Chapter 1: Found family
July 21st; 1898
Screaming. That's all any in the building could hear at the moment. Giant metal cages, filled with people from Ishval, were lined up along the wall while in the middle of the room several of them were tied up, begging to be released.
Several men surrounded the captured people. The wore blue buttoned up trench coats, blue pants, black boots, and white gloves. They were state alchemists from Amestris, they're using these people in an experiment to create a philosopher's stone, but in order to create the stone they needed to sacrifice several human lives, which is why they had all these people here.
The alchemist's placed their hands on the ground and activate the transmutation circle, the people in the center of the circle let out blood curdling screams as they were melted, bones included and reformed into a small blood red stone.
"Bring in the next batch." One of the supervisors ordered. A few guards opened the last cage and pulled out the rest of the Ishvalan's, including a woman who was carrying a baby and a man with tattoo sleeves on both of his arms.
The people were placed in the center of the transmutation circle and held at gun point instead of tied up.
The woman was quietly sobbing while clutching her baby. The tattooed man glanced at her then at his hands. "Forgive me, Ishvala." He mumbled.
Once again, the Alchemist's activated the circle, but this time, the tattooed man put his hands on the ground and also started using alchemy, shocked both the Alchemist's and the Ishvalan's sacrifices as their religion sees alchemy as a great taboo.
The reaction was nothing less the chaotic. Somehow, the transmutation circle grew to the size of the entire room, a giant eye appeared in the center of the circle with several small black arms came out of the circle and began to break down everyone in the room.
The room then exploded in a bright flash of white. The babies crying echoed through the white space as a figure sat across from the crying infant. The figure looked exactly like the infant, minus the fact that it sat up, crossed legged, and was white like the space around them, only able to be seen by its shadowy outline.
"Hmmm. Congratulations, since you technically didn't do this, you'll be the first and probably the only person I'll take pity on." The figure said in a voice that sounded like a baby mixed with every other voice ever heard.
A massive gate behind the infant opened up, the shadowy hands gently picked up the infant and pulled him in as it slowly closed.
"I know you can't understand me as you are now, but I hope you enjoy the gift that I'm giving you." The figure said right as the gate closed.
Dublith.
It has been a few months since Izumi Curtis had tried to use human transmutation to bring her child back and failed, losing some of her organs.
She was currently walking through the town to clear her head when she heard a noise. She looked around and heard the noise coming from an ally. With caution, she approached the ally, she peaked from behind the wall and was shocked. There was a baby, just sitting on a cloth on the ground crying his eyes out. With her guard still up, Izumi went up to the baby and gently picked him up, cradling him and holding him close to keep him warm.
"Shhhh, it's okay, you're okay, I've got you, you're safe now." Izumi said, trying to calm the baby done. It worked as the baby soon stopped crying and looked up at Izumi with his redish-purple eyes.
The baby cooed and reached out to touch Izumi's face. Izumi was stiff, thinking about the child she had lost just to experience something like this months later. A tear formed in the corner of her eye. The baby must have sensed her sorrow because he once again started to cry. This quickly shocked Izumi out of her trance. She stood up, whiped her tears, and made a decision.
A bell chimed as the door to a butcher shop opened. "Welcome, today's special i-" Sig, Izumi's husband, greeted only to cut himself off when he saw his beloved wife walk in carrying a small bundle. He quickly got from behind the counter and was at her side when she coughed up a glob of blood. "I'm alright." Izumi said as Sig wiped her mouth with a cloth.
The baby in Izumi's arms reached out and started pulling on Sig's beard, drawing the man's attention.
Sig looked at the baby, then at his wife who looked sorrowful. "Izumi?" Sig said in a concerned tone.
Later, after explaining what happened and a long discussion on what they should do, the couple agreed to adopt the baby. The pair looked down at the sleeping form of their new son with content smiles.
"So what should we name him?" Sig asked. Izumi hummed and took a thinking pose. How about… Josiah?" She suggested. Sig grinned. "Sounds perfect." The new parents looked down at their newly adopted and now named son with joyful smiles. "Welcome home, Josiah Curtis." Izumi said, rubbing Josiah's cheek with her finger, getting a smile from the sleeping infant.
Time skip. May 4th; 1906
Izumi and Josiah were sparring in the backyard. Izumi threw a roundhouse at her son's ribs, but he ducked under it with split. Josiah then fell back, and tried to sweep his mom's, it worked but his mom clapped her hands in mid-air then touched the ground making it move and form around Josiah's legs, holding him in place.
"No fair mom, you said no alchemy." Josiah complained. "I told you, anything goes in a fight." Izumi said, dusting herself off. "Why do old people have to cheat." Josiah mumbled.
In an instant, Izumi got in his face with a glare, a tick mark on her for head, and a menacing black aura enveloping her. Joshua gulped in fear.
"My dear little boy, do you wanna repeat yourself for momther one more time?" Izumi said, cracking her knuckles. Josiah shook his head rapidly. "I... I-I-I, I said I love you mom." He said with a fearful smile and sweat pouring down his face.
"Oh good, that's what I thought you said." The dark aura dissipated from Izumi and she patted Her son on the head.
"Hey you two, dinner's ready, come inside." Sig said from the doorway. "Alright then, I guess will pick this up tomorrow then." Izumi said. She handed Josiah a stick of chalk a d walked away.
"Hey!" Josiah shouted. Izumi looked back and smirked. "If you don't use alchemy and get out in time the all the food will be gone before I let you out my self, good luck." She waved before walking into the house.
Josiah struggled to get out of his bindings before he broke the chalk in his hand out of frustration. "Dang it." He shouted, throwing the pieces to the ground. "Ugh, how does mom do it." Josiah asked himself remembering everytime his mother used Alchemy. Everytime, she did the same thing before hand.
Josiah looked at his hands for a moment. "Welp, I won't know unless I try."
Josiah clapped his hands together and placed them on the stone. Slowly, the bindings retreated back into the ground leaving Josiah standing there looking at his hands. "Whoa." Josiah said to himself. He then remembered what his mother said and ran inside.
After dinner, Josiah found his mother sitting outside, star gazing. He sat down next to her and joined her.
"Hey mom." "Yeah kiddo." "Where did you learn to do alchemy like you did earlier?" Izumi's looks softened and she looked away. "Why do you want to know?" she asked. Josiah then stood up, clapped his hands together, and touched the ground. The ground then shifted and formed a small stone bird. Josiah looked back to his mother only to see her horrified.
Izumi wanted to cry in that moment, she knows that in order to perform alchemy without a transmutation circle one has to been sent through the gate of truth, and in order to do that you would have had to attempted human transmutation.
"Mom, what's wr-" Josiah was cut off when his mother grabbed him in a bone crushing hug. It wasn't unusual for Izumi to show affection for those she cares for, but not out of the blue like this.
"I'm so sorry." Izumi said, letting a few tears fall and confusing her son even further.
She knows that Josiah didn't attempt human transmutation, she had only recently started teaching him about alchemy, therefore the only explanation would be that human transmutation was performed on him before she found him.
"Mom, did I do something wrong?" "Josiah asked. "No, no, it's just… nevermind, I'll tell you later." Izumi said, wiping her tears before letting her son go and looking at him face to face.
"Josiah, listen to me closely." Izumi said, getting a nod from her son. "First, no matter what anyone says to or about you, you need to remember that you are just fine as you are. Okay?" "Okay." Second, from now on your trainings going to be tougher then ever, if you don't think you can handle it then we won't do, but that means no more training ever again. What do you want to do?"
Josiah looked down, thinking it over. After about a minute he looked back at his mother with a gentle smile.
"I can handle it mom, I'm just as strong as you are." Josiah said, flexing his little arms. Izumi sighed and shook her head. "Come on, it's pass your bedtime and we've got a long day tomorrow." Izumi said as she stood up and took her son's hand. "Okay mom." Josiah said with a bright smile.
The mother and son walked back inside, thinking that they were ready to tackle the challenges of the next day, not knowing that some of those challenges aware harder then others.
