Hanh's POV
Kenzaki quickly appears behind Ainsley and drags her towards us.
"Follow me," he whispered to us. I glanced over to Soryu and Eisuke to see what they were going to do, but they seemed less phased about Kenzaki's order than Ainsley's altercation. He quickly brought us to a conference room, allowing all of us to follow in before locking the door.
"Mr. Ichinomiya, how would you like me to cover this up?" Kenzaki asked.
"I know a quick way to solve this whole thing," Soryu responded, pulling his gun out.
"Don't do that here! Do it somewhere else, because I don't want to bother covering that up here!" Eisuke responded.
"Don't be ridiculous! Stop scaring the poor girl!" Baba interjected. I glanced over at Ainsley, and she was sitting at the conference table and eating the chicken nuggets.
"I am surprised that you let Kenzaki bring you here," I told her.
"He let me bring my chicken nuggets. I even managed to grab a few extras!"
"Ha, like she is scared!" Mamoru noted. Ainsley just shrugged and went back to eating her chicken nuggets.
"I don't think she will be lasting as a maid in this situation, Mr. Ichinomiya," Kenzaki said, bringing everyone's attention back to the issue at hand.
"Listen we cannot kill her," Ota finally interjected. Looking back and forth between everyone and Ainsley, and having this fondness for my idiot of a friend, I said, "Honestly, the mistake was assuming she can work as a maid here. She doesn't have the personality for it. If you want her to make money, she would do better in another position, maybe bartending. She knows how."
The men looked at each other slowly, and after what seemed like forever, Baba said, "I like it! The bar here is more low stakes, so we would have less to worry about. And unfortunately, most of the guests here are some that we are worrying about!"
Eisuke thought about it for a second, before agreeing, "Well, let's try it, and it might turn out for the better, because bartending brings in her money anyways."
"Ha, you heard that, Hanh? I might be paying back my debt faster than you anyways!" Ainsley laughed. I looked at her with my eyes wide open. I cannot believe that a detective, and a friend that cared about my well-being just blew my cover about it. I quickly glanced at Soryu to see if he, especially compared to the rest, had caught on to Ainsley's slip up, but his face betrayed no emotions. I was too afraid to let out a sigh.
"Alright, now that's its been agreed upon. I think it would be best to give both the girls off for today, unless Ms. Kira would like to resume after a longer break. I do think it is better for Ms. Ainsley to start back tomorrow, and I will personally show her to her new location and job," Kenzaki said.
"Don't worry about it, Kenzaki, I can take care of it tomorrow. You go ahead and focus on the cleanup. Thanks again, Kenzaki," Baba said.
Kenzaki bowed before leaving the room.
"Thanks guys, I've got to admit, the whole maid thing isn't my cup of tea, but bartending? Now, that's more like it."
"You threw one of the maids in a trash bin," Eisuke reiterated.
"And I would have done it again. What's your point?"
"Might I suggest my solution again," Soryu said to Eisuke.
"No!" Baba yelled. "Let's all just spend the rest of the day cooling off, and then we can regroup this later!" Baba continued. I think I saw Soryu roll his eyes, but the rest of the guys agreed, and we slowly made our way back to their penthouse suite. Ainsley had actually followed Baba into his suite, and I was left hoping that she wasn't doing another thing to piss everyone off or screw us up.
While I was thinking to myself, worrying about Ainsley and Baba, I also followed Soryu into his suite.
"You can use that bedroom, the same one you had last night for now on. I have another bedroom that I can use. Feel free to use the same bathroom too," he stated.
"Thank you," I responded. It was barely 2 o'clock at this point, and I wasn't sure if he had wanted me to get back to the maid job.
"Hey, you don't have a phone on you right? Use this one." He tossed me an up to date smartphone. "The code is 0217. The only number saved on it is mine. I will be using it to communicate to you."
"Thank you. I will make sure to use it only to communicate with you, sir."
"Feel free to use it for whatever you want."
"Thank you," I said finally, not hiding my own surprise. "And, do you want me to get back to work?" I asked too, not wanting to risk it if he wanted me to do something else."
"No, you can use the time to set up that phone. Unless you want to, I'll let you decide how fast you want to pay back your debt."
I blinked, and I guess I should say that was nicer than I had originally expected. I honestly did not want to go back to deal with the potential questions, so I sat down in the chair by the window. I pulled out the phone, and it was very basic. He wasn't lying that the only saved number was his. As a mini act of rebellion, I changed his contact name to "Nincompoop". I smiled, a little satisfied that I had some control over the situation. But that was all I was willing to do. I didn't want to download any social media or log into anything, since it looks like my own lie about my name wasn't blown, and I don't feel like putting those I loved at home in danger. I didn't know if he was one to get angry about lying about my name. The worst part about it was all my bank accounts, since I had lost my wallet and everything in the rush of things, but I am hoping that rumors about the Japanese not stealing most of the time are correct. I checked out the other apps the phone made, all the basics like a map, the weather, a calendar, a notes app, etc, so I would be somewhat safe if I were to get lost. The rest of the day went by agonizingly slow since Soryu really had left me on my own, and I didn't want to go back to the maid job, so I just took a nap.
The next day came around, and they did let me go with Ainsley a little before my "shift" to see her get situated with the new bartending position. Ainsley took to the job well, which wasn't a surprise to me, since she did it while she was in college back then.
"Wow, you're not bad at all," Baba said after letting her get used to the area and testing her.
"Of course, I am not an idiot," Ainsley responded, only resulting in a scoff from Mamoru and a snicker from Eisuke.
"I think this might have been a better idea, now," Ota chimed in.
"We'll see if it turns out right," Soryu responded, more indifferent than ever before turning to me, "You still have some time if you want to talk to your friend before you start with the other staff today." I was taken back, why was he more considerate today?
'Oh, thank you," I said before making my way towards Ainsley. At this point Baba and the other guys were on the other side of the bar, so they wouldn't be able to hear us if they wanted to.
"You know, I really should thank you for suggesting the bartending thing. I think I would have died as a maid," Ainsley said to me as I got to the bar.
"And I am currently dying right now. Like honestly, I keep pinching myself, praying that this is a dream or some elaborate prank from you."
"Anyways, did you learn anything useful from Soryu?"
"Oh, so now you're in detective mode?"
"No, just curious. I am your friend, and I do care about you. And I heard the man hates women, so I was just wondering how you were handling it. All Baba and I did yesterday after that harpy maid annoyed me, was him kinda warning me about how dangerous the whole thing was, and how I was too pretty to be killed just yet. Some questions about myself, almost like it was speed dating."
"Well, I am happy that detective you was happy, while I was freaking out if Soryu picked up on you calling me Hanh, instead of my fake name Kira."
"Oh yeah, oops."
"Don't oops me! I love my family, and I do not want to drag them into this mess! And I don't know how I am going to deal with this 20 million debt! And before you say something like sell my body! If this man hates women, how the hell would I manage that!"
"LIsten, I have an idea. We can always just run away. Japan is a small country, and we aren't even citizens. And running away from a country is in your Vietnamese blood. And rebelling against a country is in my blood."
"You're going to rebel against Japan?"
"No, I am rebelling against the underground world that is like a country that your buyer technically plays an important role in."
"And was that part of your whole mission?"
"Technically, Hanh, I am not even undercover right now." I blinked and gave her a good 5 seconds.
"What do you mean…"
"Technically, I am currently on unpaid probation." She rescinded, slowly giving me a
". . . why?"
"I may or may not have poured hot soup on my supervisor, because he may or may not have said something I didn't like." I stared straight at her, not breaking eye contact. I am now just losing hope on everything.
"So you're saying that we are just screwed right now?" I wanted to clarify.
"Maybe."
