Notes:

Suspects and Suspicions

The ringing of Renard's cell awoke them in the early hours making Nick groan, looking at the clock he could see it was only a few hours since they'd gone to bed. He settled himself comfortably on Renard's chest as he felt him roll over and reach for it off the bedside, he could feel the vibrations of Renard's words as he spoke upon the phone. After finishing the call, he began getting out of the bed much to Nick's protests, Renard lent down and kissed Nick before pulling him up and into the shower. Very little happened despite Nick's attempts much to both of their disappointments but Renard explained that he was needed at the station. Something about his words worried Nick but he swallowed his worry as he spotted Frank sat at the kitchen table coffee in hand.

Nick sleepily joined him while Renard was moving round the house getting ready, no words were spoken by them but the silence was comfortable as Nick waited for the caffeine to kick in. Frank watched Renard when it clicked with him and a slight panic crossed his face as he got up and thanked Nick for the last few days, before he put his mug in the sink and went to gather his things and head home to change for work. As the caffeine finally kicked in Nick got up and after washing the dishes he headed to shower, in the bedroom he found Renard getting dressed and after throwing a wolf whistle his way, he dodged the swat Renard aimed at his behind.

He mutter something about cheeky Grimm's before going back to his tie, Nick smiled as he stole a kiss before ducking into the bathroom. Quickly showering, shaving and brushing his teeth Nick came out in just a towel, it was Renard's time to growl as he eyed Nick up and down lustfully. Nick blushed as he ducked his head and slipped passed to grab his clothing from his closet, despite the fact that he had slept naked with Renard a few times now he still felt self-conscious about being barely clothed in front of him.

Renard felt Nick's sudden change as he stopped what he was doing, coming over he placed his hands on either side of Nick's hips and pulled him closer wrapping his arms round Nick. Kissing him sweetly Nick let out a sigh of relief and melted into his embrace. After a few moments his nervousness left him and Nick was able to pull on his clothing as long as he didn't look over at the other man.

"So, what's your plan for the day?" Renard asked breaking the silence making Nick jump.

"Don't know, I figured I'd go for a jog now. I've got to head into your station and talk to whoever is handling Barry's case" Nick said as he was searching round for his battered Walkman.

"Oh realy, I'll make sure I'm in my office when you swing by. Maybe we can grab lunch afterwards?" Renard asked trying not to allow his nervousness from seeping into his words as Nick jumped up in celebration of finding his Walkman.

"Cool Sean, I'd be made up to do that, are you sure about making your interest in me public?" Nick questioned nervously as he fiddled with the wire on his Walkman.

"I'm not ashamed of you Nick, I want you at my side whether in public or private" answered Renard with a smile as he took the arcane contraption off Nick and looked it over with a look of 'Realy' on his face.

"What? I've had it since I was fourteen, it's never seen me wrong" said Nick defensively as he took it back from Renard.

Making a mental note about gifts for his soon to be mate at a later date, Renard went back to getting dressed but never stopped talking to Nick,

"After all Nick what's the point of dating a hot bodied Grimm if I can't show you off" laughed Renard as Nick blushed, kissing Nick once again Renard wished him a good day and headed off to work.

Rosalee was busy setting out her stock while she had a lull in sales, Monroe was at home working on a clock he'd been excited to receive. She smiled as the memory of the forty something year old Blutbad male being reduced to an overgrown child at the mention of it. The smile on her face was far from leaving as the bell brought her back to reality, walking over to the counter she was met by a smartly dressed man in a suit. Something about him though had her hairs standing on end as she approached, but she hid her feelings behind her mask as she took her place behind the counter.

"Good morning how can I help you?" she asked as the man looked round.

"I'm looking for Fredrick Calvert" he spoke barely looking at her, more like through her.

"I'm sorry my brother passed away about two months ago, I'm his sister Rosalee Calvert, the shop belongs to me now" she said as she still couldn't shake the feelings.

The gleeful look upon his face chilled her to the bone, she swallowed hard but kept the smile on her face as he looked her dead in the eye. The sudden ripple that flowed over his skin before his features morphed and Rosalee understood why her instincts were screaming at her.

A Geier!

The man before her was a Geier.

"You have some nerve coming here, your not welcome in this shop" Rosalee growled as the man's expression turned ugly before he morphed back.

"Your brother was a stubborn fool too; I'd take our offer or dark things might come your way" with that the man stormed out the shop leaving Rosalee dazed and confused.

Rushing towards the door she locked it and closed it for the day, she returned to the back of the shop and slid down the wall shaking with adrenaline. Pulling out the phone she went to dial Nick but stopped, she could handle this for herself for now instead she called Monroe and told him she was coming home and that they needed to talk.

Hank was sat staring at his screen, he'd been trying to write up his report on the B case he'd been working, that once again had wound up in the weird pile but this time for much more them usual. That guy had turned up again, the guy who'd rushed in and saved him, the guy who'd turned up during the Sam Bertram case. Wherever there was strangeness going on he was in the middle of it, he was deep in his question when Wu approached his desk and dropped files on it making Hank jump.

"I'd offer you a nickel for your thoughts but I'd be being short changed" Wu said deadpan making Hank chuckle.

"Who's the mystery man?" he asked as he caught sight of the images on Hank's desk.

"According to our witness statements one Nickolas Burkhardt. But when I did a little digging the guys a ghost, last time his name surfaced is years ago at the death of one Kelly and Reed Burkhardt his parents" said Hank as Wu raised an eyebrow.

"Falling off the grid usually keeps you off the grid" he spoke up as he sat on Hank's desk.

"that's my thinking but he's shown up a lot around Portland in the last two months, and the confusing thing is every time everything hinky happens he's in the middle of it" sighed Hank.

"Well don't look now but Mr Hinky just walked in" said Wu as Hank looked past him and watched as Nick entered the bullpen before stopping to look around, but before either man could get up the Captain's office opened and Renard came out into the bullpen.

"Nicky" Renard called making Nick look up with a smile.

"Glad to see you found us ok" spoke Renard as Hank and Wu gave each other a look at the smile on the captains face.

"Yeah, I did Sean, are we still on for lunch?" Nick asked as Sean smiled and motioned for him to join him in his office, this left Hank and Wu shocked.

"It would seem he's close with the Captain, maybe that's why you've been seeing him." Wu spoke as the inuendo ladened tone coated his words.

Hank groaned as he didn't want to go there but he couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to this guy then he was letting on.

Nick sat down at Renard's desk with a smile upon his face, Renard gently brushed by him running his fingers over his arm before sitting down before him in his desk chair. Nick's smile filled him with happiness but he needed to keep up his mask, letting out a sigh Renard straightened up before speaking.

"Thank you for helping Frank again, it was a favour I'd forced upon you but you rose to the challenge. It will take time but Barry will come out a better man I hope, but he will at least have a chance to make things right. But because of these actions I have forced a conversation we'd needed to speak about to the back of my mind, days ago you wanted to inquire why I was dressed out of character. But what I should point out is that is the apparel I dress in when I attend to my regal duties, that day I was approached by a Reaper" Nick's appearance darkened as Renard watched the man, he loved fade and the Grimm rise to the forefront.

"They fear how quickly I'm rising to power, and the European royals are becoming fearful but they could stay smug given the distance. That was until you made your loyalty to myself known, rumours are reaching them and it's got them scrambling for what power they can find. The Reapers are using this to try and put pressure upon me to chase you away, because I've refused, they've threatened us both. My people are rallying those who support us in are name. for now, we are watching them and their movements, even though I've banished then from my Canton. The call this morning was another threat to me about having you around, I do not fear them or their threats" Renard growls and Nick watched him.

Nick moved to listen more as Renard explained why and what he was doing, how his most trusted were watching them both as well as the intake to Portland i.e., the docks, the airport and the roads. He swore no one was getting close to Nick without his approval. After he'd finished Renard stood and guiding Nick toward the bullpen, he passed him over to Hank's partner Officer Karl Welsh to take his statement, before asking him to return to his office afterwards.

Going back to his work Hank finally began his report, he watched as the Captain led the stranger to his partner so he could give his statement. Hank watched on as Karl left but the Captain lingered. Something about the small hidden smile on his face spoke of a deeper connection to the stranger than he was letting on, maybe Wu was right or maybe he was overworked but he had a feeling soon he'd know more. Time passed and Hank watch Karl return and the stranger head to the Captain's office, he spoke to Karl about the case, finding out that Nick's statements matched everyone else so the case was settled now until trial.

With a sigh Hank returned to his work until his name being called brought his attention to the Captain stood in his doorway. Getting up he joined him in his office, he was also shocked to see the guy in the photo's sat in a chair at the desk. Hank sat down beside him as he closed the door before Renard returned to his seat.

"Detective Hank Griffin meet Nick Burkhardt; you've probably wondering who he is and why he's been around so much? The answer has two reasons Hank,

firstly, he's a bounty hunter that I've been using but it's only recently that he's come to settle within Portland.

Secondly is the reason why he's come to settle here, Nick and I have been romantically involved with each other for a while now. He means a great deal to me so he's chosen to move to be closer, so we can try to make things work between us.

The reason why he's been stuck in the middle of things, well if I know Nick like I do…." The smirk on Renard's face made Nick blush slightly as Hank watched on

"Being a bounty hunter once and forever mean he can't help but getting involved with things, So, for now I'm going to kick a few cases that are not too sensitive to him, the department doesn't have enough Detectives to take on all the cases as we have a backlog. If you need his help in anything, I'm authorising him to be temporarily able to assist us" Renard explained as Hank nodded while not fully looking convinced.

Nick watched as Hank got up and left the office, once the door close Renard let out a frustrated sigh. before looking up at Nick with a walm smile. Nick couldn't help but return it as he watched Renard get up and gather his things, with all that had gone on he'd forgotten that he and Renard were meeting for lunch after giving his statement. A large smile broke over Nick's face as he lept to his feet and grabbed his hoodie, before he practically bounced out the door Renard just let out a bemused sigh while shaking his head but the smile never left his face as he followed behind Nick.
