Leona Hart - Adria Arjona
Chapter Six: October.
Rubbing her hands together trying to stay warm as she walked through the pumpkin patch, Leona eyed the pickings as she pondered her time in Forks so far, the weeks just seemed to fly by, and she couldn't believe that she had been a rookie for nearly two months now. Leona was finding her feet, working with Steve was eye opening and he was a good training officer; he was patient and eager to make sure that Leona got things right.
Today, Leona got to do something that she didn't get to do often which was spend time with her siblings; she had brought Elena and Alex with her for this trip knowing that it was a family tradition. For as long as Leona could remember, the day before Halloween her father had always brought the three of them to the pumpkin patch to pick their pumpkins to carve on Halloween. This year, John had been unable to get away from work in time to take Elena and Alex, so Leona had been more than happy to step in and take them.
"Leona," Alex called from across the patch, turning to face his older sister who quickly turned to see what he was saying only to pump into the person right behind her. Their hands quickly coming to steady her as Leona apologized for bumping into him, her eyes casting up at the towering figure that she had bumped into. He was about a foot taller than her, his dark brown eyes staring deep into her own as she steadied herself; she quickly recognised him as the guy from the night that Isabella Swan had disappeared in the woods.
"Hi," Sam said with a smile on his face, he carefully let go of Leona when he was sure that she was steady; he hadn't meant to stand so close, and he had been trying to work out how to say hello to her. It had been over a month since Sam had imprinted, a month where he had tried to resist and stay away from Leona, sort of keeping an eye on her at a distance when he found it hard to stay away.
"Hi," Leona replied to smiling back at him, she was thankful that he had caught her before she had fallen to the floor; the floor was a little muddy from the rain and she regretted where the pants that she had today to come here.
"Sam. Sam Uley," he said introducing himself, he didn't think that they had crossed paths before and he figured that it would be a good start to whatever this ended up being, he wasn't going to rush into anything so soon after his relationship with Leah had ended.
It might have been a couple of months since the two of them had called it quits but Sam hadn't wanted to rush into things when it was still kinda raw especially when him and Leah had been planning to get married, recently engaged in fact before things had changed. The last thing that Sam wanted was to be seen jumping from relationship to relationship, to be seen as the low life that his father had been seen as.
"Leona Hart," she replied, she tucked her hands into her jacket pockets as she stared up at Sam, a little star struck as she looked at him; she didn't know what it was about him that had her feeling that way. He had been on her mind a lot since they had crossed paths back in September, more than Leona would ever admit aloud to anyone especially her parents who had started to hint that perhaps it was time for her to fly the nest. Her and Jackson were still apartment hunting, there wasn't a lot of places up for rent in Forks, but they were keeping their options open right now.
"It's a pleasure to meet you Leona," Sam said although he already knew her name by now from when he had checked up on her, he had passed by her family home on patrol more times than he could count these days. Paul and Jared liked to joke about it, telling him that he was whipped for wanting to check up on Leona and adding her home to their patrol route.
"Leona," Alex called again in a whiny voice, stamping his foot a little to get his older sister's attention, already annoyed that it had taken her so long to come to him and help him pick his pumpkin. Leona took a step back away from Sam, clearing her throat as she cast a glance towards her brother; almost wishing she could curse him for acting like a little kid right now.
"It was nice to meet you Sam," Leona said taking a step around Sam, she flashed him a smile before she made her way over to Alex, she had a feeling that she would be seeing this Sam Uley again.
"You know we are more than happy for you to stay as long as you need," Penelope said with her back to Leona, focusing on preparing dinner before she headed to the hospital for her night shift that she wasn't looking forward to. Her kids might have been too old for trick or treating but Penelope would not deny that she missed when they had done so; they were all so grown up now, even Alex who had plans to go to a friend tonight to watch a movie.
The house was always so busy around this time of year, her mother had some salsa music playing from her room while John was in the dining room with Elena and Alex carving pumpkins. It was nice having a full house, it was nice having all her family around her; even if money was occasionally a little tight and the house felt a little cramped at times.
"I know," Leona said peeling potatoes behind her mother, she eyed the door knowing that she was on trick or treating duty; her mother did not trust her father to hand out sweets nor did she trust her grandmother to do so. John was far too generous when he handed out the treats, complimenting the kids on their costume and they often run out of sweets when he was on door duty. While Lydia tended to scare the children, she would tell them stories that had caused quite a few parents to complain in the past and Penelope had been so embarrassed.
"I really do love having you home," Penelope said turning to wrap an arm around her eldest daughter, she had been so sad when Leona had been in Seattle for the last three years and she had missed her so much. Penelope was so proud of her daughter, she might not have liked that Leona had become a police officer, but she respected her daughter for falling her dreams and working her ass off to get there.
"Mom," Leona said hugging her back, her mother had been reassuring her that there was no rush for her to move out; that she and John had talked about it and were happy for her to stay as long as she liked. The extra money coming into the house certainly helped with the bills, plus Penelope liked having her three children under one roof.
"I mean it, we'd even find place for your friend Jackson if need be," Penelope offered knowing that poor Jackson was still struggling to get out of the hotel that he was staying in and that his time was running out to find a permanent address. Penelope liked the boy, he was a sweetheart and she knew things weren't the best with his own parents right now; she had opened up the Hart family home to him and encouraged him to join their family dinners.
"Oh he knows," Leona laughed looking back over her shoulder to where Jackson was joining her father and siblings carving pumpkins, she knew how much it meant to him especially given how things were going with his only family. Jackson didn't feel comfortable going home to them, the situation only seeming to grow worse as time went on and his father was trying to pull strings to get him reassigned back to Seattle.
"I am just saying," Penelope laughed before focusing back on the dinner, she didn't want Leona to feel like she had to rush to get out of the house; she knew how hard it was to find a place around Forks. Hell, she and John had lived with her parents for the first few years of Leona's life; they had been saving up for their own place and it had not been easy to do while starting a family. Leona smiled turning to focus back on what she was doing when she saw something in the backyard, she blinked unsure if she was seeing things before she took a step towards the window.
"Did you see that?" Leona asked quickly turning back to her mother, before looking back out the window to see that there was nothing there now; goosebumps ran up her arms as she tried to make sense of what she had seen. Penelope looked at Leona, using the wooden spoon to taste the stew that she was making; her brow furrowed a little confused about what Leona had said.
"See what?" Penelope asked tilting her head and peering out past Leona into the yard, it was dark out and she could barely see anything from where she was stood across the room. Leona opened and closed her mouth, not sure how to describe what she had seen; she was sure her mother would not believe her since it sounded insane even to her right now.
"Never mind," Leona said changing the subject, she doubted anyone would believe that she had seen a large black wolf standing in the backyard staring up at the house; especially not when it was the size of a horse.
