After breaking out of the urn and destroying it with her magic, Elsa walks out of Zelena's barn, her steps leave an icy trail behind her. She heads toward an empty street near the woods and stops in front of the Storybrooke sign. Her magic kicks in, and the sign slowly freezes over as she keeps staring at it. Meanwhile, elsewhere in town, Walter and Leroy are on their way home, bickering about Walter's driving. Suddenly, the radio turns to static, and Walter dozes off at the wheel. Panicking, Leroy grabs the steering wheel as their van barrels toward Elsa, who is continuing to walk on the street toward the town. Startled, Elsa freezes the van in its tracks, knocking both dwarves out cold. The burst of her ice magic ripples through the town, signaling her presence in the town to another person with ice magic who's currently working in their ice cream shop, who then decides to flip the open sign to closed.
She leaves the shop in an icy blue smoke and to her lair where she changes into proper attire and where she approaches a cell. With a snap of her fingers, a series of pained screams turned into monstrous shrieks. She uses her magic to open the cell bars where she enters the cell where an icy creature with long, white hair and striking blue glowing angry eyes is chained. Its skin is covered in frost and ice-like tendrils that cover its face and their body and as well as having sharp, menacing icy teeth. It pulls on the chains but it fails to escape its icy prison, shrieking, letting out a puff of smoke from its mouth (1).
"Hello, my dear, don't worry its just me. I didn't mean to wake you up," She asked the creature, which was beginning to calm down, making only grunting sounds. Seeing that the creature was now calmed down, she removed the chains that held the creature's wrists. "I woke you up because we have a new visitor in town I have been waiting for a long time. I want you to keep a close eye not only her, but our other sister. Just don't let the others see you. They have dealt with enough creatures in this town. Don't let anything happen to the both of them, do you understand?" The creature nods, adding a monstrous grunt. She watches as her monster pounces and runs out of the cave as fast as it could in within seconds, disappearing into the night.
The next morning, Elsa strolls down the main street, her usual icy trail following behind. A motorcyclist zooms past, startling her and making it hard to stay calm and keep her powers under control. As she walks, her attention is caught by a beautiful white wedding dress in a shop window, and she moves closer to take a better look. Meanwhile, up above, the ice creature leaps from roof to roof hanging onto them using its icy claws, staying out of sight from the town residents, but keeping a close watch on the town's new guest (2).
Emma, David, Mary Margaret, and Henry are walking down the main street with baby Neal when Leroy and Walter rush up to Emma, Leroy explains last night and Emma sees an ice trail nearby, allowing Emma and Hook to follow it to a warehouse. Inside, Elsa hides as they approach but accidentally summons a giant ice creature out of fear. Emma lowers her gun and trying to calm the creature but the ice monster blasts them with icy wind, knocking them down and forcing them to retreat as it chases them through the street. Meanwhile, Elsa stays hidden, hearing the townspeople's panic when a newspaper landed near her, and she picks it up, staring at a photo of Gold and Belle where she sees something in the picture.
Emma notices the creature is actually scared by the noise, and starts heading toward the forest, where Emma, David, and Hook follow it, leading them to run into the Merry Men, and tell them about the snow monster, who at the right moment approaches the group and tries to attack it with every weapon they have available in their person, including Emma's magic but this leads to the ice monster knocking them out, leaving them defenseless and the ice monster ready to kill them. But the ice creature who was watching this all happen, stops the ice monster by landing on a rock, and shrieking as loud as it can, getting its attention, which it does and the ice creature runs as far as it could away from them with the ice monster following suit (3).
The creature leads the ice monster to the Snow Queen's lair where the Snow Queen uses her magic to destroy the ice monster, destroying it into millions of tiny pieces. "Tell me, are they both okay?" The ice creature nods, adding a grunt. "Good... soon, I finally will have a family that will love me. They will love me, I know they will." Hours later, it was now midnight, and at the front of the pawnshop, from the paper she found, Elsa goes to the pawn shop, breaking in at the same time Ingrid leaves the ice cream shop and noticed Elsa in the pawn shop on the other side of the street, she smiles. Inside, Elsa looks around the shop, she finds the snowflake necklace she gave to her sister saying, "Don't worry, Anna… I will find you."
Ingrid hurried back into the ice cream shop just as Elsa stepped out of Gold's shop. Elsa slipped into the alley between the pawn shop and the store next door, staying out of sight. She watched the people walking by and the cars rolling down the street. Then, with a determined look, she said, "Until we're together, no one's leaving this town." She clenched her fists, and ice started to form over them. Suddenly, a huge ice wall is shot up from the ground on the area of the town wall. Elsa whispered, "Anna, I promise I'll find out what happened to you." The ice wall results in the town to have a town wide blackout, and Ingrid who knew who was the cause of the blackout returned to her lair when she ordered the creature go and check what Elsa did and if the two ever crossed paths, stay where it was and keep an eye on them.
This results in Emma, David, and Hook to check out the cause. The two learn from Hook that the wall surrounds the whole town. Emma noticed something near the wall and decided to check it out. She climbed over the barrier and found herself exploring a new area. That's when she spotted Elsa. Curious, Emma asked what Elsa was doing there and if it had anything to do with the wall. Elsa explained she was looking for her sister, holding up a snowflake necklace she'd found in the pawn shop. Emma shook her head. "I have no idea. But if you want my help, you're gonna have to help me too. Tell me, who are you looking for."
"Her name is Anna," Elsa said.
As they talked, David and Hook suddenly showed up, interrupting them. Their arrival startled Elsa, and David even pointed a gun at her, making the queen more scared than she was ever before, resulting in both ladies to be trapped on the other side of the wall. Inside the ice wall, Elsa orders Emma to bring her what her sister.
Emma hears a crackle on her walkie-talkie. It's David, asking if she can hear him. She picks it up and answers, "Yeah, I'm here."
Elsa, looking anxious, interrupts. "Tell them to go find Anna!"
Emma nods and speaks into the walkie-talkie. "Dad, I'm with someone—a woman looking for her sister, Anna. She thinks Anna's in town because she found her necklace in Gold's shop. Can you guys try to find her before things get worse?"
"Worse how?"
"Find Anna, or else I will freeze this town and everyone in it,"
Believing this threat, Hook and David leave to find whoever Anna is at the same time the creature arrives, as it was hiding and watching from the forest. It climbs up the ice wall, finding a weak point in order to get it. It finds a weak point at the top of the wall, and uses its deadly ice talons to scratch its way inside, where it jumps in and sees the two together. Following Ingrid's orders, it hides behind an ice wall and watch them (4 and 5). Emma was starting to feel the freezing cold getting to her. Shivering, she looked at Elsa and asked, "What about that snow monster you made?" Elsa frowned. "I'll do whatever it takes to get my sister back." Emma glanced down and sighed. "I'm sorry about your necklace. It fell into the ice below us." Elsa's eyes widened as she spotted the necklace, trapped in a chunk of ice under a small gap in the ground.
"Maybe you can melt it to get it back," Emma suggested. Elsa hesitated, and Emma studied her. "You can't control your magic, can you?" she guessed. "When you told my dad to back off, that was a warning, not a threat. You're not doing this on purpose." Elsa looked surprised, asking what makes her think she knows her, but then Emma added something even more unexpected. "I have magic too." Elsa stared at her. "You do?" She begins opening up to Emma.
"Anna helps me control it," Elsa explained. "If I can find her, she can help me fix all of this. The wall, the ice—everything." She paused and looked at Emma. "Maybe your magic can get us out of here." Emma shook her head, frustrated. "I've been trying, but nothing's working." She slumped to the ground, clearly exhausted from the cold. Seeing Emma struggle, Elsa sat down next to her, trying to keep her company asking her questions to help. "Were you born with magic, or were you cursed?" she asked gently. Emma shook her head.
"I didn't even know I had powers until recently. I grew up in a place without magic, and I didn't have my parents around to help me figure it out." Elsa nodded sadly. "Parents don't always help. I was just a kid when I became queen. I wasn't ready at all. Sometimes it feels like it's too much, and even when I try to stop it, people still get hurt. And it's hard because… I've never met anyone else like me." Emma shivered again, her body starting to give in to the cold. She lay down on the icy floor, and Elsa stayed close, not wanting her new friend to feel alone.
David and Hook rush into Gold's shop, hoping he can help. David quickly explains, "Emma's trapped under some ice by a woman with ice powers. The woman says she's looking for her sister, Anna, and she thinks Anna's here because she found her necklace in your shop." Belle searches the shop and finds a card with information about the necklace. When she hands it to them, David stares at it and suddenly realizes he knows who Anna is.
Remembering his encounter with her in the Enchanted Forest, he steals Bo Peep's crook which could help Elsa find where Anna is. Suddenly, Elsa's voice crackles over the walkie-talkie. Her message makes their blood run cold: Emma's freezing to death.
Hook hears a crackle on the walkie-talkie and Elsa's voice comes through. "Emma's freezing to death!" she says, panicked.
David and Hook rush back to the ice wall. "Elsa, what's going on?" David asks through the walkie-talkie.
"She's freezing, turning blue," Elsa replies, her voice shaking.
"You've got to find a way out," David tells her.
"I can't!" Elsa snaps. "I need Anna."
David sighs. "We don't have Anna right now, but we'll find her, I promise. For now, you've got to do this on your own."
"I can't control this," Elsa admits.
"I know how you feel," David says. "You're trapped, fighting a battle you think you can't win. But it's the kind of battle you have to fight, or you'll die."
"I'll survive," Elsa says, "but Emma might not."
"Survival isn't enough," David tells her. "You have to live."
That phrase catches Elsa's attention. "Where did you hear that?" she asks.
David smiles. "You know where."
Elsa realizes something. "You know Anna," she says softly.
David nods. "A long time ago, Anna helped me. She saved my life and my sister's. And now, I need you to save Emma's. Anna wouldn't want you stuck in an ice cave forever. Now melt that ice!" Elsa takes a deep breath and focuses her magic, blasting a hole into the ice, creating a big enough hole for them to walk out of. David rushes to Elsa. "I owe Anna everything," he tells her. "She helped me once, and now we're going to help you. This isn't over. We'll find her."
At the same time the two escape the ice cave, the ice creature pounces towards the hole it entered in, leaving the ice wall, and following the car where Elsa and Emma are, jumping from tree branch to tree branch and apartment to apartment. When the four reaches the Blanchard Apartment, the creature climbs up the wall like a spider, its icy fingernails attaches to the brick wall, allowing it to get to the floor where the loft Emma and her parents were, watching it from the window (6). At the same time, Ingrid is in the ice cream shop when the last customer exits, and seeing no possible customers entering, she uses her magic to locate where her ice creature was, using one of the mirrors in her shop, which allows her to see what the creature sees, and is thrilled when she sees both Emma and Elsa together.
Back at the apartment, Hook and Henry help Emma get warm. As Emma starts to recover, she looks at Elsa. "Are you okay?" she asks.
Elsa shakes her head. "Not really. I've lost my sister, and now I've lost her necklace too. I don't have anything of hers left." With that, David grabs the shepherd's crook, saying it can help them find Anna, however when they use it, they see nothing coming out of it. The creature then leaves at the same time Emma hears something, which was a soft, steady sound. Everyone in the room goes quiet, and Elsa quickly realizes it's a heartbeat.
Emma looks at Elsa and smiles. "We might not know exactly where your sister is, but we know the most important thing."
Elsa's eyes light up. "Anna's alive."
David places a reassuring hand on Elsa's shoulder. "I told you. We'll find her."
Later, Elsa and Emma head back to the ice wall. Emma looks at it and says, "You might not have full control over it, but what you can do is seriously amazing. It's one-of-a-kind." Elsa gives a small smile, remembering what she told Emma earlier. "I'm the only one with magic like this." Emma chuckles, believing that probably a good thing for everyone, and Elsa agrees. "There's no need for this wall anymore." She focuses, trying to use her ice magic to bring it down, but... nothing happens. Confused, she tries again. Still nothing.
"That's weird. I should be able to take it down. I'm the only one who can do this."
Emma starts to wonder too. "If it's not you keeping it up, then what is?"
Meanwhile, inside the ice wall, a strange creature moves on all fours, sniffing around like it's searching for something. Its claws scrape across the icy floor until it finds a small crack. Reaching into the hole, it pulls out a necklace—Anna's necklace (7). Before it can do anything else, Ingrid steps out from behind a nearby wall. She looks at the creature and calmly says, "Give me the necklace." Without hesitation, the creature obeys, handing it over to her open palm, which she then grabs using her other hand to let the creature see the entire necklace.
"Do you recognize this? Did you recognize our new guest?" Ingrid asks the creature, it responds by shaking its head, "Good, that means you are still in control like always, and its time for my plan to begin." She says with an ice cold smile.
What or who do you think the ice creature is? This take is one of my many frozen beliefs that Frozen is not Frozen unless this happens.
