Chapter 1
Biana
"So," I said, forcing myself not to fidget as Mom finished braiding my hair, "How do I look?"
Mom smiled warmly and replied," You are the most gorgeous being to ever walk the Earth. "
I smiled back. "Welp, I should get going. I bet Fitz and Keefe are STILL not ready even though all they have to do is put a jerkin on."
Mom laughed. "Boys. Aren't they the worst at getting ready?"
Yeah, no kidding.
But after Mom named some pretty colorful threats to Fitz and Keefe, they got ready in a "record time" of 5 minutes. Seriously. They had SIX hours. SIX! Anyway, after Sophie (who was leaping with us), Keefe, and Fitz and I leaped to Foxfire, I was kind of shocked. I wasn't fully shocked, of course, since I've been to many Foxfire events, but this time they really went overboard. I had no idea how fancy this would be, since this was the first time Foxfire had ever hosted a prom before. Twinkling fairy lights outlined huge stained glass windows, while long glass tables of gooey mallowmelt, flavorful pudding puffs, piping hot cinnacreme, and more delicious foods and drinks shimmered in the rainbow light. Music blared from the speakers, and I recognized the song as one by Mai Song (ew), a famous artist, and Tam and Linh's (horrible) mom.
"Biana! Biana, over here!" I whirled around, spotting Dex, my best friend, and "date" to prom.
I beamed at him. "Hi Dex! They really overworked themselves this year, didn't they?"
"They did," he agreed, turning in a slow circle to take the full grand panorama, "I guess this is what Mr. For- Sorry, Magnate Leto meant when he said that this ball would be one to remember."
"Right." I studied the grand ballroom. Though we'd arrived early, more than half the school was already there.
"Is something supposed to happen or are we all just going to stand here awkwardly?" wondered Keefe.
"I'm pretty sure Magnate Leto's supposed to say something," Fitz noted.
"Well he better say it soon, or I'm going to actually die of boredom," Linh remarked, appearing between Fitz and Keefe.
Oh! Linh was here. That meant…
Yep, I thought, spotting familiar silver bangs right behind her, Tam's here. I tried (and failed) to push down the little fluttery-butterfly thingies in my stomach.
I sighed. Crushes were the WORST.
