Chapter 25
Spider-Man grimaced as he swung to the bridge, unable to believe the unfortunate timing of this incident. As if things weren't bad enough following the City Hall Attack and the deaths of so many, Laurel's dad being one of them and Laurel clearly was not taking it well. He had no idea where Jennifer was right now, but hoped Sam could find her and together they could help Laurel. After all, despite Sam's words, he couldn't help but feel guilty, wishing he could have done more despite the circumstances. But that wasn't the only loss that hit hard, namely a friend that was sadly lost, Natalie. Which was why, when he arrived, Spider-Man was shocked to see Captain Anderson at the bridge, maintaining a perimeter around the bridge.
"Captain, what's going on...Didn't expect to see you here?" Spidey queried as he landed.
Captain Anderson turned and narrowed his eyes. "Could have asked you the same...but I guess it doesn't matter...I know you can't be everywhere. Vulture is causing a problem here as you no doubt heard. I have to run this operation."
Spider-Man sighed. "I'm sorry about Natalie, I wish I could have saved her."
"Her and everyone else who died, I already know the sort of guy you are." Captain Anderson replied, a slight tremor in his voice. "As for why I'm here specifically, working helps."
Spider-Man nodded, understanding.
Composing himself, Captain Anderson spoke again.
"Okay, here's the situation." He said. "Vulture has taken over the bridge, we were able to evacuate many of those on it, but there are two buses full of school kids still stuck on there. Vulture's set up explosives along the bridge and is threatening to blow it up if we try to move on or save the kids...he's demanding you show up and fight him."
Spider-Man growled. "Okay, even for Vulture that's low. Alright, do you know where the bombs are?"
"Before we were forced to stay away by his threats to blow the bridge up...we did manage to get footage with drones." Captain Anderson explained. "Here, check it out. We've verified there are six of them, we found all six, we just can't get to them."
Spider-Man checked the footage out, making a copy for his own use through his lenses. He noted that two of the bombs were in fact stationed in places only he could reach, the other four set up in more normal locations.
"Okay...I think our best bet, if we want to deal with these bombs is I sneak in and disarm them, if you guys can distract him. I'll let you know when the bombs are clear." Spider-Man said at last.
"Are you sure?"
Spider-Man nodded. "I know Vulture's tech well enough."
So it was decided and soon the plan was in motion, the police trying to negotiate with Vulture as he hovered over the two buses, stationed right in the middle of the bridge. Spider-Man meanwhile swung into action, ready to turn invisible at a moments notice.
It was slow and steady going, nerve racking and dangerous, Vulture was still alert for anything out of the ordinary while negotiating with the cops, not straying far from the buses, the kids were still in danger. Luckily Spidey, using his invisibility, was able to reach and disarm the four bombs on the upper side of the bridge. Now he was underneath the bridge, not needing his invisibility and had just disarmed the fifth bomb.
'Okay, one more, get this done then I can confront Vulture.' Spidey thought to himself. 'I'm not gonna let any more people down, I can't let him hurt those kids, not after City Hall.'
He reached the bomb and quickly got to work, it was soon disarmed, the bombs were no longer a threat and, just like with the seventh, he moved it up to a position that it could be properly and safely removed later. He swung up fully onto the bridge and landed, looking up at Vulture and glaring.
"Okay, big bird, I'm here." He remarked.
Vulture turned, smugly. "Took you long enough Spider-Man, I thought you'd leave these children to their fate, like you did those people at City Hall. Too bad, now you die."
Spidey glared but didn't move as Vulture moved upwards, now out of range of the impending explosion as he activated the detonator. Nothing happened.
"What?!"
"Did you honestly think I wouldn't take care of the bombs before coming to fight you, they've all been disarmed, so you lost your advantage, Adrian." Spider-Man explained calmly.
He was not going to let Vulture's taunts get to him.
With a furious growl, Vulture threw his detonator aside and dived towards Spidey, attempting to use his razor sharp wings but Spidey dodged and spun around.
"Nice try Adrian, you missed!" Spidey taunted.
Vulture spun in mid-air and used his wings again, this time firing several razor feathers off like missiles. Spidey dodged again, trusting his spider-sense to guide him safely around them.
"Missed again."
"Oh really." Vulture said smugly.
That was when Spidey saw the danger and growled. The feathers veered around and began to sever the connections on the bridge, Vulture was still trying to bring it down.
"Oh no, no, no, no, not happening."
Spidey swiftly got to work, dodging and even hitting Vulture with impact webs while swinging around the bridge and pulling the damaged connections back together and thickly webbing the up, enough to keep them secure until proper repairs could be done.
"Ha, how pathetic-!"
"You're the pathetic one Adrian, now you're gonna pay." Spider-Man snarled.
He took no chances and launched himself at Vulture, catching him off guard and he quickly got to work, being an old man, Vulture was not as durable as Spidey's other opponents, so he didn't need to use his Venom Power or hit as hard or as often, it was thankfully easy to subdue and web up Vulture, the tricky part the whole time had been getting to him.
"Okay Captain." Spidey said at last. "He's secure, the bombs are dealt with, still quite a bit to tidy up but the kids are safe, you can take him in now."
"We're on our way."
Spidey smiled and ended the call, relieved, then heard the cheers and applause from the kids on the buses.
XXXXX
Spider-Man let out a sigh of relief as he perched on the nearby roof, watching as the buses full of school kids finally drove off the bridge and headed to take them to safety, the police had already secured vulture and were now transporting him to be imprisoned like the other Assassins. He was glad that things had been resolved without any losses this time, what was more he knew things weren't so heavily against him now, Kraven was the only assassin left now and he had used the data in the USB stick to send what was needed, some anonymous hints, it wouldn't be long before the police had all the information they needed, they could hopefully finally see the downfall of Kingpin too. That was when his phone went off, surprising him. It was Jennifer, or specifically, Black Cat. He knew this because she called him but hung up after two rings before calling back, a code to let him know which persona was calling him.
"Cat, what's going on?" He asked, answering.
Her voice was tight, as if she was anxious. "I need you to meet with me, Upper East Side, the spot...the spot we first met. We need to talk, something's happened."
She hung up before Spidey could ask any further questions, now he was anxious all over again, wondering what had just happened. Shaking his head he swung off, heading for his destination, wondering just what he was going to encounter.
End of chapter, hope you enjoyed it, read and review please.
