Chapter 3

Maura was surprisingly excited to spend the day with Luna, even if it was while they both worked in her office. She loved the girl's curiosity about everything and it felt like maybe there was a chance of a friendship between her and Jane. At least someone who could stand her company for a little bit of time. Just some company would be nice. She had spent too many years on her own. When Maura had returned home the night before she had gone through her books to see if there was any more that would be suitable for Luna to read through and thankfully she found a couple. Those books were now positioned neatly on the table ready for Luna.

At 8:30am the elevator doors slid open and Jane and Luna walked out, their animated conversation instantly getting rid of the silence of the morgue floor. Maura couldn't help the smile that graced her lips as the mother and daughter entered her office.

"Cool, look at these books, Ma!" Luna called happily as she caught sight of the textbooks on the table.

"That means good morning in English." Jane smiled lovingly at her daughter as she stood in the doorway.

"Morning Dr. Isles!" Luna plopped down onto the sofa and grabbed the top book and started flicking through it.

"Good morning." Maura couldn't help but laugh at the girl's carefree attitude.

"She has some schoolwork in her bag to do. Hopefully I'll come and get her for lunch so you get a bit of peace and quiet but she does have a sandwich if I get stuck working. Thank you again for this." Jane reached out a hand and placed it briefly on the doctor's arm. Instantly a warmth spread through Maura's body and she was unsure of where it had come from. "I'll see you in a couple of hours, okay?" Jane leaned down and kissed the top of her daughter's head but Luna was already engrossed in the book so just gave a mumble as a reply. "I feel the love." Jane looked at Maura and gave a laugh before she turned and left the office. The blonde absently ran a hand over her forearm when Jane had touched her before she made her way back to her desk to start her work, her thoughts occasionally drifting to the detective.

"Hey," Jane greeted Korsak and Frost who were already at their desks ready to start the day. She plopped down into her chair much like Luna had onto Maura's sofa and ran a hand through her hair.

"How's Luna this morning?" Korsak asked as he shuffled some papers in front of him.

"She is very excited to be spending the day in the morgue. Some days I wonder if she is really my daughter," Jane commented with a smirk as she switched her computer on before leaning back in her chair as she waited for it to turn on.

"The morgue?" Frost questioned and leaned to the side to look around his monitor at Jane. It was not a secret that he was not a fan of the morgue, not with all the dead bodies lying around.

"Yep. She's spending the day in Dr. Isles' office. She offered." The brunette gave a small shrug at the questioning expressions on both men's faces.

"Good luck, Luna." Frost pulled a face at the thought of spending the whole day in the morgue.

"Good luck, Dr. Isles," Jane commented and the three of them laughed. Luna was a firecracker just like her mother. The opposite personality to Maura Isles.

"Can you help me with this?" Luna leaned over Maura's desk and held out a sheet of paper with some math work on it.

"Sure." Maura pulled her thoughts from her own work and took the piece of paper. Luna leaned the top half of her body on the desk and rested her chin in her hands.

"Do you spend most of the day in here?" Luna asked and blew a curl out of her eyes as she studied the doctor.

"Not always." Maura shook her head. "Sometimes I'm in the lab, sometimes I go out in the field."

"With Ma, Uncle Frost and Grandpa Korsak?"

"Yes, with them, sometimes other detectives too." Maura gave a smile and tilted her head slightly at the names. She hadn't realised before just how close the detectives were.

"Cool." Luna grinned and pushed herself off of the desk and began to walk around the office, trailing her fingers over different things, her math work completely forgotten.

"Do you want to get out for a walk?" Maura asked, sensing the girl had some energy she needed to burn off.

"Can we?" Luna's eyes lit up and she spun back around to face the desk.

"We could both do with a little break from our work." Maura stood and reached for her jacket draped over the back of her chair before she indicated for Luna to grab her jacket as well. She followed the mini Rizzoli with a smile on her face as she watched the girl bound to the elevator and jab the button a few times. Just being in Luna's company created a calming atmosphere for Maura and she couldn't help but wonder what it was about the girl and her mother.

—-

Luna settled back into her school work after they had taken a short walk around the park. Maura was amazed at how much Luna had talked the whole way and had bounced from rock to rock as they passed by the pond. The girl seemed to have endless energy, much like her mother.

Maura had just finished a phone call when there was a knock at her office door and she looked up to see an officer she didn't know.

"Uncle Frankie!" Luna called in delight as she caught sight of her uncle.

"Hey, squirt, your mum told me you were down here." Frankie stepped into the office and smiled at his niece. "Hi, I'm Frankie, Jane's brother." He introduced himself to Maura and she noticed the resemblance between the three Rizzolis.

"Nice to meet you, Frankie." Maura smiled and shook his hand.

"I didn't mean to interrupt. I just thought I'd bring Luna down a treat," he apologised as he held up a bag.

"A treat?" Luna jumped up from the sofa and walked over to her uncle.

"Don't tell your Ma." Frankie held out the bag to Luna who excitedly took it. "There's one in there for you too, Dr. Isles."

"Thanks, Uncle Frankie." Luna grinned as she pulled out a cannoli and instantly bit into it, causing the filling to squirt out the other end. Frankie let out a yell and caught it before it hit the floor. "Oops." Luna smiled sheepishly.

"That was a quick reflect," Maura commented, surprised at the speed Frankie caught it and at how quick Luna was able to create a mess.

"We all learnt that quickly once someone started walking." Frankie raised an eyebrow at his niece who just gave him a grin and shoved the rest of the cannoli into her mouth. "Just like your mother." Luna handed him a napkin from the bag to wipe his hands. "I've got to get back to work now. I'll see you later, squirt." He ruffled his niece's hair before he turned to leave. As an uncle it was his job to sneak her treats without her mother knowing every now and then.

"Bye," Luna called and held the bag out with the remaining cannoli to Maura. "Here's yours."

"Thank you." Maura took the bag and placed it down on her desk. She had never had a cannoli before and after watching Luna eat hers she was a bit apprehensive to try one.

Jane gave a groan and ran a hand over her face. This case was turning out tougher than they thought. Her head felt like it was spinning from trying to tie everything together.

"Take a break," Korsak told her, "go have lunch with Luna while she's here. We're not going to magically solve this case in the next twenty minutes." Jane looked at him between her hands and then smiled her thanks before she took off towards the elevator. Korsak was right, it wasn't often she got to have lunch with her daughter during the week.

When she reached the morgue she was greeted by the sound of laughter coming from the ME's office, an unusual sound for this floor.

"What's so funny in here?" Jane asked as she opened the door to the office to the sound of Maura's laughter while Luna stood in the middle of the room.

"Nothing." Luna straightened up and grinned mischievously at her mother.

"Yeah, right." Jane matched her daughter's grin and rested her hands on her belt. "You hungry? I've got some time for lunch."

"Sure. Are we going to the cafe?"

"Yeah, we'll grab something there." Jane reached a hand out and brushed some hair from Luna's face before the girl turned back to Maura.

"Are you coming?"

"Let's give Maura some peace before you come back again."

"I haven't been any trouble," Luna protested and tilted her head back to pout up at her mother. Jane raised an eyebrow before she turned to look at the blonde.

"You're welcome to join us but you're also welcome to some peace from us for half an hour," Jane offered and found that part of her was hoping that her offer would be accepted. She barely knew the ME but had found herself wanting to know more about the blonde.

"I can join you for some lunch." Maura smiled and stood up to join them.

Ten minutes later, the three of them were sitting at a table in the Division One cafe while they waited for their food. Luna was talking animatedly about what she had read in the books Maura had lent her while the two adults listened. Maura found herself not so much listening and more watching. Jane had her arm over the back of Luna's chair and was watching her with a slight frown and look of wonder as her daughter talked non stop. As Luna talked she shifted back and forth in her chair, leaning into her mother, sitting up straight, bouncing a little until something else caught her attention and she called out to Frost and Korsak.

"Hey Luna." Korsak smiled down at the girl and Frost held his fist out for a fist bump. "I hear you're spending the day with Dr. Isles."

"She's so cool!" Luna blurted and Maura blushed at the compliment. No one had ever thought she was cool before. "She has all these awesome books about science and bodies and she works with dead people."

"Uh, we need to talk about what is cool," Frost joked with her. "We'll play basketball soon," he promised which earned another grin from the mini Rizzoli.

"If she gets too much I'm sure we can find some jobs for her to do upstairs." Korsak turned to Maura. He knew the Rizzoli energy well and it wouldn't have been the first time they had found something to entertain Luna while they worked. "We already deal with one Rizzoli, what's one more."

"Gee, thanks guys." Jane rolled her eyes at them before they said goodbye to Luna and headed back upstairs. Before Luna could start her dialogue on the book again their lunch arrived and she began to eat. A comfortable silence settled over them as they ate and Maura found herself glancing up at Jane every few seconds. She couldn't explain the pull she felt towards the detective. Was it because she was the first person to show kindness in a long time?

"I need to get back upstairs, kiddo." Jane ran a hand through her daughter's hand once they had finished eating. "Gotta crack this case." Luna nodded in understanding and the three of them got up and walked towards the elevator together. Jane pressed the up button while Luna pressed the down button. "I'll see you later, love you, baby."

"Love you, Ma." Luna kissed her mother's cheek before she stepped onto the elevator with Maura. Jane smiled fondly at the two of them before she stepped onto her own elevator back to work.
