The wind blew softly outside with the sound of her son sleeping upstairs. Elizabeth had taken a cup of tea and sat on the settee with a book. She had read the last page over and over so it was clear that it wasn't working to calm or distract her. She grumbled in frustration, throwing the book down on the table in front of her. The cup topped and slowly spilled the tea onto the table. Elizabeth sighed picking up her book so it wouldn't get ruined.
She walked into the kitchen with her book to wipe it off. She thought about seeing Nathan in his white tux jacket this afternoon. She had always thought he was a very attractive man but there was something different about seeing him dressed that way. She didn't even have time to talk to him or have a minute alone because Bill called him away into the car. He had a moment to explain that he was going undercover on a mission. He assured her that it wasn't dangerous and he would come to see her later.
Elizabeth was distracted all day. She wasn't sure what occupied her thoughts more. Her handsome man out on the town or her Mountie undercover on a case. She set the book down on the table and took a towel back to the table to wipe up the tea she had spilled. Once she walked over she heard a soft tap tap tap on the door. She would know that sound anywhere. She smiled and walked quickly over to the door. And there he was.
Nathan stood on the porch of Elizabeth's row house exactly how Elizabeth saw him earlier. Dressed in a white suit jacket and bow tie. Nathan had seen the look in Elizabeth's eyes when she saw him earlier so as much as he wanted to take off the bow tie, he wanted to see Elizabeth more. She stood there and her eyes went wide. She wasn't able to form the words as she looked at him. Nathan looked past her and saw the spilled tea on her table and got a little worried.
"Elizabeth? Is everything ok?"
That brought Elizabeth back, "Oh, yes Nathan. Everything is great." She moved back so Nathan could walk into her row house and he shut the door behind him. She walked up to him and she reached out and put her hands on the lapel of his suit jacket. "You seem ok, the case went well?"
"Yes and no. I was able to go undercover and meet with the man I was supposed to and find out some information. Unfortunately we just have more questions."
Elizabeth nodded. Nathan noticed that she was a little distracted with her eyes on his jacket and bow tie. He tried to make a joke, "Plus you know how much I hate wearing ties." Nathan gave her a crooked smile as he tilted his head trying to get her to look him in the eyes.
Elizabeth looked up and smiled back at him. She got an idea. A truly wonderful idea. Elizabeth walked closer and reached up to place her hands on Nathan's shoulders. Nathan put his hands on her waist and started to pull her closer to lean in for a kiss. Elizabeth pushed him back slightly with a smirk and Nathan was confused.
She reached her hands towards the bow tie and slowly untied it. Elizabeth kept her eyes locked on his. The emotion between the two of them was deep and intense. Elizabeth let the tie hang from Nathan's neck and she moved to unbutton the first button of Nathan's dress shirt. Nathan released the breath he was holding as Elizabeth's fingers brushed against his throat. She released the first button and moved to the second. After the second button was unbuttoned, she moved her hands back over his chest.
"I'm glad you are ok Nathan. And that you came home to me."
Home. That's where Nathan was whenever he was with Elizabeth. He knew that now more than ever.
"I love you Elizabeth. I will do everything I can to come home to you and our children. We have a long life ahead of us. And I have lots of plans for us."
"Oh do you now?" Elizabeth said as she wrapped her hands around Nathan's neck pulling him close. "I love you too."
Elizabeth put her hand behind his neck and pulled his head towards her. Their lips met in an explosion of passion. A promise of what was to come and the future that both of them dreamed of.
