Hey! It has been a very long time since I have uploaded anything but my recent rewatch of Rizzoli and Isles has transported me back to my teen years and I have been plagued by ideas. So here I am years later uploading stories again! This is just one of the ideas that came to me and I couldn't help but write it. I hope you enjoy it
Maura Isles sat at her desk as she filled out her report from the latest case. The office was silent apart from the tapping of the computer keys as she typed. It had been a quiet day for her with no visits from the officers and detectives from upstairs. Maura was used to the silence and lack of company so she was startled when she heard a knock on her office door and it opened.
"Hey, sorry to bother you." Jane Rizzoli half leant into the office as she held onto the door frame with one hand. "You're a doctor, right?"
"Yes." Maura frowned at the question. She didn't know Jane that well. They'd been working together for a while but Maura tended to keep herself to herself so she didn't know much about the detective apart from the few things she had overheard others say.
"You can treat live people as well as the dead?"
"I can." Maura nodded, confused, and stood from her desk. "But you're probably better off going to the hospital." There was a reason she worked with dead people rather than the living.
Jane waved her hand and let go of the door frame. "The hospital would take too long. I don't have the time. Can you help?"
Maura hesitated before she walked around her desk. "What's the problem?" Jane reached to her side and pulled a young girl into the doorway before she pushed her into Maura's office. "Oh my god," Maura gasped as she noticed the blood coming from the young girl's nose. "What happened?"
"I think it's broken. Can you set it?" Jane asked as she placed a hand on the girl's shoulder.
"I don't have any anaesthetic here. It'll really hurt." Maura was not comfortable treating an adult, let alone a child.
"I don't mind," the girl piped up, her voice muffled from the tissue she was now holding in front of her nose.
"No, no, I possibly can't." Maura shook her head.
"Please, I really don't want to sit in the ER for hours today." Jane let out a sigh and her head tilted slightly to the side.
"I have a good pain threshold." The girl looked at Maura and dropped her hand that was holding the tissue to her nose. Maura's face softened slightly at the sight of the nose.
"She's a minor, I'd need parental consent," Maura finally relented.
"Great. I give consent." Jane clapped her hands. "Do not tell your Nonna about this." Jane pointed to the young girl. "She's already going to flip her lid knowing you've been suspended for two weeks for fighting."
Maura looked between Jane and the girl and suddenly realised just how much alike they looked. The unruly curls, the dark eyes, it was Jane and mini Jane. "I didn't know you had a daughter."
"She doesn't, she found me on the streets." The girl grinned between the two women, causing an eye roll and groan from her mother.
"Who inherited my smart mouth and chance of getting into fights." Jane gestured with her hand to her daughter's bloody nose.
"You were in a fight?" Maura asked as she grabbed what she needed to set the girl's nose.
"Yeah. I got fed up with Carter picking on the younger kids who don't have many friends. I told him to leave this girl alone today and he told me to make him so I punched him."
Maura looked up at Jane in shock and was surprised to see a mixture of annoyance but also pride at her daughter. "Well…"
"She's been suspended for two weeks so now I have to find someone to watch her and collect her school work while she's not in. Don't think you're off the hook that easily, Luna." Jane warned her daughter but her voice was still full of affection. Maura motioned for them to move to the couch.
"This will hurt," Maura warned and noticed how Luna took a deep breath and Jane grabbed hold of the girl's hand. Luna let out a cry as Maura quickly snapped her nose back into place. Jane's arm instantly went around her daughter, pulled her close and comforted her. "I'll get you something for the pain."
"I know, baby, I know," Jane soothed into her daughter's hair and wiped away the few tears that had fallen. "Just don't get into any more fights, okay?" Luna gave a small whimper and leaned into her mother for a hug.
"Here you go." Maura held out a glass of water and some painkillers to Luna.
"Thank you, Maura." Jane gave the blonde a grateful smile. "I didn't want her to spend hours sat with a broken nose at the ER."
"You'll have to be careful with your nose for a while." Maura looked at Luna. "I wouldn't advise anymore fights, even if they are for a good cause."
"Thank you." Luna gave a small smile from the comfort of Jane's arms. The sound of Jane's phone sounded throughout the room and she pulled it from her belt with a frown.
"I need to go," she sighed. "Come on, Luna, let's see if we can find you a spare desk upstairs while I work."
"She can stay here," Maura offered suddenly. "I've just got paperwork to fill in this afternoon. She can stay here in my office with me."
"Are you sure?" Jane frowned. "I don't want to impose on you."
"I can keep an eye on her nose for the afternoon this way. I really don't mind."
Jane looked from Maura down to her daughter in her arms. "Luna?"
"Can I look at dead people books?" The girl asked hopefully.
"No." Jane smiled and kissed her daughter's forehead before she stood up. She hesitated only briefly before she turned towards the door. "Behave yourself, do not annoy Dr. Isles, you hear me? Love you, baby."
"Love you too, ma."
"Thanks, Maura." Jane gave them both a smile before she left the office and headed towards the elevator.
"Thanks for letting me stay." Luna turned to Maura. "I want to be a doctor one day."
"Do you?" Maura's eyes lit up.
"Can I look at your books?" Luna pointed to the bookcase but had already stood from the sofa and made her way towards the books. "Do you work with Ma often?" She ran her finger along the spines as she read the titles.
"Yes, we often work cases together." Maura joined Luna at the bookcase and scanned the books until she found one that she thought would be age appropriate for the girl and pulled it down. Luna smiled widely and carried the book back to the sofa to read.
"She's mentioned you a few times," Luna commented before she was lost in the book open on her lap. Maura tilted her head as she watched the young girl read. Luna was a carbon copy of her mother in looks and it seemed attitude but she was sure Jane was never as invested in a book as her daughter currently was.

The afternoon passed quickly with Maura filling out her reports and Luna's head still in the book Maura had chosen for her. Neither had realised the time until Jane reappeared in the doorway.
"Hey, I hope she hasn't been any trouble." Jane walked over to her daughter and kissed the top of her head. "Good lord what are you reading?" She scrunched up her face at the book.
"Maura gave it to me." Luna beamed.
"Great." Jane straightened back up and looked over to the blonde who had suddenly began to panic that she had overstepped or given Luna the wrong thing.
"Sorry, I thought it was an appropriate book. I didn't realise."
Jane let out a small laugh. "She's the daughter of a detective, you don't have to worry. I'm just glad she's been no trouble."
"Oh." Maura felt relief flood her body. "No trouble. She's been reading all afternoon and her nose seems fine." She had made sure to check in with the girl often throughout the afternoon about her nose.
"Come on, kiddo, let's get you home. I need to make some phone calls and figure out who's going to look after you for the next two weeks." The brunette placed her hands on her hips and tilted her head in thought as she tried to remember everyone's schedules.
"Can't I stay here with Dr. Isles?" Luna pouted as she closed the book and put it on the coffee table in front of her. "I can read some more books."
"Uh, no." Jane shook her head. "You're not spending the next two weeks reading. You still have school work to do. Plus, Dr. Isles doesn't need a trouble maker like you invading her space." She spoke with tenderness in her voice and ruffled Luna's curls.
"I don't mind," Maura blurted, unsure why. She didn't exactly have experience with children and she rarely offered up her time to spend with others. "She can stay in my office while you work." Luna looked up at her mother with hopeful eyes as Jane pondered the idea.
"Fine," Jane relented and pointed at her daughter, "but you stay in the office and if Dr. Isles gets annoyed with you we find somewhere else."
"Deal." Luna grinned and grabbed her backpack from the floor. "Thanks Dr. Isles."
"Yeah, thanks Maura." Jane smiled gratefully. "For today and however long she doesn't annoy you for. It's saved me messing up any of my family's plans." Mother and daughter turned to leave the office but Jane stopped in the doorway and turned back. "Do you have any plans tonight? I'm just going to order us a pizza when we get home, did you want to join us, as a thank you? Totally get it if you don't want to. Don't feel like you have to."
"I have no plans." Maura smiled and shook her head, realising she had never been invited to just have pizza with someone. "You really don't have to buy me a pizza but I appreciate it."
"Great, let me give you our address." Jane walked back to the desk to quickly scribble down their address. "See you soon." The brunette smiled and joined her daughter in the doorway before they headed towards the elevators together. Maura looked down at the address written in front of her and ran her finger over the ink. Never before had she been invited for dinner at a colleague's house. Actually, she had never been invited to someone's house for dinner for just dinner. Any previous invites had been for more than just dinner and none of those dinners had been for pizza. There had been no reason for her to accept the invitation but for some reason she had found the fact that there was no reason to reject the invite was what made her say yes. Jane and Luna Rizzoli had suddenly opened a door inside of Maura and she was unsure where it would lead to but she found herself suddenly wanting to find out.
