His dad smiled, "I will tell the next part of the story. My job interview had gone really well. Dean Pete Thompson. He was eager to have me. Irene had given me a really good resume. Even though I had never really taught before. But I had gone undercover as a teacher a couple of times for the agency. At least I do like history, and I could be close to Matty.
I got the job right away. Pete thought my crazy story was interesting. I had to tell him the whole sad car crash story and why I had changed my name back to Winthrope because I had been teaching under the name Tremblay in Canada. The sad made up story about my wife Melissa who died in a car crash and that my son had lost his hearing in the car crash.
I could not believe that anyone would buy that crazy story, but Pete hired me on the spot. I also think the very large donation that Grandfather had given to the school helped with any holes that were in my story.
I went back to the estate. I figured Irene and Matty would still be in her office, but I got a little scared when her office was empty. Then I thought that maybe she took him to the guest house to play video games since she liked doing that with Matty. I walked over to the guest house, but it was also empty. Nobody was there. I was starting to get nervous.
The last place I figured I would check before I went to Sven to find out what was going on was the movie room. As I walked to the movie room, I could hear my grandfather cursing. I was hoping he was not cursing at Matty. I started walking to the room faster. I opened the door and I saw my grandfather was yelling at the screen and Matty was laughing at him. They both looked like they were having a really good time even though grandfather kept cursing and yelling at the television.
My grandfather turned his attention away from the game as I walked in, "Oh good, your home. How did it go?"
I smiled at him, "It went well. I got the job. Where did Irene go?"
My grandfather nodded, "There was an urgent matter I needed her to attend to. She will be back later this evening. I figured since the Man U and Chelsea match was on anyway. I would watch it with the young lad. He is still in one piece, boyo. There was no need to worry as much as you did."
I walked over to Matty and picked him up "Thank you for watching him, sir."
Then I sat down in the chair with Matty on my lap and watched the rest of the game with them. Man U ended up winning. That was the first time I had watched a soccer match with grandfather. It actually was really fun. I had never seen my grandfather so animated before. I had grown up on Air Force bases and even I learned some new curse words. It was actually pretty great seeing that side of him. I am so thankful that Matty & I got the chance to get to know him better before he died.
About a month later I started teaching and Matty started going to school. It was a little hard at first for us to be separate. Well, honestly it was harder for me. I had to start before Matty's semester started and I would call and check on him in between my classes. I think I got on Irene's last nerve calling to check on Matty so much.
It was easier for me when Matty went to school. Whenever I had a break, I could just walk over and watch him in his classes. There were never any problems at the schools. Everyone at both of our schools was very nice. I really liked teaching history. I think maybe I would like to eventually go back to doing that in a couple of years when Phillip gets a little more experience under his belt and is finally ready to take over the section chief job.
Anyway, teaching was going really well. Matty and I were settling in to our new routine. It was about a month into the semester. I had finished my classes for the day. I was packing up and was going to go over and get Matty, when one of my students came into my classroom. He was a very British looking young man, very thin, glasses, crooked teeth, and an easy smile.
He was smiling at me when he came into the room,"Hello Professor. My name is Tony Montez. I am in your morning American History class. Can I talk to you for a minute?"
I nodded,"Sure, I do have to go pick up my son, though. Do you want to walk and talk with me? He just goes to the school across the parking lot."
He nodded, "Yeah mate, I mean professor. The deaf school? Is your son deaf? How old is he?"
I nodded,"Yes, he is. He just turned six."
He smiled at me, "I don't mind walking and speaking with you. I would love to meet your son."
I put some papers in my briefcase, and we started walking. "So do you want to talk about the next assignment or something? From what I remember I gave you an A on your last assignment."
Tony nodded no, "No professor, your father is Lord Jonathon Hamilton, correct? You are his estranged son?"
I nodded, "Yeah, you have heard of my father? I did not really want that to get out."
Tony smiled, "Well it is out. I heard your father donated a large amount of money to the college. Everyone is talking about you especially the females. They are calling you the dishy professor. I know that you are rich, a widower and currently single. I am not interested if that is what you are thinking. I just am looking for a job. I was hoping that maybe I could interview for your grandfather. Maybe be a groundskeeper or work in the kitchen or something? I'll do anything, really."
There was something about the kid I just liked. He reminded me of Phillip and Jamie a little bit. Especially with the craziness that was coming out of his mouth about me being a dishy professor."
Matty started laughing, "Oh my gosh. I forgot they used to call you that. I have to tell Phillip."
His dad shot him a dirty look but was smiling a little, "Do not tell Phillip about that nickname."
His mom smiled mischievously at Matty, "Don't worry. I'll tell him."
His dad ran his hand through his hair, "Do you two want to know the rest or keep making fun of me?
Matty was waiting on a bench outside the school for me. Matty ran over to me as soon as he saw me and I picked him up.
Tony smiled at Matty and then looked at me."That's your son? Oh wow, he is a cute little nipper. Seriously mate, the girls are going to go even more crazy for you when they see this little ray of sunshine."
Then Tony started signing to Matty, "Hi Sunshine, my name is Tony."
Matty signed back, "Nice to meet you. I'm Matty."
I looked at Tony in surprise, "You can sign?"
Tony smiled back at me, "Yeah mate, I mean Professor. I can sign. My ex-girlfriend was deaf."
I smiled at him, "I don't care what you call me, kid. Look if your available sometime this week. You can come to dinner. You can meet my father. Just a heads up he is not exactly the friendliest man. He does not really like anyone. You don't really need to impress him though. It's my stepmother who would be hiring you."
Tony smiled, "I'm available now. I mean, if it isn't too much bother?"
I nodded,"It should be alright. I don't think my stepmother will mind. There is also always plenty of food. We will just need to see her and talk to her first. See if my father is in a good mood. It does not matter though. If he isn't. We can just eat dinner in the guest house. You want to follow us in your car?"
Tony looked at me, "I don't have a car, Professor. I usually just take the bus and tube to go home. Can I just ride with you in the James Bond car? Is it from the actual movie?"
We walked over to my Aston Martin and got in, "No, this one that I am driving was not used in any of the actual movies. So, no fancy gadgets, oil slicks, ejector seats or machine guns."
Tony smiled, "Shame. It's still brilliant, though. This is probably the poshest motor, I've ever been in."
We drove to the estate. I parked in the garage.I gave him a quick tour of all of the classic cars. Tony loved the favorite was a 1961 blue Jaguar E-Type convertible. We ended up giving Tony that car a few years later. He is such a great kid and has done so much for our family over the years.
Notes:
From Google "In British slang, "dishy" is an informal adjective that means someone is very attractive or good-looking."
Pretty sure nobody is going to disagree with that nickname for Lee.
Next chapter: How Tony becomes Lee's personal assistant.
