Hello all! Here is a project that I've been working on! It's Co-written by QueenNox27, author of Nymph's Trove.

This is a companion piece to my Celestial Phoenix Story the Rewritten version.

This story will follow the mages of the Ace Kingdom, known as Paladins. The Paladins are the equivalent of the Magic Knights from the Clover Kingdom. This story is a SYOC, and we will be accepting Thirteen OCs. Submissions are due on Friday, February 28, 2025. You can find the SYOC form on my profile page.

Hello everyone! Here is the first chapter! As always let me know what you guys think!

1. The Ace Kingdom

Ace Kingdom

Royal Court

The Citadel

A woman with smooth peach-toned skin, thick curls of dark red-brown hair that flowed down her back and charcoal gray eyes with lighter flecks of gray near her pupils strode quickly through the polished halls of the Citadel, her eyes set on the ground.

She wore a simple slate blue tunic with quarter sleeves and an orange sash around her waist. Her legs were wrapped in black, soft, leather leggings. Over her outfit, she wore a worn-down and slightly tattered rich burgundy cloak, the hood pulled tightly over her head.

Today should have been simple, all she had wanted to do was do her tasks for the day, maybe go on a mission, and be invisible. Luckily for her, she had accomplished the first two; her task for today had been to archive the new books delivered to the library, and then she was called on a mission by Idalia. Her day had been nicely average until the end of the mission, where her teammate, Remy had dragged her through the portal back to the Citadel and forced her to cook with him.

It wouldn't have been an issue, but by that point, all she had wanted to do was avoid anyone else for the rest of the day and accomplish her last goal: Be invisible.

That eyepatch-wearing mage had ruined it. It didn't matter if he was a world-class Chef, he had thrown off her day. The only bright side was that there was daylight left, and she could still reach her last goal, to be invisible; all she had to do was-

"Oh! What a surprise!" Her shoulders slumped at the voice behind her; there went her chance for a peaceful night. "You're back from your mission already, Kleo?"

With a resigned sigh, she turned and faced the speaker. It was a man. And a beautiful one at that, too beautiful in Kleoné's opinion.

He had soft, flawless, fair skin and silky, smooth black hair that was swept out of his face, revealing dazzling midnight blue eyes that were framed by thick, dark lashes. He was tall, more lanky than broad-shouldered, but no less muscular than some of the other male Paladins.

And if he didn't stand out enough, he just had to wear a rich dark blue kimono with a wisteria flower pattern.

"I'm glad you got back safe!" He continued, waving at her as he neared.

Kleoné narrowed her eyes at him; it should be a crime to be so pretty and cheerful at any time of day. What did the guy run on?

"But where's Idalia? Aren't you two always together?" He asked, looking around as if expecting to see a flash of bright orange hair.

"She got called home," Kleoné explained plainly, moving past him so she could continue to her room. "And we're not together twenty-four-seven, Mikazuki."

"I guess not, but it's a shame, you're happier when you're around her." He smiled, trailing behind her.

"She's... what I like to consider a friend," Kleoné said simply, looking down at her feet. She hoped the orange-haired woman considered her a friend too; it was always stressful to be around Idalia, but she couldn't deny that it was also fun.

"Consider? I'm sure she'd be hurt if she heard you say that," Mikazuki hummed, still walking after her, and part of her wondered what he even wanted. "I think she considers you a dear friend."

She bit her lip again; she hoped so since Kleoné thought the same. "Is there something you need Mikazuki?" She asked, pulling the hood tighter over her head and peering at him from under it.

"Don't mind me, we're just heading in the same direction, I'm heading to my room." He smiled back at her serenely.

"You're room is in the other direction." Her voice was blunt as she looked at him.

"Is it? Silly me, you have to forgive me, I have a horrible sense of direction." The grin was never changing, and Kleoné let out a sigh of exasperation.

She was about to just ignore him and continue to walk when a voice called out to her, "Hey! Sis! Welcome home!"

She turned around to see a slim young man hurrying after her. He had fair skin, sparkling green eyes, and short blonde hair.

He was dressed in a slate blue tunic that looked similar to hers; the only difference was that his sleeves were longer, tucked into the brown armguards that he wore, he also wore black trousers and well-worn brown boots.

"Mykel," She greeted back, a small genuine smile appearing on her face. "How was your day?"

"It was good! Quinn and I were scheduled for cleaning duty today; we're doing the laundry." Mykel explained.

Mikazuki laughed, "Is it safe to leave him alone? I remember that he accidentally dyed the laundry pink one time."

"Weyland is with him," Mykel reassured. He then looked at Kleoné, "Her Majesty would like to meet with you Sis,"

"For what?" She asked, her anxiety spiking. What else could go wrong today? She ran through the past week in her mind; she didn't think she had done anything to warrant a sudden meeting with the Queen.

"Don't look so worried," Mykel immediately said, patting her shoulder reassuringly. "You're amazing, Sis; I'm sure she just wants to praise you."

"I doubt that's it." She muttered before shaking her head, it wouldn't be good to keep her Majesty waiting. "I'll be going then." She walked back the way she came without a word, leaving the two men behind, worry swirling in her mind.

After walking through the maze-like hallways, Kleoné arrived at the grand double doors that led to Queen Inara Dragomirnova-Ace's office; she could hear a raised familiar voice from inside, it was full of frustration.

She hesitated for a moment before knocking. There was a pause before a soft, warm voice called out to allow her entrance. Taking a deep breath, Kleoné pushed the door open to reveal their Queen who was sitting behind her desk, an amused look on her face, and the Citadel's Attendant, a stack of papers messily held in his hands.

The Queen was a young woman, only seventeen. She had smooth, flawless fair skin, wavy rose-gold hair that stopped a few inches past her mid-back, and polished bronze-colored eyes. As usual, she was dressed in a modest white dress with gold-and-red accents, the hem of the dress, brushing against the floor.

Her Attendant, Nox Vasilikov, had sun-kissed skin, thick, wavy black hair, and narrow, rich violet eyes. He was dressed in a long-sleeved double-breasted black coat with a standing collar and two rows of gold buttons on the front and neatly pressed black trousers and polished black dress shoes.

Kleoné gazed at the two of them uncertainly, adjusting the hood over her head, "You called for me, Your Highness?"

Inara nodded a warm smile on her face, "Yes. I've been meaning to meet with you for some time now."

"About what?" Kleoné asked. Were they finally going to kick her out of the Paladins? Did they finally realize that she didn't belong?

Inara must have heard the anxiety in her voice because she exchanged a glance with Nox. "Will you give us a moment?"

"Of course, Your Majesty," Nox bowed to her before leaving the office, a slight scowl appearing on his face when he met her eyes. What was that about? She couldn't remember doing anything to upset Nox. But being summoned by the Queen was enough to upset him sometimes, Nox hated being dismissed.

Inara waited until Nox had closed the door behind him before gesturing for Kleoné to take a seat, which she reluctantly did. "How was the mission? I heard you were injured?" The Queen asked once she was settled.

"The mission went well, and it was only a scratch. I've already been to the infirmary." She said, try to relax.

Inara nodded, looking pleased. "Kleoné, do you enjoy being on the First Unit?"

The brunette blinked at her; it was such an odd and random question. "... I do..." She finally nodded, "I've learned so much from the people in the unit, even though I'm not sure why someone like me was put in it."

"Someone like you?" Inara questioned, looking confused.

"A commoner," Kleoné explained, voice meek. "Everyone else in the unit is nobility."

"That's just chance, Kleoné," Inara reassured her. "Cepheus is new, but you've always worked well with Remy and Idalia. Adriane too before she left for the Clover Kingdom. And I must say, as much as you think they helped you, you also helped them. You've all grown so much this past year."

She didn't agree, but she kept her mouth shut. She didn't think Inara would be happy if she disagreed... again.

When she didn't say anything, Inara continued. "I think you've grown wonderfully as a Paladin after all these years, and as you know, I'm trying to establish permanent units for the Paladins, but it's been hard. We only have two units right now. I think it's time for a third one."

Kleoné's head jerked up at that, " You want me to switch units?" She didn't know how to feel about that. The First Unit was established a year ago, and she'd been with them since the beginning, she didn't know how well she would be working with different Paladins so suddenly. As much as she didn't think she belonged in the First Unit, she didn't want to give it up either.

"I want you to be the Captain of the Third Unit," Inara explained. "I think you're well suited to lead it. Idalia was the one who recommended you, and Mikazuki agreed."

"But I'm a commoner! Surely any Paladin you put in the unit wouldn't listen to me!" She protested.

"You should have more faith in yourself," Inara chided, "There are many Paladins who look up to and admire your strength."

Kleoné doubted that, and as much as she wanted to argue, she recognized the look in her Queen's eyes. Inara had made her decision, and nothing in this world would change her mind. "I'll do the best I can." She finally sighed. "Do you know who will be in my unit?"

"I'm still deciding," She admitted. "I wanted your agreement to be Captain before I decided on the others."

Kleoné nodded numbly. She'd do it until Inara realized the mistake, she had made by letting her have a unit. It wasn't her place to be a Captain, not someone like her who wasn't even wanted by her own family. Who was merely a placeholder in a group of strong mages.

"Is there anything else?" Kleoné asked when she realized Inara was waiting for her to say something.

"That was all. When I have everything finalized, I'll call you back so you can meet the members officially." The Queen said.

The brunette nodded and turned to leave, but Inara stopped her.

"One more thing, Kleoné, I know you don't think you deserve or are capable of being made Captain of your own unit, but you wouldn't have been considered if others didn't believe in you." She said sternly.

"I understand," She said, even though she didn't. She didn't understand how people could believe in her.

Ace Kingdom

Celestial Court

Seirios Town

A young woman with fair skin, wavy bright red hair in a ponytail, and periwinkle-colored eyes made her way through the familiar port town of Seirios, the home she had chosen for herself and her family a few years ago.

She was dressed in a sleeveless black tunic, and over it, she had on a dark purple riding coat that went down to her thighs, the sleeves of the coat rolled up to her elbows. She wore close-fitting dark pants, thick-soled black military boots, and black fingerless gloves. Over her coat, she had on thin black-and-bronze pauldrons.

It had started as a relatively normal day for her; she had woken up just as the sun rose, ate a quick breakfast, and then headed out to do her rounds, patrolling the area around the town to make sure everything was peaceful. Everyone had seemed happy and content, but that's when she felt it: the unmistakable feeling of someone watching her, the hairs on the back of her neck standing up, alerting her to an unknown danger.

She immediately looked around but saw no one that stood out. All she saw were Merchants and Traders, going about their business, fishermen setting sail in their boats to get their catch of the day.

It was unnerving; to say the least, it had been a long time since someone had been able to hide from her, and she didn't like it. Not one bit. She did another loop of the town, looking for anything that stood out but still came up with nothing at all, whoever it was, they were good with hiding their mana and staying out of sight.

"What's with you?" A gruff voice asked, pulling her out of her thoughts, her head jerked up in surprise to meet the warm brown eyes of Lord Xavier Kimbell, the Mayor of Seirios Town. He was a big, burly man in his late sixties, with a thick graying beard covering half his face, and his skin was a warm shade of brown. He was dressed simply in a well-fitting brown tunic and dark brown pants. "You're never distracted during patrol Charis."

"Something has me uneasy," She admitted, looking down at the ground, an ashamed blush on her face. Usually, she'd never admit her unease to anyone, but she felt comfortable around Xavier; he was the reason she even had a chance to become a soldier in the Celestial Courts, he had given her a chance to turn her life around when no one else did even though she still didn't understand why. She had tried to steal from him and in return he had helped her, giving her a job and putting in a good word to the commanding officer at the military base in Seirios. She just couldn't understand him. While other people had seen a street rat that no one wanted, he had seen potential in her.

"Hmmm," The man looked around thoughtfully, his own gaze sharper as he looked around them. "Maybe everyone's just excited." He finally said, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder, causing her to jump, she wasn't used to people who weren't her family touching her.

"What for?" She asked. Was there a festival happening tonight? She didn't think so; she always made sure to keep track of celebration days since they were always a hundred times more troublesome. Someone would always get drunk and start a fight, and as a soldier of the Ace Kingdom, it would be her responsibility to settle them down. She never got to relax on those nights, no matter how much she wanted to.

"Applications for the Paladins are being accepted starting today, it always causes a stir the first few weeks, at least until most of them are rejected before even getting a chance to do the exams. I'm surprised you haven't noticed that your fellow knights are skipping with excitement."

"Well... I don't live in the barracks, so no one mentioned it to me." Charis admitted. Even though she was a soldier stationed in Seirios Town, most of her fellow soldiers kept their distance and rarely talked to her, the ones she would consider friends she hadn't seen recently. Maybe they were purposefully avoiding her, it must be hard to be friends with someone who only joined the military for money.

"I see," Xavier said, scratching his chin through his beard. "Are you going to send an application? You've been in the military for four years, so you qualify."

She shook her head, she qualified but... "I need a letter of recommendation from a respected source. No one in their right mind would write one for me."

Xavier smiled at her, "Do you want to try? I can write you a letter of recommendation."

She gaped at him, stunned before shaking her head. He had already done so much for her, even after knowing her history. His name would be tarnished if he sent a letter and she didn't get in, she couldn't do that to him.

"Don't say no right away," He laughed, "Think about it. I think you'd make a good Paladin Charis, and if anything, the pay would be better if you made it into their ranks."

"Joining for money would be looked down upon." She huffed, he had to realize that.

He hummed thoughtfully, "Yes if it were for just yourself and greed, I'd agree. But you've never tried to attain money for yourself; you've always looked for ways to get more money for your family so that they can survive." He smiled down at her, "Some may look down on it, but if it's for your family, I think it's fine. Think about it and let me know." He said before leaving her to her thoughts.

She watched him leave, a conflicted look on her face before she saw a shadow out of the corner of her eyes, when she turned to face it, the shadow disappeared behind a building. Got you. She thought, giving chase without a second thought, her feet pressing hard against the stone tile as she chased her target.

Now that she'd seen them, it didn't take much effort for her to catch up to the shadow and slam them into the side of a building, her arm pressed against the shadow's throat to keep them in place. She's about to demand why they were following her when she realizes that she recognizes them, her blood turning to ice as a cold smile formed on their face.

"Looks like you've been doing well for yourself, Charis," The deep voice brings back unpleasant memories, the scarred face one she had constantly seen in nightmares. "Who would have ever thought you'd join the military?"

"It's an honest living," She shot back, her arm pressing tighter against the shadow's- the man's throat, causing him to splutter.

He laughed, "What you were doing before wasn't honest?"

Her mind immediately flashed back to dirty back alleys and of men larger than her being pummeled, their blood staining already dirty walls red. Another memory flashed before her eyes: of her brother being dangled off the ground by the collar of his shirt, terror in his eyes as he waited for a thickly scarred fist to smash into his face.

The man, sensing her distraction moved, trying to shove her off and turn the tables, but she quickly snapped out of it, slamming him back into the wall, a dagger of pure energy forming in her hands.

"That wasn't honest work." She growled, pressing the tip of her dagger into the man's neck. "What do you want, Rex?"

"Boss wants you back," He breathed, fear in his eyes when she stabbed the tip of the dagger deeper against the sensitive skin on his neck, drawing a steady stream of blood.

That wasn't happening. Charis glared up at him, meeting his dark eyes. "You can tell the Boss that he lost me when he tried to kill my brother." She was very tempted to end his life right then and there, but she knew if she did, the honest life her family had been trying to build for the past few years would disappear in the blink of an eye. He wasn't worth it.

"I'll give you one warning: leave now and forget you found me." With that, she punched him in the temple, hard and fast, knocking him out cold before he could react.

She let him fall roughly to the ground before looking around, thankful that no one seemed to have noticed the altercation, but she was spooked; if the Boss was looking for her, she wouldn't be able to hide for long, and her family wouldn't be safe.

As she wondered what to do, her mind went back to what Xavier said, that the Applications for the Paladins had opened up; if she was accepted into the Paladins, her family could be a bit safer. No one outside of the Paladins knew exactly where the Citadel was, and families weren't invited to move to the Citadel, but she had heard rumors of a small town near where the Citadel was rumored to be located; maybe she could move her family there if she was accepted in, keeping them within reach. Either way, her family could no longer stay in Seirios, it was no longer safe.

When Rex started to stir, she looked down at him and quickly delivered a kick to his jaw, knocking him back out before sighing. She guessed she was taking up Xavier's offer to write her a letter after all.

Ace Kingdom

Royal Court

Lance Town

"Take that!" A young man with rich olive skin, broad shoulders, and intense orange eyes swung a wooden sword down onto the head of his opponent, he thought it was a sure hit, but instead, he found his sword blocked by another practice sword.

They were dressed similarly in well-worn brown tunics and gray pants. The only difference was that his opponent had black hair and clear blue eyes.

"Nice try, Jonas," the black-haired mage grinned as he pushed Jonas back before striking out at him, the tip of the wooden sword skimming against his chest. "You'll have to do better if you want to join the Paladins!"

"I know that!" Jonas snapped back, striking out at the black-haired warrior again, "I didn't pass last year, but I will this year, just wait, Silas."

Silas laughed, blocking his next strike, but Jonas caught him by surprise when he quickly pushed Silas' blade to the side and thrust forward, the wooden blade jabbing into Silas's chest. There was a beat of silence before Silas grinned at Jonas. After a beat, Jonas smiled back, a relieved look on his face.

"Your win." Silas nodded, lowering the practice sword, while Jonas mimicked his actions. "You've won six times out of ten, I think it's safe to say that you're all set for the Paladin Exams in a few months."

Jonas' brows furrowed, "I don't know. I thought I was ready last year, but I didn't make it past the tests."

"A lot of people didn't make it last year," Silas shrugged, tapping the wood sword against a broad shoulder. "Only seven made it into the Paladins last year right?"

Jonas nodded mutely; he had doubted his strength when he hadn't made it, he had been so confident, he was one of the strongest mages in their platoon. Never in a million years had he thought he wouldn't make it.

"Maybe they're just being too choosey?" Silas asked after a moment. "Their numbers are only a bit better than they've been in the past years, but still low, you'd think they'd want more mages in the Paladins."

"... I think it's good that they're choosing quality over quantity," Jonas finally spoke up. "Queen Inara had to purge a good number of corrupt Paladins when she became Queen. Numbers don't mean anything if the members of the Paladins aren't honest and just."

"You weren't honest and just?" Silas raised a brow, frowning at the perceived slight he saw for his friend.

"I'd like to think I am," Jonas said, he had grown up with the values of honor, loyalty, and truth. He had made those words his motto. "I didn't make it into the Paladins last year because I lost my first match."

"He was an impressive mage. He was one of the ones to make it into the Paladins." Silas nodded.

"I'll make it this year," Jonas said, both to Silas and himself, as he made his way to the bench where they left their bags. "Are you going to participate in the Exams this year?"

Silas shook his head, "No. I'm going to stay here and help Sofia and your dad with the store." He paused. "And I'm not like you. I like being a simple soldier in the Royal Court. I have a good life and soon, I'm going to be married to the woman I love." He smiled softly at Jonas.

The two packed their things up in silence until Silas spoke up again, his voice softer, a tinge of sadness in his voice, "I wish Tomas was here too,"

Jonas nodded silently, he couldn't agree more, it hurt that his older brother wouldn't be around for Sofia's big day.

Tomas Bastille had been his inspiration, a great, strong mage who was in service to the Ace Military. Tomas had also dreamed of joining the Paladins, but he had died when he was nineteen, the year he would have qualified to apply. He died trying to break up a drunken brawl in a tavern. One lucky hit was all it took; all of Tomas' dreams and potential were gone in a flash. It had been unfair and left the family devasted.

"He would have been the life of the party," Jonas said softly, shouldering his pack. "If I make it to the Paladins... take care of Sofia and Dad."

Part of him felt guilty that he was trying for the Paladins again, his family had already lost one son, and they could lose another if he got accepted his time around, the missions would be more dangerous and he wouldn't be able to see them as often as he would like. He was also feeling guilty about leaving Silas to take care of his family; it should be his job.

"You don't even have to ask," Silas smiled at him. "I'll watch over them, you just worry about making them proud."

"I will."

Ace Kingdom

Royal Court

The Citadel

Kleoné was balanced on one of the parapets of the outer Citadel walls, staring up at the moon, deep in thought. Captain of the Third Unit... it still seemed unreal to her; she never thought that Inara would offer her the position, there were so many other people more qualified than her, many nobles came to mind, so she didn't understand why Inara had chosen her...

Was she worthy of the position? Both Queen Inara and Mikazuki seemed to think so. But they both always had a strangely high opinion of her. Her brothers, too, when she mentioned the news to them, were both excited and encouraging, saying that she'd do great in the position.

She was still pondering her situation when she heard familiar, light footsteps heading in her direction. Silently, she glanced up and saw a familiar head of bright orange curls and, a rich crimson coat floating on the warm night breeze. "Idalia." She greeted. "Is everything at home settled."

Her Captain, or was it her former Captain? Nodded. "Everything is settled, Illyea is heading to the Clover Kingdom in a few weeks."

Kleoné blinked, "Kiran is okay with that?"

"Kiran isn't, but there's nothing she can do about it." Idalia shrugged. "Man, I'm jealous. I wish I could go to the Clover Kingdom too. Illyea's heading there and both Adriane and Valance are there."

Kleoné frowned at that... Adriane and Valance... Idalia's close friends since childhood. Kleoné knew both Adriane and Idalia had been displeased when Valance had been exiled. Had fought for her to stay in the Ace Kingdom even if they had known it would be useless.

To be truthful, for the longest time, Kleoné had seen herself as a placeholder for Valance in Adriane and Idalia's friendship; both she and Valance were from the Celestial Court, after all, and there had been no reason for the two Noble Ladies to befriend her unless she was a placeholder or replacement friend. She had been convinced and still thought the two of them would throw her away when Valance returned. Maybe it was happening now, but instead of Valance coming back to Ace, the two would leave for Clover.

"It would be a good reason to partner with Valance and Adriane again, wouldn't it? The original trio." Kleoné mused, looking back up at the night sky.

There was a long beat of silence before Idalia smacked her lightly on the back, causing her to lose her balance on the parapet; she would have fallen off the wall if Idalia hadn't reached out and grabbed the back of her cloak.

"What was that for?!" She demanded, turning to look at her friend when she regained her balance.

"Because you're bringing up unneeded worries again. Didn't I tell you before that I'm your friend no matter what? Valance has nothing to do with our friendship." Idalia huffed, she looked annoyed at kleoné's uncertainties.

"You're trying to get rid of me." She accused.

"Recommending you for Third Unit Captain isn't getting rid of you," Idalia said, looking slightly offended at the notion of getting rid of her. "I recommended you because I believe you can lead. You've grown as much as you can in the First Unit, now you have to grow more by being a Captain on your own while helping the Paladins in your unit grow themselves,"

"I-I don't think I can do it," Kleoné said, looking at the ground. "What do you expect from a commoner? Almost all the Paladins in the existing Units are Nobles. Wouldn't a different noble be a better Captain?"

"No," Idalia said, shocking Kleoné by how confident she sounded. "You've earned the right to be Captain. You're strong and have a good head on your shoulders. You protect the younger and less experienced Paladins without a second thought but still give them chances to learn. The younger Paladins respect you. No one but you should be the next Captain."

"But what will the nobles say?" She asked after a moment.

"Who cares?" Idalia shrugged. "If a noble in the Paladins think they should be Captain just because they're nobles, then they don't belong in the Paladins." She paused, looking thoughtful. "And you won't be alone, if you need help, you can always ask Mikazuki. Or me. We're Captains too after all."

"Don't you want to go to the Clover Kingdom?" She couldn't help but ask.

Idalia smiled softly, "I'd go if they need help, but this is home, I never planned to stay permanently, no matter who's there."

"I won't let you or our Queen down," Kleoné promised. She just hoped that she could keep the promise; she had a bad history of breaking promises without meaning to.

Idalia laughed, "I know you won't." The two sat in comfortable silence until Idalia decided to break it, completely taking Kleoné by surprise with what she said next, "Her Majesty has decided to let Magic Knights from the Clover Kingdom to participate in the Paladin Exams."

"What?!" Kleoné's eyes were stretched wide. "How? Why?!"

"Because the Clover Kingdom is allowing Ace Kingdom mages into their borders, into their squads, Her Majesty thinks it would only be fair if we allowed some to try out for the Paladins, but the qualifications remain the same; they have to have four years of military service and have a letter of recommendation, as well as never have been in prison."

"But won't that cause problems?" Kleoné asked nervously.

"Maybe, but her Majesty won't back down on her decision." Idalia said she didn't look too bothered by the idea, she looked excited, "We just have to hope for the best. Looks like you'll start your Captainship with a bang."

"Good for me," The brunette said blandly, cursing her luck. She just had to hope that nothing too drastic happened.
