It took a little more than a year, but he couldn't believe it was finally over. The Black Organization went down in a blaze of glory. All the major players were caught, and he was finally able return to his life as Shinichi. There were many sad goodbyes as Conan and the emotional roller coaster ride with Ran as he told her the truth, plus the physical beat-ups he received when he turned back to Shinichi, but that didn't matter as much. The Great Detective Of The East was coming home, as himself, and finally able to experience the last bits of third year high school before graduation hit in the spring.
Yeah, he admits that there was so much schoolwork to catch up on; reading, mathematics, history, and more. But, he didn't care. If anything, he welcomed the challenge with wide open arms and proclaimed that he'd never take learning high school level lessons for granted ever again. His time being subjected to grade school education scarred him more than he realized, which Ran took plenty of opportunities to jokingly tease him about. Thought it annoyed him, he knew he deserved it cause he owed her so much after the truth came out.
When he finally returned to class, everyone was so overjoyed to seem him that they threw him a party after school. His classmates hounded him for info about the case he assisted on, since there was mention of it on the news. Shinichi sadly couldn't divulge any information to them, saying he had to sign papers to keep mum. They poked and prodded but found he wouldn't budge, which surprised the class since he was known to be quite the braggart back then. Some thought to themselves how much that big case greatly humbled him. Though he didn't want to leave them with nothing, so he instead shared other cases he solved during his time as Conan, with minor details changed since he couldn't say he was the little boy. The class marveled at his stories, still impressed by his sharpened skills and abilities. Even with the long amount of time away from school, he still was as sharp as a sword.
As the days went on, Shinichi's presence melded once more into high school life and found a new normal. But that didn't necessarily mean everything went smoothly. His time as Conan caused the development of several strange habits that only made sense while he was one, a child, and two, very short. By becoming seventeen again, the lingering results made itself known throughout the remainder of his school year.
One such instance, due to the former, occurred during an exhibition match he was asked to participate in by the Teitan High School soccer club. The club was a player short for the match against the potential first year recruits and remembered Shinichi's soccer skills. They asked him to temporarily fill the spot and he agreed. All went according to plan, as the first years played against the second and third year members. Shinichi's maneuvers impressed a majority of the students, especially the onlooking girls who came to support their fellow classmates. After the end of the match, everyone mingled and introduced themselves to one another. A girl from another class approached Shinichi, flustered by his presence and introduced herself. In usual Shinichi fashion, he became courteous and polite, but it was the words and his tone of speech escaping his lips that caught everyone's attention.
"It's nice to meet you, Aya-neesan."
Everyone stared at him silently. No one dared offer their questions as Shinichi smiled not realizing what he had said. The girl blushed a deep red as her face melted in an bizarre sense of delight, feeling conflicted about how she was addressed. For Shinichi, he called her by her first name and added the honorific. The soccer club decided to drop the matter, refocusing their attention on getting to know the new members, silently agreeing to one another to not bring up the fact he had slipped up somehow in calling a first year a, "neechan."
His classmates who were there to witness the event asked Ran about this, since she's the closest to the detective. Her answers were general, saying that he probably picked up the habit from their Osakan detective friend, Hattori Heiji, who called pretty much everyone a "neechan," or a "niichan," because it was a common occurrence in the west. She said, he'd probably grow out of it, and the class shrugged it off. But what the others failed to realize was the chain of events that would follow, and how that instance certainly wouldn't be the last. More and more began to fall victim to Shinichi's form of address, mainly the girls.
"Ami-oneesan."
"Nemuri-san."
"Kawai-neechan."
"Emi-nee."
"Susato."
Not a single one had the gall to correct him, and all throughout the school Shinichi's actions spread like wildfire. The girls from his fan club were abuzz with the drama, trying every subtle attempt they could to get him to speak their first name in some cute or adorable way. The boys had beef with their friends, and for some their girlfriends, because they never called them out by their first name as he did. That made them all silently angry at the third year detective, but never directly showed it in his presence.
When Shinichi was finally aware of his actions, thanks to Sonoko being there in person to catch him say it to one of her friends from a different class, he desperately tried to break said habit. The lingering effects of his Conan days were coming back at full force with a deep sense of dread and embarrassment. It was like the school field trip when he tripped up with his, "Ah le le," routine. It was also like the first time he came back to school for the school play and had called Ran, "Ran-neechan." But now, this was so much worse.
He confronted Ran about this later and she admitted she didn't feel the need to correct him, smiling cheekily as she spoke. He figured she was amused by his little childish habits and wanted to see how long it'd last. Hattori slipping and texting the wrong person gave him the answer on her silence. Apparently, the two of them, plus Kazuha, secretly created a bet about when he'd realize it. Ran had won.
But as the saying goes, old habits are hard to break. She may have had her little fun, but up until the day of graduation, Shinichi and Ran had to fend off a bunch more love-struck fans, and their validly angry boyfriends, for simply saying their first names or calling them an, "oneechan."

Alternate Titles: First Name Basis or Old Habits Are Hard To Break
Sub-Ideas: Shinichi developed a habit of being to familiar with everyone.
-Adding "neechan" and "niichan" to names.
-Immediately jumping to first name basis without an honorific.
-Misunderstandings with certain people.
So this silly little idea came from the watching some scenes where Shinichi, as Conan, calls people by their first name, adding an honorific. In several cultures, it's more common to call someone by their first name, but in Japan, it's more formal to address someone by their family name and use the appropriate honorific at the end, unless told otherwise by the person. Children seem have more freedom with it while young.
That made me think, what would happen if Shinichi kept this habit after he came back? How would his class and schoolmates, who aren't as use to it, react? Well this was the idea, and now it's done!
So what did you think? If you'd like, feel free to let me know! Thanks for reading and see you soon on another story idea, or a continuation of one!
