Chapter 2

Tam

"Come on Tam!" Lihn exclaimed, grabbing my hand and dragging me right in between Fitz and Keefe, where she had been standing, "Why don't you at least try to get a social life?"

I tugged my bangs over my eyes, a nervous habit I had developed, not unlike Sophie's eyelash-pulling.

"Oh look, Tammy Boy decided to join the party!" Keefe exclaimed.

I didn't respond, because idiots like him didn't deserve my attention.

Keefe opened his mouth to say something else, but Magnate Leto thankfully chose that moment to step up onto the stage. His face filled the giant screen above the stage, and he began to speak.

I tuned most of the speech out, it was just "a chance to let your hair down" blah blah blah, "after the tiring midterms" blah blah blah, "have fun" blah blah blah. I didn't pay attention to that, but I did pay attention to how close Linh and Fitz were standing. Hadn't Linh claimed she had no date to the prom? And Fitz was TWO YEARS older than her. Two years! But there was a chance that my reasoning was wrong, and I didn't want to jump to conclusions.

"Tam! TAM!"

"What?" I snapped, turning around.

"I'm going to be over there, dancing, in case you need me." Linh explained.

"Oh. Dancing with who?"

Don't be Fitz, don't be Fitz, don't b-

"Fitz" Linh said matter-of-factly, sashaying away before I could say anything else.

Well, I hadn't been expecting anything else, had I?

"Hi Tam." said a soprano voice. It was Marella, who looked strange without her hair down. It was up in a braided bun, highlighted with gold and bronze.

"Hello, Marella." I replied

This might not end well. I had a feeling she didn't have a date.

And neither did I.

To make matters even worse, I liked someone else.

"So who's your date?" Marella asked, leaning on the table.

" I don't have one."

"Me neither. I'm too good for them anyways," she said, looking out on the dance floor, where I saw Sophie and Keefe twirl past Dex and Biana.

Wait.

BIana and Dex were together? I mean, I'd heard the rumors, but I just dismissed them, not thinking much about it. But if they liked each other…

Marella kept flirting, and I tried to be polite, but she made it difficult. I did not want to be in this situation.

To my delight, Marella finally left as the music stopped and everyone started clapping. There would be 2 formal dances, the opening dance and the final dance were the first Prom King and Queen would be crowned. What I found odd is that this was a tradition in the human world, and we were trying to bring it into our traditions, despite how much we hated them.

I internally sighed. Elves were weird.
