"We are taking a break from long viewings," Gojira declared after taking a short break from the trailer. "This viewing will hardly be two minutes long."
"Okay," Jayce shrugged. "Fine by me."
"I have no problem with that." Viktor said.
"What can you tell us about this viewing?" Mel asked.
"It's about a dog," the host replied and gestured to Bolt who sat next to Penny and Mittens with Rhino. "That dog."
"It's not like the TV show is it?" Penny asked with a frown. She didn't really like thinking of Bolt doing stuff that the studio made him do.
"Oh no, I assure you young Penny, this is just Bolt in the future with your ranch." Gojira replied in a assuring tone.
"Boring," Snotlout declared in exasperation. Gojira turned his head and growled at him, getting him to squeal and hide behind his seat. Gojira nodded his head and turned back to the screen, willing it to activate while dimming the lights.
The first thing the Audience sees is a flock of sheep near a ranch and Bolt, a white Swiss Shepard dog walking up a hill in the background.
Isha, Silent Sven and a few Viking children cooed at the sight of the sheep on the screen.
Bolt blinked, partially getting reminded of seeing another dog that looked like him a while back.
A lamb notices Bolt walking up the hill. "Look, Moma, where is Bolt goin'?" she asked her mother.
"i think maybe he smell somethin'," replied the sheep.
"Is it a monster?" the lamb asked in a timid tone.
"Did the sheep just talk?"
"Aye, I believe they did."
"Well, now I've seen everything."
The screen then shows Bolt walking to the border of the ranch and he stops just a few feet from the bushes. "You, in the dark," he spoke to the shadows.
"And the dog's talking."
"Is it talking to us?"
"No, you muttonhead! He's talking to someone on the wall!"
"Oh, that makes sense."
"Doggy!" B.O.B. and Bucket exclaimed.
"I know you're in there," Bolt said sternly when it looked and sounded like no one was there. "All of you." he added. "Why are you here?"
Then the Audience sees a pair of eyes glowing in the shadows. They didn't look feline, so they were either coyotes or wolves. "We're hungry,"replied the wolf in a raspy, almost demonic, ominous and sinister voice.
Jack, Pitch and the Guardians instantly knew who and what was in the darkness of the screen. Most of the others however, didn't and were intimidated. The Vikings being a prime example.
"Odin's ghost that voice sounded scary."
"Is it a monster?"
"Or a dragon?"
"I assure you," Gojira said to the Vikings. "There is no dragon in this time period." He glanced to Daenerys, knowing that she would know otherwise.
"Well, that's a relief."
"Man, I wish I was born in that time period or whatever the talking dragon said."
"To be born in a world with no dragons."
"Sounds too good to be true."
"Sounds like paradise."
The Targaryens looked at the Vikings like they just sprouted three heads that speak in different languages. How could these people think a world without dragons was a paradise.
Hiccup shook his head. This just solidified his belief that he needed to leave Berk and the Archipelago all together with the Targaryens and their dragons.
Penny did grow a bit worried for her dog, future counterpart or not. Mittens and Rhino were also worried for their canine friend.
"Sorry to hear that." Bolt replied stoically, not intimidated by the voice he heard. "But there's no food for you here."
"We've come for a sheep," the wolf said next.
"Every one of those sheep down there belong to my person." Bolt replied. "Which means they're protected by me."
The Wolf was silent for a moment before replying, "There are many of us, and only one of you."
Bolt remained stoic as the screen focused on his white furry face. "How many?" he asked simply.
"Fifteen," the Wolf replied.
Bolt sniffed the air three times, his nose twitched slightly at the action. He narrows his brown eyes slightly. "Hmm. . . Less." he said.
"Ha, you can't fool the nose," Mittens remarked to relieve the tension.
Bolt shook his head. "Well, there are some exceptions." he admitted.
". . . Ten." the Wolf admitted.
Bolt shrugs in response. "Maybe."
"There's enough of us," the wolf snarled, his snarl is echoed by the other wolves that were hidden in the shadows. "We could kill you."
"Don't even think about it," Penny said with a protective glare.
"You could," Bolt said, not at all bothered or intimidated. "But it'll cost you. At least one. I promise you that." he said sternly. "Would you sacrifice one of your own to fill your bellies? If so, might as well just pick that one wolf and eat them now."
The wolves all snarled. There was no greater insult to a pack than the suggestion of eating one of their own. The pack was their family. Bolt's stoic expression didn't change one bit.
Even if they weren't animal experts, or had the knowledge as the modern people do about animals, the Vikings (Good and bad) understood how strong a wolf pack shared among each other and how Bolt's suggestion was one of the highest insults.
"We're faster than you," the wolf said after a moment.
"Probably," Bolt said indifferently.
"We'll split up, then." the wolf said, seemingly desperate to intimidate the Shepard dog. "You can't defend the whole herd from two attacks."
"You may be faster than me," Bolt admitted, still holding his stoic expression. "But not while dragging a dead sheep. You won't make it to the trees before I catch you."
Bolt narrows his eyes, ears flattening slightly at the wolf's eyes in the darkness. "I'll make a lot of noise too," he added. "Wake up my person and she'll grab her rifle. And there's none of you going to be faster than that."
"Ha, if only we could say this to dragons," Stoick chuckled bitterly. "Would have saved us a lot of trouble."
Hiccup, Daemon, Laena, Baela and Rheana gave Stoick some deadpan expressions as did Daenerys.
The wolf stares at Bolt before speaking again. ". . . We're hungry." He now no longer sounds sinister or demonic to the Audience. He sounded like he was begging now, desperate for a meal.
Bolt's expression softens slightly in response. "I am sorry. Honest." he said truthfully. And he was. These animals were just desperate for food to live. But he had a duty to do. "But there is no food for you here." he said and then his face hardened and he spoke firmly. "Now, I'm ready to start barking." His warm breath mixes with the cool night air around his nostrils. "So, either leave. . . or do what you got to do."
"Translation: I'm ready to die, are you?" Daemon asked, tilting his head.
"Just leave," Penny whispered. "Because I know myself well enough. If any of you hurt or kill Bolt, starving is going to be the least of your problems." And that was true, Bolt, Mittens and Rhino knew that as did Penny's mother. Penny didn't enjoy killing animals, but they knew that she wouldn't hesitate to do what needed to be done to avenge Bolt should he be killed by predators.
Growling in frustration, the wolf's eyes stared at Bolt for a long moment before, slowly but surely, they stopped growling and began to move back until they disappeared into the shadows and darkness of the woods. And based on the leaves moving around the space the wolf was, the rest of the pack were leaving as well.
Nodding his head, Bolt turns away and begins walking back down the hill. The lamb from before runs up to him. "Bolt! Was it a monster in the woods?" she asked timidly.
"No monsters," Bolt replied in a reassuring tone as he lays down on the grass, he looks out to the forest and the Audience see sympathy flashing in his brown eyes. "Just some poor critters." he said. "Go to sleep now."
The lamb looks ahead to the trees before returning to her herd.
"It's nice that he was sympathetic to the wolves or coyotes," Hiro said. "And it was nice to know their perspective in this scene too."
Karmi nods her head. "Yeah, it was."
"They weren't savage beasts, just animals that wanted something to eat," Hiccup said. "Bolt knew that, but he was bound by his duty as a sheep dog to protect the herd." He turns to Penny. "You got a loyal dog, Penny."
"Yeah, he's one of the best." Penny said, petting Bolt on the head. "My best friend, my hero."
Bolt smiles up at her in response.
Honestly, I just can't get enough of this comic.
And Bolt is an underrated dog, so I'm glad I picked him for this. And I know Big Jack has different dialog, if only slightly, but I wrote the dialog in the way that's similar to Bolt from his movie. Hence why he said 'my person' rather than 'master' like Big Jack did.
I got to admit though, just midway with writing this, I thought of using this as a way to show domesticated/tame dragons talking to wild ones on Berk during the night but I remembered my plans for the HTTYD/House Of The Dragon storyline and stuck with Bolt as Big Jack.
Now, next is the full movie reaction to Godzilla Minus One
Last chance, who should be the leading cast?
Big Hero Six?
Or
Arcane?
Until then.
Take care of yourselves.
