Nintendo game system with all the games. My room had all the toys too. It was crazy. I went from having nothing to having everything. I rarely even really played with any of my toys. I just liked to read and play video games. Dad, you liked playing with my regular toys more than I did. I am glad that Phillip and Irene keep popping kids out so you will still get to play with toys, dad. Especially now that Leann and I are starting to get a little older.
Even though I had such a cool bedroom in England. I barely slept in my own room in the guest house. I always just slept in dad's room with him.
About two months after we got to England, it was the morning. Dad was teaching me Judo in the courtyard. That is when Sven came by. He was taking his smoke break. I had met him, but I never really talked to him. I just knew he was the head of my grandfather's security. He seemed fascinated by dad teaching me judo. You want to take the next part of the story, dad. Since it involves talking."
His dad smiled at him, "Sure, kid. I wanted to teach Matty how to defend himself. So, I started teaching him Judo. Every morning after breakfast we would go outside for a little bit. That morning like he said Sven was taking a smoke break. He started watching us. I had not really talked to him much.
I mean Phillip is not wrong about Sven looking like the Russian in Rocky IV.
Sven came over and smiled at us. "The boy is most impressive in the way he moves. I can show you some moves as well if you are up for it. It is not Judo. I teach Kung Fu and Shorinji Kempo. If you are interested, I have Kung Fu classes for children at night and on the weekend at the Chelsea Sports Center. I also give private lessons."
He handed me a business card. I smiled at him, "Thanks Sven. I think maybe I will take you up on that. Maybe just the private lessons for now. Irene can arrange for payment for you. I think I might be interested in learning as well."
Sven smiled at us. "Of course. I can teach both of you at once. I will speak with Irene. We can figure out a schedule that works best."
Sven is a really great guy. Matty & I learned a lot from him. He does not look it, but he is a much gentler teacher than Doctor Pain.
After we practiced martial arts. Grandfather wanted to see us in the study. We walked over to the study.
My grandfather looked up from some paperwork and smiled at us, "Hello Lee and Matthew. I heard Sven is going to be teaching you lads some martial arts. He was in the Swedish special forces until he retired from the military and moved to London because he met his wife who was from London. He really enjoys teaching martial arts to children. If there was more money in it, I think he would leave me and do that full time."
I smiled at my grandfather, "Yes, sir. He seems like an interesting man from the little time I have spent with him. You wanted to talk to us about something?"
His grandfather nodded, "Yes, I have some news. I made a few phone calls. You said that you would be interested in teaching. Well, there is a job opening for a history professor at Chelsea College."
I looked at him, "That is the school right next to where we enrolled Matty starting next month. That would be wonderful if it works out. Thank you, sir."
My grandfather smiled at me, "I figured you would be happy about that being that you have such a hard time not being near the boy. Now you still have to interview with the dean, but I believe that I have a made a large enough donation to that school that they will not turn you down. Irene is working on your resume now. You have an interview on Friday morning. I know how you feel about anyone but you watching the boy. You take him with you everywhere. But you are going to have to learn to be away from him when he goes to school. Leave him here. He will be fine. It is only for a couple of hours."
My grandfather was not wrong. We had been there for two months, and I took Matty everywhere with me. The only times we were separated where when one of us used the bathroom or showered. I needed him near me especially in the beginning. He kept me grounded and I needed to know where he was at all times. I would not have been able to handle it if anything were to happen to him again. I am sorry for that, kid. I know that was not healthy for you for me to be so overprotective of you. "
Matty looked at his dad, "C'mon dad, I had been in the warehouse. I was so happy. Being with you all the time was awesome to me. You made me feel safe, dad. Like nobody could hurt me when I was with you. You still make me feel safe. Plus, in the beginning you were the only person I could really communicate with. I think the only thing was it made it a little harder for me to adjust when I first came back home. I got a little jealous about having to share you with everybody. But I got a mom, a grandma, brothers, and a sister out of the deal so it was worth being a little jealous."
His dad ruffled his hair, "Just so you know. It was hard for me to share you with everyone too. Especially your mom because I can't even come close to competing in the parenting department with her."
His dad walked over and put his arm around his mom. She grabbed his hand and kissed it, "Oh, you do a pretty good job. I was married to Joe for almost ten years, remember? I have never had any of the four kids question that you love them. That is all it takes to be a good parent. You just do your best and love your children. In fact when you first moved, I had both Philip and Jamie asking me why their own real father did not love them like you did. You are a wonderful father. Ok?"
Matty spoke, "You really are the best father, Dad. Both of you are the best. I know how lucky I am to have such awesome parents. Rachel and Jeff keep telling me how cool my parents are. I mean even though it is a little embarrassing when you both keep making out on Rachel and my dates. When I get out of the hospital and feel better. The next time Rachel and I go out. Do you think maybe just one of you can chaperone? Or that you could just get me a random agent for my security?"
His mom smiled, "Your dad and I will discuss it. Now how about you two get back to the story. I want to hear about school and how you both met Tony."
Notes:
Oh wait, did I just give you a sneak peak at the sequel part because I remembered that this will eventually turn back into the sequel part of the story. Predicting Matty just needs to bring his parents on his dates even if they just embarrass him and make out with each other the whole time instead of a random agent with no real character name. LOL
Next chapter: Lee leaves Matty alone for the first time so he can go to his job interview. Matty and his great grandfather bond.
