Chapter One: First Day of Work.

Staring up at the police station, Leona Hart was rather surprised with how different it looked since she had been here as a little girl; she had never imagined that she would actually be stood outside knowing that it was now the place that she called her place of work. Not wanting to linger outside and look like a crazy person in the rain for a moment longer, Leona had her way up the steps and into the building without another moment of hesitant. The reception area did not consist of much and was rather cramped in space with several chairs shoved into it so that people could sit down; she could hear a television playing the news somewhere nearby.

"Hi," Leona greeted looking to the woman that was sat at the reception desk, she walked over to the desk glad to see that someone was here; she still felt nervous enough about coming here today. The woman behind the desk jumped and nearly dropped the glasses that she had been cleaning before sticking them back on; she blinked a couple of times trying to focus on the new-comer. Diana Forbes had lived in Forks her entire life and had spent most of her career working behind this desk; she practically knew everyone in town so the sight of a stranger confused her for a moment.

"Can I help you with something, honey?" Diana asked a polite smile filling her face, she was sure that it was probably a tourist that had gotten lost or had managed to lose a friend while she had been camping in the surrounding area. It was not an unusual thing and most of the time there was not much to be worried about around here; the most they had to deal with was the animal killings that occurred every now and then.

"Leona Hart," Leona said introducing herself, she was sure that they would be expecting her since they had been notified that she would be starting today. Diana furrowed her brow wondering why the name sounded so familiar, she had heard it somewhere that morning and it took her a moment to realise why it sounded so familiar to her before she realised.

Her eyes turned to scan the young woman, she was certainly not what she had expected and she had to admit that she was rather surprised that Charlie had hired someone so young to fill in Wayland's position. It had been awhile since they'd had rookies here in Forks, most preferring the big cities for their training rather than the small town.

"Ah yes. Leona Hart, one of the new recruits," Diana greeted with a warm smile, she was pleased to see the rookie was early for her shift; she was a little impressed knowing that the last rookie to start here had turned up late. Diana was quick to offer Leona a tour of their small precinct, it was not much but it was where they worked and she was sure that they would bump into other members of the team that worked there. The station was rather simple and Leona was relieved to find that everything was in an easy location to find without having to constantly ask where things might be.

"And this is the staff room," Diana announced pushing open the door that lead to the tiny room where most of them had lunch if they didn't find their way down to the Lodge for their meals. There was a microwave in the far corner of the staff room with a kettle and fridge, a couch on the wall next to it and a small table in the centre of the room with four chairs cramped around it; it was simple place with little to offer.

The people inside seemed to stop what they were doing and turned to look at the newcomers, they clearly had not realised that there was a tour going on; they watched Diana curious about what was going on. The only other woman in the room leant back in her chair and raised an eyebrow at Diana, she was sure that she would have been notified about this tour during their meeting that morning.

"Detective Lopez, Deputy Thompson and Deputy Jones… this is Officer Leona Hart one of our new recruits," Diana introducing pointing out each of Leona's new co-workers for her so she knew who was who. There were many that worked in the department and Leona would likely be paired with each of these people in her first six months as an officer.

"It's a pleasure to meet you," Antonio Lopez greeted getting to his feet and moving to shake Leona's hand, it had been a long time coming and it was about time that they had the position filled.

Roll call was next on the agenda, the room filled with the day shift cops with Leona and Jackson West sitting front and centre after their meeting with Charlie that morning. The two of them spoke quietly, taking everything in as they looked around the room at the other police officers that were around; both of them notably the youngest people in the room.

The pair had been friends during the police academy and Jackson had proven eager to follow in his father's footsteps when it came to being a police officer. They didn't have to wait long before Charlie and Joanna entered, the two of them talking seriously about his ex-wife and her demands that he buy their daughter a camera for her eighteenth birth while she bought the cheaper photo album. A source of contention, if there was one thing that Charlie disliked it was dealing with his flaky ex-wife who had been little to no help during their daughter's injury.

"All right, all right. Settle down. Settle down," Charlie called to order as he stepped up to the podium, looking out across the room as Joanna stood to his left knowing that today was a very important day for their department. They hadn't had new recruits since Jones and Thompson joined the force five years ago, the two men becoming loyal and trusted members of the department. Joanna couldn't recall the last time that they'd had a female rookie join their ranks, there were few female officers and she was pleased to see that this year's crop included a woman.

"So, okay, we got some new blood this morning. And some pushing the expiration date," Charlie joked nodding to the new recruits that were seated just in front of him and then to some of the older guys at the back. It had been a while since they'd had rookies in house and he was sure it would take some getting used to, Waylon had left a large space when he had died that Charlie wasn't sure could be filled.

"After six months together in the Academy, you've earned the right to be here. But you'll have to prove yourself to stay. The way we do things matters. Protocol and tradition are the metal from which every cop in this town is forged. Understand?" Charlie said knowing that it wasn't going to be easy, he had thought very carefully about this when accepting the two rookies.

Leona was a local, born and raised here in Forks so she knew what to expect but Jackson was someone that certainly took him by surprise. The eldest son of the Commanding Officer of the Internal Affairs Division was certainly not what Charlie had been expecting, the last thing he needed with everything going on right now was Percy West breathing down his neck.

"Yes sir," Leona and Jackson stated nodding their heads, they were both fresh out of the training academy and were both eager to impress; they knew that there would be a lot at stake during their first six months here. The last thing either of them wanted was to get bounced, they had worked hard to get where they were right this second and they weren't going to let up.

"Hart you'll be riding with Deputy Thompson while West, you'll be riding with Deputy Jones. Today is your first day. Don't let it be your last. Forget the Academy and listen to your T.O.s. They'll teach you the way it should be done. That's it. All right. Be safe out there," Charlie instructed looking between the two rookies. While Forks did tend to be on the quiet side, he remembered his own time as a rookie rather well and he knew that he had pulled some daft stunts trying to impress his T.O when he had been in their position.

Hell, almost everyone here had done the same and he really didn't need a repeat of Thompson's record of ending up in hospital less than six hours into his shift because he'd crashed his patrol car into a tree. At Charlie's dismissal, Leona and Jackson stood from their seats wishing each other good luck before they made their way over to their training officers knowing that there was no time like the present to get started.

"Let's hope this ends well," Joanna muttered to Charlie, she eyed the new rookies and she had a feeling that they were certainly going to keep them on their toes. Charlie sighed, he had his doubts about at least one of them and he hoped that his doubts were wrong; the last thing he needed to be explaining to either of their families was how their kid ended up dead because they'd chosen the wrong career path.
