Chapter 1
Rukia and her fraternal twin sister, Hisana, had always felt a little different from the other kids at school. Their pale skin and icy blue eyes often drew curious stares, but they had learned to ignore them. Raised by their loving aunt Shirayuki in the bustling human world, they had grown up with a sense of normalcy, despite the occasional odd occurrence that hinted at something more. On the morning of their sixteenth birthday, the twins sat down for breakfast in their cozy kitchen. The table was set with a spread that only Shirayuki knew their kind would appreciate: frosty berries that sparkled like jewels, snowflake-shaped pastries dusted with powdered sugar, and a chilled, creamy drink that emitted a faint, icy mist.
Hisana, with her long, wavy hair and bright, outgoing personality, eagerly reached for a pastry. "I love these! Auntie, you always make the best birthday breakfasts," she exclaimed, her eyes twinkling with excitement.
Rukia, with her short, raven-black hair and more reserved demeanor, quietly sipped her drink. She glanced at her sister, a small smile playing on her lips. "They are good," she agreed softly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Their aunt Shirayuki, a tall woman with silver hair and a graceful demeanor, entered the room with a serious expression on her face. The usual warmth in her eyes was replaced with a glint of determination.
"Happy birthday, my dear girls," Shirayuki began, her voice steady but filled with an underlying tension. "Today is the day you learn about your true heritage."
Rukia and Hisana exchanged puzzled glances. They had always known there was something special about their family, but their aunt had never been this direct before.
Shirayuki took a deep breath and began to explain. "You are not human. You are Ice Women, mixed with Fae blood. Your parents were powerful beings who fought in the war against dark magic. They died protecting our world and many others when you were just five years old." The twins listened in stunned silence as their aunt continued. "Now that you are sixteen, it is time for you to embrace your heritage. You will attend Karakura College, a place where you will learn about your powers and the history of our kind." She paused, letting the information sink in before continuing. "Karakura College is hidden deep within the forest, protected by a magical shield that prevents humans from entering. Only those with magical blood can pass through. It is a sanctuary where you will be safe and can learn without fear of discovery." Shirayuki smiled gently. "At Karakura College, you will meet others like you and discover the true extent of your abilities. It is a place of learning and growth, where you will be guided by experienced mentors. You will learn to harness your powers and understand the rich history of our kind."
Hisana, her eyes sparkling with excitement, took everything in with a newfound enthusiasm. "This is amazing! I can't wait to go!" she exclaimed, practically bouncing in her seat.
Rukia, on the other hand, felt a bit nervous about the revelation, but it made sense. She thought about the many times strange things would happen when Hisana got mad or how she never felt cold when she went out in the snow with just shorts and a shirt on. Rukia wanted to ask questions—why tell them now? Why couldn't they grow up surrounded by others like them? Why had their aunt waited so long?
Their aunt smiled and told the girls to pack quickly. "We need to leave soon. I don't want us to be traveling through the forest after dark."
Rukia put her questions on hold and rushed with her sister to pack. They shared a room, something they had started to hate when they turned fourteen. Hisana was giddy the whole time.
"I knew we were different from others, I just knew it! And Auntie explaining everything, it just all makes sense."
Rukia gave a small smile as she packed. "Sis, aren't you a little freaked out? I mean, why now? Why would Auntie tell us now? And this school—we're only sixteen and it's a college. Everything is just happening so fast."
Hisana sighed. "Calm down. We got this. As long as we're together, we can get through anything. Just you and me."
Rukia visibly calmed at her sister's words. They hurriedly packed their belongings, stuffing clothes, books, and personal items into their bags. The room was a whirlwind of activity as they tried to fit everything they thought they might need into their suitcases. Hisana hummed a cheerful tune while Rukia meticulously folded her clothes, trying to keep her mind off her growing anxiety.
Their aunt knocked on the door, signaling it was time to go. The girls packed the last of their bags and met their aunt at the door. She smiled proudly and walked the girls to her car. She drove to the park in the middle of Tokyo, parked, and beckoned for the girls to follow. They followed behind their aunt with a mix of fear, nervousness, and excitement. The sun was beginning to set, casting long shadows across the park.
As they entered the forest, the path became more rugged and uneven. The girls struggled to carry their heavy bags, stumbling over roots and rocks. Hisana, despite her enthusiasm, found herself panting and sweating. "Auntie, how much further?" she asked, trying to keep her spirits up.
"Not much longer, dear. Just keep going," Shirayuki replied, her pace steady and determined.
Rukia, feeling the strain in her arms and back, tried to focus on the goal ahead. She could hear the rustling of leaves and the distant calls of forest creatures, adding to the surreal atmosphere. The forest seemed to close in around them, the trees growing denser and the light dimming.
They walked for a solid ten minutes before their aunt stopped them. She looked around and beckoned for the girls to hurry. Their aunt ran deeper into the forest and then suddenly disappeared. The girls panicked and picked up the pace, amazed to see another world as they walked through what they now knew was a portal.
Through the portal, the twins found themselves standing at the edge of a breathtaking landscape. Karakura College stood majestically in the distance, its spires reaching towards the sky, shimmering with an ethereal glow. The campus was surrounded by lush, enchanted forests, with trees that seemed to whisper secrets and flowers that glowed softly in the twilight. A crystal-clear river wound its way through the grounds, reflecting the colors of the setting sun.
As they approached the grand entrance, they were greeted by a student who introduced herself as Mei, a cheerful girl with bright green eyes and a welcoming smile. "Welcome to Karakura College! I'm here to help you get settled in," she said, leading them to the registration desk.
The headmaster, a tall, dignified man with a kind face and piercing blue eyes, stepped forward. "Welcome, Rukia and Hisana. I am Headmaster Yamamoto. We are honored to have you here," he said warmly. Beside him stood several teachers, each with their own unique presence and aura of wisdom.
Shirayuki exchanged greetings with the headmaster and the teachers, who all seemed genuinely pleased to see her. "It's been too long, Shirayuki," Headmaster Yamamoto said with a smile.
As the registration process continued, Mei handed the twins their dorm assignments. "Oh, it seems there's been a mistake," she said, frowning slightly. "Rukia and Hisana, you've been assigned to different dorms, but don't worry, they are close to each other."
Hisana's face fell for a moment, but she quickly recovered. "It's okay, Rukia. We'll still see each other all the time," she said, trying to reassure her sister.
Rukia nodded, feeling a mix of relief and apprehension. "Yeah, we'll be fine," she said, more to convince herself than anyone else.
The headmaster and teachers apologized for the mix-up and assured the girls that they would do everything to make their transition smooth. "You'll find that Karakura College is a place where you can truly be yourselves and grow into your full potential," Headmaster Yamamoto said.
With their aunt's encouragement and the warm welcome from the staff, Rukia and Hisana felt a sense of hope and excitement for the journey ahead. All too soon, Shirayuki hugged the girls tightly, wishing them luck and reminding them she was just a phone call away. She emphasized the importance of sticking together. Rukia and Hisana both didn't want to let their aunt go; they now realized that everything was indeed moving fast. They watched as their aunt waved and left, looking back once more to see Mei talking to the girls and explaining things to them.
Mei escorted the twins to their dorms. "You'll each have two to three roommates, but don't worry, the apartments are quite spacious," she explained. It was new to Rukia and Hisana to have an apartment as a dorm room. Hisana was assigned to apartment eight, while Rukia was assigned to apartment seven.
Rukia felt a bit scared to be alone with new people, but she knew she had to be brave and strong. Hisana hugged Rukia and wished her luck, telling her she was just a phone call and a literal apartment away. Rukia watched as her sister walked away and sighed heavily as she walked into her own apartment. She was amazed at how spacious the apartment was. It had four bedrooms, a spacious kitchen, and a living room with a TV setup. The apartment had a warm, welcoming atmosphere, with soft lighting that created a cozy ambiance. The scent of fresh pine and a hint of lavender lingered in the air, adding to the comforting feel of the space.
Rukia walked to the unclaimed rooms and instinctively chose the one at the very end. The walls were painted her favorite color, purple, which gave the room a serene and calming vibe. She walked her bags to the full-size bed, which was adorned with soft, fluffy pillows and a quilt that looked handmade. The bedspread had intricate patterns that reminded her of snowflakes, adding a touch of elegance to the room. She admired the desk on the side, which was positioned by the window offering a perfect view of the enchanted forest outside. The desk was made of polished wood, smooth to the touch, and had a few drawers for storage. The icy blue dresser for her clothes added a touch of elegance, its surface cool and smooth under her fingers. She felt as if this room was meant for her. Rukia decided to get settled in and decorated her room to her liking. She jumped when she heard someone else enter the apartment. Unsure whether to hide or close the door, she took a deep breath and walked out to see three girls.
The first girl had black spiky hair and a confident stance. She wore a martial arts uniform, hinting at her athletic background. "Hello, I am Rukia Sode no," Rukia introduced herself.
The spiky black-haired girl grinned. "Tatsuki Arisawa, nice to meet you." Tatsuki's strong build and determined eyes suggested she was someone who didn't back down from a challenge.
The second girl, with orangish blonde hair and a cheerful demeanor, stepped forward. She wore a colorful dress that matched her vibrant personality. "I'm Orihime Inoue, pleased to meet you," she said with a bright smile. Orihime's warm, expressive eyes and friendly nature made her instantly likable.
The last girl, with dark purple hair tied in a ponytail, smirked. She wore a sleek, dark outfit that hinted at her mysterious nature. "Senna. Can't wait to be rooming with you," she said, her eyes twinkling with mischief. Senna's confident posture and enigmatic aura made her stand out.
Rukia felt a wave of relief wash over her. Despite her initial nerves, she sensed that these girls would become good friends. She smiled, feeling a bit more at ease in her new home.
The three girls all went to claim their rooms and decorate them to their liking. Rukia decided to look around and noticed class schedules on their living room coffee table. The table was made of dark wood, its surface smooth and cool to the touch. She grabbed the schedules and went to her roommates' rooms, handing them their schedules. They all came out and observed their schedules, matching them to see if they had any classes together.
"Oh cool, Rukia, Senna, and I have Professor Thorne for Combat and Defense," Tatsuki stated, her eyes lighting up with excitement.
Senna grinned, her dark purple ponytail swaying. "Orihime, you and I have Professor Nyx for Dark Arts and Mysticism. Hell yeah."
Orihime clapped her hands together, her orangish blonde hair bouncing. "Oh yay, Rukia, you and I have Professor Seraphina for Healing and Restoration."
Rukia smiled, feeling even happier about her roommates. She looked at her schedule in more detail and noticed there was a male Guardian assigned.
"Umm, what's this?" she asked, pointing to the unfamiliar name.
The girls all looked, and Tatsuki groaned in anger. "It's a rule here. Us females have to have a male Guardian for if we go out in the forest or do training simulations. Stuff like that. It's so stupid. I don't need an idiot guy following me around and pissing me off."
Senna nodded in agreement. "I agree, but they want us girls to be safe. As if we need a man to protect us."
Orihime, sensing the tension, decided to explain further. "The Guardian system is meant to ensure our safety. Each female student is assigned a male Guardian, a fellow student who will accompany us during activities that require venturing into the forest or participating in training simulations. The Guardians are chosen based on their skills and compatibility with us, ensuring they can provide support and protection if needed. It's not about us being weak; it's about having an extra layer of security."
Rukia nodded, understanding a bit more but still feeling slightly annoyed by the implication. Orihime quickly changed the subject to lighten the mood. "So girls, the cafeteria opens tomorrow at five in the morning, and classes start at eight. Are we having breakfast together?"
Rukia smiled. "I'm down for breakfast together."
Senna and Tatsuki nodded in unison. The girls all agreed to wake up at seven to get cleaned and dressed and head to the cafeteria. Once they finished comparing schedules, they all went to their rooms to get ready for tomorrow. Rukia was nervous, scared, and excited all at the same time. She lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling, thinking about the day's events. The room was quiet, and she could hear the faint sounds of her roommates settling in. Despite her nerves, she felt a sense of belonging and anticipation for the adventures that awaited her at Karakura College. Rukia's room was cozy and inviting, with walls painted in her favorite shade of purple. The full-size bed was adorned with soft, fluffy pillows and a quilt that looked handmade. The desk by the window offered a perfect view of the enchanted forest outside, and the icy blue dresser added a touch of elegance to the room. She took a deep breath, feeling a mix of emotions as she prepared for her first day at the college.
