Summary: Nick comes home, Sean return to work and life goes on. Things start falling apart
Notes:
On The Razors Edge
Nick was sat up happily in his hospital bed. His injuries were healing well, miraculously in the doctors words. The downside for Nick was that it left him always tired and fatigued, Sean had taken to working on his laptop while staying in Nick's room. Nick was also starting to become bored but his doctor's where airing on the side of caution, given the damage to his lung as well as his skull fracture. His sketch book sat abandoned at his side since his dizziness was making drawing hard, Renard was beside him laptop balanced upon his knee while he spoke in hushed tones on his phone as he coordinated with Captain Abrahams on the day to day running of his unit.
Nick felt for his mate, he knew he was torn between staying with him and allowing an outsider to take over what he'd spent years building up. Renard was not a hands-off Captain like many, he shared in the triumphs and failures with his people. He was on first name bases with all the men and women under his command, he knew birthdays, anniversaries and the kids names, he was more than a boss he was a leader and handing all that off was not easy even if it was for his mate.
Nick moved his hand over and intertwined his fingers with Renard's making him look over and smile, the small squeeze was an acknowledgement of affection while he worked. Nick laid back as he stared at the ceiling with a sigh, the white walls he'd been staring at for a few days where getting to him. Finally the sparseness of everything got to him, Nick decided to push himself up with a groan as he swallowed back the dizziness so Renard would not see he felt his muscles protest until he was sat upright.
"Nicky?" came a worriedly questioning tone from Renard's direction, as Nick felt the looming presence at his side.
"Sean I'm fine, I'm going stare crazy staring at the ceiling for all hours of the day. My back hurts being stuck in the same position, just let me do something anything that isn't being sat here watching you and everyone else tiptoe round me" Nick said with a growl as Sean sat down with a look of defeat upon his face.
"I'm sorry mo Ghrá, I didn't mean to snap at you. I'm frustrated and should not be taking it out on you" Nick sighed calmer as he hugged Renard.
"I know Mon coeur, I understand that you are. I'm also aware that I'm not helping by bringing my work with me" getting to his feet Renard lent forward and kissed the top of Nick's head.
"So how about I go talk to a few people and see what I can do about making things more comfortable for you?" Renard chuckled as the 'happy puppy look' Nick gave him was evident of the level of his frustrations.
Monroe puttered round Nick's kitchen with an air of carefree happiness as he, Rosalee and Hank made one last check over the house before setting the table for Nick and Renard's return. It had been a week since Nick had ended up in the hospital, 24 hours earlier Renard had contacted Rosalee to let her know he was bring Nick home, that he was becoming a nightmare patience because of frustration. She had there for set her evil plan in motion roping Hank, Monroe, Sam and Serena into help prepare for his return. Hank was still feeling guilty about his actions even though Nick had told him he didn't blame him, things within the Pd had calmed down but most we're still weary of Captain Abrahams.
"They're here" Rosalee called out as Monroe cleaned his hand while Hank and Rosalee waited.
Nick looked haggard and tired as Renard held him up as he opened up the door, Nick perked up as saw his friends awaiting him. Pulling away from Renard he threw his arms around Rosalee hugging her and then Monroe, Hank was slightly uncomfortable as a half dead Grimm threw himself at him in a hug. Renard chuckled at the interactions before taking pity on Hank and taking Nick back in hand before steering him to the set table. Nick was taken back having not seen the set table when he'd entered, sitting down he didn't realise how hungry he was until Monroe put the food down in front of them.
"Wow guys you did all this for me?" Nick asked with surprise as the group nodded.
"It was the leased we could do dude, your family and after a week of hospital food we all figure you'd need a good meal to help you get back on your feet" said Monroe warmly as he sat down and joined the group.
"Thank you all, this is more then we could have expected. We are both grateful for having a family that has stood by us through all of this" said Renard with a smile as he raise his glass politely to the group.
They ate and chatted catching up with each other, Hank filled them all in with news from the Pd and Rosalee spoke about the Spice Shop and the aftereffects of the attack and Nick's hospitalization within the Wesen community. Nick began to look guilty but Rosalee stopped him pointing out that the community was worried about him as a person not a Grimm, that they were worried about something running free that took out the local Grimm. Rosalee pointed out anyone would be worried about that, she also joked that he should be prepared for the gift from the community when they find out he's home now. Renard let out a groan making Nick look at him, Renard promised to explain more later but for now to know that the wesen community could be overprotective.
The rest of the night faded into comfortable conversations and family affections, as the night wore on and the group bid their goodbyes leaving Nick and Sean to settle for the night. Nick flopped genteelly down on the couch resting his head back with his eyes closed, Renard smiled at the sight from the doorway as he closed the door and turned out the light around the living room. Picking up a blanket from the closet he placed it over Nick, Sean then put a film on the tv before settling under the blanket
pulling Nick closer to him. They settled in for the night enjoying the closeness for the night.
Renard's return to work was like the returning hero arriving home, getting off the elevator he could feel the sombre mood before he even entered the Bullpen. Stopping within the entrance he looked up from his phone he looked around, a sadness seemed to have fallen over all which made Renard grit his teeth and growl under his breath as his gaze fell upon his office. The sight that met him made him growl more, the blind where down and his office screamed 'don't bother me' making his blood boil.
Pulling his satchel up on his shoulder he allowed his royal side to bleed through before marching up to his office, around him he became aware of the hushed whispers around him as he knocked harshly on the window.
"ENTER" came a unwelcoming tone from within, pushing open the door he was met by a deer in the headlights look on the face of Captain Abrahams.
"SssSean?" he stuttered as Renard closed the door behind him, placing his bag down on his couch.
"Thomas how nice to see you, I hope all has been well? My people haven't been giving you too much of a hard time?" the sickly-sweet tone Renard used through gritted teeth dripped with venom while being dressed up in all the regality his Royal upbring could muster.
Moving to sit on the edge of the desk, this made Captain Abrahams nervous as Renard refused to use the vacant chair. This was his subtle way of establishing his dominance over his domine within his office, this was Renard's world human or otherwise and no one was going to treat his people with anything other than the highest respect. Captain Abrahams squirming under Renard's gaze, the silence was deafening as Renard just sat with his hands on his knee then suddenly and without warning Renard woged and moved from his position to right up in Captain Abrahams face.
Letting out a high-pitched squeak Captain Abrahams's face rippled before wogeing into a Rooster like wesen, who looked like he was about to be plucked. Breathing heavy (more so for show then in anger) Renard gritted his teeth making his already fighting appearance seem ghastlier.
"Now Thomas listen and listen well, my people are the best of the best and they deserve all the respect they have earned. You have single handedly turned my unit into a graveyard, so I suggest before I change my mind, I subject you pack up your things and leave quickly and efficiently without a word" he growled as Captain Abrahams nodded fearfully before he woged back and smiled.
"Good, now I believe you're in my chair?" said Renard normally as Captain Abrahams lept up grabbed his case and took off.
Renard chuckled to himself before inspecting his chair with an unimpressed grimace on his face, with a sigh he got up and headed out of the office only to be met with a standing ovation from his people. With a smug smile upon his face, he allowed them to continue for a moment, after all he wasn't above having his ego stroked now and again.
"Thank you all, not that I know what it is for? Before you all ask yes, I am back, no I'm not giving you hazard pay/emotion compensation for my absence..." he gave Wu a scowl at that comment.
"And for those who want to know/care my fiancé is on the road to recover, he is home from the hospital. Now back to work you all" laughed Renard as rounds of 'welcome back sir' 'glad your back' and 'happy your fiancé's ok' rung throughout the pen as he headed back into his office.
Once the door was closed Renard gave out a sigh as he reached into his draw and pulled out a pack of wipes, he was rubbing down his chair when the door was knocked upon. Looking up he wasn't surprised to find Hank and the door, signalling for him to enter he returned to want he was doing. Hank slipped in and held back the laugh when he realised what Renard was doing.
"Wipe that look off your face detective Griffin" Renard chuckled from his position without looking up.
"Yeah, well you didn't have to put up with him for a week" said Hank with a shudder
"I'm not surprised Gallus Domesticus, are usually loud, messy and standoffish" Renard said casually as Hank looked at him.
"A what?"
"A Gallus Domesticus, a domestic chicken. Theres a reason he was posted to the cold case unit" Renard said with a sigh as he sat down on the edge of his desk rubbing the bridge of his nose.
"Fun" sighed Hank with a laugh
"So welcome back Captain, here's the reports and cases from the week, Captain Abrahams didn't seem interested in them" said Hank making Renard growl and sigh at the same time as he took the pile off Hank before dismissing him, looking at the pile Renard sighed again at the size of it, before firing off a message to Captain Hartford about Captain Abrahams conduct before settling into work.
Nick's sat shirtless on the bed within the doctor's office, his face looked worse than it was as did his body. His skin looked like a patch work of black, blue, purple and sickly yellow bruises, with a spattering of angry red healing stiches and as well as his long-healed scars. The beautiful young doctor who was chatting away with him while attending to his injures made Nick feel more at ease, her stunning black and purple hair was done up in a plat. Her tanned skin was complimented by her walm amber eyes that danced with mirth.
"Sooo Nick, should I even ask what brings you back into the office" she laughed making Nick blush like a little boy caught doing something he shouldn't.
"In my defence this want my fault this time" Nick answered as she came over and began examining him.
"I know, I was called in when you were brought in. You scared us all, not to mention none of us knew what to do when the Prince shutdown" Mia answered with a sad shudder making Nick look at the floor, seeing his reaction she sighed and pulled Nick close.
Before Nick could protest the gentle sound of purring flooded his ears, but it felt like it was flowing through his veins. Looking up he was met by her beautiful amber eyes and the pure white fur of her wesen form, her perky ears twitched as her smile made Nick feel better in the same way Rosalee did. Nick had a weakness for the fox wesen and their purr always seemed to calm him, Mia being a Vulpes (Fenic Fox) helped to make him feel safe around her.
She was well aware of Nick and Sean bond, just like all of the wesen of Portland. But she admitted that like many who had come to befriend the young Grimm, she had come to see him as a brother and being the eldest of a large family she welcome the chance to talk to someone other than her siblings.
"I hate that I caused him so much pain, Sean has so much to worry about he didn't need to worry about me to" Nick snapped making Mai give him the older sister look.
"Nick do not think like that, the prince loves you bond or not. Part of loving someone is standing with them through good times and bad, it's no secret within the wesen community that the Prince had been shut off before you turned up. You getting hurt hit him harder than he expected, do not blame yourself for your injures. And don't overdo things because you don't want to look weak in front of your mate" she said sternly as she handed him his pill and a list of things to ask Rosalee for to aid his Grimm healing.
Councillor Jackson sat in the dim light of his office within his home, a glass of scotch within his hand as he skimmed thorough his phone. A knock at his door echoed through the silence of the house, he yelled 'enter' and wasn't surprised to see Sal Butrell and his two brothers enter. Sitting down the three men took the offered cigars, chuckling as they lit up, they waited for him to speak up.
"it seems our friends have given us an opening just as they promised, the Prince's loyalties are split with his pet out of action. They intend to take advantage of this and start sowing seeds of doubt and fear within his inner circle, this too is a good opportunity for us. It's time we start closing up operations that may have otherwise brought down the wrath of the prince upon us, while his attentions are far from his people" laughed Councillor Jackson as the other nodded.
"I know a few we can call in that would put a few outspoken pain's in our ass back into their place, I agree it's time to take back what was taken from us" laughed Sal as he and his brothers stood up, Councillor Jackson stood up and shook his hand.
"Looks like we're heading out, got a late-night meeting about a bridge" laughed Sal and his brothers before they headed out while Councillor Jackson had a few calls to make.
The air was still filled with the chill of winter as Nick arrived outside of Monroe's, his injures were still affecting him hence the taxi ride and not his bike but he was more independent then he had been. Balancing a small container holding fresh pastries and hot coffee he knocked on the door, after a few moments and a few audible complaints from within it slowly creaked open. Monroe's face was blank for a moment until he realised what Nick was carrying, the smile that broke over his face was worth the early morning wake up. Not that Nick was realy complaining he'd already been up seeing Sean off to work; he'd began missing the company. Since being injured he'd attempted to spend time with Sean but ever interaction they had seemed to be tainted with guilt.
It had taken time but Sean was getting better at forgiving himself, so Nick didn't push but instead he made time to seek out his friends and spend time with them. Sitting down on the couch he smiled as Rosalee appeared from the kitchen hugging him, they both sat down and while chatting and eating they caught up with everything going on in Nick's life's and his issues with Sean and his guilt. On the flipside Nick came to know about the comings and going of the spice shop, the fact that many of the Wesen customers asked after him and missed chatting to him. Monroe told Nick about how his presence had even started helping his own business out and how he'd received more requests for expertise because of their friendship.
He excitedly told him about how he even had a job later on, it was a vey rare job and he'd been dying to work on a clock like it for a long time. Nick smiled as his best friend could barely hold his excitement in as he spoke about the one thing he love; it made Nick happy to share in this even if he didn't fully understand it. Soon time had passed and Rosalee was getting ready to head to the shop while Monroe headed off to his job, Nick got up and explained he was hoping to grab lunch with Sean before he was going to visit Serena for a bit. Rosalee offer Nick a ride making him smile as they both wished Monroe goodbye.
The ride to the Pd was pleasant and relaxed, Rosalee smiled at him as she waved him off. She couldn't help but chuckle to herself as he disappeared into the station before heading off. Nick was in a better mood as he head through the now familiar hall's and corridors, he groaned slightly as his shoulder ached a little while being in the sling, though it was mostly healed he still had to keep it in there for a few more days. After all, explaining his Grimm healing was a lot more complicated after how badly he'd been injured, getting to the elevator he hit the button for the second floor before happily humming to himself while he waited for the door to ping.
Getting out of the elevator Nick spotted Sean straight away, not that it was hard he stood out in the middle of the Bullpen. Nick stood off watching from the sidelines with a smile upon his face, it wasn't often he got chance to see his mate in his element. Yes, he'd seen him in his duty's as Prince of Portland but rarely did he see him as the captain of the Portland Pd.
"He has a very commanding presence, doesn't he?" laughed Wu from behind Nick making him snort.
"That he does" laughed Nick as he caught Sean's eye making him flash Nick a loving smile before signalling for him to join him in his office.
Pushing off from his spot Nick bid Wu goodbye before heading toward the office, he greeted several of the officers and detectives he knew before stopping beside Hank's desk with a walm smile.
"Hey Hank, how's things?" he chuckles as Hank rolls his eyes
"That well" he asked making Hank laugh
"Four robber's, two murders and a missing pet. Take a guess which one's giving us the most trouble?" he sighed as he picked up the phone to make a call.
"Suck's to be you" laughed Nick as he bid Hank goodbye and headed into Renard's office.
Sean greeted him warmly as Nick threw his arms round him, closing the door he kissed Nick sweetly before they both sat down. Sean explained he needed to finish up a few things before they could leave, but Nick didn't mind he was happy to work on his phone. Sean was grateful and asked Nick how he was feeling, Nick raised his slinged arm slightly with a weak smile.
"ache and restricted" Nick answered with a sigh.
"I understand how you feel, but this is for the best Mon coeur. Even with your advanced healing your body still need to take it easy" Sean sighed as Nick nodded but pouted at the same time before falling back into the comfortable silence.
It didn't take long for Renard to finish off what he was doing, and after chatting to several of his detectives he was ready for them to head off. Nick had a smile on his face that warmed his heart.
Monroe's bug pulled into the driveway of an out of the way, every instinct he had was suddenly on high alert. He had a bad feeling and a pit in his stomach, he quickly sent off a text to Nick and Rosalee with were he was before approaching the closed business. The lights were off and the building seemed to he abandoned, but this wasn't unusual for a start up to have him attend to this before doors were opened to the public. Knocking at the door, the feeling of being watched only got worse. A figure appeared on the balcony above him, Monroe called up to the woman but before anything could be said his world went blank as pain tore through the back of his head. A pack of thugs pushed him to the ground before letting lose on him with bats, fists and boots, as another figure joined the woman upon the balcony.
"Make sure he lives to pass on the message" said the man in a heavy French accent as he passes the woman a roll of money as he watched on from the balcony with a chuckle.
Rosalee arrived at the Spice shop not long after dropping Nick off, her mood was light and happy as she prepared for her usual day of coughs, colds and overprotective parents. Putting on the kettle she headed into the back, she scanned the shelves and took note of what was missing and what was over stocked. She heard her phone bleeping in the distance of the shop, she figured that she'd received the usual 'I'm here' text from Monroe. She loved him dearly but she was aware of how safety conscious he was, it was a trait she loved in him. Thoughts of Monroe made her smile as she went back to her work.
Once done she headed to the small kitchenette to make herself her morning tea, with a smile upon her face she picked up her phone and began checking her messages when suddenly the sound of breaking glass made her jump. Dropping her cup, she raced through to shop she was met by her whole front window caved in and several masked individuals stood in the shop with bats. Two of the intruders spotted her making Rosalee turn on her heels and raced through to the back locking the door, the intruders started pounding on the door. Her heart was racing as she knew the door wouldn't hold out for long, remembering her phone within her pocket she sent out a panicked text just as her door gave way.
On instinct she made for the back door, taking off through the back ally and off towards one of the neighbouring store. The intruders don't make chase but one of the takes off his hood and with a sick smile on his face he pulls out his cell.
"Its done, she's run no way she's forgetting this" the man said with a sick laugh as he and the others spray a large symbol on the walls before leaving the shop.
Serena and Frank had just finished a rather long and draining case, they both were looking forward to the coffee they were going to treat themselves to before returning to the their office to finish up. A small vendor was sell food close by so they stopped off and grabbed a bite before heading to the garage were Frank's car remained. It was dark and grotty for such a high-end area but they didn't mind given what they both were, over the years it had kept those who would try something at bay.
But not today, it was Frank who first realised they were being followed. He alerted Serena putting her on guard as they walked through the darkened lot, they drew their stalkers deeper into their trap before they both woged and Serena shifted into battle mode. The fight didn't last long after all a fully grown Jägerbar and a powerful Hexenbiest were more then a match for a handful of unorganized Wesen thugs. Serena pulled out her cell and made a few calls as Frank check through the pockets of the thugs hoping to find a clue to who their attackers where.
Nick and Sean sat happily in a small café close to the Pd, it was nice to spend a few moments away from the stress of the world. Sean knew things between him and Nick had become a little strained since the attack, he knew he did all he could but he couldn't shake the feeling of guilt and responsibility for Nick getting hurt. It was his canton and he let Stark slip through, he was so distracted by the Reapers he lost focus, Nick had told him he was too focused on to many things and a part of him knew Nick was right.
He let out a sigh as he dropped his head in defeat, Nick caught this and reached out and grabbed his hand. Sean looked up and was met by the smile upon Nick's face, he gave Nick a weak smile as their food arrived and they ate in silence. Sean still couldn't shake off the ghost of the past as they ate and it hung heavy on him.
"You can't let this keep you down Sean, your self-imposed guilt is destroying you. It's going to cost you our relationship if you keep blaming yourself, don't get me wrong I'm going to fight tooth and nail to keep us together but I can't fight for you if I'm fighting against you too" Nick said as he tightened his grip on Sean's hand as he let out a sigh.
"I know Mon coeur, but the image of you laying injured at the bottom of the stairs can not be erased from my mind" Sean once again sighed as Nick nodded as he pulled his arm out of the sling and placed it on Sean's shoulder.
He gave Nick a walm smile as Nick moved over from his seat to sit beside Sean, pulling him close Nick comforted his older mate allowing the tension he'd been holding onto fade. As Sean let out a sigh and Nick lent into kiss him both their cell phone let out their shrilled calls, both men chuckled uncomfortably as they pulled them out and answered. Both sat back-to-back so neither saw as the others mood changed and their faces fell, as they both end the calls and turned back to each other they both realised something was going down.
"Rosalee's been attacked, the Spice shop is a mess. She'd fled to a safe space" said Nick in a panic
"A group of thugs tried it with Serena and Frank, but they underestimated a full grown Jägerbar and a powerful Hexenbiest. They delt with them easy and I've instructed them to contact Hank" Sean growled as he and Nick paid for their meal and took off for the Spice Shop.
