For their date, Trunks took Usagi to a secluded lake that was relatively untouched by the destruction of the Androids. He recalled that sometime before Usagi joining them, he and Gohan would come here to train.
The water was clean and sparkly, it reflected the stars above them. It was like looking out into space.
Trunks held Usagi's hand as they flew over it, skimming the water with his fingers.
"Who knew you had such an eye for beauty, Trunks," Usagi teased him, her lips drawn into a huge smile.
"Well, I think you're beautiful," Trunks countered, causing Usagi's cheeks to burn. "But all in all... Gohan taught me how to appreciate nature. Like... Look at those fish there—" He pointed just beneath the surface of the water. "Their scales reflect light like silver."
Usagi looked at them and low and behold, he was right. Little fishes darted out between marine foliage. Their scales glinted in the moonlight. She remembered how much Gohan loved animals. It was only fitting that she ended up being named after one.
She looked over at Trunks who was grinning down at the fish. It was nice to see how Gohan rubbed off on him. If he was around, he'd be teasing Usagi about her budding relationship with the lavender headed boy.
Trunks noticed that Usagi was staring at him and he shifted his gaze towards her. "Something wrong?"
Usagi shook her head. "Not at all. Just thinking."
Trunks uprighted himself in the air, prompting Usagi to do the same. He held both of her hands now. "About?" He asked.
"You," Usagi answered meekly.
"Oh yeah?" Trunks started to lean in close.
"Yeah." Usagi closed her eyes.
They drew in to each other, lips being met with— wait a minute. Those didn't feel like lips! Usagi's eyes flashed open. She was kissing a cheek! But it wasn't Trunks' cheek.
Trunks was met with the same on his side. A little pink haired girl had wedged herself between the young couple. She was floating. "Well isn't this cute," the girl quipped. She came out from between them and held onto Usagi's face. "Where's your silver hair, mommy?"
"Mommy?" Trunks looked at Usagi with wide eyes.
Usagi held up her hands in self defense. "Whoa, whoa! I've never seen this girl before in my life!"
The pink hair girl then latched onto Trunks. "Hello, daddy."
Trunks' heart fell into the pit of his stomach. "Did you just call me daddy?"
"She must have us confused for her actual parents," Usagi reasoned.
The girl let go of Trunks, now stroking her chin in thought. "I was warned that you weren't that smart, mommy. But that's okay."
"Hey! Who're you calling—"
The girl cut off Usagi and held out a capsule in the palm of her hand. Trunks recognized the type anywhere, the same kind of capsules his mom made. "Where'd you get that from?" Trunks asked.
"Gramma Bulma," the girl replied.
She knew his mom's name. Something was up. "Does this mean... That mom's time machine actually worked?" Trunks deduced. "You come from the future?"
The girl nodded. "Mhm!"
"That means, Trunks and I...?" Usagi's face was glowing red.
The girl nodded again. "Mhm!"
Usagi nearly fainted.
"My name is Usagi too!" The girl exclaimed with a twirl. "'cept everyone just calls me Chibiusa."
Trunks cocked his head. "Everyone?" He was curious as to who was still alive in the future. If they managed to save everyone.
"Ope!" Chibiusa clamped her hands over her mouth. "I can't say too much. But I can tell you this—" She now held out a hand written letter. The penmanship was rather sloppy. "The mommy and daddy where I come from send me back in time to train in being a Sailor Scout."
Trunks squinted at the letter. "Wait a minute... Usako, you wrote this!" He'd hate to say it out loud but after all those years, Usagi's handwriting has not improved. But at least they knew it was genuine.
"You don't say!" Usagi grabbed the letter. "We really get married?" She looked at where she signed her name.
Usagi Briefs.
"Wait..." Trunks paused, a lightbulb went off in his head. "Mom's time machine works... That means I can go to the past. That means I can try and stop all this destruction!"
Chibiusa stayed silent, keeping her word on not revealing too much. She maintained a neutral expression.
Trunks tugged on Usagi's arm. "C'mon Usako, we gotta go! Chibiusa you come too!"
.。*。.
Bulma wiped the sweat off of her brow. "I think we did it Ami," she announced, "we finished the time machine." She stepped back to admire the work she and her daughter had put together. It took a long time but it had finally come to fruition.
Ami folded her arms in front of her. "But how will we know that it works?" She was worried that if they tried sending Trunks into the past now without any test trials, they may lose Trunks forever. The machine might leave him in some unknown time or worse, fry him.
Bulma opened her mouth to reply but the sound of the lab doors opening cut her off. Trunks, Usagi, and some little girl barged inside. Their chests were heaving with excitement.
"Mom!"
"Oh hey, you two. You have impeccable timing you know." Bulma looked on at them in amusement. "Who's um... Who's the kid?" She bent down with her hands on her knees so that she could be level with the girl. Why, if she didn't know any better, the girl looked very familiar. Her facial features were reminiscent of Chi Chi's.
More so, she looked like Usagi.
Bulma had been around the Son family to witness Chi Chi and Usagi as children so she was quite certain of the resemblance.
"Mom," Trunks began. "This is Chibiusa. Our daughter from the future."
"Daughter?" Bulma echoed, taken aback. "Future?"
Next to her, Ami's face went red. "Brother... You and Usagi? You..." She noticed how the two were holding hands.
Bulma broke out into a smile. "Well! Congratulations you two! Usagi, allow me to be the first to welcome you into the Briefs family!"
Usagi stuttered. "I-I don't know w-what to say."
"Nothing," Trunks stepped in front of Usagi. "Don't say anything. Mom," he glanced down at Chibiusa beside him. The girl hugged his leg. "Since our future daughter is here, that means that the time machine works. Correct?"
Bulma swiveled on her heel, facing the machine. "We finished it but we didn't quite get to test it out. Hey, Chibiusa, come here a second." The woman beckoned for the little girl.
Chibiusa looked up at Trunks, as if asking for permission. He bristled. It's not like he was her dad yet. He was too young to have this kind of responsibility flung onto him. Did his future self think this was funny? Surely one day he'd look back on this and laugh. "She's your grandmother so... Go ahead." He shrugged.
Chibiusa stepped up to Bulma who angled her head towards her ear. The two whispered back and forth for a few seconds before Bulma stood up straight with her hands on her hips. "The time machine works."
Usagi raised a brow. "She told you that?" Her question would continue to go on ignored.
Bulma now turned towards her son. "Are you ready, Trunks? We're gonna send you back to some point after Usagi's father defeated Frieza."
The blood in his veins ran cold. This was it. He really was going back. "Just... Let me go find Rei so I can give her a proper goodbye since she's not here right now."
Bulma nodded in understanding. "All good here. We'll prepare everything on our end."
Trunks let go of Usagi's hand. She was inclined to follow him but he held up a hand that told her to stay behind. He wanted to talk to Rei alone.
