And here is the start of episode five. Hope you enjoy it.
A God Buys Us Cheeseburgers Part One:
(Jason's Point of View)
The helicopter blades buzzed above our heads. I looked up and saw the aerial transport circling the arch, where smoke emitted from it like a smoky chimney. The police were everywhere, asking civilians a lot of questions. But the more we stood around, the more attention we began to draw. And there I saw the strange, hair-braided man again.
"They're looking at us," Cody clutched my hand. I held him protectively. As I stared around, I saw three strange grey-haired women wearing old lady clothes. One of them cut a string. My heart jumped.
"We can't stay here," Grover said. "We need to find Phoebe,".
"We'll start along the river sidewalks,". Annabeth suggested. I didn't move. "Jason,". I was too fixed to the sight of those three women. "Jason!"
Cody pulled me away. "Come on! We've gotta find Phoebe,". I managed to move and we started to walk away. "Wait. Look over there,". He pointed ahead and we saw the two transit officers from the train talking to a policeman. We ducked behind an ambulance van.
"Oh great," Grover cursed. "They're gonna be looking for us,".
"We need to find Phoebe quickly," I whispered. "Annabeth what do you suggest …".
Annabeth's head was looking back. "Oh no. The man's coming,".
"What man?" Grover asked. I looked over Annabeth's head and saw the same man marching upon us, a sack in his hand, and two other mean guys with him.
Annabeth pulled out her cap and placed it on me. "I turned invisible,". The men halted, glimpsing around. Was it me they were after?
"Have you still got his hand, Cody?" Annabeth asked.
"Yes. What are you …?".
"Get Jason away from here," she hissed. I felt Cody pull me away, and I watched as Annabeth screamed out, "Help! That guy is trying to kidnap me!".
Instantly police officers rushed over and the crowds of people started screaming. She regrouped with us and we from the crime scene as swiftly as possible towards the river. I pulled off Annabeth's cap.
"Guys. What the ?". Grover didn't know.
"That man wanted to kidnap Jason," Annabeth said. "He was there at the museum and he was looking right down on him,". As she spoke, I felt my insides tingle.
"That's not important," I answered back.
"Of course it's important," Cody argued.
"Right now, we need to focus on finding Phoebe," I insisted. "Phoebe!" I cried out.
Grover cried out louder. "Phoebe!".
"Find her Akeda! Find her!" Cody begged our wolf friend. He sniffed around.
"Cody, he won't smell anything that's under the water," Annabeth pointed out.
"If Phoebe climbed out, he'd be able to get a scent,". Akeda barked confirming his intellect and we followed him past some reeds towards the far side of the docks. And there we saw Phoebe climbing over the fence. She saw us. And she was not wet at all. Her clothes and wavy hair were completely dry. And even better, she wasn't pale anymore.
She saw us and waved. "Hi,". We were all speechless. Annabeth was also a little angry. And so, I.
Phoebe didn't have to guess twice why we were looking at her like that. "Look, I'm sorry I shovelled you in the stairwell, Annabeth and for locking the door on all of you,". We marched on her. "Even hearing myself say that sounds really bad, but I just – I knew you'd never agree. And there wasn't enough time …,".
I threw my arms around her, holding her tightly. Her arms squeezed me back. I pulled back. "We're just glad you're safe,".
Grover embraced her tightly. "Don't ever scare me like that again,".
"Can't promise that buddy," she said.
Annabeth hugged her and finally Cody. "So, you're not as dead as we thought you were gonna be,". My sister remarked.
"And you're cured from the Chimera's poison," Cody said gleefully.
Phoebe nodded. "My dad saved me,".
'We know," Annabeth said. "We saw the sprout of water pull you into the river from the air,".
"Tell us what happened," Cody eagerly insisted.
"I was in the river, and then a Nereid appeared to me. And my dad spoke to me,". The way she spoke, it sounded as if Phoebe was no longer resentful of her father: Poseidon. "He said to go to Santa Monica. We're gonna meet him there and he's gonna help us. I found out I could breathe underwater and the Nereid pulled him up the surface,".
"I told you your father cared about you," I smiled.
"He mentioned you," Phoebe's next words made me flinch a little. "I think when we get to Santa Monica, he'll want to talk to you too. When we see him, you can ask him everything you've wanted to know. You could ask him about where you come from and why he blessed you,".
That was exactly what I wanted. All my life I had been desperate for answers and now Poseidon the god who blessed me and gave me my friends and family could do that.
"Uh I'm afraid that's gonna be a bit of a problem," Grover said anxiously. "The police think we crashed our train and then did that …,". He gestured to the high level of damage on the arch.
"You mean the cops are after us?". Phoebe asked, completely missing the point.
"Yep," her Protector remarked.
"Wait. Isn't that gonna make it harder to get tickets to use any means of transport?"
"Yep. Which means we have to walk," Cody complained.
"We better get going before the police sweep this area," Annabeth urged us to move and we did. "Or that man comes back,".
"What man?" Phoebe asked.
"The same guy who spied on us in the museum had two cronies with him. he had a sack ready to capture Jason," she said grimly.
"But who was he?" Cody wondered. "And what could he want with Jason?".
"Guys, we'll worry about that later," I was getting tired of everyone becoming worried all of a sudden. "Right now, we need to worry about getting to Phoebe's father on time. We're so far away from Santa Monica and if we don't get to him, we'll never complete the quest or save her mother,".
"Maybe we should call camp," Cody suggested.
"No," Phoebe said. "This is a bad idea. We can't put the mythical world at risk. Let's at least start walking and then figure everything out from there. We still have food and water and some supplies,".
And with that, we started walking. We made our way towards the roads and began walking out of the city, narrowly avoiding detection.
"I don't think my legs can take it anymore," Cody panted.
"We should rest," Grover walked off the road and we sat behind some large stone dividers. He slumped down and we sat down too. We were quiet for a long moment until the bushes shuffled. We pulled out our besides and … Grrr.
"Tuastos!" Cody ran to his bear cuddling her face. "I'm so happy to see you,".
"Good to see you, girl,". Grover stroked her and so did the rest of us. "I don't suppose she'd be willing to give us a lift,".
"We can't all ride on her," Annabeth reminded him. "And she should take a break. She's travelled too far to find us,".
We slumped down again, our bear protector keeping a firm eye out for any sort of danger.
(Phoebe's Point of View)
As we were resting, I drifted off into deep thought. "What are you thinking Phoebe?" Jason asked.
"I've been thinking, I didn't steal the master bolt. You guys didn't steal the master bolt. Hades does but he couldn't have done it alone,".
"She's right. "Gods are forbidden from stealing each other weapons,". Annabeth pointed out
"So, someone must have done it for him," Jason said.
"So we need to find out why and how deep this goes,". They gave me looks. "What?".
"At first when you discovered you were a demi-god, your head wasn't fully into this," Annabeth said straightly. "But now you seem to be taking this more seriously. Ever since your dad saved me,".
My heart pumped for joy. "I guess I never thought he would do that for me,".
"You just had to wait for a sign and it came," Jason said proudly.
"When we see her father, Jason, what is the first question you're going to ask him?" Cody asked eagerly.
"I …" he hesitated. "I've thought of so many questions that I can't decide. But there is this one I've been so eager to ask. 'Who am I really?'".
"You already know the answer to that," Annabeth said. "You're one of us,".
"No. I mean who were my parents? Where did I come from? And why did he bless me?". He pulled out his sword and looked at the sparkling blade. "What's special about me?".
He was silent for a long while. "Okay, what's up with you?" Annabeth asked.
"What's up with what?" he asked.
"You've been acting weird ever since we left the Arch," she pointed out.
"I'm gonna have to agree with that one," I said. "Are you thinking about that man who wanted to kidnap you?".
"No. I just … I saw the Fates," I froze, my mind jumping back to New York, the day I was expelled from school.
"Were they three old women with wool?" I asked.
"Yes," he nodded. "Back at the Arch, I saw the Three Fates and I saw Atropos cut a piece of thread,".
Cody gulped.
"The Fates weave the life strand of every living thing," Grover explained. "When you see a string cut – ,"
"It means one of us is going to die," Annabeth explained.
"I mean we're all gonna die someday," I tried to ease their nerves.
"No. It means one of us is going to die very soon,". Cody said seriously. "It's an omen".
My heart jumped. I remembered seeing one of the Fates cut a string and it must have forewarned my mother's supposed death at the hands of the Minotaur. Still I buried my fear and held onto my courage. "Three ladies with a ball of yarn won't change what's gonna happen. What we choose to changes what's gonna happen and we can choose to do anything we want,".
"Need some help?". Spooked a voice from behind the dividers. We peered over the rock and saw a hefty man wearing a motorcyclist helmet, standing beside a noisy motorcycle. He had short-cut hair and a bushy beard of yellow and dark eyes that looked so familiar.
"Beg your pardon?" Grover asked.
"I ask if you could use some help,".
We couldn't trust him. "Nope. We're good. Appreciate your asking though. So long," Grover pushed my head down.
"You don't seem so good,". The man was becoming too suspicious.
"We don't want anything from you," Annabeth refused again.
"You sure? Because you guys are so behind schedule,". My heart jumped. He was from our world. We stood up and Cody stroked Tuastos's head to keep her from attacking our new acquaintance. "Summer solstice is just a few days away. And as much as I'd love to see a good war pop up, as your big cousin, I feel like maybe, I wanna give you a hand,".
" 'Cousin' ?" I repeated. But as I saw his dark eyes, they reminded of Clarisse.
"Ares,". Annabeth jinxed.
"You must be Athena's kid. Always got to be the wisest one of the bunch. And you must be Artemis's kid," he pointed at Cody causing Tuastos and Akeda to growl. "The favourite. The only one who got to have animals as pets,". They snarled. "Looks like they need training,".
"What are you even doing out here?" Jason demanded.
"Ooo not very friendly," Ares remarked, not impressed by my friend one bit. "Yes. I know who you are. And to answer your question, I'm doing exactly the same thing as you. Zeus sent all his kids to look out for the master bolt too. I'm quite surprised he hasn't taken a shot at you yet,".
"Leave him alone," I defended him. "Poseidon blessed him so he has every right to be out here on this quest helping us,".
"I can see your father in you. You have his eyes," I blinked at him. "And apparently too big a heart. Listen dummies, there's a diner an hour up the road. I'm hungry. If you want my help, you'll meet me there,".
He drove without so much as an offer to give us a lift. That that we would accept.
"That's my cousin?" I asked. I did not like him. "What kind of family is this?".
"Come on. We need to get to that diner," Annabeth urged.
For the first half-an-hour, Grover, Annabeth and Cody rode Tuastos whilst Jason, Akeda and I walked beside them. Then for the next half, we rode her and I fell asleep against his back which was really soft. And he didn't mind.
We made it to the diner on the side of the road. "You two should hide in the forest," Cody told his companions. "Just in case,".
Akeda pawed at him but he stroked his head. "Don't worry we'll be fine,". We walked inside the diner and I saw my cousin laughing at his phone like a complete mad hatter. Food was on the table but I doubted he had brought it for us.
"Let's just sit down,". I said calmly. After removing our coats, we walked over to him and sat around the circular table. Cody was a little too close to Ares so Jason kept a firm arm around him.
"Come on. I don't bite," Ares said "Boo," but none of them were appeased.
"Nice try but you're not scaring us," Jason answered back. "Your daughter could do better,".
Ares glared at him. "You're lucky we're in a diner. Now listen carefully guys. Your quest is going to fail. Ask me how I know,".
"It's not going to fail,".
Ares scoffed. "I'm afraid it is. For starters,". He turned on his phone and I saw Gabe on the news.
"Again," I cursed.
"Who is that?" Grover asked.
"My step-dad Smelly Gabby," I felt sick just seeing his face again.
'Phoebe was always troubled'. he lied to the news. 'But I never thought she was capable of something like this'. The news continued reporting on the damaged Am-track train and the Arch's disappearance, saying I had something to do with it and now they were asking him if I had 'kidnapped' my mother. Still, he continued to lie. 'Of course, she would. She's
"What?" I cursed.
Ares chuckled. "The FBI is already spreading around your picture like wildfire from New York,".
I should have known it wouldn't stop in New York after seeing the newspapers. 'I – we really loved that car'. Gabe pretended to sob.
"I'm gonna kill him," I snarled.
"Turn it off," Jason said to Ares who immediately did it whilst still keeping eye-contact with me.
"I knew I was gonna like you. But safe to say, the chances of you five idiots and your pets hitchhiking the rest of the way to L.A without getting arrested are slim to none,".
"Why are you sitting here then?" Jason mocked. "Instead of looking for the bolt like you're supposed to?".
"There's no fear in you is there," Ares said. "It doesn't matter. Whether the bolt's retrieved or not, Zeus is going to war with Poseidon,".
What? "No," I refused to believe it. "The Oracle said if we retried the bolt, there wouldn't be a war,".
"Is that she said? Or is that what Chiron said she meant?".
"Don't you mention him," Jason warned.
"You really love that centaur don't you,". Ares seemed to enjoy tormenting him.
"He's my dad. He raised me. And he would never lie to any of us,".
"He would definitely lie to you," Ares was making him angry.
I spoke up before Jason could shout out and cause a scene. "Chiron would never lie to Jason. And he would never send us on a quest
"You're new to the family young one and you don't seem to know reality, touched child," Ares's tone at Jason made him fume through his nostrils. "Let me fill you both in n how we work. See years before I was born, my grandpa Kronos ate my aunts and uncles. Then my dad made him puke them back up then chopped him into a million pieces and chuckled em' into a bottomless pit, so that kind set the tone right out the gate. Olympians fight. We betray. We backstab. We will push anyone down a flight of stairs to get ahead. And that's why I love my family so much. My dad knows he's not getting this bolt back with quests and goose chases. He knows there's a war coming so I think he feels it's just time for a war. Ain't that great?".
(Jason's Point of View)
I would not give Ares the satisfaction. "We're completing this quest. We're stopping this war. And we're doing it because Chiron my dad believes in us. So if you're gonna help us, do it now or don't bother showing your face to us again,".
"You truly believe everything that centaur tells you. Here's the deal. There's an amusement park up the road. I left my shield there. you get me my shield back, and I'll get you to the Underworld by lunch tomorrow with a plan to infiltrate Hades's palace,".
"You left your shield? Like, forgot it on the merry-go-round?" I loved Annabeth giving Ares a taste of his medicine.
"Or any particular reason why you're scared to go there and get it back yourself?" Cody teasing tipped him off.
"The chirping was funny to me for a minute but it is getting old," Ares warned. "So do we have a deal or am I killing all three of you so I can eat in peace?".
"Okay," Phoebe gave in. "We'll do it. We'll do it,".
Ares smiled; proud he was getting his way. "I really do want my shield back. So, I'm gonna keep the satyr and the touched mortal here as collateral so you don't run off,"
"Absolutely not!" Phoebe snapped. She would not leave me or Grover behind with this maniac.
"We won't let you," Cody said, hugging me tightly.
"Then I guess you're not getting my help,".
"No. Jason needs to come," Phoebe begged.
"Why? It's not like he could do any better than the rest of you. You're descended from gods. What's he descended from? The garbage guy? The fancy wrestlers?". Ares continued to gloat but Cody wouldn't have it.
"How dare you," he snapped.
"Don't be provoked Cody," I begged.
"You're just like your daughter Clarisse. Arrogant, narrow-minded and thinking being a god or a demi-god is enough to be a hero. Jason is one of us no matter what you or she or anyone says. Without him, we never would have made it this. He has battled monsters and kept us safe, and without him, we'll never complete our quest and find the bolt. He's brave and selfless and he always puts our safety and wellbeing before anything else. He is nothing like you,".
Ares chuckled, unmoved by Cody's speech. "You truly believe in him. Then let's put it to the test. You stay in his place and he goes off to help the girls,".
"No," I refused to leave Cody behind with this maniac.
"If you guys return without my shield, then I'll kill the pipsqueak here and Grover,".
"You do that Artemis will want revenge," I warned him. "Her son's animal protectors are guarding this café right now," I warned.
"Do I care?" Ares dared. "No, I don't. You will retrieve my shield, Jason. If you both return without it, it'll be on you. Your friends' deaths will be on you,".
"It's okay, Jase," Cody took my hand as I shivered.
"We'll be fine," Grover promised.
"No way. We don't split up again," Phoebe didn't want to.
"It's okay," he promised her. "If he wanted to kill us, we'd be dead by now. Can we just walk them to the door?" he begged.
Ares gave us one final glare. "Make it quick,".
Cody and Grover escorted us to the door. "Don't engage with him, whatever you two do," Annabeth begged. "He'll want to get you riled up, get in your head and you guys can't let him,".
"It's okay. We know what we're doing," Cody promised. "Get that shield and get our lift back. And take Akeda and Tuastos with you,".
"No. They're staying behind to guard this diner. Ares is not going to hurt any of you," I said stubbornly.
"We'll be fine," Grover promised. He grasped Phoebe's arm. "I'll be here when you al get back,". Phoebe hugged him. Then Cody hugged Annabeth and me.
"Be safe," he begged. "At least take Tuastos with you,".
"Okay," I sniffled in his hair.
"Don't worry about me. I'll be fine,". He promised. "I really meant what I said Jason. We could never have made it this far without you,".
His words were so sweet but the weapon I carried said otherwise. "But that's the thing Cody. I'm only special because of the sword my dad left me,".
"You know that's not true," Annabeth said gently. "Poseidon wouldn't have blessed you if it wasn't true either. When we see him, he'll tell you everything you want to know. And whatever Chiron does, he does it to keep you safe,". I was glad she told me that. For a brief second, I began to lose faith in Chiron and I felt ashamed.
The girls and I left through the door, looking back at Grover and Cody who sent us encouraging smiles. We walked back to where Tuastos and Akeda were. "Tuastos, you're coming with us," I said to her. "Akeda, keep an eye on the diner and make sure Ares doesn't leave,".
He barked 'yes'. Police cars were in the distance. We had to get away for Phoebe's sake. We mounted Tuastos's and we charged into the forest away from sight to find the waterpark, get the shield and get the help we needed to reach L.A.
And that's the start of Episode Five. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed writing it. See you all later for the next chapter.
